My design for the spatial composition model drew upon Japanese culture, in particular the art of origami. Adopting the traditional method of creating the art without the use of cutting and sticking, my design was created purely by creating folds in the material used to create the partially enclosed frame.

My design also challenged the notion of partial enclosure as I combined the effects of light and shadow with a transparent material such as clear perspex. This resulted in a form that appeared to have full enclosure due to the shadows cast which connected the form, but in reality was only partially enclosed.

For my landforming design I wanted to create a model which reflected the natural elements of a mountainous landscape. Drawing influence from the Victorian Alps and in particular the Crosscut Saw ridge, I aimed to replicate the unrefined beauty of the natural land formations which I achieved through the use of crumpled stiffened material.

Based on the compositional strategy of disjunction, my assemblage model combined elements from both the spatial composition and landforming tasks. I aimed to create a tenuous relationship between the two intertwined formal systems conflicting and competing for the title of single hierarchy which either achieves.

debate. Spinning round and round, a whirlwind of continuous conflict. The daily torment, it’s killing me. Here, there, anywhere really, just make it stop. But no, it can only grow. why? how? Why can’t it stop? How can it stop? Answers. they’re all I’m looking for really, But where? nowhere to be found. Higher and higher, eternal tension rises. Yet the mind, it can only take so much more. And with that, the strength of a voice arises. Years of silence no longer, all in one momentous rage, It explodes. This short narrative explores the constant torment experienced by ones conscious, influenced by my exploration of disjunction. I aimed to express a daily debate of self-expression that evokes slight confusion, and its resulting consequences.

My superimposition collage comprised of three layers respectively, the site with the inclusion of movement intensity, my assemblage model and elements of my spatio-temporal narrative collage.

Extracting key elements from the superimposition collage and furthering the principal of disjunction, by combining various elements, I began to activate them through their differences creating a new refined base which will form the basis of my final design.

My experience collage aimed to depict an atmosphere that would be experienced throughout the site. I aimed to depict the variety of spaces that would be available to enjoy, for either individually or groups. Throughout the design I also wanted a key element to be a directional focus, meaning that specific paths are outlines throughout the site for people to move through. This would be achieved by the inclusion of shaded areas created by such as the wooden framing which you would walk through and feel encompassed by the surrounding structural form.

The spatial arrangement of my final design was drawn from my superimposition collage plan , which was refined with the consideration of human interaction in mind, forming the basis of my final design.

SECTION B
SCALE 1:50 @ A1
My partial section focused on the materials that have been used within my final design. Entirely consisting of wood and glass their specific effects greatly contributed to the aesthetics of the overall final design. Wood was my given material to work with, which I idolised within my final design. I used the natural effects of the wood grain to contrast and balance the cutting geometry of the spatial design, and glass was used after consideration for the beauty of the surrounding context to still be experiened throughout the site.

Considering the context of my site within the university, the final outcome of my design created numerous spaces for people to utilise, including individual spaces for activities such as studying as well as areas for groups to gather and enjoy. The geometry within my design conveys with strong evidence and was majorly influenced dating back to original tasks such as my assemblage model. In terms of experiencing the site, I aimed to create a sense of grandeur creating a design that would become an iconic feature within the university. As observed in my original site observations, I noticed the large site was not being maximally utilised, and with this design I have aimed to improved this, achieved by a design that directs movement all throughout the site utilising the area to its greatest potential.
