This season marks important departures for our list. Firstly, on the book front, the launch of our most ambitious series to date. Crystal Astrology for Modern Life combines two of publishing’s favorite subjects, crystals and astrology, into a collection of pure beauty, with amazing crystal photography, illustrations, graphics and, of course, inspired writing. And if your appetite for a more spiritually balanced life was not yet satisfied by those twelve volumes, you will find plenty more in Joey Hulin’s Mind & Bowl or Isla MacLeod’s Rituals for Life, in my view the best book on this ever current subject – made even more inspiring by Luisa Rivera’s illustrations. And while we are on the subject of lifestyles, we have the perfect book for these WFH times in How to Plant a Room, the long-awaited follow-up to Morgan Doane and Erin Harding’s How to Raise a Plant. It is also worth mentioning how our photography list is entering new fertile ground with As We See It, a book in which up-and-coming writer Aida Amoako showcases a new generation of non-white artists and photographers reshaping Black identity. It is also worth mentioning that our Harlem Renaissance jigsaw features a previous generation who did the same thing, shaking culture and identity from New York to Paris and beyond some one hundred years earlier. And there are more departures as we move over to our gift list, starting with two original board games. The Shakespeare Game will transpose you to Elizabethan London and assess your brilliance as a bard and theatrical entrepreneur, while You Are the President will test your idealism and political mettle. Do you have what it takes to make the world a better place? Or just a more fun place? Talking of ambition, our bingos have never been as gorgeous. You can spend an afternoon in the company of Agatha Christie’s characters and plots, or meander through the superb illustrations of our Tree Bingo (featuring not just the trees, but their leaves, fruit, flowers… their full regalia!) But the biggest departures are in this Autumn’s jigsaw list. After the success of our literary jigsaws (from Shakespeare to Jane Austen) we are now taking it one step further and working directly with those great writers. No, not Shakespeare’s ghost… But living legends. The celebrated Scottish thriller writer Ian Rankin takes us through the mean streets of Edinburgh turning pavement stones into a darkly colourful jigsaw pieces, while the bestselling classicist Natalie Haynes transposes the mythical world of her groundbreaking books into an epic visual poem in 1000 pieces. The astonishing heroines of Greek myths have never seemed so close us. And talking of inventive jigsaw formats, our highly successful ‘299 somethings and… a something’ series dives into the ocean with hundreds of sea creatures (as well as a diver) for you to piece together. Come on, be brave, go for it, headfirst!

HANGING PLANTS / MODERN BEADED PLANT HANGER

For decades plant hangers have been made in homes around the world. While they have gone in and out of fashion through the years, they’re back now and can be customized in countless ways. Hanging plants in the home is not only beautiful and stylish, but also a great way to keep plants out of reach of children and pets. We love this project because it’s so easy—you don’t need to learn how to tie a bunch of knots to make something that looks really great. The best part about it is that there’s no right way. Get creative with your beading to produce the look you want!

Variations Here we show just one way to make a modern beaded plant hanger, but there are many variations to this project. We used 3-mm macramé cord, but you could opt for hemp rope, string, or yarn instead. The length of the plant hanger can be adjusted to fit your needs. Here we show you how to make a plant hanger that is approximately 36 inches (90cm) long from the top of the wooden ring to the bottom of the fringe. It will happily accommodate pots up to 6 inches (15cm) in diameter. Wooden beads like the ones we use here can be found at craft stores or online. Be aware of the bead size and hole opening, since the bead must fit easily over the six strands of cord. Another way to customize your hanger would be to paint or stain the beads instead of leaving them their natural color—this way they could be matched to your home decor. The possibilities are endless!

One way of depicting this reality is demonstrated by the symbol of the Tree of Life, or World Tree in shamanic traditions.4 The Tree of Life reveals the different dimensions of reality that coexist and collaborate through a vertical dimension, the Axis Mundi.5 This is the central axis that runs through the worlds, which shamans use to travel between dimensions and create a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. The middle world is represented by the trunk, symbolising the physical reality we inhabit that connects us with the other worlds; the lower world is depicted as being the roots, or underworld, where our ancestors can be found; the upper spirit world can be reached by the branches of the Tree of Life. If the invisible realms are not acknowledged and attended to by those in the middle world, imbalance occurs and the tree is cut off from its roots and unable to bear fruit.

