PHOENIX PARK

masterplan

the phoenix park redesign project began as a way to infuse the downtown lexington area with formal, useable green space. as the park was intended for high volumes of users to sustain the expanding urban network, it became important to create a space that was dynamic and intriguing with a distinct identity.

PLANTATION plantation is a small town located near louisville, ky, and is an area greatly affected by the growing sprawl of the city. in order to compete with surrounding communities to gain both commerce and residents, the area consisting of an existing commercial area, church, athletic field, and large area of undeveloped land was selected for redesign. the intent of this design focused on three main goals: connectivity within the site and to the adjacent residential area, providing civic amenity so that plantation becomes a destination point and community center in the greater landscape, and creating a walkable environment to inspire and promote activity.

1000 FT続 DWELLING

the need for a shift in consumption is growing ever more clear with the revelation of environmental depletion discussed today. this design for a 1000 cubic foot dwelling illustrates how one can live comfortably and efficiently while effectively reducing consumption related to development. central to this design is the concept of minimalism to create a non足intrusive, functional space within the landscape.

perspective from street to proposed dwelling

cross section of dwelling this concept is manifested within the site and neighborhood as a compact dwelling of simple geometric form. using both modern technologies and natural materials, this design is based on a rational plan of multifunctional components. the design creates a clear connection between interior and exterior spaces 足 simulating openness in even the smallest of spaces.

Auto Places to People Spaces

working as a class, this project proposes a design fix that addresses the growing issues associated with the automobile within metropolitan areas. the concept is based on the natural system of a beehive, with the idea of limiting access (in this case, automobiles) at the core. the proposed change will increase alternative transportation, greenways, and public spaces while also serving as a catalyst to improving environmental health and quality of life in urban area.

the design of this residential terrace located within the natural landscape of the kentucky river valley combines the rustic nature of the area with contemporary design through layout and materials. a variety of spaces ranging from formal, entertainment areas to informal, intimate niches were created by a series of walls, steps, and layers of plant material to provide a diverse experience.

RE+CREATE COMM+UNITY PARK

participating in a design competition sponsored by atlanta, georgiabased park pride in conjunction with its 9th annual parks and greenspace conference, the objective for this project was to create “the

neighborhood park for our time.”

given a 13.3 acre site, with approximately six acres of developable space, this park was designed to be a physical expression of the local demographics while promoting passive recreation, education, and community involvement. central to this design is the concept of water water as a physical element as well as a symbolic idea. from this, five themes, or symbols represented in this design are fertility, purification, healing, youth, and life.

NO足LAND URBAN AGRICULTURE a retrofit model

this project proposed an innovative design strategy to promote urban agriculture, as it has become an imminent issue both of the present and future. with the rising population and densification of urban area and the need to bring fresh food to urban dwellers at a lower economic and environmental cost, the river and its historically appreciated assets need to be revisited. the proposed solution is to retrofit existing infrastructure, in this case both barges and harbors, to grow food and compost urban waste. this no足land, sustainable strategy will promote community involvment and education by using the barge as an interactive lens. the agricultural model is intended to reconnect people with the natural landscape, to remind them of the lost beauties of nature which for so long has been hidden behind pollution and growing densities. the barge will be an icon of remediation and life within the urban landscape, meant to impact people in more substantial ways than just providing fresh produce.

NOLAND URBAN AGRICULTURE

a retrofit model

Grow Food on Barges: + doesn’t use up valuable urban land that is crucial for sustaining future growth + urban agriculture becomes mobile: food can be brought to the people at a much cheaper cost than other forms of transportation + takes advantage of existing infrastructure: retrofitting is one of the most sustainable practices used throughout history Environmental Restoration and Reconnection: + reconnects city dwellers with waterways, a reminder of the importance of this element to all of life + uses sustainable technologies to reduce carbon emissions and the consumption of energy and resources

CONCEPT

City Ports and Harbors become Checkpoints: + barge will stop at each of these locations for harvesting of crops or collection of cities’s waste + public market becomes the central focus of the port; waste collection facilities are also located on site + checkpoints become community centers icons that reconnect the local and regional landscape

INTERMODAL TRANSIT CENTER

the central goal for this project was to provide connectivity to the city of louisville while also creating a distinct space for cyclists to gather in the downtown area.

important to the design was the integration of sustainability and innovation to produce a space that is adaptive, modular, and interactive. the idea of creating a timeless space was the driving motive behind this intermodal transit hub design. The basic concept for the design was derived from the anatomy of the bicycle. breaking it down into three basic functions of motion, safety, and structure, where each part is vital to both the bike and the user in a manner that is inextricably linked and necessary.

REVIVAL ON MERCHANTS ROW: heritage preservation + design as a strategy for sustainable rural community development in perryville, ky

a collaborative initiative involving diverse constituents, both students and community members, focused on area revitalization and sustainability in perryville’s historic merchants row.

design workshops and committee meetings were conducted to capture community needs and desires. preservation, layered with contemporary visions, led to a proposal integrating the historic heart of the community with necessary sustainable economic progression. this project was submitted to the community board for grant application. additionaly, it was submitted to the american society of landscape architects for award consideration.
