La zona de entrecanchas de Los Pinos acogió el pasado miércoles la presentación del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo, una de las cuatro competiciones más importantes del mundo, dentro de la temporada de verano. El acto contó con la participación del alcalde de San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix; del director general de Sotogrande S.A., Ramón Luengo; del presidente de la Federación Española de Polo, Jaime Espinosa de los Monteros; y del vicepresidente de Santa María Polo Club, Luis Estrada. Los maestros de ceremonia estuvieron acompañados por siete de los jugadores más populares que este año compiten por las tres copas en las canchas de Sotogrande. El argentino Adolfo Cambiaso, considerado el mejor polista del mundo que defiende el equipo de Valiente (EEUU), no faltó a la cita.

También estuvieron David Pelón Stirling (Ayala Polo Team), Gonzalo Pieres (Ellerston), Juan Martín Nero (Lechuza Caracas), Eduardo Novillo Estrada (Las Monjitas), Marcos di Paola (King Power), Pite Merlos (HB HB Polo Team) y Facundo Sola (RH Polo). Los jugadores posa-

M. / SOTOGRANDE.- El director general de Sotogrande S.A., Ramón Luengo, destacó en la presentación del torneo que la urbanización es una referencia mundial del turismo residencial. “No hay nada comparable a Sotogrande y una de las cosas que lo hace incomparable es este torneo. Sotogrande sin el polo sería menos Sotogrande”, indicó Luengo. El director de Sotogrande S.A. alabó el esfuerzo que cada año hace Santa María Polo Club por mejorar este evento y en perseguir la excelencia. “Todos los que estamos
en Sotogrande deberíamos intentar hacer lo mismo”, subrayó Luengo, que repasó las mejoras realizadas en las zonas infantil y comercial. Asimismo, valoró el atractivo que supone este año la presencia del restaurante Palenque. Luengo afirmó que el proyecto de expansión del club es “muy importante e ilusionante”. Del mismo modo, comentó que las previsiones turísticas para este verano son buenas, ya que se están registrando ocupaciones “altísimas” en hoteles y aumentando los ingresos por visitante.

Stirling. Respecto a esta última, destacó que este verano participe Pelón, hijo de David Stirling, del que dijo “fue el que puso a Sotogrande en el mapa mundial del polo”. Estrada resaltó que esta edición del torneo es de récord ya que cuenta con 32 equipos, 12 de ellos de Alto Handicap. El formato vuelve a ser el de 3x3, con tres copas -Oro, Plata y Bronce-, tres handicaps -Alto, Mediano y Bajo- y tres canchas. El vicepresidente de Santa María indicó que de los 36 días de competición, en sólo tres -las finales- habrá que abonar una entrada benéfica siendo el resto gratuito. “Hay pocos eventos así en el mundo”, subrayó. Asimismo, hizo hincapié en el nivel de este torneo con 146 partidos, 136 jugadores, más de 1.200 caballos y equipos de 20 nacionalidades de cuatro continentes. La competición se complementa con otros muchos atractivos. Estrada citó entre ellos el que se haya incrementado la zona comercial con más de 40 tiendas, más de 60 palcos, el servicio de restauración a cargo de Sodexo Prestige, la nueva zona infantil o la llegada del restaurante Palenque del chef con una estrella Michelín Pepe Rodríguez. El alcalde confía en que la apuesta por el polo repercuta en el empleo R. M. / sotogrande.- El alcalde de San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, no quiso perderse la presentación del torneo pese a lo apretado de su agenda el pasado miércoles. El regidor resaltó la importancia de este evento para el municipio, al tratarse del torneo más prestigioso a nivel nacional y europeo y estar entre los cuatro mejores del mundo. “Estamos encantados con la apuesta de Santa María con Sotogrande, ya que nos convierte en una referencia mundial”, manifestó Ruiz Boix. El alcalde indicó que Sotogrande es el emblema turístico de San Roque y que el polo arrastra cada año al municipio a más de 70.000 visitantes. “Me gustaría que conocieran todo el municipio porque tenemos de todo”, dijo. Impacto económico Ruiz Boix también se refirió a los planes de expansión del club. Recordó que el futuro Distrito Equino cuenta con el apoyo de los ayuntamientos de San Roque, Jimena y Castellar. “Estoy seguro de que pronto será una realidad para que crezcamos como referente mundial”, manifestó. El alcalde hizo hincapié en la inversión prevista de 1.500 millones de euros para el proyecto, que contempla dos ho-

María Polo Club también agradeció el apoyo de los patrocinadores Land Rover (principal del torneo), Bulgari (que se estrena con la Copa de Oro), Silex (Copa de Plata) e Isolas (Copa de Bronce). Asimismo, quiso mostrar su gratitud a Sotogrande S.A., Grupo NH, Ayuntamiento de San Roque y Turismo Andaluz por su apoyo logrando que el evento haya sido declarado de Interés Turístico Andaluz. La apuesta de Turismo Andaluz por esta cita deportiva es ejemplo del gran impacto económico y social que provoca en la zona, generando más de 500 empleos y unos beneficios superiores a los 25 millones de euros. Competición La competición internacional se desarrolla del 25 de julio al 31 de agosto en Sotogrande con un palmarés de tres copas. Del 25 de julio al 1 de agosto se está celebrando la Copa de Bronce Isolas, este fin de semana arranca la Copa de Plata Silex que vive su final el 15 de agosto, y del 17 al 30 de agosto, la más esperada, la Copa de Oro Bulgari. A nivel deportivo, se trata del cuarto torneo más importante del mundo, con dos de sus copas puntuables en el World Polo Tour (WPT).

