PRESS RELEASE Jeanne Lanvin Exhibition Launch at Palais Galliera The Palais Galliera, in close collaboration with Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin, is honoring the oldest French fashion house still in business. This is the first Paris exhibition devoted to Jeanne Lanvin (1867-1946). It features over a hundred models from the amazing collections of the Palais Galliera and Lanvin Heritage. Jeanne Lanvin used travel diaries, swatches of ethnic fabrics and a vast library of art books to feed her curiosity and inspire her to create fabrics, patterns and exclusive colors. Jeanne Lanvin represents artistry in materials, embroidery, topstitches, twists, spirals, cut-outs – all the virtuosity of the couturière’s craft. It is classical French perfection, with late 18th and early 19th century style dresses – slender bust, low waist, ample skirt – contrasting with the tubular line of Art Deco with its black and white geometrical patterns, the profusion of ribbons, crystals, beads, and silk tassels. A capacity for hard work and an intuitive understanding of the modern world only partly explain the extraordinary success of this discreet woman. Alber Elbaz and the Palais Galliera invite you to an encounter with this great lady of haute couture, Jeanne Lanvin. The Exhibition will run from March 8 to August 23, 2015 at Palais Galliera at 10 Avenue Pierre er de Serbie, Paris 16e.
ADVOCACY: Lanvin Supports HIV Positive Women In Lanvin’s non-ceasing effort to support women, make feel them worthy, and beautiful, the design house has paired with Dessine l’Espoir (Designing Hope). This charity supports women affected by HIV and AIDS in southern Africa. Lanvin designed dolls, manufactured by a group of 20 HIV-positive women in Swaziland, using traditional, artisanal skills. This provides income for the women to meet their health needs and support their families. Additionally, profits from the sale of the dolls goes towards school uniforms for disadvantaged children in region of Pigg Peaks. Lanvin chose to design dolls in remembrance of founder, Jeanne Lanvin, who enjoyed designing clothing for them. Each of the doll sports a frock inspired by the Lanvin petite line.
DESIGNER: ALBER ELBAZ Beginning in 2001, Alber Elbaz, transformed the stagnant French couture house of Lanvin into what it is today: a globally sought-after luxury label with rich design inspired by its heritage. Through his role as creative director, the Israeli designer, has looked to the brands roots and Jeanne Lanvin’s legacy as an inspiration for his classically, feminine designs. Elbaz left a trail of fashion imprints across the globe, born in Casablanca, coming of age and studying design in Isreal, and working for a dressmaker for a small shop in NYC, before joining the Lanvin team in Paris. The designer has been praised with a stream of industry awards, including the 2005 CFDA ‘International Designer’ award. At the inaugural World Fashion awards, hosted by WGSN, Elbaz was acknowledged as the ‘ Most Influential Designer’. These awards among many others have established Elbaz’s credibility and success in the fashion industry. Elbaz maintains an intense appreciation for the beauty of women and aims to communicate and enhance this appreciation through his Lanvin designs.
INTERVIEW Alber Elbaz, Creative D irector at Lanvin
1.W h at is the inspiration for Lanvin’s logo and brand imagery ? “The logo is original from Jeanne Lanvin’s time and I’ve kept it as a part of her legacy. I love and respect women. I work mostly with women. And you know, our logo for Lanvin is a mother and a daughter. I’ve always said, “It’s not a lion, and it’s not a horse. It’s a mother and a daughter.” I find the logo very emotional.” 3.D escribe the Lanvin community , both in the design h ou se and with y our consume rs. “When it’s a family and the business is yours, you’ll do anything to maintain it, to make it happen, and it shows. When you love someone, and they love you back, then it shows. In office, we do a lot together to learn and build our family. With our consumers, we do our best to emulate our work environment, so it is very much like a family in that respect too” 5.H ow do y ou want to make p eople feel w hen th ey we ar y our clothes? “I think because I understand women, my fashion is very intimate. I want to give women strength and confidence, and maybe a bit of sex appeal. But not because they are revealing. I think my clothes give strength. Strong and powerful people are sexy.” 7.W h at do y ou have in mind during y ou r design proce ss? “But we do go through a lot of techniques and processes. I don’t like new dresses, and I don’t like vintage either. For me, almost everything we do has to be like a dress that your mother wore and that you are going to wear. This is how we bring the emotion into it.” 9.W h at does Lanvin fash ion bring to the table? “Lanvin is important. We make people dream. We make people think. You have to give them stories. You have to introduce fantasy. Fashion is how we bring them into the world today. That is my job.” 11. Wh o do y ou look up into in the fashion world? “It’s Azzedine. He is true couture. He’s one of my big, all-time favorite favorites. I have so much respect for him. You know what? There was a time when designers really hated each other. They bad-mouthed each other constantly. Today it is an entirely different scenario. Designers send flowers to each other before the shows. There is so much respect for one another.” 13. Wh at is y our favorite thing to design? “Dresses. The lines and shapes and silhouette of a dress tell so much about the designer and the woman wearing the dress. Dresses are also a part of our legacy, since Lanvin’s inception.” 15. Wh at is y our numbe r one ru le in fashion? “Be honest. Sometimes it’s more difficult to talk about fashion than to do fashion. But do you know what I do? I tell the truth. Sometimes the truth makes you laugh, and sometimes it makes you cry.” 17. How do y ou se e the fashion community evolving? “I think that we are in a very strange time today, when everybody is thinking about what is going to happen, and everybody is kind of cleaning house a little bit. In the fashion world, we are doing something similar. We are taking the fake out and being a little bit more real and simple. In fashion, we have a reputation for being such a façade—fake people—but none of the fashion people who I know are fake.”