• ANCESTORS • POWER ANIMALS

In many indigenous cultures the veneration of ancestors is a vital part of community life, honouring those who birthed us and seeded their dreams, wisdom and resilience within us. In the Yoruba tradition (an ethnic group native to western Africa), the dead are buried at home and not in a cemetery so that the family can wish their ancestors good morning each day and good night before they go to bed. When someone dies a loved one says ‘Odabo’, which means ‘see you soon’, because the ancestors will visit in dreams or visions and be attended to in daily life with prayers and offerings at an ancestral shrine. Festivals dedicated to tending the spirits of the dead are present worldwide in the Celtic Samhain, Mexican Day of the Dead, and Obon in Japan, creating a vital, rich landscape of belonging. By ritually attending the dead, the living create a bridge to the invisible realms, helping the dead to cross over and become well ancestors who can help guide and inspire the living. An awareness of their presence and influence can also help the living disentangle from inherited beliefs and patterns that have been passed down.

about my workspace before starting a new project, in my car if I am embarking on a long journey, and around any room that I feel needs a quick clearing of energy. In addition to your home environment, you might want to change your physical appearance with a haircut, or reimagine your style by wearing some bold, eccentric clothes that you were saving for a summer festival! Finding ways to push your comfort zone will expand your capacity for welcoming new experiences, so taking playful steps to explore different ways of expressing yourself can be immensely rewarding. The initiatory energy of spring makes it a supportive time to begin new routines and create wellbeing practices to complement the vision you have for your best self; consider joining a new fitness class, committing to a daily meditation practice or finding a club to connect with others who share a similar passion or hobby. Follow your joy and seek out what brings you real soul-level nourishment, while listening to the needs of your body. Take an honest inventory of yourself and see what needs to change in your life so you are able to thrive. You can create the conditions for inner wellbeing by enjoying a spring cleanse or detox, following a green diet filled with wild plants and plenty of water to flush out the toxins for a week, or omitting certain things from your diet, such as sugar, alcohol or dairy. Fasting also offers a powerful way to reset the system and can be done intermittently each day, only eating for the six hours between noon and 6pm, or by carrying out a three-day fast. The barriers to change are nearly always found in your mind and the well-trodden pathways you have created by living habitually and often unconsciously. Witnessing your thoughts without attaching to

Creative process The creative process is complex and non-linear. Experimenting is part of the protocol, and leads to exciting discovery. It demands an abundance of imagination and passion. The process of designing fashion does not have a well-defined beginning and end. It cannot be tied to a 9 to 5 schedule. Inspiration may visit randomly. Taking a walk or listening to a song can spark an idea. These inspirations percolate and emerge within their own time. A ride on the subway, daydreaming, or sleeping may bring forth exciting possibilities.

Tamara Albu is Associate Professor of Fashion at Parsons School of Design, where she has developed a number of their courses including Fashion Portfolio. She has also guest lectured and conducted workshops internationally at a number of institutions in China, as well as in Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Saudia Arabia and Kyrgyzstan.

Inspiration A designer can draw inspiration from anything: a time period, a manner of material manipulation, or a specific muse. When this inspiration is clearly demonstrated within your portfolio, it informs and supports the customer profile. Inspiration is part of the unique story of your collection. It sets you apart and calls to employers. Some designers are inspired by an actual person, their image, or style. This could be an iconic figure such as Princess Diana, or a Pop icon such as Prince Others find outsiders such as Teddy Boys or the Punks motivating. In some cases, designers tap into their own needs, desires, shopping habits, aesthetic affinities or socio-economic background to model collections for audiences like themselves. In these cases, the designer acts as their own target customer, or even as their own muse.

The Sketchbook as a Designer’s Diary Interesting designs may come to you in the blink of an eye. To avoid losing them, it is essential to develop a system to capture your ideas while they are fresh. Every designer finds their own method of collecting thoughts. Some prefer a sketchbook, others use dedicated folders organized by category: i.e. sketches and notes, research and inspirational images, fabric sourcing. These are all forms of a designer’s diary or journal and offer a refuge for you to create and experiment without any self-imposed restrictions. The unleashed imagination results in a flood of ideas to be curated and culled later. Sketches are usually rough and filled with creative immediacy. They can be supported by quick notes, fabric swatches and bits of reference. A diary may serve as a way to document or plan a fashion show. Collection: Development, Identity and Focus

This intimate personal collection may supply material for a mood board. Waiting within this barrage of creative thought may be a collection concept, theme, silhouette information, a color story or fabric story. We all have good days, when ideas pour out, and those other days when nothing seems to work. A journal’s treasures can pay off when you confront these dry periods.

