THE JEPSON CENTER Opened in 2006, the Jepson Center is a space devoted to contemporary art and rotating exhibitions. Designed by renowned architect, Moshe Safdie, the stark white stone building is home to a permanent collection in honor of the late Savannah native, Metropolitian Museum of Art curator and scholar, Kirk Vanedoe. It features works by some of the most pivotal contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close, and Jasper Johns, as well as pieces by many notable Georgia artists. Home to many art, fashion, and community events throughout the year, the Jepson Center has established itself as a staple in the historic

20

Telfair Square. With it’s enormous, light filled atrium, the building is a sight to behold from inside and out. Constructed from white Portugese stone and featuring glass bridges connecting its various structures, Safdie’s design is strikingly beautiful and modern. With a strong focus on education, the center hopes to teach the young and old alike the value of art and creativity. The building has a studio space, resource center, and auditorium for any educational events or means. The Jepson center features a two-story hands on gallery for children and families called the ArtZeum created to explore the general novices views and assumptions on art.

Making the Most of Your Money Making money is hard but spending it is easy. We want to help you get the biggest bang for your buck with these 10 helpful tips on how to spend your cash in all the right ways.

38

Pack a lunch Stop letting the lunch bills pile up, start adding salad and sandwich supplies to your grocery list for an easy toss together lunch. Pair with finger foods like apples and carrots and you have a great lunch for on the go. Take your coffee from home Coffee shops can get expensive. Make your coffee at home and take it in a to go mug for easy travel. This way you can save money and not have to sacrifice your morning cup of Joe. Embrace the sale rack If you must go shopping, only shop the sale rack. Most stores keep their sale section in the back, so keep walking past that full price merchandise and find yourself a great deal amongst all the markdowns. Thrift stores! Don’t be scared by the thought of second hand clothes. You can find great pieces at your local thrift store for less than half the cost. Take your time looking through the racks, the best finds are always hidden. Become a coupon cutter Coupons can save you big when you shop. You can find coupons for pretty much anything online, from food, clothes, even movie tickets. You could even try checking out your newspaper for cutout coupons. Trust me, a little goes a long way when it comes to saving money. Reusable water bottles are your friend No need to keep buying plastic water bottles when you can just refill the same one again and again. It’s smart to stay hydrated throughout the day so do it in an earth friendly way that can also save you some cash. Grocery shop with a list It’s easy to want to buy all the delicious looking snacks when you grocery shop, especially when you’re hungry. Eat a snack and make a list at home of all the food you need for the week before you hit up the store. That way you don’t spend money on food you don’t need. Check out free events happening around you You don’t always have to spend money to have fun. There is always plenty of free events happening around you that you might not know about. Take some time to ask around and search the internet to find the next fun outing for you and your friends. Find a roommate Living alone can get pricey. Having another person split the rent and utilities cost with you is a great and easy way to cut your bill in half. Create a budget As boring as it sounds, you have to learn to budget. Map out all of your fixed expenses like rent, utilities, and food, then see how much left over cash you have for clothes and other fun stuff (but really just for clothes). 39

THE ALL-AMERICAN MENU Americans may not be the healthiest connoisseurs on the planet, but we certainly do enjoy our blood pressure raising delicacies. Serve these menu items at any outdoor warm weather event and they’re sure to be a crowd pleaser.

SERVES 6

HOMEMADE BLACK PEPPER POTATO CHIPS These crispy, lightly salted potato chips are the perfect snack for your downtown travels.

6 yukon gold potatoes, unpeeled canola or vegetable oil, for frying kosher salt and black pepper

HOMEMADE BLACK PEPPER POTATO CHIPS Wash and clean the potatoes in cold running water. Using a mandoline, or vegetable peeler, finely slice the potatoes into chips. Drop the chips into a bowl of ice water as you work to prevent them from going brown. This will also remove any excess starch. In a heavy Dutch oven, heat oil to 400 degrees F(use a thermometer to keep the temp right!). When it’s hot enough, lay the potatoes on baking sheet lined with paper towels, and blot them with more paper towels to dry. Lower batches of potatoes into the oil using a spatula. They will fry very quickly; stir with a heavy metal spoon as they fry to get them to be the “kettle” style. Remove with a slotted spoon when they’re nice and golden and crisp, about 5 minutes. Immediately sprinkle on salt and lots of black pepper. Repeat with the rest of the potatoes! Serve very soon after frying.

