EMBRACE YOUR INNER
DIVA DORK
As I was describing GETTE, recently, to a friend who had not yet read it, I was asked, “So, how is GETTE different from other technolgy magazines?”
This got me thinking about the insufficient information out there about women in technology. The conventional wisdom has always been that females are not as smart as the men in silicon valley. As a result, tech companies have been reluctant to hire seriously smart and powerful women, and have failed to promote them when they should have. Thus, the burden and potential reward for women who make it to the top of the tech food chain should be admired and acknowledged. These determined individuals who dip heavily into their own
personal resources, financial and otherwise, to bring forth their ideas and work to the attention of major tech audiences deserve to be recognized for their acheivements! The seed of a new female voice wants to articulate itself, and make itself heard in spite of all those who try to stop it. Its is a voice which has a genuine chance to evolve and improve itself on the basis of hearing and being heard. It is GETTE’s purpose to respond to this need.

HAPPENINGS NEW DESIGN, EVENTS, AND HOT SPOTS IN WORLD OF TECH
MINI KOMA
LIGHT AS A FEATHER Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the newest addition to the company’s family of products: the iPad 5, now called the iPad Air. Also announced was the iPad Mini with Retina Display. Apple has a very clear direction and a very clear goal, or so says Cook. And, that is making the products it is known for bigger, better, faster, and (fortunately) cheaper. The new iPad Air doesn’t offer any crazy new hardware features — a better processor, sure — but the standout feature for reviewers and consumers is its more manageable size. Apple made the new iPad 20% thinner and 28% lighter than its predecessor. That’s enough to sell it, apparently. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that the 10-inch tablet market was done for, with all interest and excitement shifting to smaller, but equally capable 7 or 8-inch tablets instead. A significant re-imagining of the original 9.7-inch iPad, the Air breathes
new life into the platform. Much like the rMBP, the iPad Air borrows a lot of the learnings from its more popular ultraportable counterpart. I don’t know that it will curb enthusiasm over the iPad mini, particularly now that the new mini shares the same hardware platform (including display), but it levels the playing field between the two models. Trying to summarize what makes the iPad Air special quickly turns into a list of the things Apple likes to have with any evolution of an existing product: it’s smaller, lighter and faster with absolutely no tradeoffs made in the process. The iPad Air feels like a true successor to the iPad 2.

NIKKI DURKIN FOUNDER OF NEW STARTUP 99DRESSES TELLS US ABOUT HER INSPIRATION BEHIND “THE INFINITE CLOSET” CLAIRE MILLER
T
he founder of 99Dresses, Nikki Durkin says, “I’m a twenty-year-old girl, I don’t have a lot of money but I like to look nice. And if I have this problem and all my friends have this problem, then let’s just create this Infinite Closet.” Durkin realized that the technology existed to solve her dilemma and built clothing swap community 99dresses in her native Australia. The Infinite Closet idea caught on through word of mouth and the site saw over 4k dresses uploaded over four months. Durkin decided to shut down the Australian site and give the US market a go— So she applied to Y Combinator, and got accepted. To participate on 99dresses, users upload a dress that they may be tired of, but that somebody else might appreciate. Unlike other clothing swap services Poshmark and Threadflip, 99dresses GETTE NEWS NOVEMBER 2013
is aiming for the Forever 21 and Zara set, not necessarily the well-heeled worshippers of Lanvin, Balenciaga and Prada. Also unlike its competitors, 99dresses doesn’t use any actual currency, so women who upload dresses must sell them for “buttons.” In turn they can use these buttons to buy other dresses (sortable by size), and can also buy extra buttons for a dollar each if they’re short of a needed amount. The company currently monetizes by selling these buttons. An item never actually leaves the Infinite Closet, and simply is taken out of circulation when you “buy” it. Ostensibly you could buy a dress, wear it once to a party, and re-upload it for someone else to enjoy (The seller pays for shipping and handling). “It’s guilt-free shopping,” says Durkin, “prolonging that rush of never having to wear the same thing twice.” While the service is limited to dresses at the moment, Durkin tells me that she plans on rolling out other categories of clothing in the next one to two months. Durkin also is currently talking with colleges around the US, and hopes that individual campuses will adopt the 99dresses platform for themselves. No plans to include men are in the works, because men “consume fashion differently than women.” The site currently has an inventory of over 500 dresses and Durkin is focused on building up that inventory.