The main material used in fashion bags other than leather is a type of plastic called polyurethane or PU. PU, also called ‘synthetic leather’ is used extensively in footwear, fashion bags and accessories as a cheaper and vegan alternative to animal leather. It has also been used as a replacement for PVC which is the most environmentally damaging plastic of all. PU can be made out of recycled plastic bottles and both virgin and recycled PU can be made to look and feel indistinguishable for genuine leather. PU can be manufactured in a range of colours, textures and finished that emulate all the variations of leather hides at a much lower price. Because PU does not have the restrictions of leather skins in terms of size and imperfections, it is cost effective and less wasteful during manufacture so it is ideal for mid to lower priced bags but has been used throughout the industry at every level. The downside, is that PU is not breathable and does not wear in like leather. It can be torn and cannot be easily repaired so PU bags are quickly discarded once they are damaged. And while fewer resources are used to make PU than other synthetic materials, like all plastics it is originally made from fossil fuels and does not decompose. Designers such as Stella McCartney, Comme des Garcon and Matt & Nat have all used PU to create fashion bags and accessories.

Cotton Cotton is produced in different ways and can be woven to different thicknesses and types of cloth like canvas and denim. It can be finished in different colours, and coated to make it waterproof or more durable. Cotton material can be made from sustainably produced, recycled cotton or traditionally grown chemically treated cotton.

have a glazed finish and are used extensively to create fashion accessories providing an alternative to leather hides. They are durable, water-proof and similar to leather, they acquire an aged appearance over time. Cotton fabrics are biodegradability and recycled cotton fibres are often combined with other fabrics to add strength. Cotton canvas is a staple material for most brands. Spanish luxury brand Loewe introduced their Balloon shoulder bag as a new signature piece crafted from canvas combined with a leather trim but canvas has been used by Celine, Louise Vuitton, Prada and Barbour and many more.

It is spun into yarns and woven into different densities of cloth which will affect the weight of a bag for example when it is used to make canvas, which is a much denser material. Cotton is usually coated with wax using a technique originally used in ships sails in the 19th Century. Waxed materials

Materials

Polyester Polyester is commonly used for making bags and backpacks used for branding purposes. Although it was invented in 1941 it became popular in the 1970s when it was used in brightly coloured materials for casual cloth and disco wear. This gave polyester a reputation as a cheap fabric. Made from plastic, polyester bags are foldable and lightweight but do not break down and biodegrade easily. They take printing inks well and are ideal for creating branded printed bags and have been used extensively as reusable give away promotional products. The sheer amount of plastic waste produced each year has encouraged innovative solutions to recycling polyester. There is no difference between recycled polyester and virgin polyester in terms of performance, durability, or strength. Brands such as SKFK have pioneered the use of recycled polyester fabrics in their bag ranges.

growth in consumer trends toward recycled, vegan, eco-friendly and fair trade products many fashion accessories brands have begun to explore sustainable and ethical materials as commercial alternatives to leather. With the growth of the vegan fashion market natural alternatives being trialled for use in accessories include cork and bark fibre reinforced with polymers, and innovative leather substitutes derived from pineapple, coconuts, grapes, coffee, mushrooms and seaweed. Many are emerging as viable alternatives to leather along with re-purposed and upcycled materials.

was originally intended for military use during World War II. After the war the trend for modern materials saw acrylic plastic materials like Lucite and Perspex adopted for use in fashion accessories. Acrylic materials can be shaped, dyed, textured, produced in any colour or left clear and made to imitate tortoiseshell and ivory. Acrylic is tough and durable, but can be easily scratched. The manufacturing process can release toxic fumes and it is not biodegradable but it can be reused. The popularity of acrylic plastics has not diminished and they remain extensively used for fashion bags particularly clutch styles. Los Angeles based brand, The Cult of Gaia, created one of Fashion’s most famous IT bags using acrylic plastic. Their half-circle contemporary take on the Ark bag is constructed of jointed acrylic pieces woven together.

Rubber Every year millions of rubber tubes are sent to landfill so there are clear environmental benefits to reclaiming rubber. Synthetic rubber is not biodegradable so this glut of types and rubber inner tubes presents a huge resource perfect for reimagining into innovative products that go beyond the soles of shoes. The textured matte finish of rubber and its strength makes it a perfect choice for directional bags. Brands such as Paguro have reinvented recycled rubber to create innovative fashion bags that are a real alternative to leather. Paguro also use a wide range of other reclaimed and repurposed materials including reclaimed canvas.

