Richland Main Library Programming and Interiors - Completed Renovation 2014 - 2016 Columbia, SC
The Richland Library Branches started as a study for developing a new approach to designing the ‘Library of the 21st Century’ called Library as Studio. Richland Main Library was the first of 10 projects. The main library renovation, currently under construction, will be the first to have the “Library as Studio” concept applied to it. An interior renovation of the award-winning 200,000 s.f. building, this will be a flagship transformation of a customer-based approach, as well as a physical transformation of what is currently expected of a library. At the core of the renovation is the concept that the library is a platform for the following; social and community advancement, storytelling in all of its vibrant forms, innovation and creativity and, and a support a variety of learning styles, at all stages. The goal of the renovation is to create carefully considered physical conditions to enable these activities, while recognizing that conventional library design has not supported these most effectively. Taking cues from a wide range of physical experiences, including public parks, public markets, arts spaces, business incubators and interactive museums.

North Fork Retreat ADA Second Home 2015 Fall Semester Peconic, NY
The Land of Marsh meets Vineyards. North Fork, NY is located on the furthest point on the northern peninsula of Long Island. It is mainly made up of the Town of Southold and part of the Town of Riverhead. There two main bodies of water around North Fork. On the South side there is the Peconic River that is shared with the South Fork that all of us know for the long wide beaches of the Hamptons. The northern body of water is the Long Island Sound. There is also several islands around this area, but most only visit Shelter Island and Gardiner’s Island. Not only is home to some of New York’s best Chardonnays and Merlots, but North Fork has a rapidly growing Farm to Table Cuisine. As you travel up the peninsula you will find the road full of fruit and vegetable stands as you go in and out of several small
picturesque towns. At the end of the road you will find Orient and Orient Point consisting Orient Beach State Park which is 45,000 feet of frontage on Gardiner’s Bay. Activities in this area are based solely on truly enjoying the environment for which you came. If you are interested in the culinary aspect North Fork offers fishing, crabbing, and clamming on the bay, sound and adjacent creeks and beaches as well as an abundance of vineyards to see the making of your favorites wines and cheeses. For those that love the outdoors there are activities such as kayaking through the Peconic River or biking through the hills of the peninsula. However no matter if on land or water visitors love observing the abundance of wildlife that exists in this area. For the more rain stricken days visitors enjoy visiting the local art galleries and antique shops throughout the towns.

New York City is the place that we all love to hate, but deep down there is a common true love that is impossible to part from but deadly to keep. So, as native New Yorkers, my clients, Percy and Luna, know they have to keep that balance strong. Percy is a Professor at Columbia in the Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology department and Luna was a Dance teacher at the Lincoln Center. She retired two year ago after her second knee surgery. Now she teaches younger age children in a small studio on the Upper West Side during the school year. Percy has reached his time to retire but since his area of focus is relatively new to Columbia they have asked him to stay for another 5 years and he was eager to accept. Percy is also an advocate for clean eating and sustainable farming. In Fact, this passion is what kept bringing him to back to North Fork. Percy and Luna first visited North Fork 15 years ago on a trip with some friends to share a house they rented for the month of May. Eager to try the local food and wine, Percy and Luna quickly fell in love with this quaint little town. Percy became acquainted with the local farms and their techniques and continued to reach out to them over the years for collaboration on sustainable farming. After decades of renting homes and staying in friends in North Fork, Percy and Luna have decided it is finally time for them to build their own get away home.

Inverse Impact Next Generation Hotels
Join me for Exploring, Sharing, and Trading while leaving nothing behind, but a cleaner planet.
In our busy lives we often forget how much of an impact our every decision has on the rest of the world. We think to ourselves, “Oh, this one piece of trash won’t actually harm the environment in any substantial way,” or “This tank of gas is nothing compared to that 18-wheeler.” (The one delivery my groceries to my front door.) Yet we fail to realize that everyone else is thinking, and doing, the exact same thing. Which means that quite rapidly, day by day, each and everyone of us, in someway, is causing harm to the beautiful world that we claim to love so much. However not only does no one want to give up their luxuries for the greater good of humanity, no one should have to. Doing the right thing should come naturally, without thought. There should not be a question of trash vs recycling or solar energy vs limited fossil fuels. In collaboration with Next Generation Hotels, I have designed a series of floating rooms made completely from recycled materials and interior furnishings that can be easily assembled any where in the world. The boat-rooms are net zero, requiring very little upkeep from any direct management or staff. Instead they will rely heavily on the support of the community and the users. Supported by a sharing economy with many trades, the rooms will be maintained and decorated by the local community in which it is docked. Not only will the money made from the rooms will be returned to the local tradesmen and they will also have the pride of ownership because together they have helped create a welcoming place for tourist to stay.
The Concept I started with the question, “What in the world causes the most waste and how can I reuse it?” I quickly realized I already knew the answer to this as I took a sip from my beautiful plastic smart water bottle. We currently only recover 5% of the plastic produced in the world, leaving the remaining 95% to partially disintegrate over the next 1,000 years, that’s if we stop producing it. From the concept of up-cycling everything and leaving nothing to waste, I found myself wondering, “If we don’t produce any more trash, what are we going to do with all of the trash containers?” Well, they will become rooms of course! After gathering this information I designed a boat house that would float on large plastic drums, create shelter with old trash bins, and harvest rain water through recycled water dispensers to be used for utilities in the home, and all together creating a positive interaction between plastic, water and the basic human needs.
The Location Ha Long Bay
With the Next Generation Hotel I have accomplished my design objectives by designing a line of floating boat-rooms that can be easily assembled any where in the world. The boatrooms are net zero, requiring very little upkeep from any direct management or staff but instead they rely heavily on the support of the community and the users. The first Next Generation Hotel will be opening along the coast of Vietnam. The boat rooms will be found docked at the locations called out on the map to the left. There will be 6 dock locations that can support two boat-homes at one time. The home will be powered by steam engines that will heat off of recycled paper. Even though the home will have the ability to move they are not intended to travel for long distances. Instead they are intended to stay in small area and to be tended to by local community members.

Materials Used As a designer it is my job to always design with gratitude to the planet by never negatively impacting it’s perfect balance while encouraging a human lifestyle that will promote a sharing and thoughtful economy. To me this means paying close attention to every detail of the project, making the least impact with every material, and the largest impact with my design. With the Next Generation Hotel Rooms, I decided to take this one step further and to not only reduce the impact by using sustainable items, but to create the entire floating boat-room out of recycled material. Once I decided to focus on trash, in particular plastic, as my main element, I began to look into multiple ways that I could reuse different types of plastic. I started with the base of my structure, large water or oil drums, for the pontoons. Moving up the structure, I have designed an herb garden out of reused Coke bottles that will be watered by the harvested rain water that will collect in recycled water dispensers on the roof. This harvested water will also be used in the sink and toilet. For the main structure I have decided to up-cycle a trash container, since almost the entire boat will be made out of pieces that are typically pieces of trash. The wood throughout the entire boat-room will be reclaimed and depending on the location of the hotel, will also be used for decorative uses inside the room.

The Dakota Duplex
The Dakota (also known as Dakota Apartments) is a cooperative apartment building located on the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, United States. It was built between 1880 and 1884. The Dakota is considered to be one of Manhattan’s most prestigious and exclusive cooperative residential building. The architectural firm of Henry Janeway Hardenbergh was commissioned to create the design for Edward Clark, head of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