CRYPSTAGRAM
ENCRYPT YOUR MESSAGES & CREATE GLITCH ART ALL AT ONCE We live in a world where over-sharing is not just common, it’s encouraged. We happily, and readily, upload our photos and thoughts to the internet, where total strangers can access them with the click of a button. But as our data becomes more valuable to the companies who access it, and we realize just how prying the eyes of our government really are, posting a photo to Instagram feels decidedly less innocuous than it used to.
cold turkey isn’t an option for most of us, mostly because we like social media, but there are ways to be smarter about what we upload and how we upload it. A clever new project from The Barbarian Group might help ease you into the practice of protecting your data. The creative agency created Cryptstagram, an online tool that allows users to upload images and encrypt them with secret messages that only the intended recipients can see. You can apply glitch art Problem is, it’s not easy to change our filters to your photos and get the same artsy habits, and sharing details about our lives via effect you’d find on Instagram, only instead social media platforms certainly qualifies as of enhancing a photo, these filters are one. BEYOND YOUR
DREAMS
NOW, AN APP FOR REMEMBERING YOUR DREAMS Have you ever had a life-altering, spectacular dream and within minutes of waking up could no longer remember the moments that made up your vision? Well now, there’s an app for that. SHADOW, a New-York based startup building the world’s largest dream database, and is now offering it’s iOS app to help users record and remember their dreams. SHADOW is an innovative alarm clock that helps users remember and record their dreams by placing them in a cloud-based, global dream repository. SHADOW visualizes your sleep and dream patterns to identify common themes and, by using dream content of other users, turns these symbols and experiences into insights. SHADOW is an alarm clock, but with a stunning design and advanced features. Simply tell
SHADOW when you go to bed and the time you wish to wake up, and come morning it will use a series of escalating alarms. The gradual increase in volume not only makes the waking up process easier, but helps you better remember your dreams by taking you through your hypnopompic state. Once you’re awake, SHADOW immediately prompts you to record your dreams, you can speak or text your dream into the app and if you do audio it’ll transcribe to text and pull out the key words. $8 FROM THE ITUNES APP STORE ON IPHONE OR IPAD -JENNA GANTY

ADDICTED: ‘I’M THINKING ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME,’ SAYS MOTHER-OF-ONE STEPH OF CANDY CRUSH READ MORE: WWW.GETTEMAG.COM
WE’RE ADDICTED TO CANDY CRUSH Ladies, it’s time for an intervention. Do you find yourself having “a sneaky game or two at lunchtime” like Lucy Berkley? Has your “housework gone to pot” like Jenni Weaver, because you’re spending upwards of 12 hours aligning similar sweets for the joy of watching them explode? If you’re nodding and whispering quiet affirmatives to yourself, you should know you’re not alone. According to AppData, over 700 million games of Candy Crush Saga are played each day with a high percentage being played by women. “Candy Crush is one of those gender-neutral games that has a ‘moreish’ quality that can fit in flexibly around a woman’s life,” Professor Mark Griffiths, director of the International Gaming Research
Unit at Nottingham Trent University told the Daily Mail. Its deceptively simple and coy ways of looping you in with random prizes and the whole no-oneloses mentality keeps people coming back for more. It’s here that the game makes its money. Think Gaming estimates that King.com makes over $850,000 a day off Candy Crush. With level boosters costing as little as $1.50, women are unknowingly throwing away tons of money trying to level up. “I’ve probably spent around $240 playing it,” Berkley says. “But it’s worth it.” If you or a loved one are showing signs of Candy Crush addiction, perhaps it’s time you sat them down and addressed the situation. A
KEEP IN SHAPE THE FUN WAY THE DANCE CRAZE THAT SWEPT THE NATION IS BACK—BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE ON A TABLET NEAR YOU. CLAIRE MILLER
M
ajesco Entertainment teamed up with global lifestyle brand Zumba to develop the ideal solution to maintaining a healthy routine while on the go: Zumba Dance, the first fitness game for iPad, Android and Amazon. I remember trying out a Zumba class or two, as much as I loved them, my schedule didn’t love that anxious rush to the gym in order to claim my spot in Zumba class on time. As a matter of fact, I knew a few people that became certified Zumba instructors, just so they could teach the class during timeframes that worked best for them. Ultimately many people fall off the fitness wagon because of lack of time or schedule conflicts, and that’s where Zumba Dance comes into play. Making it’s way from fitness clubs, the easy to set up app brings the high-intensity dance class to your office or home in seconds. Using your iPad’s front-facing camera, Zumba Dance implements motion-tracking
technology by tracking your moves as you follow along and dance through six various songs. (Just note, you’ll need ample space to ensure that the game can see you and monitor your movements.) Since Zumba Dance is identical to the live classes and console video games, many of the routines are anchored in repetitive steps and easy to grasp ahold of after a little practice – just know that you’re using a tablet camera and you might not get credit for correct performance 100% of the time — but hey, if you’re doing Zumba in your bedroom – I wouldn’t expect you to hit each step dead on anyways. That’s where the practice comes in. Zumba Dance gives you the options to practice moves, track your daily progress, or set up a fitness plan that will push you to burn a set number of calories each day. The game also offers longer class sessions so you can create your own personalized, rigorous workouts however (and whenever) you please. The initial app price is $4.99 and starts you out with a decent variety of six songs and multiple class length options, however after awhile, if you begin to get bored with your workout you may want to consider unlocking all of the Zumba Dance greatness with the in-app purchase of $24.99 for 3-hours of routines and 43 dance tracks.
Screenshot from the new zumba app for iPads and tablets. The app uses the built-in camera from your tablet to record your movements & give you a personalized workout experience. Play to unlock new levels and workous.

