DESIGN is where SCIENCE +ART meet.
I found Landscape Architecture where my two passions met: my personal need to solve problems using creative solutions with design and my love for the natural world and its delicate ecosystems. Along the way, I discovered my responsibility to create spaces that benefit both the humans who use them and the ecosystems that are impacted, along with preserving historically significant spaces with life left in them. With personal interests in design, ecology, architecture, and history, I believe I have found my niche and would make a great addition to any team.

All design begins with three basic components: form, color, and texture. Studying these components of each project will produce a design that has multiple levels of interest and complexity. The correct form will add balance and weight to the design. Color adds drama and visual interest to the forms as well as an opportunity to create a focal point for visitors. Lastly, texture adds a third dimension to the design. Suddenly, the sketches have depth and feel.
form (v.) to bring together parts or combine to create (something).
color (n). the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light.
texture (n.): the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance.
Translation of each study in form, color, and texture to a plan completes this design process. The once basic components of design become blended together to display a space that is carefully balanced and is visually appealing.

This project, for my first planting design class, proposed a challenge to design a planter that incorporates the special needs of granite rock outcrop areas by selecting plants that will thrive in arid conditions with shallow soils.

HALL
A look back in time can open the door to design concepts that have since been forgotten. Conner Hall, a building completed in 1908, stands as an icon in the School of Agriculture on UGA’s campus. The area has a unique topographical past. It once was home to agricultural terraces. This historic landscape, however was plowed over to create more parking space for staff and students. The main goal of this project was to imitate the topography that could have been found in the early history of Athens.

This lot near Athens, Georgia was originally a small bank and the location of a project for my first planting design class. After being sold to new owners, the space was renovated to become a cafe. The client requested there be shade provided in the parking lot, screening along the northern property edge, and an overall balance.

Infill Housing Project athens, georgia
This project in Athens presents many design opportunities. The first challenge is to use the site’s existing topography to influence the design. Secondly, homeowners have requested a garage, an outdoor entertaining area, and a secluded/private area. Lastly, the new elderly homeowners require there be ramps instead of steps in in thier yard, creating unique design possiblilties. The site decreases ten feet in elevation from the back of the lot, giving the opportinuity for a negative edge pool, a retaining wall, and slowly sloped pathways.