El regidor dijo que es un “orgullo” tener una de las capitales mundiales del polo gracias a este torneo en el que estarán los mejores jugadores, equipos y caballos. Ruiz Boix indicó que su deseo es que, una vez acabe el torneo, “todos piensen en volver a San Roque lo antes posible”.
Espinosa de los Monteros: “Lo único malo de Sotogrande es que la temporada es muy corta” R. M. / sotogrande.- El presidente de la Federación Española de Polo, Jaime Espinosa de los Monteros, participó en la presentación del torneo recién descendido del caballo tras jugar un encuentro en una de las canchas aledañas del recinto. Espinosa de los Monteros se mostró “muy orgulloso” por este “magnífico” torneo internacional que está entre los cuatro grandes del mundo. “Siempre digo que en el polo tenemos cuatro grandes como en el tenis y Sotogrande está entre ellos gracias a Santa María Polo Club”, manifestó el presidente de la Federación Española de Polo. Espinosa de los Monteros quiso dar la bienvenida a los 32 equipos participantes que llegan de cuatro continentes, algo que no es fácil. “Es impresionante lo que ha conseguido Santa María con esta organización tan espectacular”. Asimismo, dio la bienvenida a la firma Bulgari como nuevo patrocinador del evento.

Para el presidente de la Federación Española es “increíble” que en este torneo haya días con hasta ocho partidos en cuatro canchas. “Como jugador además tengo que decir que en la cancha todo está perfecto. Nos tienen muy mal
acostumbrados porque no es normal encontrar estos estándares de calidad fuera de Sotogrande”, manifestó. Espinosa de los Monteros comentó que cuando le pregunta a los jugadores qué es lo que más les gusta de Sotogran-
de, éstos le resaltan dos cosas. En primer lugar, el nivel de calidad de las canchas y la organización. Y en segundo lugar, al margen de la competición, “la posibilidad que ofrece Sotogrande de poder disfrutar de unas vacaciones con los familiares y amigos. Y esto no se da en ningún otro torneo”. El presidente de la Española, asimismo, dijo que cuando les pregunta por lo que menos les gusta, los jugadores les responden: “Lo único malo de Sotogrande es que la temporada es muy corta”. Espinosa de los Monteros destacó la importancia del proyecto del Distrito Equino, que calificó de “fundamental” para acabar con la estacionalidad. Por ello, dijo, todos deben apoyarlo para que el polo siga creciendo en Sotogrande.

Last Wednesday, the presentation of the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament, one of the top four most important competitions in the world of the summer season, was held at the grounds of Los Pinos. The Mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix; the Director General of Sotogrande S.A., Ramón Luengo; the President of the Spanish Polo Federation, Jaime Espinosa de los Monteros; and the Vicepresident of Santa María Polo Club, Luis Estrada showed their support by attending this event. At the sides of the experts of this ceremony, were seven of this year’s most popular players, ready to compete for the three cups on the courts of Sotogrande. he declared. Estrada made sure that the families who have made the positioning of polo in Spain possible were not left out, such as those of Zobel, Mora Figueroa, Parladé, Prada, Domecq and Stirling. Regarding the latter, he reminded us that this summer that Pelón shall be taking part, the son of

Likewise, he appraised the benefits brought by this year’s arrival of the restaurant Palenque. Luengo confirmed that the club’s plan for expansion is both “very important and exciting.” He stated that the tourism prospects for this summer are positive, hotels are booked to the maximum and visitors are spending more.

The format shall once again be 3x3, with three cups –Gold, Silver and Bronze, three handicaps – High, Medium and Low – and of course, three courts. The Vice-President of Santa Maria indicated that, out of the entire 36 days of the competition, tickets only must be bought for three, that is to say the finals. “Events like this are few to none in the world”, he mentioned. Likewise he drew emphasis to the figures of the tournament, with 146 games, 136 players, more than 1,200 horses and teams from 20 countries from four different continents. The competition comes with numerous benefits. M. / sotogrande.- Despite his busy schedule, the Mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz, was sure not to miss the tournament presentation last Wednesday. The Councillor highlighted the significance of this event for the town, as it is one of the most prestigious tournaments on both a National and European level, and is ranked amongst the top four in the whole world. “We are delighted with the commitment Santa Maria Polo Club has made with Sotogrande, making us a global reference in the sector” stated Ruiz Boix. The Mayor pointed out that Sotogrande is the epitome of tourism for San Roque and the sport of polo attracts more than 70,000 visitors to the municipality every year. “I hope they all get a chance to make the most of what our town has to offer” he said.