lthough I love my fancy Garmin watch, most runners don’t need $400 worth of tech on their wrist. That’s why the Nike+ iPod system is so brilliant: cheap, stupid-simple and gives you the basic info—time, pace, distance—automatically uploaded to Nike’s training site. Now, Nike’s finally released the long-rumored Sportband, which opens the Nike+ world to the handful of people out there who don’t run with iPods. With it, Nike proves they can do sleek and simple products even without Steve Jobs’s help. My first impression upon strapping on the hard-rubber black and bright pink band is that it’s more comfortable than I was expecting: I barely noticed I was wearing it. It’s also nearly as simple as its iPod-based cousin. The one caveat: You have to download a program for your computer before it will recognize the pull-out USB key that stores your runs. I had to discover that in the instructions, which I prefer not to have to

read. (Although, to be fair, the Sportband’s instructions are just images, so I still didn’t have to “read.” Touché.) On the run, one button starts and stops, the other switches among pace, distance and time. The display is easy to read, the uploading was automatic and it let me tie this sensor into my existing Nike+ account with no muss. The $59 price seemed steep, until I realized it’s still nearly $100 cheaper than the cheapest iPod with a Nike+ kit. Attention Nike: add a $25 heart-rate monitor accessory, and you’ll have my loyalty for life.

MAGICAL TOWELS WHOEVER THOUGHT THE BEACH TOWEL NEEDED A DESIGN REVAMP? VERTTY, A NEW, ECO-FRIENDLY TOWEL IS JUST THAT. JOLENE HARRIS
CREATORS: FREDERICO CARDOSO APP NAME: VERTTY TOWEL PRICE: $89.90
A
s temperatures drop, who isn’t daydreaming about nipping off to warmer, southern lands, where the sun is always out and the beach is always in? I’ll tell you who, sand haters-or more accurately, eremikophobiacs-everywhere. Sand, as the afflicted will all know, can be an unrelenting and savvy pest, especially when you have only a thick, wet towel to combat it. Well, no longer. The Vertty beach towel sheds water and sand to improve your beach experience that much more.
The towel, is made of sustainable and synthetic materials that work to wick water away from the cloth fibers. If that’s not enough, it also looks good. The idea for the design came to Vertty designer and Creative Director, Frederico Cardoso while surfing. While surfing he began to notice commonalities among beachgoers. He shared his thoughts with Cruz, who ran with the idea. “I started thinking what basic items everyone carries to the beach,” he tells Co.Design. He realized beach towels were depressingly generic.
“Vertty reinvents the beach towel,” he says. The most noticeable improvement is Vertty’s innovative fabric, called Ketten, that forms the core of the towel and prevents it from getting too wet. The textile is responsible for lightening the weight of the cloth by 30%; and the towel can also dry in no time. The towel’s dimensions were expanded, with the triangular motif making it easier to fold and store. A “discrete” waterproof pocket is integrated into the folds where you can store car keys and your wallet.

