Project Details Team Project Objective: Design and brand a boutique hotel that features guest amenities and residences. Square Footage: 35,000 SQ FT Location: Baltimore, Maryland Concept: Locomotive trains and steam engines were once the most prominent form of passenger and product transportation in the United States. Now, they exist as a spectacle or chosen way to travel for a scenic experience. In major cities, subways carry on the legacies that their ancestor trains once started. Hotel Zeal will represent the entirety of a train journey: from the station all the way to the destination.
7
Past to Present
Bold
Traditional train station architecture is combined with the mid-century modern style to create a refreshed, timeless look and memorable boldness.
Materials found in traditional trains and stations have been implemented into the design of the hotel.
Entertaining
Hotel Zeal was designed with the goal of providing guests with an experience they woud not forget. The hotel is not just a place to rest, but a place to enjoy and explore.
Inclusive
All amenities have been carefully designed to accomodate guests of all disabilities. Rooms have been divided into types that will be able to meet the needs of any size party.

PRIMARY CARE CLINIC
Project Details Team Project Objective: Design a full renovation for a primary care clinic based on Biophillic and LEAN principles that will cater to all ages. Square Footage: 6,300 SQ. FT. Location: Chicago, Illinois Concept: The book of Genesis tells the story of the creation of Earth and conceptually portrays the idea of new beginnings, natural elements, and biophilic design. Today, as designers strive to design for the ‘next generation’, spaces require innovative technology and design solutions that create a healthier space and aid in connecting occupants more closely to nature. The space of Genesis Primary Care Center illustrates these key elements through the use of natural light and natural resources.
21
Natural and Durable
organic
Biophillic design is implemented into the space by using materials such as wood, greenery, natural light, and organic colors.
Taking it back to the basics, the materials selected for this project are simplistic, refreshing, and made to last.
innovation
New technology has been integrated into the design to improve the workplace and set a new standard for healthcare design.
productivity
Following LEAN-Led process, the design was strategically space planned to make the workflow seamless and without interruption.
space plan
The walls of the exam corridor were planned in a flowing formation similar to the graining of wood. Components such as the consult rooms, atriums, and nurses station represent the knots seen in wood grain.

Mother’s Room: Due to the primary care clinic serving patients of all ages and needs, special considerations were made to ensure that everyone is comfortable while they are waiting or being treated. One example would be the mother’s room that was incorporated into the design. This room allows nursing mothers to care for their child in a private and comfortable space that features a rocking chair, table and space for a stroller.

Ceiling Beams: Architectural beams were added in the treatment corridor and is framed in by integrated lights that follow the treatment room walls. The contrasting color draws the eyes up towards the ceiling and then the horizontal lines move your eyes out towards the curved walls.

The waiting room was designed to be a functional space that patients are able to be productive in while waiting to be seen. Tables and booths offer space for people to use electronics. A lounge area is positioned in the corner overlooking the views of the city. Lastly, traditional seating was incorporated for those who like a more structured arrangement. Overall, the space provides numerous seating postures that meet the needs of a variety of visitors.
Ceiling: The two-tier dropped ceiling follows a simplistic outline of the walls it is enclosed by. Recessed can-lights are used throughout the space with pendants highlight seating groups.
Waiting Room
28
Check-In Kiosk Rendering: Check-in and check-out kiosks were included into the design to provide patients with a fast, more secure and socially-distanced option. The curved walls and floor lights invite patients in and moves them toward the waiting room.
29
Reception Desk Rendering: The customed reception desk features a curved top that dips down to meet ADA requirements. The shape of the desk is reflected in the ceiling detail. The dropped ceiling makes the area feel more private and separate from the waiting room.
30
Consult Room Rendering: Consult rooms are positioned parallel to the reception desk for easy access to the entrance and treatment rooms. For more serious discussion, the privacy curtain may be pulled to cover the window wall.
31
Treatment Room Rendering: Exam rooms are fitted with multi-function exam chairs that take up less space in the room. Medical equipment is mounted on the wall to save space or are mobile so that the physicians can move the equipment where they need it within the room. Natural light, greenery and calming colors help to ease the nerves of patients.
32
Integrated lighting as a way of wayfinding was used throughout all parts of the building. Lines of light trace the curvature and corners of walls and structures. The light strips were also used to innovatively number rooms, kiosks, and the reception desk.
Treatmant Rooms: Two types of treatment rooms were designed for the primary clinic due to the wide variety of injuries and illnesses being treated. Minor treatment rooms are smaller, feature a privacy curtain and are used to treat minor cases such as headaches, ear infections, and coughs. Major treatment rooms are full size exam rooms geared towards treating more severe or private cases such as broken limbs, wounds, or physicals.
Atriums positioned around the nurses station help divide the space and add to the biophilic design. The plants are enclosed in glass to protect patients from air-borne pathogens that plants release.

Project Details Individual Project Objective: Design a socially sustainable veterans center that will serve as a transition home and community center for veterans. Square Footage: 20,966 SQ FT Location: Phoenix, Arizona (over half million veterans in the state) Concept: There is nothing better than getting a handwritten letter in the mail, and this is something many veterans can agree on. The letters they received during their service was a source of hope and comfort of better times to come. Letters for veterans today are reminders that the transition back to the civilian world is tough, but they are not alone. Letters saved from the past are reminders in the future of how far they have come. A comfort then, a comfort now, a comfort later.
37
socially sustainable
In order to provide residents with a socially sustainable environment, the design includes features that meet all the basic needs of a social sustainable space as outlined in research: amenities and infrastructure, space to grow, voice and influence, and social and culture.
Cozy and Cool Materials selected contrast with the surrounding environment.
honorable
Providing places for veterans to reflect on lost friends, memories, and to be honored was very important for the center. The design carefully showcases patriotic and service logos and memorabilia so to not overwhelm those who are trying to recover from traumatic experiences.
encouraging
The center is designed to encourage residents to socially engage with others, challenge themselves academically and progress towards re-entering society through strategic placement of public and private spaces.

Why it matters: The 65+ age group makes up the largest part of the veteran population in Arizona. Because of this, the design needed to be able to accommodate the physical needs of the age group. The design must also include features that can be enjoyed by veterans of all ages. Lounge and dining chairs all feature arms to help older veterans get in and out of the chair easily. Game tables such as billiards, checkers, and table tennis appeal to all three age groups

The West Mezzanine features four private rooms available for residents. Each room is fitted with a desk, computer and video technology for use during online classes or personal video calls.

Rendering: The upper level lounge in the west mezzanine provides veterans with a cozy retreat through warm
lighting and velvet upholsteries. Large built-in bookcases provide storage for games, library books and GED textbooks.
Exterior Elevation: Local recycled materials are used to create a balanced front facade that reflects the colors of the surrounding landscape. An arched, metal bus stop was designed to allow easier transportation for visitors and to encourage residents to interact with the local community.
42
Level One Community Space Rendering: Comprised of different seating postures, the level one community space promotes residents and visitors to socialize within an open and accessible space. Tall ceilings and abundant natural light improve the visual environment and prevent veterans from feeling confined. The space features a contrast of non-slip flooring materials that aid in wayfinding. Easy moveable chairs and tables allow for rearrangement of areas in the events of gatherings or social distancing instances.
Glass Panes featuring the names each branch of the armed forces act as a divider between the social space and resident corridor.