45

SERVES 8

APPLE CINNAMON PIE WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM Loaded with savory mushrooms and heavenly provolone cheese, this burger will satisfy every one of your hunger needs.

1 1/2 pounds Red Delicious apples, 1/4-inch-thick slices 1 1/2 pounds Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 cup all purpose flour 3 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt Basic Pie Crust 1/4 cup honey 1 tablespoon milk Vanilla ice cream

APPLE CINNAMON PIE WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM Position rack in bottom third of oven and preheat oven to 400° F. Combine sliced apples, 1/4 cup sugar, flour, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, vinegar and salt in large bowl; toss to blend. Roll out 1 dough disk on lightly floured surface to 13-inch round. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter deep-dish glass pie dish. Trim overhang to 1/2 inch. Brush edge of crust lightly with water. Transfer apple mixture to crust, mounding in center and pressing lightly to compact. Drizzle with honey. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Roll out second dough disk to 13inch round. Place atop apples. Trim dough overhang to 1 inch. Fold top crust edge under bottom crust edge, pressing to seal. Crimp edge decoratively. Cut several slits in crust to allow steam to escape. Place apple pie on baking sheet. Bake 45 minutes. Combine remaining 1 tablespoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon in small bowl. Brush top crust of pie with milk. Sprinkle with sugar mixture. Bake until crust is golden brown, apples are tender and juices bubble thickly, covering crust edges with foil if browning too quickly, about 20 minutes. Transfer pie to rack and cool. Cut pie into wedges and serve with vanilla ice cream.

The Common Commute Biking is on the rise in this young and thriving city, but there’s a few things you may want to know. If you’re looking for a convenient way to navigate this town, here’s the way to do it.

48

“There’s nothing like a late night bike ride when the streets are empty and the only lights are the moon and street lamps to clear your head and relieve you from the stresses of life.”

Boasting warm weather and flat roads, Savannah is home to a growing number of residents ditching their cars for bikes. People looking for more freedom and outdoor activity are seeing the appeal and making it happen. Why wait for an Uber, taxi, or a friend to drive you when you can just hop on your bike and under your own power transport yourself to your destination for free? The beauty of biking is how diverse of a mode of transportation it is. It becomes a natural part of your life that helps improve your health, sanity, and finances. There’s nothing like a late night bike ride when the streets are empty and the only lights are the moon and street lamps to clear your head and relieve you from the stresses of life. And

not having to fill a car up with gas or pay for a ride is beneficial to everyone’s wallets as well. Just because you’re biking everywhere doesn’t mean your fashion has to suffer and you have to wear tights and bike shoes. Nearly all bikers in Savannah wear what they would during their day to day. Most people find that a simple pair of sneakers for guys along with jeans or a slim fitting pair of pants and a t-shirt or button-down works best for biking around town and looking good while doing it. Ladies can wear pants or a skirt along with any light top to combat the heat in Savannah and feel good. Biking is a good way to get out and experience the city and it’s quirks as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle for yourself.

Surviving the Retrograde Mercury retrograde is just one of those things we can’t avoid, but it can also be the perfect time to really examine your life. The imbalance could really push you to try and think everything out as much as you can in a positive. With some careful evaluation, retrograde might actually work out in your favor someway or another.