There are estimated to be 51 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans, a single plastic bag can take 20 years to decompose, plastic bottles last as long as 450 years, and fishing line, 600 years. The frightening escalation of plastic pollution in the ocean has created an opportunity to develop a new non-natural material that is being used within the fashion industry. Parley for the Oceans is an environmental global network that aims to collaborate with brands and designers to explore environmental initiatives. Regenerative Fashion A Nature-based Approach to Fibres, Livelihoods and Friendship Safia Minney Regenerative Fashion presents the future of fashion built on the regenerative use of natural resources and the revival of craft in the global South. It shares the stories of our interconnectedness with the natural world - and each other - and the urgency we face in the convergence of crises: the climate crisis and social crisis highlighted by the fight for racial justice. Fashion has been inspired by nature for hundreds of years. Biomimicry highlights our dependence on nature and why we must shift fashion to respect this. A new commercial approach is possible and Safia Minney shows how it can be done through a regeneration, which goes beyond sustainability. With dozens of case study interviews from best practise designers and organizations and initiatives around the worlds, as well as thought pieces from leading figures (Orsola de Castro, Dilys Williams. Kate Fletcher etc). AUTHOR

Folding Techniques for Designers

Folding Techniques For Designers

Second Edition

Paul Jackson

With 10 vid eo tutori als

From Sheet to Form

From Sheet to Form Paul Jackson Many designers, from jewellers to architects, use folding techniques to make three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional sheets of fabric, cardboard, plastic, metal and other materials. This unique handbook explains key folding techniques, such as pleated surfaces, curved folding and crumpling. It has been updated with a new chapter covering some lesserknown techniques, suggesting yet more creative possibilities. The techniques are accompanied by clear step-by-step drawings, specially commissioned photography and ten new instructional videos. AUTHOR

Second Edition

Paul Jackson is the author of over 30 books on paper arts and crafts. He has taught the techniques of folding on over 150 university level design courses in the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US, Canada and Israel and been a 'folding consultant' for companies such as Nike and Siemens. He is the founder and director of the Israeli Origami Centre.

9. MISCELLANEOUS TECHNIQUES 9.6. Curved Folding 9.6.3. ‘S’ Curves

Two Curves in Opposition

The simplest way to put two curves on a sheet is to place them in symmetrical opposition to each other. There are just two ways of doing this, although clearly, their position on the sheet and their distance from each other will change the result somewhat.

9.6.3.

‘S’ Curves

The curve may bend as previously described in one direction, like a letter ‘C’, but it can also bend in two directions like a letter ‘S’, or even several. The effect can be very lyrical, allowing light and shade to creep delicately over the curved planes.

9.6.2 _ 1 The bend of the curves should be equal, and neither too great nor too shallow. There is a sweet spot where the curve is just about ideal for the effect. The best way to find it is to make a few examples. Sometimes, experimentation is the only way!

9.6.3 _ 1 As before, use a template to draw an accurate curve with the back of a knife. ‘S’ curves will not end up as tight as the simpler ‘C’ curves, remaining relatively open and flat.

Pairs of curves may be placed along a strip.

MISCELLANEOUS TECHNIQUES Step-folds in Origami Books

Step-folds in Origami Books

This is not an origami book. At least, it is not a book of representational models of animals, flowers and objects. From that, it may be falsely assumed that origami is irrelevant to the designer in search of folded forms that do not resemble an elephant or a lily. However, instead of looking dismissively at the final model, look instead at some of the step-folds; that is, some of the folded forms made on the way to folding that model. Some of them are exceptionally interesting and can easily become a source of design inspiration. Generally, the early step-fold forms are more useful than the later ones, which can be too detailed. References are best found in books, rather than online instructional videos. This is because step-fold forms can be assessed quickly from line illustrations or photographs, whereas in a video they are often more difficult to see.

9.5 _ 1 These illustrations of step-folds are taken from origami models designed by the author over the last few years. The models themselves are unimportant – so their names, such as ‘Flower’, ‘Baby Bird’ and ‘Candle Holder’ have been removed – it is the step-folds that are of interest.

9.5 _ 2 Whereas the drawings make the forms look singular, stiff and geometric, the photographs reveal the forms to be unexpectedly fluid – they can be pulled open, collapsed, twisted, folded in half and more, to create many new forms not seen in the drawings.