Rover as the tournament’s main sponsors, and the sponsors Bulgari (new this year with the Gold Cup), Silex (Silver Cup) and Isolas (Bronze Cup). He likewise wished to share his gratitude towards Sotogrande S.A., Grupo NH, the Town Council of San Roque and Turismo Andaluz, as thanks to their help the event has been declared of Touristic Value for Andalusia. The commitment of this event towards Andalusian Tourism is an example of the huge financial and social impact that it has brought to the area, creating more than 500 jobs and revenue of more than 25 million euros. The Competition The international competition is to be held from the 25th July to 31st August in Sotogrande, where teams shall fight it out on the courts for the three cups. From the 25th July to 1st August the Isolas Bronze Cup shall be held, this weekend the Silex Silver Cup shall commence, the final of which is the 15th of August, and finally, from the 17th to 30th August is the most awaited event, the Bulgari Gold Cup. On a sporting level, said tournament is ranked fourth in the world of its type, as two of its cups may count towards points in the World Polo Tour (WPT).
Financial impact Ruiz Boix also talked about the club’s plans to expand. He recalled that this future Equestrian District relies on the support of the Town Councils of San Roque, Jimena and Castellar. “I am positive that once everything falls into place we will be able to grow and become a world-

San Roque, unfortunately, is currently home to more than 4,000 unemployed citizens and therefore we hope that they shall benefit from the employment opportunities that this project can offer” declared Ruiz Boix. The Councillor claimed that it is an “honour” to be one of the world capitals of polo thanks to this tournament in which the best players, teams and horses shall be competing. Ruiz Boix stated that, once the tournament comes to an end, it is his wish for all visitors “to want to turn around and come back to San Roque as soon as possible.”.

M. / sotogrande.- The President of the Spanish Federation of Polo, Jaime Espinosa de los Monteros, straight off the polo court, took part in the presentation of the tournament. Espinosa de los Monteros appeared to be “very proud” thanks to this “magnificent” international tournament, which is said to be the fourth most important in the world. “I have always said that Polo, like tennis, has four grand tournaments, and now thanks to Santa Maria Polo Club, Sotogrande is amongst these top four” stated the President of the Spanish Polo Federation. Espinosa de los Monteros, despite the difficult task, welcomed the 32 participating teams that travelled to the tournament from four different continents. “Santa Maria has achieved something that is truly “spectacular” in their organisation of this tournament: it is remarkable.” Likewise, he also gladly received the company Bulgari, as the event’s new sponsor.

In the words of the President of the Spanish Polo Federation, it is “incredible” to see up to eight games played across four courts in one single day at this tournament. “As a player, I must also point out that the
courts are in perfect conditions. We are very spoilt in Sotogrande, as these high standards of quality can only be found here” he declared. Espinosa de los Monteros commented that, when players
ask him what he likes most about Sotogrande, he always gives two answers. In first place is the quality of not only the courts, but also the organisation. And in second place, aside from the competition is “the possibility Sotogrande offers to enjoy holidays with family and friends. No other tournament can offer that.” The President of the Spanish Federation likewise commented that, when he asks players what they least like, they always reply, “The only downside to Sotogrande is its very short season.” Espinosa de los Monteros highlighted the significance of the Equestrian District project, which he deemed as “critical” in bringing an end to the seasonal nature of Sotogrande. He stated that we all must show our support to ensure the sport of polo grows and grows in Sotogrande.

LA VERDAD SOTOGRANDE.- El equipo Leones se alzó con el primero de los trofeos del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo tras proclamarse campeón de la Copa de Bronce Isolas de Mediano Handicap. Leones venció en la final a FCT por 12 a 9. El equipo formado por Pablo Mora Figueroa (reemplaza a Petrus Fernandini en esta copa), Nacho Domecq, Guillermo Li y Ricardo Trujillo fue el primer campeón de la temporada de polo en Sotogrande después de jugar una gran final, seguida por una numerosa grada que se acercó a la cancha principal de Río de Santa María Polo Club. El inicio del partido fue bastan-
te tibio, sin mayores emociones, pero en la recta final la historia fue completamente distinta. Ambos equipos sacaron a relucir su mejor juego y el partido ganó en emoción y comenzó un ida y vuelta vertiginoso. La experiencia de Nacho Domecq y Riki Trujillo apareció en toda su dimensión en el chukker final para que Leones se despegase en el marcador que, a falta de dos minutos para el final, llegaba muy ajustado. Sin embargo, pudo celebrar el triunfo que le dio el título de campeón. La final de la Copa de Bronce Isolas de Alto Handicap entre Valiente y Ayala Polo Team, se disputaba ayer en la cancha IV de Los Pinos desde las seis

de 27 hoyos creados por Dave Thomas. Inaugurado en 1998, sus lagos lo hacen único y permite jugar hasta tres recorridos diferentes de 18 hoyos. El campo de golf de La Reserva de Sotogrande, inaugurado en 2003, fue diseñado por el
arquitecto norteamericano Cabell B.Robinson. Sus 18 hoyos son un fantástico desafío para cualquier jugador. Los otros dos campos de Sotogrande son los del San Roque Club. El Old Course data de 1990 y es obra de Dave Thomas;

