LOG BOOK- WEEK 1- STUDIO REPORT #1 COLUMNS, GRIDS, AND WALL SYSTEMS TASK: STRUCTURAL XRAY In groups we were to analyze the structural and architectural drawings of ‘The Old Pavilion’, so as to determine which elements form part of the structural system. We were assigned half of the Old Pavilion canopy, sections 5-7. MATERIALS (MODEL MAKING): • Balsa wood • Tarzan glue • Tape • Scale Rule • Metal Ruler • Knife
DISCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS OF STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS: •
STRUCTURAL/SKELETAL SYSTEM: Designed and constructed to; support, transmit applied gravity and lateral loads safely to the ground without exceeding the allowable stresses (Ching, 2014). o The superstructure (vertical extension of a building from its foundations) o Columns, beams and loadbearing walls o Substructure (Foundations)
STRUCTUAL ELEMENTS PRESENT: •
COLUMN/STRUT: The Old Pavilion’s main structural support is a trussed column. A column performs well under compression, the trusses lend additional diagonal support, and acting in tension to ensure the structure can withstand loads.
•
CANTILEVER: Present on the canopy are several cantilever trusses. These extend out from the frame where there is reinforcement. This reinforcement being the form of an additional metal beam
•
BEAM/BRACE: We first built the major frame. The frames importance is in its purpose as a brace, it connects the cantilevers together and prevents them from moving it also provide support against dynamic loads applied vertically such as wind loads. It may additional act as an internal brace, for roof cladding.
STRUCTURAL JOINTS: •
FIXED JOINT: Resists vertical, horizontal and rotational forces. The Cantilevers on the structure act as a point of support and are fixed joints.
PHOTOGRAPHIC SEQUENCE OF THE PROCESS (1:20 SCALE MODEL OF OUR MODEL: We began by measuring 1:20 and then converting to 1:200 using a scale rule. We then began cutting the balsa wood to the appropriate sizes discovered previously. Following the architectural drawing carefully we then began to create the main frame of the old pavilion.
We then began to create the cantilevers, using Tarzan glue at each joint, and tape as additional support. Last to go upon the model were the braces.