REDESIGNING 5C CASECOLLAGE TURNS THE CONNECT FOUR PORTHOLES IN YOUR IPHONE 5C CASE INTO TINY PICTURE FRAMES. CHRISTOPHER BARKER lthough more perverse minds might disagree, the consensus these days seems to be that the case Apple made to go along with the colorful plastic iPhone 5c is one of the company’s rare design missteps. Why? For one, it looks weird, like someone showing up to a date wearing only a clothes hamper. For another, it’s gross: those holes are essentially a pointless series of collection cells in which dirt, grime and detritus can collect. And finally, as we made a big stink about recently, it actually partially obscures the word “iPhone” on the back to read ‘Non’ instead, which, we quipped, “is exactly what some token Frenchman working within Apple should have said when he saw this thing actually pulled onto an iPhone 5C for the first time.”
A
But at least something good is coming out of this strange design fart. Inspired by our own post calling the iPhone 5c case “pure trash,” Nashville-based mobile app developers Lunar Lincoln have released their first app, CaseCollage, which allows you to treat each and every one of the iPhone 5c case’s plastic portholes as a miniature picture frame. Here’s how it works. Downloading the free CaseCollage app off of the App Store, you’re asked to identify the color of your iPhone 5c case, and then presented with a virtual view of your iPhone case’s Connect Four style grid of unnecessary port openings. You can drag images from your photo library, Flickr, Picasa, Facebook or Instagram into each of these holes, or fill them up with solid colors, unique patterns, or even letters. When you’re
done, you can print out your CaseCollage and then slide it in-between your iPhone and its case. There’s also an option to share your CaseCollages with friends. Using a CaseCollage also protects the exposed dimples of your iPhone 5c case from grease and grime, meaning you won’t be confronted with a rash diseased chickenpox the first time you take your case off. But cases are just as much about personalizing your phone as they are about protecting it, and CaseCollage embraces this, giving you more options to make your iPhone 5c uniquely “yours.”

APPLE NEWS 1. iOS 7 Security Bug
Apparently iOS 7 has a security bug that allows you to bypass the lock-screen on the iPhone 5 and earlier devices. Swipe up to access the phone’s control center, and you can get right into the user’s texts, photos, and social media. Pretty scary if you lose your phone. (Or just put it down around snoops.)

Many users have complained about battery drain, which can be a concern with any mobile device. Turn off App Refresh in Settings (under General).
3. Non-Apple Charger Warnings
iOS 7 generates a warning message when non-Apple chargers are plugged in which is something we’ve seen before, even though the charger worked just fine. The question is, is the warning accurate or made to sell more Apple chargers? Hard to say.
4. Mailbox Overload!
Gmail and Apple Mailbox users have reported that upgrading caused their inbox to reset, displaying thousands of “unread” messages. Panic! The fix is simple: Just restart your phone.

There’s a lot of movement in iOS 7; swiping has replaced X-ing out in many cases, such as deleting texts and force-closing apps. GETTE INVESTIGATES THE STRUGGLE FOR WOMEN TO BREAK INTO A MALE DOMINATED FIELD
BREAKING IN & STAYING IN JENNY LITT
t my one-year business school reunion back in May, I pitched at the startup showcase. Of the 20 pitches, 3 were women founders. This is not a new situation. At entrepreneur events, I’m frequently one of a handful of women. Our first incubator was 85% male (I counted one day while on a Red Bull break). Again and again, these numbers make me think: where are all the women?
A
A recent piece cited the number of technology companies founded by women at 3%. This is despite the fact that women-led private technology companies get 35% higher return on investment, that the venture-backed ones have 12% higher revenue, and that the growth in number of women-owned companies with $10M+ surpasses the overall growth in number of these companies. I asked other (male and female, seasoned and new) entrepreneurs for potential explanations. Here’s the three general buckets of potential explanations. Differences in women’s abilities and / or natural inclinations. Entrepreneurship interferes, even more so than the average career, with work-life balance. “Dismissive attitudes” towards women. tions. People often say women are less risk-taking or confident in themselves. I’m not sure if this is true. However, one thing is clear: many attributes of successful entrepreneurs are not considered feminine. A recent Inc. article on leadership found that decisiveness, confidence and resilience are the most desirable qualities in a leader. Yet they are all viewed as male traits. The same article says that stereotypically female traits – empathy, vulnerability, inclusiveness, generosity, balance, humility and patience – are what make great leaders today. Yet having just gone through the fundraising process, I don’t think that humility and vulnerability are going to help you raise venture money.