64

You may or may not know that the planet Mercury somehow rules over our actions more than any other planet. You may or may not also know that sometimes Mercury falls out of balance, really affecting us on Earth. You also might just think this is completely unrealistic and has no effect on you at all. However, even the biggest astrology skeptics realize that yes, Mercury screws us over every few months. But how exactly does all this happen? Many believe that retrograde is when Mercury begins to spin backwards. But, as interesting as that sounds, it is incredibly false. The planet Mercury is closest to the sun, making its orbit short. This causes it to go past Earth about three or four times a year. In these passing’s is when we experience the retrograde, where everything becomes unhinged. During these few weeks of Mercury passing, you realize how much it actually controls in your life. The planet connects with your communication skills, knowledge intake, and even how technology functions. You would think that if this controlling planet was closer to us then it would improve these things, but really the planet shuts down. In astrology, it is believed that the planet sleeps while passing the Earth, meaning it gives up control. This loss of control is when everyone and everything begins to act out of character. Emotions become super intense, technology begins to really fret, and everyone’s attitude is on another level. With all of these out-of-nowhere changes, there are some important things to know. For starters, absolutely do not make any important decision; no financial decisions, business decisions, nothing. It will be almost impossible to make a level headed choice, and even the people you answer to will not be able to give you the best suggestions or even a response at all. If you have to make a big decision, absolutely read the fine print! This also affects the workplace; getting work done will seem almost impossible, and forget working in partnerships, because you will get nowhere. Don’t bother trying to tie-up any loose ends, as you will just frustrate yourself and everyone else in the process. Secondly, do not have any serious procedures done to you unless absolutely necessary. Think of it as your surgeon is in the same mindset as you, so it probably wont be too beneficial on your behalf. Same goes with making any big travel arrangements; if you’re flying, keep in mind what your pilot might be experiencing as well. Planes are more likely to experience technical issues during this time, and most of all a ton of delays and missing baggage. With technical problems in full swing, do not rely on your phone when booking travels or even just the basics like connecting to wi-fi or sending a text message. Obviously this doesn’t mean that your phone won’t function at all, but do make sure everything is backed up because it might fail on you. Lastly, do not take anything to heart during retrograde. Everyone is pretty lost in their feelings, causing random changes in moods. Even the most outgoing people will want to take refuge in their homes alone, becoming annoyed with daily conversing. People will say a lot of things that they don’t mean, so a lot of relationships will be tested. Just remember that you should not jump to any quick conclusions, because nine times out of ten it’ll all be worked out.

LOOK 1: END OF THE WEEK CELEBRATION It’s the last day of the work week which means casual is in. A basic white tee is clean and simple, but pair it with a nice black pant and chic sandals and now you have a great casual work look. You’ve made it to the end of the week, congratulations! Now its time to celebrate. This is the perfect night to go out and party to your hearts desire; keep the pants but ditch the white tee and swap it for a body clinging crop top instead. Complete your look with a cute pair of heels. Now go out and dance the night away! LOOK 2: MID-WEEK BLUES Yes, your workload may be heavy, yes your butt probably hurts from sitting in that uncomfortable office chair for hours on end, but there’s good news! The weekend is almost here! Let loose and try a slightly more modern look with a jump suit rather than that boring pants suit. Just add a sleek black blazer and a pair of heels and you will be conquering the rest of your work with confidence. When you’re all done at work put away the blazer and swapt out those heels for some comfy sandals. The jump suit keeps it casual while the sandals relieve your feet from their heeled prison. This is a great look for catching up with the girls while enjoying a nice cocktail on your girl’s night out. Cruelty Free Chic Animal testing plays a major, ugly part in the beauty industry. There are so many popular beauty brands that we use today that still test on animals. What makes this even more disappointing is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not even require animal testing for cosmetics. However, there are many brands producing products that are vegan and cruelty free. This

means that these products are made naturally, without the use of animals in any part of the process. Vegan excludes the use of lanolin, collagen, cholesterol, gelatin, and many more chemicals that are bad for your skin. With all of the positives of vegan and cruelty free makeup, there are still misconceptions Many believe that the product comes at a much higher price with low quality.