La oferta del municipio se completa con los dos campos de Alcaidesa -el Link y el Heathland- y por el de La Cañada, en Guadiaro. The town is home to nine brand new courses, six of which can be found in Sotogrande. This golfing experience is unique for lovers of the sport and prides itself on the organisation of top tournaments. The quality of their facilities is just one of the many reasons it is one of the top sporting-residential tourism destinations. Courses Two of the top ten courses in Continental Europe can be found in Sotogrande. Valderrama Golf Club has held the top spot in this ranking since 1989 and is situated amongst the best 50 clubs in the world. Valderrama has been globally known since its organisation of the Ryder Cup in 1997 and today it is still the only club outside of

The legendary course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, is also home to the Volvo Masters and is currently the main location for the prestigious Andalusia Masters. Also designed by Robert Trent, and the first course he
constructed, the Royal Golf Club Sotogrande which opened its doors in 1964 is placed seventh amongst European courses. Almenara Golf belonging to Grupo NH is another emblematic club, thanks to its natural park with 27 holes created by Dave Thomas. Opened in 1998, its beautiful lakes and three di-
fferent rounds of 18-holes make this course truly unique. The Reserva de Sotogrande golf course, opened in 2003, was designed by the American architect Cabell B. Robinson. Its 18 holes are a great challenge for players of all levels. The other two courses found in Sotogrande belong to the San Roque Club. The Old Course dates back to 1990 and is the work of Dave Thomas, whilst the New Course, constructed in 2003, was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and Perry Dye. The golfing experience that this town has to offer can be rounded off with the two courses of Alcaidesa – The Link and the Heathland – and that of La Cañada, in Guadiaro. On the 2nd day of the month the Periódico de Sotogrande Tournament kicks off in the format of 2-person best ball. Next in line are the tournaments of Almenara Classic on the 6th; Punta del Este on the 10th; Eulen, the 13th; Cruzcampo, the 16th; Topgel, the 23rd; and Srixon Golf, on the 29th of August. All said tournaments are to be played in the Individual Stableford format and prices range between 60 and 65 euros. Así de simple, rotundo y sincero se muestra Iñaki Alonso, gerente de Varadero Sotogrande, entidad encargada de la reparación y mantenimiento de las embarcaciones que acuden a Puerto Sotogrande durante todo el año. Desde 2012, Gestión de Varaderos del Sur es la empresa responsable de éste área y, en este tiempo, no son pocos los frutos que han recogido desde que iniciaron su periplo en el puerto, en junio de 2012 De hecho, el año 2013 lo cerraron con más de 800 reparacaciones realizadas en sus instalaciones, una superficie de 8.000 metros cuadrados con un travel lift (grúa para la varada y botadura de las embarcaciones) capaz de manejar barcos de hasta 37 metros de eslora y 250 toneladas de peso. Es, según cuenta Iñaki Alonso, la joya de la corona, pues esto le permite reparar grandes naves. “No existen instalaciones como éstas, por ejemplo, en

de vidrio, además de trabajos mecánicos en los motores o en los ejes de las hélices. Estas tareas ocupan a la mayoría de los empleados destinados a la reparación y mantenimiento de las naves. En la zona donde se realizan es-
tos trabajos se respira un ambiente tranquilo, pero no exento de responsabilidades. Sobre todo cuando se trata de devolver grandes embarcaciones al agua; de trabajar al milímetro con la travel lift para que la nave no sufra ningún daño.
Consideran que su éxito está basado en la conexión entre los clientes y la empresa Varadero Sotogrande tiene muy claro que la experiencia y la percepción de sus clientes es tan importante como el resultado final. Defienden que el éxito se basa en la conexión leal entre sus clientes y la empresa. “Nos esforzamos no sólo por

Y aunque como dicen los datos, los resultados hasta el momento están siendo buenos, su gerente desea que en los próximos años mejoren tanto la facturación como los servicios que actualmente presta Varadero Sotogrande. En esa línea trabaja todo su equipo, un buen grupo de ingenieros. “Una de las gestiones que llevamos a cabo es el contacto con los capitanes. Cuando hablamos de barcos de más de 20 metros de eslora, son ellos los que establecen línea directa con nosotros. Y es que cuando se trata de grandes embarcaciones nunca tenemos oportunidad de conocer a los dueños”, declara Iñaki Alonso. Con ese fin acuden a los salones náuticos, donde dan a conocer sus servicios y prestaciones; y se muestran convencidos de ofrecer unas muy buenas instalaciones.