And finally regarding the dismissive attitudes…. An admired advisor of mine told me once that as an attractive woman, it would be easy to get investor meetings. No doubt he meant it only to be helpful and I didn’t take it badly but, it was, sexist. And this is a man who he is truly dedicated to helping me and other entrepreneurs. neuroscience – is pretty darn big. But the response we frequently got was “awww… what a cute idea by those two science girls”. A business plan competition judge told us we were a “social project” despite being the only company in the room with revenue and clients! Potential investors told us we were a consulting firm with no product despite us offering no consulting services and having the product readily available on our site. Did we get these reactions because we were women? I don’t know. It could be. If so, did we get these reactions because other women before us failed to dream up big companies, or because people can underestimate women even when they do have big ideas? I would argue the latter. In any event, this episode ends well. Julie and I just signed a term sheet with a top VC firm that got the big idea. We are now one step closer to becoming part of the 3%. All I would say to any person, male or female, is that launching a company / fundraising is exhausting, and whatever sex your are, naysayers will far outnumber your backers. As a somewhat overly-emotional female, I was lucky that Julie let me cry without judging me (after the umpteenth round of rejection) and that for me, crying is usually followed by renewed determination. That, and running is super therapeutic…

GETTE INVESTIGATES THE ART OF LASER TATTOO REMOVAL AND HOW IT WORKS
2
CALLIE GAMIES These days, the right tattoo has emerged as a brilliant extension of signature style—see Miki Zanini’s ivy-etched earlobe or Pamela Love’s irrefutably cool tribal markings. Still, lately we’re beginning to wonder: What if you’re not so lucky? What if, like an ill-fated seasonal impulse buy, you realize you’ve made a mistake? Such was the case for GETTE’s Associate Accessories Editor Jorden Bickham, who spontaneously ducked into a tattoo parlor nine years ago. “I was seventeen. I was young and dumb,” she says, sweeping her blonde hair off her neck to reveal a faded infinity symbol tattoo hidden at the nape. “It’s just not me,” she says ruefully. So, with her December nuptials approaching, she made a beeline to the office of New York City dermatologist Lisa Airan, M.D. “The wedding seemed like the perfect [excuse] to get it removed,” says Bickham, who hopes to wear a loose chignon with her off-the-shoulder custom Alexander McQueen dress for her walk down the aisle. Currently in her fourth treatment with Airan’s Medlite laser—a Q-switch beam that fragments the tattoo’s pigment so the body can sweep it away— she’s already watched it fade from a double-ended black loop to a faded gray swirl. With approximately three more sessions to go, the process will
ultimately be worth it, but, she adds, it’s “long, painful, and expensive.” A recent study published in the American Academy of Dermatology may offer fresh hope for the future—a new in-office protocol that combines multiple single laser treatments into an extended session known as the R20 method. While traditional tattoo removal requires a series of seven to 20 individual laser treatments spaced up to two months apart, the “R20 [study] recommends four Q-switch laser treatments, administered 30 minutes apart, which are meant to be performed in a single office visit,” says New York City dermatologist Mitchell Chasin, M.D. Once the full cycle is complete, patients sit for a fifth and final treatment before walking out the door—this time with a different laser to “resurface the skin, aid in the clearance of more ink, and improve the texture of the skin,” says Chasin, who has seen “up to a 60 percent improvement” from a single R20 session. Fortunately, temporary camouflage is always an option—particularly when the lines of a beloved tattoo and, say, a strategically spliced Pucci evening dress don’t match up. For quick coverage, brands like M.A.C.offer highly pigmented, transfer-resistant concealers. GETTE’S favorite vanishing act arrives courtesy of Dermablend’s miraculous three-step regimen. It just works.

MRS. OF THE MOMENT

YAHOO’S MARISSA MAYER IS A DETERMINED AND POWERFUL WOMAN WHO FUELED A NATIONAL DEBATE ABOUT OFFICE LIFE, MOTHERHOOD, AND WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE CEO OF THE MOMENT. JACOB WEISBURG