70

ELF: professional complete set of 12 brushes, bb cream spf 20, aqua beauty primer mist Makeup Geek: eyeshadow pan in “Tuscan sun” & “Taboo” BH Cosmetics: studio pro contour palette, party girl waterproof gel eyeliner NYX: hd photogenic concealer wand, illuminator, the skinny mascara

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”

Here are some reasons why you should choose cruelty free: Like stated before, animal cruelty is such a sad process. Ingredients are tested on bunnies, hamsters, and dogs, where they are trapped in an uncomfortable and unsafe environment. They get shaved (where majority of the tail fur is used for makeup brushes), chemically bathed, and then have dangerous products put on their skin. They are not sedated or even remotely protected, and in fact are strapped down. They take in fumes and face severe reactions to the products, giving these animals a short life span. The process is not even worth it when over half the time the products still provide terrible side effects on us customers. Furthering into side effects, the chemicals used to produce beauty products are so incredibly harsh on skin. Lanolin (fat derived from the grease on sheep), collagen (dead animal protein), and guanine (fish scales) are just a few of the many chemicals used. Several of the ways these chemicals are extracted are disturbing and disgusting, and are linked to many terrible illnesses, such as immunodeficiency’s and cancers. There are so many alternatives! With the constant advancement of technology, the

uses of animal testing are completely avoidable. Scientists have managed to replicate human cells and tissues, making the testing more accurate since it is on replicated human skin, and not that of an animal. Honestly, companies are just being stubborn to change and stuck in their old ways. Vegan, cruelty-free makeup can actually benefit your skin in the long run! With ingredients such as olive oil and zinc, skin will be soothed and moisturized without a chemical residue that leads to even dryer skin. You will not be harmed if the makeup happens to fall in your eyes, and the chances of it breaking out your skin are really low. With these positive skin attributes, your makeup will actually appear even more flawless. Despite all of the misconceptions, vegan/crueltyfree makeup embodies many positive features! Don’t think that just because they use safer practices makes them more exclusive; in fact, there are many brands that are very affordable and achieve an even higher quality than most popular beauty brands. So the next time you run out of your favorite lipstick or mascara, consider giving the humane options a try.

THE AMERICAN COMFORT Every country has their own fashion staple; Japan has kimonos, India has saris, and Spain has its’ flamenco dresses. These pieces connect a whole body of people, no matter what their personal style is, and in America, that piece is the denim jean. It seems pretty plain in comparison to others, but denim has been through many major transformations in America, making it rich in heritage. As an accidental discovery in Nimes, France, Serge de Nimes was created to replicate a sturdy fabric named ‘serge.’ However, us Americans with all of our pride believe that denim began with Levi Strauss. During the gold rush, men needed pants that would withstand all temperatures and terrain because regular fabric wouldn’t get the job done. Levi brought over material, and with a few rivets and some indigo, the denim jean was born. This denim was worn by any person that had a labor-intensive job, making the denim jean a practical feature of that time. Eventually, the wear and versatility of denim jeans spread into other categories, like being used for horseback riding and features in films. It was an industry dream piece, perfect to film a popular western cowboy in, symbolizing that he is a tough guy. These movies and depictions of denim jeans caught the attention of the North, where people traveled down south just to bring a pair of jeans back with them. The more exposed the denim jean became, the more it was commercialized within American culture. More and more influential celebrities wore classic worn denims in their films, styling them to fit a character. They began to represent a sort of freedom and rebellion since they were never really used for fashion purposes. Even Marilyn Monroe began to rock the jeans, showing that women can dress casual with the man as well. Since denim jeans are not really gender specific, throwing in personal style started becoming of importance. The bottoms truly became a fashion piece with the use of more washes and styles being created. Designers began to label their unique creations, and produced styles like patchwork and acid wash jeans. The demand for jeans that possessed individuality sky rocketed, and so did the price. Now jeans can be seen as a super casual piece, something comforting, or even within high fashion. No, jeans are not bright and flashy, but they hold a special, genuine quality that connects all social classes of this country. Denim jeans have always been all-American, and always will be.