Las naves de invernaje, con capacidad para 120 barcos, ocupadas al completo y.o. /sotogrande.- Las dos naves de almacenaje de que dispone Varadero Sotogrande, con capacidad para un total de 120 barcos, mantienen actualmente una ocupación del 100 por cien. Estas instalaciones, que forman parte del abanico de servicios de la empresa, pueden albergar barcos de hasta 12 metros de eslora. Éste es, quizás, el trabajo más completo que realiza la empresa afincada en Sotogrande, puesto que el servicio de invernaje incluye también el mantenimiento de los barcos, algunos de los cuales solo se utilizan 15 días al año. “Cuando termina la temporada, los limpiamos bien, los dejamos muy bien preparados y los guardamos en las naves. Puede que sus propietarios no vuelvan a necesitarlos en siete u ocho meses”, cuenta Iñaki Alonso, gerente de Varadero Sotogrande. La mayoría de los clientes que mantienen sus naves en la zona de invernaje son clientes de fuera. “Actualmente, y aunque atendemos a todo el mundo, podemos permitirnos el lujo de seleccionar a nuestros clientes. Como empresa, nos interesa mucho asumir el mantenimiento de las embarcaciones. De hecho hay gente que nos dice, guárdame el barco y prepáramelo para que el 15 de junio del próximo año pueda volver a cogerlo. Este es el mejor servicio que podemos prestar”, añade el gerente. Àdemás de la nave de invernaje, la empresa dispone de otras dos explanadas destinadas al mantenimiento de barcos en el exterior, pero no están siendo explotadas. Ahora, durante el verano, el trabajo se centra en embarcaciones más pequeñas; y durante el invierno se dedican a la reparación y mantenimien-

to de los grandes yates. “Estamos atendiendo a todo el mundo, aunque no hay retrasos ni negativas, tampoco tenemos lista de espera”, declara Alonso. Tanto él como el resto del equipo que trabaja más directamente en la gestión del varadero son ingenieros de Caminos procedentes del sector de la construcción. “Hemos tenido que aprender todo lo que sabemos hoy, y para eso siempre hemos contado con la ayuda y la colaboración de la gente que sabe”,
“Hay barcos que guardamos en las naves de invernaje que solo se utilizan quince días al año” manifiesta. Ahora, después de conocer el mundo de la náutica, es difícil volver al de la construcción. “Al fin y al cabo, añade, somos ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos”. En la actualidad, son casi una vein-
tena de trabajadores los necesarios para la gestión del varadero. Algunos de ellos, sobre todo los más especialistas, han sido fichados en otros puertos. “También subcontratamos algunos servicios procedentes de empresas de la Costa del Sol donde ya tienen una larga experiencia”, explica el gerente. Pero además del trabajo específico del varadero, la empresa Gestión de Varaderos del Sur está promoviendo citas y acontecimientos deportivos como el celebrado el pasado mes de ju-
nio: la RC44 Copa Sotogrande. Ésta fue todo un éxito de participación y público. Desde su lanzamiento en 2007, el Tour Championship RC44 se ha establecido como una serie clave para competir en el circuito de regatas internacional. Aunque es una de las clases más competitivas en el circuito internacional de vela, la clase RC44 es también una de los más amables y acogedoras. Y así pudo verse durante los días que duró la competición.
Reparar La Grace, un orgullo para la empresa

Y.O./SOTOGRANDE.- Uno de los trabajos que más orgullo ha reportado a Varadero Sotogrande ha sido, sin duda, la reparación del bergantín checo La Grace, que naufragó al embarrancar en la playa de El Cable, frente al puerto de La Bajadilla, en octubre de 2012. Al deterioro del barco se unía la gran cantidad de agua y arena que encontraron en el interior. Fueron necesarias horas de trabajo y esfuerzo para lentamente ir izando la embarca-
ción mientras se extraía el material. La complicada obra de carpintería, realizada por uno de los mejores profesionales del país, supo dar la curvatura necesaria a cada tabla para adaptarlas adecuadamente al casco del barco. Las manos expertas del calafate permitieron concluir con éxito las alfaquías en el forro de la obra viva del bergantín. Una vez finalizada la reconstrucción, en agosto de 2013, La Grace estaba preparada de para navegar.

In fact, the deal was sealed in 2013 when they carried out more than 800 repairs at their facilities. When we are dealing with boats that are more than 20 metres long, it is the Captains who establish the direct line of work with us, so when working with these grand vessels we don’t get the chance to meet the owners” Iñaki Alonso indicates. For this purpose, the team regularly attends Boat Shows in order to spread the word about their services and their excellent facilities.