ew things may strike you while listening to Marissa Mayer deliver this riff, prompted by a question about howher life has changed since her son, Macallister, was born last fall. The first is that she’s not kidding about being a geek. Mayer talks about numbers as if they were people, refers casually to x- and y-axes, and drops terms like stochastic factor (it means a random distribution) in conversation. On business issues, she speaks awkwardly, piling as many likes into a sentence as Alicia Silverstone in Clueless. But when she gets on to technology, she turns effortlessly articulate. The next is that she is an unusually stylish geek. The day we had that conversation in her white, glossy, minimally appointed office in Sunnyvale, California, she was wearing a red Michael Kors dress with a gold belt and a brown Oscar de la Renta cardigan. This cashmere bolero is her work uniform—she has the same one in ivory, navy, black, hot pink, teal, red, and royal blue, and adds new colors every season. She was hoarse from a cold she picked up flying to New York and back, and it was eight-thirty G E T T E F E AT U R E S N O V E M B E R 2 0 1 3
in the evening, with hours’ more work ahead. But she burbled with excitement as she talked about her job. “I’m having the time of my life,” she told me. It might also strike you that the paradox of being both glamorous and a geek explains Mayer’s rapid progress in reviving what only a year ago looked like a moribund giant. Before her arrival in July of last year, Yahoo was being written off by the tech industry, investors, even its own staff. A series of failed CEOs—non-techies from Hollywood, advertising, and finance—had gotten little purchase on the fading technology brand. It was far from clear that a six-months-pregnant, 37-year-old Google engineer and firsttime CEO could remove the air of irony that had attached itself to Yahoo’s purple exclamation point. year later, the punctuation no longer looks so absurd. Adam Cahan, Yahoo’s head of mobile and another exGoogler, told me, “Yahoo has released more products in the last six months than probably in the last five years.” But it is the products themselves that represent what he describes as “a dramatic
cultural shift.” These include a gorgeous new weather app for mobile phones, a relaunch of the photo-sharing site Flickr, and an update of Yahoo Mail, all of which are drawing the first positive reviews the company has seen in ages. By acquiring Tumblr, the hippest of the social-media sites, Mayer solved the problem of Yahoo’s aging demographics and lack of cool with a single billiondollar stroke. If Yahoo’s bottom-line growth is still modest, investors are optimistic: The stock price is up almost 60 percent since Mayer joined. But the most important aspect of the transformation she’s leading may be the least tangible. Yahoo, a brand of early adopters before it became one for tech codgers, is returning to its role as a company that matters in Silicon Valley—able to compete for top engineering talent and acquire start-up companies without smothering them. “She is really talented. She is really aggressive,” says Henry Blodget, whose Business Insider site is a partner with Yahoo Finance. “She is extremely driven, and that inspires people. Developers are excited about working for a

leader like her, someone who says, ‘I’m in; who’s with me?’ And they’re excited about working for an underdog.” It’s a midsummer evening in Mayer’s backyard in Palo Alto. A green lawn large enough to accommodate a skating rink for holiday parties is framed by an irregularly shaped flower border and shaded by a spectacular live oak tree. To one side stands a work of sculpture: a three-foot-tall bronze frog. From the house comes a tinkle of Mozart, playing on a computer-driven baby-grand piano. Mayer is hosting a cocktail party for entrepreneurs invited to Silicon Valley by the World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers program. The guests are already sipping strawberry margaritas when she makes her entrance with a sleepy nine-month-old baby over her shoulder. As Macallister, who has inherited his mother’s pale-blue eyes and flaxen hair, yawns and nuzzles her neck, Mayer calls him an “easy baby.” At the end of a week of late-night preparations for a board-of-directors meeting and an annual shareholders’ meeting, the 38-year-old Mayer might be the one ready to be tucked into bed. 33 Marissa, instead finds a central spot on the patio and graciously fields comments on the company, about which everyone has an opinion. Esther Dyson, a well-known Internet pioneer and investor, comes over to praise Mayer’s most controversial decision to date: a ban on the practice of employees’ working at home. The ban prompted a national debate and some angry criticism that Mayer lacks empathy for women who can’t afford the resources she herself enjoys: a private nursery in her office, a personal staff, and all the child care she needs. Mayer elaborates, a little defensively, on her reasons for the change. She never meant it as any kind of larger statement about society, but simply as the right decision for Yahoo, where by various accounts working from home often meant hardly working. Teams are happier now that absent participants don’t teleconference in for meetings. Messages on Yahoo’s “devel-random” e-mail list, the company’s informal forum, have lately turned positive. And in perhaps the clearest sign of support, employees have, she tells Dyson, “stopped leaking my e-mails” to the press.
you can leave.’ ” She has learned that if she makes herself stay for a fixed period, she often gets over her social awkwardness and ends up having fun. That seems to be the case tonight. Mayer turns more gregarious as she explains the presence at one edge of the garden of a two-story, miniaturized model of Palo Alto’s Peninsula Creamery, a local diner where Stanford students go for milk shakes (the pineapple malts are Mayer’s favorite). She and her husband, Zachary Bogue, a venture capitalist who invests in start-ups focused on “big data,” bought the fifteen-foot, red-and-white playhouse at a benefit auction and had a forklift deposit it over their redwood fence the previous week.
THEY’LL TELL ME WHEN THEY THINK I DID SOMETHING AMAZING, BUT THEY’LL TELL ME WHEN THEY THINK I COULD DO BETTER.
As entrepreneurs from Japan, India, and upstate New York approach to introduce themselves, Mayer quietly inquires about their companies with the discerning focus of someone who might one day write a check to buy them. Usually, she finds some point of personal connection—an engineer they both worked with at Google, or a tech lab they both know overseas. She suffers from shyness, she says, and has had to discipline herself to deal with it. For the first fifteen minutes she wants to leave any party, including one in her own home. “I will literally look at my watch and say, ‘You can’t leave until time x,’ ” she says. “ ‘And if you’re still having a terrible time at time x,
Macallister won’t be old enough to play in the structure for a while, but Mayer seems to have bought it just as much for herself. Her taste runs to the brightly colored and l i g h t h e a r te d — “ h a p p y art,” she calls it—like the plate-mounted Jeff Koons balloon dogs in her airy kitchen and the Roy Lichtenstein print in the front hall of her cheerful, comfortable, but not especially grand Craftsman-style house. In the dining room, an entire wall is covered with purple-and-gold marquees that Mayer and Bogue had made for the tabletops at their wedding, printed with words representing their favorite things. These include on her side PEPPERMINT, COLORS, PARIS, and ETRO. Tonight she is wearing an Oscar de la Renta dress, with daubs of yellow, blue, and green on a white field, reminiscent of her most famous product: the Google home page. At some point, the guests notice that she’s vanished. She calls this her “CEO exit,” disappearing upstairs without good-byes while the party carries on. w w w. g e t t e m a g . c o m
Mayer’s bright-color and bold-pattern aesthetic comes from her Finnish mother, an art teacher who surrounded her with Marimekko prints she can still cite by name. The love of science comes from her father, an environmental engineer who worked for water companies. “They’re definitely in the camp of allies, not adorers,” she says. “They’ll tell me when they think I did something amazing, but they’ll tell me when they think I could do better. I think like my dad, but I have a huge kinship with my mom.” Growing up with a younger brother in Wausau, Wisconsin, she never had fewer than one after-school activity per day: ballet, ice-skating, piano, swimming, debate team, Brownies. She still talks to her best friend from junior high every few weeks. “It was a very wellrounded childhood, with lots of different