Some are 2-D, others 3-D; some look to be of practical use, others are perhaps more decorative. Some will flex or collapse, some are rigid. What they have in common is that they are forms that are not easily found by thinking in the abstract. Instead, they are forms that are found when creating representational models, and because of this, they are different from the forms found elsewhere in this book, offering something fresh and new to the designer. If you have an aversion to the craft of origami, look again. Some of the step-folds can be more interesting than the final models. Two of the forms can be seen in the photographs opposite.

12. WHAT SHOULD YOUR BRAND DO AND NOT DO?

pillars of classical marketing is not a bad structure to help think it through: Product, Promotion, Point of Sale, Packaging, People. One could include an infinite variety of examples – I have chosen the following six.

AUTHOR

Daryl Fielding has held senior roles in advertising, media and marketing. She has created new brand strategies across many categories, from Dove to Vodafone, and is a recognised speaker on brands and marketing leadership.

Promotion A good example of this is Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty, which almost immediately became known as the ‘Real Women’ campaign in the press and among consumers. When we were creating the ads, we had to decide what we did or didn’t do with regard to the casting and to the photography to ensure that the integrity of the idea remained. With regard to casting, we had to define what we meant by a real woman – after all, even Cindy Crawford is real! In the end we decided that any woman who had not had an agent at the time of the casting defined her as ‘real’. There was a lot of debate about whether that ruled out musicians or dancers, but in the end, we settled on the lack of agency representation as the best way we could be objective when we made those decisions. We felt that people who were paid to perform would probably not show up as authentically as women who were not. A fine distinction, but we had to make it somehow and to make it clear to 400 marketers worldwide who had to deliver their own versions of the advertising.

CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 1

1. WHAT IS A BRAND AND WHY DO BRANDS MATTER?

digital. A CEO might be very antipathetic to brand building if, to her, it is synonymous with spending vast sums on TV commercials. She will, however, care hugely about the company’s reputation. And should be willing to invest to build it.

What is a brand and why do brands matter? A clear definition of ‘brand’ There are over half a billion results if you type ‘definition of a brand’ into Google search. For those of you who have not quite the time to sift this cornucopia of wisdom for the perfect definition, let me give you the one that I like: ‘A brand is the sum of the product and its reputation.’ Or informally: ‘The thing and what people think about the thing.’ And for product, read service, organisation or any entity. I’m going to call any of these things ‘the product’ from now on to keep matters simple. To me, the product is what people buy, in the broadest sense of that word. It’s what you are offering, whatever that is. The product and reputation are inextricably entwined. Make a bad product and your reputation will suffer. And the reputation you have will drive the kind of products you develop. If you are known for flame grilling, then you will look for more stuff to flame grill. If you are a retailer with a reputation for high end glamorous fashion, you may expend into homewares, but at the blingier end of the design spectrum. Once defined in this way, the discourse about brand rises above the unedifying debate that rages in the marketing industry about image advertising vs the measurability of 6

22

What should your brand do and not do?

‘A brand is the sum of the product and its reputation.’ Product or service

The world’s oldest brands Some brands go way back. Weihenstephan and Weltenburger breweries each claim to be the oldest German beer brand, having been founded in 1040 and 1050 respectively. Sudo Honke is a Japanese brand of premium Sake founded in 1141 and one of the oldest brands and companies in the world. Guangyuyuan is a Chinese herbal remedy dating from 1541 and is still one of the biggest brands in China. Bushmills, a northern Irish distillery, was granted a licence in 1609. As Colum Egan, the head distiller, says: ‘We’re not the best because we’re the oldest, we’re the oldest because we’re the best.’ Whether you agree with his assessment or not (some prefer a Scottish single malt, me included), staying in business for over 400 years, with the same brand, demands respect. And Egan’s brand-centric point that maintaining quality has made that firm sustainable should give pause for thought. Founded in the UK in 1706, Twining’s tea created its logo in 1787 – believed to be the oldest brand mark in continuous

Brands will be judged as much by what they do and don’t do as by what they say. This is ever more significant in the days where reputations are built and trashed very quickly on social media and in user reviews. Any organization can be called out when it is found to be hypocritical, for instance not complying with its own policies. In my experience, brand behaviours evolve naturally, and I would counsel against inventing the rules on this too early. If you do, you’ll get overburdened with rules and regulations, and some will prove unnecessary – both the kiss of death for getting them adopted by the wider organization. As you begin to act on your strategy, you’ll find those things you do that support the strategy and you’ll get a feeling that this is something you should always do. Then it’s worth defining them and making them part of the brand guidelines. Brand behaviour also covers the organizations that a brand might support, such as sponsorships and charity partnerships or preferred areas for staff volunteering. Of course, partnerships and sponsorships form a key aspect of marketing, and these also need to be aligned with the strategy for the brand. But this chapter deals with the less high-profile aspects of brand behaviour, which all underpin and build a well-rounded and authentic brand. The sort of things a brand should and shouldn’t do are infinitely variable, but the relevant ‘P’ 105

Dove’s Honest Beauty campaign, featuring Irene (age 96).