Storage warehouses with the capacity for 120 boats are completely full y.o. / sotogrande .- Varadero Sotogrande´s two storage warehouses, offering a total capacity for 120 boats, are currently occupied at a rate of 100 percent. These facilities, just one of the many services offered by the Company, may house boats up to 12 metres in length. This is perhaps one of the most comprehensive services offered by the Company located in Sotogrande, given that their storage service also includes boat maintenance for stored vessels, some of which are only used 15 days out of the whole year. “When the season comes to an end, we clean the boats thoroughly, leaving them ready to use, and store them in the warehouses. More often than not the boat owners don´t need them for another seven or eight months” Iñaki Alonso, Manager Varadero Sotogrande, explains. The majority of the customers that leave their boats with us in storage are not from this area. “At the moment, even though we offer our services to all, we can permit ourselves the luxury of selecting our clientele. As a Company, assuming the maintenance of a boat is something that we are interested in. In fact some owners say; store the boat all year and have it ready for me on the 15th of June next year so I can pick it up. This is one of the best services we can provide” the Manager adds. In addition to the storage warehouse, the Company has two esplanades for the maintenance of boats outdoors, however they are currently not in use. Now, in the summer months, their work revolves around smaller boats; and during the winter the Company dedicates nearly all their time to the repair and maintenance of large yachts. “We provide services

for all, and even though there are no delays or losses, we don´t have a queue of people at our door” declares Antonio. Both Antonio and the rest of the team who work directly on the management of the boatyard are Civil Engineers with experience in the construction sector. “All the knowledge we possess today, we learnt thanks to the help and support of people with specialist knowledge” he states. Now, after becoming im-

However, in addition to the specific nature of the work in the boatyard, the company Gestión de Varaderos del Sur
is endorsing sporting events, such as the RC44 Sotogrande Cup held in June, which was a complete success. Since its launch in 2007, the RC44 Championship Tour has been established as a key series to compete in international circuits. Even though it is one of the most competitive classes in the international sailing circuits, the RC44 class has also proved to be one of the most pleasant and attractive tours.

Y. O. / SOTOGRANDE.- A job that has filled Varadero Sotogrande with endless pride is without a doubt, that of the repair of the Czech barkentine, La Grace. The boat was shipwrecked when it ran aground on the El Cable beach in front of La Bajadilla port in October 2012. In addition to the deterioration of the boat, it was filled with water and sand. Hours of work and effort went into the very slow raising process of the boat while the material within
was removed. The most complicated part was the carpentry, which was carried out by one of the country´s best professionals, with expertise knowledge to bend each piece of wood and to adapt them perfectly to the boat´s hull. The caulker´s skills ensured that the “alfaquías” on the boat casing complemented the living masterpiece of the barkentine. Once the reconstruction was completed in August 2013, la Grace was ready to set sail once again.

Escuela de vida náutica El Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande pone en marcha un programa de actividades durante todo el año para combatir la estacionalidad. El objetivo es que los vecinos se acerquen al mar y se formen divirtiéndose
E
l Real Club Marítimo Sotogrande (RCMS) está dando pasos importantes para convertirse en una auténtica escuela de vida náutica. Entre sus objetivos está el acercar el mar tanto a los socios como a los que no lo son. Para ello ha programado un amplio abanico de actividades, muchas de ellas enfocadas a los niños, para que aprendan divirtiéndose todo lo que rodea al deporte de la vela y al mismo tiempo puedan tener una salida profesional en el futuro. El RCMS, fundado en los años 90, cuenta actualmente con unos 400 socios. La entidad es consciente de la estacionalidad que rodea a Sotogrande y de que el grueso de la actividad en la zona se concentra en verano y, en concreto, en este mes de agosto. El RCMS está trabajando en revertir esta situación y para ello está desarrollando un amplio programa que abarca todos los meses del año. El responsable de Comunicación de la entidad, Javier Molina, explica que para la presente temporada 2014/2015 hay previstos más de 200 cursos con el fin de que este corazón del Puerto Deportivo siga latiendo una vez se despida la temporada estival veraniega. “La idea es que el club no se muera en invierno. Que los vecinos de la zona se acerquen al mar y participen de nuestras actividades todo el año”, señala el miembro de la junta directiva.

cios especiales para las actividades, que están abiertas para las personas que quieran realizarlas aunque no formen parte de la entidad.
Colaboración El RCMS tiene firmados acuerdos de colaboración con numerosas entidades y organismos de la zona. Desde el año pasado dan cursos para patrón de embarcación con Alavela. Asimismo, van de la mano con las escuelas municipales para que los niños no se limiten a practicar este deporte sólo en verano. El Ayuntamiento, Sotogrande S.A., Puerto Deportivo o la Escuela Internacional colaboran en la puesta en marcha de las actividades del club. “Sotogrande es muy estacional y queremos que esto cambie con la ayuda de todos. Estamos esperando a ver la aceptación que tiene el nuevo programa de actividades”, indica Molina, que calcula que más de 200 niños están participando ya de sus actividades en el club. Molina explica que el club tiene socios que no practican vela. De hecho, calcula que sólo unos 50 tienen barco propio. Por ello, por primera vez este año han organizado actividades al margen de la náutica. Así, han puesto en marcha bailes de salón, cursos de idiomas, talleres de pintura y fotografía, o cursos de pesca para niños. Nueva sede El RCMS inauguró hace alrededor de un año su nueva sede, en la playa de los catamaranes, que sustituyó a la antigua caseta de madera tras realizarse una inversión de unos 200.000 euros. Allí se realizan muchas de las actividades como los cursos de optimist, catamaranes o monotipos. El objetivo es que esta ampliación en la zona del contradique no cierre en todo el año para que sea la “sede cultural del ambiente náutico en Sotogrande”. En palabras de Molina, “lo más importante es que la gente nave-