And I was like, Oh, right, it would be nice to have an impact that’s bigger than just me. It’s not like I had a grand plan where I weighed all the pros and cons of what I wanted to do—it just sort of happened.”
One of the program’s alumnae, Jess Lee, the CEO of the fashion site Polyvore, describes Mayer as a perfectionist. “She’ll spot a lot of little details other people might not notice,” she says. “But when you add them up in aggregate, it’s the difference between a beautiful, polished product and one that feels more awkward.” Lee notes that when Mayer recently hosted an APM reunion at her house, she took time to write a personal note in each of the 200 commemorative photo books.

Since her arrival she has worked 16-hour days, six days a week to make Peek a major player in the nearly $27 billion travel activities market. The idea for Peek came to Bashir while researching a birthday trip to Istanbul. "I spent 20 hours looking up things to do, and I wished there was a one-stop shop to book amazing activities online." Bashir then raised $1.4 million in seed money, launching the site last October. "The hope is to grow big enough to go public," says Bashir. Her investors include some tech heavyweights: Google Chairman Eric Schmidt calls her a protégé and Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey lunches with her. Fast Company named Bashir one of the 100 most creative people in the business this year, and in 2012, Forbes named her in their list of "30 Under 30: Technology" entrepreneurs, which also includes Facebook's FB +3.91% Mark Zuckerberg. The website offers travel excursions in 12 U.S. markets and launches in London and Paris this summer. "Wouldn't it be amazing if we spent as much energy investing in experiences as we do investing in things," says Bashir. The premise of Peek is that there is always a new experience waiting for you if you're willing to give it a try. She is busy doing the legwork for your next vacation so that you don't have to, including lining up notable personalities like Tory Burch and Wolfgang Puck to curate perfect days in their favorite cities.