At the time we were creating the campaign, Kate Winslet had just had a major row with GQ magazine after they stretched her cover photo image to lengthen her legs and make her look slimmer. This widespread practise represents unrealistic ideals that impact the self-esteem of women and was one of the forces we were battling against. We had to have standards of behaviour that measured up to our ideology and we decided not to retouch or manipulate our photographs. Our brand behaviour in this instance was not what we messaged overtly in our ads, but is an example of what we did and didn’t do to uphold the integrity of our brand promise of Honest Beauty. Our customers could tell that our women were not fake and that helped massively with their love for and trust in the brand. As promotion becomes more and more digitally enabled, companies need to adopt policies with regard to automated customer contact that works for driving sales as well as building, or at least not detracting from, the brand. For example, some simple principles on how often you email, whether you serve ads on social media following searches and how often or what you do with abandoned shopping carts. Balancing the frequency and personalization of messaging with relevance and sense of intrusion or use of customer data is a minefield that many organisations are navigating. There are whole books on this topic, so all I would say is that it is the role of the brand director to consider how this will affect the brand. Much as I love Net-a-Porter (an on-line retailer of designer goods) and am a regular customer, I feel they cheapen their brand by emailing me every day. I am less bothered by their discount stablemate, The Outnet, doing so. Interestingly, Apple, the master of unattainable allure, do so once a week, and, knowing them, this will not be an accident. Airbnb ensure that contacting customers about abandoned carts does not feel like stalking and high pressure selling, by sending highly relevant and timely messages about the destination rather than about the customer’s buying behaviour. Someone who has searched for a destination and when they plan to travel would be sent a prompt email 107

Getting to grips with copywriting

“If you are a writer of novels, or plays, or poetry, you can write and take your own time, generally speaking. But in advertising, you’ve got deadlines, you’ve got to have the idea, and it’s got to be a great one, and you’ve got to have it Tuesday morning.” David Ogilvy

In Mesopotamia, the earliest cuneiform writing was developed to record ownership of animals and goods. Writing was at the heart of trading, and its invention was the catalyst for the dawning of modern civilization. It is now one of our greatest forms of expression, and, whatever the brief, is a powerful tool for all types of business. The techniques of creative copywriting are really about finding the most natural way to communicate well with others. Business has one aim: to deliver a profit. Everyone in every sort of commercial enterprise is trying to sell a product or service for more than it costs them to produce it, and make an honest profit to live off. Selling – which is what you’re doing when you’re writing copy – used to be a case of steering customer demand by pointing people in the direction of the leading brands. Before the competitive nature of the global marketplace really hotted up, all you needed to do to have a viable business was to identify and satisfy a customer need. Our abundant times have created a huge amount of choice, and with choice comes competition: it is no longer enough to hold up your hand and tell your customers where you are; you now have to tell them why you are

• the value of effective writing across different forms of marketing communications • how understanding and writing for a defined audience is critical for commercial success • the importance of communicating benefits rather than features and the value of creating intrigue • the use of consistent and appropriate tone of voice for effective and engaging creative communication.

A STRONG CREATIVE HOOK TO GRAB ATTENTION AND PROVOKE INTEREST. First paragraph: Creative copy giving clarification to the headline, rewarding the reader for looking into it, and promising lots of interesting discoveries in the following copy.

Verbs. So, focusing on verbs, ask these questions of your language for 3: 1. Can you turn a noun into a verb? 2. Can you make the verb form active without a trace of the passive? 3. Can you choose verbs that give out energy rather than simply exist? The tone is created by increasing the number of verbs while reducing the number of nouns (these make it more difficult to gain a full understanding in a quick reading). An example of this would be changing “our quality control is good” to “we check everything”.