gue. Que el salón social tenga vida todo el año gracias al aula multidisciplinar. Que los padres puedan estar en la playa y ver cómo sus hijos aprenden. Queremos organizar jornadas náuticas con la Universidad de Cádiz (UCA)”. El club también organiza eventos para empresas, organizando regatas para que los participantes se inicien en la vela o puedan realizar clinics para perfeccionar sus conocimientos.
Entidad El RCMS está presidido por Enrique Benjumea, que capitanea la actual junta directiva desde hace unos ocho años. La entidad tiene su sede central en la zona de La Marina del Puerto Deportivo. Este año, en otoño, está prevista la celebración de elecciones y la actual directiva tiene pensado presentarse a la reelección. Los socios pagan unos 250 euros al año en dos cuotas y cuentan con pre-
tualmente se está disputando la IV Liga de Verano con pruebas en julio y agosto. También hay regatas de optimist y catamaranes. Pero sin duda el evento del año es la XV Copa Sotogrande Rives, puntuable para el Campeonato de Andalucía de Cruceros ORC, que tendrá lugar del 15 al 17 de agosto. Molina calcula que unas 60 embarcaciones tomarán parte en esta prueba, que prevé una regata costera desde Sotogrande hasta Gibraltar. Esta prueba tiene una gran aceptación aunque su realización dependerá de las condiciones del tiempo. Futuro El RCMS tiene en mente desde hace años ampliar sus instalaciones de La Marina. Si bien se trata de un proyecto embrionario todavía, el gran objetivo es construir un club social con capacidad para embarcaciones ligeras y zonas donde poder guardar los materiales. Una ampliación que venga a consolidar el programa de actividades y los nuevos objetivos que se ha marcado la entidad de Sotogrande.

The Nautical Lifestyle The Royal Maritime Club of Sotogrande is launching an all year round activity programme to bring an end to seasonality. The Club´s main aim is to help local residents make the most of the sea in a fun and exciting way
T
he Royal Maritime Club of Sotogrande (RCMS) is coming on leaps and bounds in its mission to become school of the authentic nautical lifestyle. Amongst others, the Club´s main aim is to bring both members and non-members closer to the sea. In order to do so, the Club has a wide range of activities on offer. The majority of events are aimed at children and they focus on opening their eyes to the enjoyable world of sailing and encourage potential future professional sailors. The RCMS was founded in the 90s and currently has around 400 members. The association is aware of the seasonal nature of Sotogrande and the fact that the bulk of activities in the area take place only in Summer, namely, in the month of August. The RCMS is currently working on solutions to this problem and is in the process of organising an extensive leisure programme encompassing all months of the year. Javier Molina, the Club´s Communication Manager, explains that more than 200 courses are planned to go forward in the 2014/2015 season in the aim to keep this Sports Marina alive once we leave the summer months behind. “Our main priorities are to keep the Club alive throughout the winter and to help local residents make the most of the sea by getting involved in our yearround activities” explains a member of the Board of Directors. Collaboration Several companies and associations in the area have signed agreements with the RCMS to collaborate with them on this project. Skipper courses with Alavela have been running since last year. Likewise, these courses work hand in hand with the Municipal Schools ensuring that children have the chance to practice sport throughout the whole year. The Town Council, Sotogrande S.A, the Sports Marina and the International School have collaborated on the launch of these club activities. “Sotogrande is a seasonal destination and, with everyone´s help, we wish to change this. We are all eagerly awaiting the approval of this new programme of activities” says Molina, who estimates that more than 200 children are currently taking part in the Club´s activities.

Molina also points out that many members of the club are not sailors. In fact, he calculates that only 50 possess their own boat. Therefore, this year for the first time ever, the club has organised activities outside of the world of nautics. Amongst which are ballroom dancing, language courses, painting and photography workshops and children´s fishing courses. New Clubhouse About a year ago after a 200,000 euro investment, the RCMS opened their new club house on Catamaran Beach in place of their old wooden club house. Many of the activities are held there, such as the optimist, catamaran and one-design courses. The main aim of the new counter-dam facilities is offer all year-round services, thus “converting Sotogrande into the cultural hub of the nautical world”. In the words of Molina, “the most important thing is that people sail; that the clubhouse is brimming with life all year thanks to the multi-purpose room
and that parents can watch their children learn at the beach. We would also like to arrange a nautical open day with the University of Cadiz (UCA).” The Club also runs events for companies, organising regattas so sailing beginners can learn the ropes, or for experienced sailors to perfect their skills. The Association Enrique Benjumea is the chairman of the RCMS, and has led the Board of Directors for over eight years. The central base of the company can be found at the Sports Marina. Elections are set to be held this year in the Autumn and the current president plans to re-run for his position. Members pay approximately 250 euros a year in two instalments and are offered special prices for activities which are available to everyone, even non-members. The Rives Cup The RCMS fleet is mainly formed by Tom28Max boats and is currently com-
peting in the IV Summer League with trials in the months of July and August. There are also optimist and catamaran regattas. Yet without a doubt, the event of the year is the XV Sotogrande Rives Cup, which counts towards the Andalusian Cruiser Championships ORC, set to take place from the 15th -17th August. Molina calculates that around 60 boats shall compete in these trials that consist of a coastal regatta from Sotogrande to Gibraltar. This trial has been enthusiastically embraced by all, yet whether or not it shall take place shall be weather permitting.. The Future For several years, RCMS has planned to expand its Marina installations. Even though the project is still in its early stages, the main objective is to build a social club that is able to hold light vessels with storage areas for materials. The expansion reinforces the activity programme and the new objectives that the Sotogrande association has set..