hrendts, the current CEO of Burberry, will head up Apple’s online and brickand-mortar retail stores starting in mid-2014. The CEO of a high-fashion brand may not sound like an obvious fit for a tech giant. But Ahrendts has garnered widespread respect for turning around Burberry -- particularly for expanding its presence in Asia, a market that Apple has yet to conquer. Ahrendts, 52, also injected a decidedly tech-focused strategy into Burberry’s operations, leveraging both social tools like Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) and enterprise software from Salesforce (CRM) and SAP (SAP). Ahrendts will fill an important role at Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), which has lacked a retail chief since John Browett was fired in October 2012.
JULIA PEPITONE WHEN ANGELA AHRENDTS TAKES OVER APPLE’S RETAIL BUSINESS NEXT YEAR, SHE’LL BE THE ONLY FEMALE IN THE COMPANY’S 10-PERSON EXEC SUITE.
Beyond Ahrendts’ wealth of experience, the simple fact that she is a woman will also bridge a serious gap at Apple. Like many tech companies, Apple’s executive suite is strikingly homogenous: Nine white men currently serve as executives, including CEO Tim Cook and eight senior vice presidents. Ahrendts will be the ninth. Ahrendts isn’t the first or highest-ranking female executive in Apple’s history, however. Deborah Coleman served at Apple for 11 years, through 1992, in a variety of high-ranking positions: chief financial officer, VP of operations, and VP of information systems and technology. Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business- Females are better represented at the vice president level at Apple, with women currently serving as VPs in fields like operations, communications and accounting. Andrea Jung, the former CEO of Avon (AVP, Fortune 500), is the sole female director on Apple’s eight-person board. The lack of diversity —in regard to both gender and ethnicity —at large tech companies continues to spark debate. The latest high-profile flap came after Twitter filed for an initial public offering without a female board director. Apple’s appointment of Ahrendts, who was the highest paid CEO in the U.K. last year, does a small bit to help that problem. The negative flip-side to Ahrendts stepping down from a CEO role to become a senior VP—Her resignation from Burberry will leave Britain’s FTSE 100 stock index with just two female CEOs. MINSHEW GAVE US A FEW TIPS ON HOW TO GET TO THE CAREER OF YOUR DREAMS AND WHY SHE MOVED HER STARTUP TO NEW YORK: NB: You’re the queen of networking and that’s a big part of what helped The Muse grow so quickly. How do you manage all these events while running a startup? KM: For almost the first year of The Muse’s life, I would do 5 to 8 networking events a week. And I don’t necessary think that’s the right path for everyone, but I realized that as an entrepreneur, one of my strengths was finding the right people who could help us. I didn’t come into startups with any network. I mean I literally knew basically nobody in tech, and so I had to build it from the ground up. My strategy was to force myself to go to

NB: How should new entrepreneurs take advantage of the startup community and what questions should they be asking?
KM: San Francisco and New York are very, very different when it comes to startups. They both have advantages. I think that the New York startup scene tends to be a little bit more made up of people who were in other careers, so a lot of the other founders that I know came from finance, or fashion, or consulting, or the nonprofit world and they came up against a problem that frustrated them so much that they had to leave their job and start a company to solve it.
KM: I’ve found that one of the great things about the startup community is that it’s really open, there’re a lot of people who are willing to give you advice. When we were going to raise our seed round, I tried to sit down with probably 25 or more founders who had raised seed rounds and I asked them what worked, what didn’t, what I should do, what I

CHANGE THE
TECH INDUSTRY THE BEST TIPS YOU’LL FIND TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE TECH FIELD
According to the 2010 National Center for Women & Information Technology Report Card, in 2009, women represented 57% of all undergraduates, yet earned only 18% of computer information and science degrees. In fact, the percentage of women in computer and mathematical professions declined to below 25 percent between 2000 and 2009.
The fact that top executives at global companies are primarily men clearly didn’t stop Marissa Mayer from becoming CEO of Yahoo! or Cheryl Sandburg from becoming COO of Facebook.

HOW TO ENSURE
SUCCESS
1) Earn Respect
It’s a universal rule: people who wish to succeed in a group environment must earn the respect of group members. You know your stuff, you deliver and you work for the team — not for yourself. When you show up to a meeting, you are prepared to speak about the subject and ask helpful questions. Your goal is to figure out how you can deliver value to your team and your organization.
2) Speak Up Voice is what divides leaders from followers. Those who have a voice — and use it — influence people around them.
3) Be Aware of Other s Can you take constructive criticism? Can you give constructive criticism? Do you know which of your team members needs recognition? Do you know which want to be left alone or need more autonomy? Knowing when to let others thrive and when to intercept is key to leading successfully.
4) Be Yourself Nothing is easier to smell than inauthenticity. Just because you’re a woman in the tech industry, it doesn’t mean you have something to prove. You do not have to analyze each move and compete with your male peers or weave illusions around your co-workers. Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage.

Vintage Cameras
If you’ve got a bunch of vintage cameras that don’t work anymore and are lying around collecting dust, this new project might interest you. A Flickr user named Jason Hull recently went shopping at thrift stores and flea markets, picking up mass produced film cameras and repurposed them into something useful: by turning them into night lights. The process is: rip out as much as you can from its internals, until you have enough space to fit in a lamp which can light up the “shell” like a regular night light. In some cases, the lights were even sticking out of the cameras to give the appearance of an oversized flashbulb. Now you know what to do with those old cameras you have around. UBERGIZMO.COM