Creative writing for business is challenging and rewarding in equal measure, and when it all comes together with great design to create innovative communications it can feel like the best job in the world. Copywriting is an essential part of the design communications mix, and those of us who do it for a living will tell you that crafting messages and telling stories is a rewarding mental process, even in the business context. You’ll find that being able to generate a response from your audience is a valuable and highly sought-after skill. Copy (or text, or words) used in design is a very particular type of creative writing that requires the inspiration of an artist and the control of a craftsman or craftswoman. In comparison to the rails on which the copywriter runs, the novelist or poet has no limitations. Poetry and storytelling are flights of the imagination, with no client or news editor to bear in mind. Whether the personality of the writer shines through directly or indirectly, this is the purest creative writing – it can take off in any direction, be as fictional as it wants to be and go wherever it pleases. Writing copy, however, is all about sticking to a brief, while paying homage to the creativity and style of the poet and storyteller. Journalists and copywriters are commercial writers, but the essence of their roles is completely different. In most cases journalists have to create the story from scratch, usually by following leads. They will have to research the facts to get to the heart of the matter, discover the different viewpoints and opinions and bring this material together accurately and coherently. Articles are often written to a tightly defined structure, while features can allow more room for individual expression and the interweaving of the writer’s viewpoint. The message has to be factually correct, balanced and fair, but the writer is allowed to take a stance, which could reflect that of the newspaper or, in the case of a regular column, the writer’s own opinion. Copywriting borrows from all other fields of writing in its quest for creative expression, but there is no room for your personality in the copy that you write; you are simply a scribe, a hired mouthpiece for your client, and it is the brand’s voice that must come through, loudly and clearly. The starting point, whether you’re working on a one-off project or are writing copy every day, is to set aside your ego, forget all ideas about expressing your own thoughts and put on the company overalls. You’ll be surprised how well they fit and how good you look in them.

Good writing makes things happen

In this chapter you will learn about:

The tone-of-voice guide for the telecommunications company 3 explains how to write for the brand, recommending that the writer clears away adjectives to leave real simplicity, and uses immediate emotion and a simple energy without dumbing down.

Successful writing for design, advertising and marketing

Why do I need to know about copy?

Fresh and original writing oils the wheels of every aspect of commercial activity, and language is a key element of many forms of modern design. Copywriting is not about copying – it’s about communicating in an original way. You can put a sentence together, and your imagination is alive and well, so you have everything it takes to be a creative writer. All you need are some guidelines to help you figure out when your writing is good, and a little inspiration from some practitioners in the field.

TÜNDÉR

TOO MUCH HELP IS WORSE THAN NONE AT ALL!

HUNGARY

The Tündér are powerful female fairies of Hungary. They protect orphans and help the poor by giving them pearls. When they brush their long golden hair, they scatter gold into rivers and streams. They wear white and can fly, taking the form of a swan. Some say the Tündér used to live among people, but left long ago as they do not like the modern world. They retreated to their mountaintop palaces, which have beautiful gardens, each with a golden, spinning summerhouse. By moonlight, the Tündér come out to dance, and may sometimes visit human gardens, too, where they water and care for their favourite flowers.

If he planted vegetables, they died. If he mended a fence, it broke again. The man was fed up, so he asked a wise old woman what to do. She told him to buy some Galtzagorri, who would change his life. The man bought a box of four Galtzagorri. He opened it, and out jumped the little imps, shouting “What do you want us to do?” The man was delighted. He asked the Galtzagorri to plough his field and plant seeds. They did it in minutes. Desperate to stop them, the man gave the Galtzagorri a sieve. “Fetch me some water in this!” he said. That would keep them busy! But when the Galtzagorri tried to fill the sieve and failed, they were angry. “You have given us an impossible task!” they shouted. “We’re leaving! Tips, Tricks and Ideas to Reinvent Your Photography

AUTHOR

David Gibson is a UK-based street THE STREET photographer, writer and teacher. He is PHOTOGRAPHY the author of The Street Photographer's CHALLENGE Manual – now in its second edition – as well as Street Photography: A History in 100 Iconic Images (2019).

INFO 9780857829177 50 illustrated cards 4 11/16 x 6 1/4 inches £14.99 incl. UK VAT SEPTEMBER 2022

Capture a reflection, play with layers, blatantly blur, or just try and ‘shoot nothing’. The Street Photography Challenge is a boxed set of 50 cards, each giving keen photographers a simple prompt or idea for snapping great images in everyday environments. Flip the card over for an example image, and turn to the enclosed booklet when you need more detail. Also includes 10 bonus cards of inspirational quotes and key tips from some of the legends of street photography, from Daido Moriyama to Joel Meyerowitz. Forget about lenses, shutter speeds and apertures – just grab your camera or phone, pull a card, and get out there!

