The Holiday Collection 2022

HOLIDAY

I spend the entire year working up to this large body of work. As I paint, I set aside special pieces that I know will be the perfect exclamation point to a fulfilling and productive year. This collection attempts to capture not only what inspired me in 2022, but the overarching feel of my art practice as a whole. I revisit previous collections and lean into new ideas; appreciating the past and looking forward to fresh thoughts and perspectives.

In this years Holiday Collection, I strive to convey the grounded, subtle beauty that is found in nature. Curling flower petals, meandering viens in leaves, a pink tinged sky and muddled reflections in water all call out to me, begging to be seen and appreciated.

the DOGWOOD collection

The rich symbolism and meaning behind these flowering trees cannot go unnoticed. Rebirth,resurrection, strength, resilience and purity are all attached to the blooming dogwood. I found myself leaning into the directional force that the sun has on these delicate leaves and petals. Each limb arches in dramatic fashion, delicately bending and twisting to be touched by the light. These mixed media, original works are painted on handmade, hand dyed, 100% cotton paper with a natural deckled edge.

MILK & HONEY collection

This collection uses a limited color palette and focuses on dreamy landscapes and treetops that are full of light and billowing clouds. The works themselves are petite and cause the viewer to lean in to take in the details.

SEASONAL STUDIES collection

This collection experiements with color and brush strokes with the same compostion to evoke different feelings in each original work. These pieces were such a joy to paint, allowing my hands and mind to focus solely on color was freeing.

LAND.SKY.HEAVEN & ALIGN collections

Using my signature color palette, these Land.Sky.Heaven pieces are a modern, simplified approach to the typical landscape. Heavily inspired by the great modern artist, Mark Rothko, I experiment with texture and the abstract concept of a layered, milky heaven — full of depth and light. Each work is painted on handmade, hand dyed 100% cotton paper with a natural deckled edge.

ALIGN takes the Land.Sky.Heaven collection one step further; visually reflecting the idea of focus and aligning one’s self with the truth. The ALIGN collection is comprised of offbeat, vibrant color palettes. Layers of thin and thick washes of color and mediums give each work a meandering history that each end in a focused, purposeful finish. The marriage of tactile surfaces juxtaposed against the exact nature of an underlying grid and circle create a loosely held tension; pointing to the concept of blocking out the noise of life to focus on what is true and real for each of us.

Laurel-Dawn graduated from Auburn University in graphic design, with a strong focus in fine art. She has been working in the design field for over 10 years and painting in the margins of her chaotic and beautiful life as a wife and mother. In 2020, Laurel-Dawn took the leap into being a fine artist, full time.

Laurel-Dawn has always drawn inspiration from the lines made from her Creator; the natural lines of a rigid mountainside, or the dramatic curves seen in leaves and flower petals. She strives to glorify beauty that already exists from her small corner of the world; embracing the delicate, yet messy process of being an artist.

Laurel-Dawn currently resides in Homewood, Alabama with her husband, Mike, little boy, Lochlan and baby boy, Shepherd.
