abstract. This projects seeks to meet people at a demographic intersection to provide a rich space to responsibly, sustainably, and accessibly create. By a strategic site selection in a repurposed car dealership, the interior is transformed with the intent of making a space that is imaginative, light, and facilitates social connection through flow and openness.

research. PROBLEM: A complex combination of policy, social structures, and economics, has created the most age-segregated society the United States has seen since its conception. People are living longer, healthier lives than ever before resulting in larger age gaps. Unfortunately, cultural constructs have become barriers to co-mingling and existing across generations. For the elderly, this can result in loneliness and isolation. For young people, this can result in the loss of perspective and soft-skills that people gain with age. • more than 40% of seniors regularly experience loneliness • around 40% of people age 16-24 report feeling lonely often or very often

Peace by piece is an intergenerational, after-school community art program which brings older adults and youth together each week to create quilts. Ages range from 5 to 90, with expert quilters to novices. This group exchanges skills while creating friendships across age/social barriers.

Cincinnati Suburbs Just 15 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, is the suburb of Western Hills, with a diverse demographic in terms of age, income, ethnicities, and more. In this community a St.V incent de Paul thrift shop occupies a former car dealership. This is approximately 25,000 SF of secondhand goods.
What opportunity does this present? Directly adjacent to the thrift shop is a current car dealership of approximately 20,000 SF. I’m proposing to occupy half the tenant space closest to the thrift shop to transform into a textile maker-space.

Transportation Metro Bus Line The site having multiple intersections of transportation types is essential for accessibility. The bus line gives students and those who are unable to drive the ability to get to the facility.

This space is a hub for reading material and planning tools. This space will also function as a shared material space-where you can pull small necessities-like thread, buttons, and scrap fabric.
Includes cafe, lounge, and a small shop to purchase tools to bring home. These zones offer rest and nourishment for nonwork time.

The section of workspace is designated for creating something completely new out of the fabric, like using scraps to make a quilt or a tote bag.
Alter. “tailor (clothing) for a better fit or to conform to fashion.” The first step in deciding what will be done with the textile you’ve brought to the space. The section of workspace is designated for alterations/repairs on clothes the user would like to keep as what it is.