THE ART AND CHALLENGE OF STREET PHOTOGRAPHY Street photography is real: it is not set up. It is ordinary life on the street, sometimes made extraordinary. It has attitude; it can be edgy, dark, humorous, poignant, just plain odd and sometimes beautiful. Street photography is not an exact discipline; it strays into other territories, such as documentary, reportage and portraiture. It celebrates colour and light, often with finely constructed compositions, but it is also poetic, reflective and slightly abstract. Sometimes it features people, and sometimes it is about the absence of people, which can be equally as powerful. The work of the husband-and-wife team of Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb expresses these nuances beautifully.

HOW TO USE THE CARDS You might close your eyes and pick one or two of the cards out of the box before you hit the streets. Take an idea and see where it leads, adapting to what suits you. One of the hardest challenges of street photography is building up a signature style. Bruce Gilden’s up-close, in-your-face images are sometimes quite brutal and may not be to everyone’s taste, but they are consistently recognisable as the work of Bruce Gilden. As you experiment with the challenges, don’t be afraid to inject your own personality. By the same token, don’t be afraid to vary your approach, to build up a style and then look for ways to move forward.

‘Working within the constraints of a single subject or technique can really bring out your creativity.’ If a card concept particularly resonates with you, try creating a series of works to more thoroughly explore it. Joel Meyerowitz did a whole workshop in New York based around the particular energy of street corners. What an innovative idea! Meyerowitz’s gregarious style is perfectly suited to the busy flow of people caught in the eddy of a street corner. It would be a challenge for me to attempt this subject, but maybe stepping away from my comfort zone would be enlightening. Sometimes working within the constraints of a single subject or technique can really bring out your creativity.

What camera you use does not really matter. A few years ago William Klein and Daido Moriyama, two giants of photography, had a big touring exhibition. Photographically, they are strange bedfellows, perhaps, but they are also kindred spirits, and this collaboration was not random. Both photographers over the years have used different cameras. While one might imagine Klein in his studio work using a formal, high-end camera, such as a Hasselblad, a documentary shows him in later years using a small, cheap digital camera on the street. Moriyama, never a studio photographer, currently uses a small Ricoh GR camera, which fits his frenetic, loose, informal style.

‘The camera you use for street photography is of far less interest than what you do with it.’ I have long held the view that a camera close up to the eye is best, as an extension of the eye, but now that we have mobile phone cameras, such rigidity and rules have become less certain. Magnum photographer Gueorgui Pinkhassov frequently uses his phone as a camera, taking both still shots and short videos, and the results are remarkable and inspiring. Ultimately, the make and model of the camera you use for street photography is of far less interest than what you do with it.

which of their monsters will fight in the next monster battle, then all the other players do the same in turn. The person who turns over the biggest group of monsters (highest value card) wins that battle. The winner of the battle takes that group of cards and places them faceup in a separate pile, growing their monster army. Battles continue until all the cards have been played. Count up the cards in your faceup pile: whoever has the most cards has the biggest army and is the winner of the Monster War! For a longer game, add any cards you win to the bottom of your facedown playing pile and keep going until one player has won all the monsters over to their side, becoming the ultimate winner of the Monster War.

MONSTER WAR

MAT H SKI LLS :

ing Watch out, you are entering a com par s. num ber battleground! These monsters are in the middle of a war, and they need you to find out whose monster army will win.

Deal all the cards out equally between players. Hold your cards facedown in one pile. The youngest player kicks off the fight by turning their uppermost card faceup to see

MONSTER MATCH The monsters love to play together, but their favorite thing is to meet up with their best friends in matching groups. Will you help them find each other?

MAT H SKI LLS :

Deal out the cards equally between the players and hold your cards facedown in a pile. Take it in turns to turn one card faceup into a pile in the middle. Look out for monster matches, e.g. two 3s. When you spot a pair, shout ‘monster match!’ The first player to shout ‘monster match!’ and correctly count up all the monsters on those two cards (in this case 3 + 3 = 6) can take all the cards in the middle pile. Put the matched-up monsters aside in your points pile so they can play with their friends. If you get the total number of monsters wrong (you might be really rushing to get there first!), the cards stay on the table and play continues. (They will be swept up with the next pair, the next time someone shouts ‘monster match!’) Keep going until all the cards have been played. The player with the most cards in their points pile is the winner.

To take this game to the next level, add up the value of all the monster matches in your points pile to calculate your monster bff points. In this version, it’s the player with the highest monster count that wins— and that might not be the player with the most cards…

MONSTER KINGDOMS The kings of the four monster kingdoms (snot, crystal, hair, and fire) have announced a competition to choose their successors.
