Virginia Tech Interior Design Portfolio 2024
My name is Lauryn Wade and I’m currently a third year Interior Design student at Virginia Tech pursuing a Bachelor of Science. For the last three years, Interior Design has become not just my career but also my passion. Design is such a rewarding experience, working with communities and others to bring every vision to life.
Outside of studio, I love making memories with family and friends, spending time with my cat, and exploring new places!

Victrola
Victrola, the ancestor of Victor’s Talking Machine Company, is a company that sells products ranging from modern record players to vintage turntables. Since 1906, Victrola has merged the idea of new technology and timeless style. Their core value, “Marrying the sophistication of yesterday with the technology of tomorrow,” highly informs my design concept.
By blending modern functionality with vintage detailing, this workplace design offers a harmonious balance between innovation and nostalgia, fostering a creative and collaborative environment where employees feel inspired to embrace the past and present.

Addressing Acoustics in the Workplace
In most busy offices, it is hard to find a quiet place to work. With this in mind, each space is furnished with some form of acoustic property; whether it is through furniture, lighting, panels, or all the above, each elements are strategically placed to help with sound absorption. Victrola is a music company after all.
These felt acoustic screens have unique cuts strategically designed through them that allow sound to pass through.

The first floor is a dedicated communal space for everyone who comes and goes. The bar area is converted from a normal coffee bar during work hours to a full top-shelf bar after hours. The main emphasis of this floor is to ensure the work-life balance. However, for those who travel or have client meetings, the first floor has meeting rooms and an office for easy access and navigation.
The second floor is a dedicated work environment. These spaces are more focused, heads-down, and built for one-on-one conversation. The phone booths are conveniently placed across the flex workspaces and offices if someone were to take a phone call. The flex workstations are modular and can be rearranged in any direction or shape.

Spring 2023 | YMCA Remodel | 5 Weeks | With Chris Learish + Symphoni Daniels
The Blacksburg YMCA is a vital part of our community in so many different ways. The YMCA is dedicated to ensuring families and children are supported, stable, and secure through a variety of different programs. Their impact on local communities everywhere is nothing short of inspiring.
After further reflection upon the YMCA’s overarching mission and values, our group has created the concept of transparency. Thinking of someone in a transparent state allows freedom from discrimination and allows one to be who they are raw and unfiltered. We applied this concept to our design with not only the space in mind but also the occupants. With our design and concept, the YMCA becomes a place where people are celebrated and welcomed for who they are in their transparent state.
For this project, I contributed by creating the concept, aiding in building the model, creating material specifications, choosing color palettes, choosing furniture, and poster designs.

Commericial Kitchen Axonometeric
Adding a commercial kitchen to the YMCA was a must for the client. It now allows for cooking classes, after-school snack prepping, and prepping for Meals on Main. It is equipped with all stainless steel appliances, slip-resistant tiling, and ADA tables.
Floor Plan NTS
Utilizing the primary colors of the YMCA’s logo, we wanted to create an artistic and abstract mural that represents the meaning of community. This mural is located in the reception area to show that everyone is welcome at the YMCA.

Design Charrette
Spring 2023 | Exploring AI | 2 Weeks | With Chris Learish + Symphoni Daniels
Design Charrette proposes an untraditional take on an extravagant hotel lobby and luxury exclusive suite. The client has traveled from the year 2354, where personality blending became the new trend. For this project, we chose three different people with three different personalities, formed them into one, and designed a hotel lobby and suite based on said personalities. Our client, Saku Ladear, is a combination of the personalities of Yayoi Kusama, Harry Houdini, and Selena Quintanilla.
For this project, I contributed by generating AI photos, aiding in rendering, choosing color palettes, choosing furniture, and poster designs.

Inspired by Yayoi Kusama
Inspired by Selena Quintanilla
Yayoi Kusama, also known as the “Polka Dot Princess,” is known for her love of all things polka dot. This lounge area modestly conveys Yayoi’s personality through the use of curved shapes, circular fixtures, and an abstracted polka dot wall feature.
Selena Quintanilla, also known as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” is known for her femininity and stage presence. This luxury suite conveys Selena’s personality through the use of feminine colors that reflect her fashion style and spotlighting that represents her shining performances on stage.
Inspired by Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini, also known as the “Man Who Escaped Death,” is known for his daunting escape acts and his love for illusions. This luxury lobby and hallway convey Houdini’s personality through the use of exaggerated curves and mirrors that represent an illusion to the eye, a fish tank that mimics one of Houdini’s daring escape acts, and tall ceilings that reiterate the height of another one of his escape acts.
Solitude’s Serenade
Solitude’s Serenade is an openly free form that creates a story through the message of a song. This spatial and visual exhibition represents heartache, loneliness, and nostalgia as interpreted by my song choice, “All I Wanted” by Paramore.
This project explores the marriage between solitude, introspection, and the symbolism of a ribcage. My concept embarks on the unique journey of discovering happiness within the confines of loneliness, drawing inspiration from the idea that our inner selves can be both a santuary and a source of joy.

Abstracted Plan View
The ribcage is metaphorically depicted as a sanctuary, representing one’s thoughts and emotions. It symbolizes the protective cocoon where the soul seeks solace and self-discovery.
A gentle embrace. As we hug a loved one goodbye, our ribcages intertwine, heart to heart. In this space, the ribcage pieces are reaching out to each other but never come to a point of touching. This design decision pays homage to the song about missing someone you can’t have back.
Both the ceiling and floor of this exhibition space are mirrors to make the user feel seen and represent our inner soloace. The rib structures are composed of stucco, a scratchy and grainy texture, used to mimic the bone-like feel of actual ribs.
As day shifts to night, the atmosphere of the exhibition shifts as well. At night our thoughts, stressors, and anxieties are often the loudest and most intense.
Intense LED lights are fixed into the rib-like structures. Again, this reiterates the feeling of anxiety and loneliness as depicted by the color red. The reflections along the walls are created through an illusion as polished concrete mirrors the effect of the LED lights.