La cocina para ser feliz Pepe Rodríguez, jurado de Master Chef, ofrece una clase a un público entregado con el cocinero de El Bohío en la sede del Santa María Polo Club. Es el responsable de la carta de Palenque, el restaurante que este año se ha levantado en la zona de entrecanchas y que permanecerá abierto hasta el fin del torneo
S
i tuviera que explicarles cómo es en persona Pepe Rodríguez, jurado de Master Chef, no tendría mucho que decirles. Es tal como lo ven en la pantalla de su televisor. Sin más trampa ni cartón: cercano y humilde, como persona y como cocinero. Pero si al Pepe Rodríguez que vemos en el concurso le quitamos su papel de juez, nos encontramos con un hombre divertido, amable y bromista. Ésta es, seguro, la impresión que se llevaron de él los asistentes a la Master Class que el propietario de El Bohío ofreció en la sede del Santa María Polo Club, donde está ubicado Palenque, restaurante de la empresa Sodexo Prestige y del que Rodríguez es chef ejecutivo. En un ambiente distendido y cordial, y ayudado por su jefe de cocina Edwin Rodríguez, el jurado de Master Chef preparó tres tapas: tartar de atún, ceviche de lubina y ensalada de pato. Cada una de ellas fue anotada y apuntada por los asistentes a medida que el chef iba relatando cómo tratar el producto y qué ingredientes debían acompañarlo. “Como ven, aquí no hay secretos”, bromeó. Quienes acudieron a esta afortunada demostración se encontraron con un profesional amante de la buena cocina; que cuida el producto, que le gusta ofrecer calidad pero sin demasiadas ortodoxias. “Hay mucha literatura sobre cocina, sobre qué debemos comer, cuándo y cómo. Pero no hagan mucho caso. Lo único que hay que perseguir cocinando o comiendo es ser feliz. Una vez tengan claro esto, pueden hacer lo que quieran”, manifestó a un público muy entregado, que lo fotografió cientos de veces, le preguntó por su restaurante de Illescas, en Toledo; e intercambió impresiones acerca del concurso del que es jurado, la calidad de los aspirantes, audiencias... y un largo etcétera. Antes de la Master Class, atendió a la prensa en Palenque, el restaurante que se ha levantado en entrecanchas. Según contó Rodríguez, la carta que ha preparado como chef ejecutivo está repleta de productos de la zona, y confeccionada pensando en las tradiciones y el clima del lugar en el que se ha instalado este restaurante pop-up inspirado en los porches y terrazas mediterrános.

Mercadillos, improvisadas galerías comerciales El Puerto Deportivo reúne este verano un total de tres mercados al aire libre distintos. Al tradicional de los domingos se unen otro de artesanía y artículos de segundo mano, y un tercero que tiene lugar de noche

res mercadillos distintos se dan cita este verano en el Puerto Deportivo de Sotogrande. Al tradicional de los domingos se han sumado como novedad este verano el mercadillo nocturno, que se celebrará todos los miércoles y jueves desde las siete de la tarde; y el denominado mercadillo Vintage, una nueva propuesta que podrá ser visitada todos los miércoles en la explanada del parking del Real Club Marítimo. Artesanía y objetos de segunda mano llenarán los expositores de este nuevo mercado que comienza a las diez de la mañana y concluye a las cuatro de la tarde. Por tanto, puerto deportivo y oferta comercial son sinónimos este mes de agosto. Y es que hasta aquellos o aquellas que son más reacios a las compras no podrán resistirse a pasear por estas curiosas galerías comerciales que se levantan cada semana para ofrecer al público diferentes productos. Y si no, fijémonos en el que más tradición y veteranía conserva: el mercadillo de los domingos. La mayoría de los puestos que allí se encuentran están dedicados a la venta de ropa, productos textiles, decoración, complementos o bisutería. Pero el visitante también podrá hallar productos de alimentación, obras de arte, o antigüedades. Adentrarse en este mercado al aire libre es compartir improvisados probadores, escuchar conversaciones en diferentes idiomas y, si se pone bien el oído, asistir a interesantes debates acerca de aficiones futbolísticas e ídolos del balompié. Conditions of contract Therefore this month of August, our Marina shall be become a true Shopping Arcade. Even those amongst us who are the most reluctant to go shopping cannot resist taking a peak at what these unusual shopping arcades have to offer, with a wide range of products for all members of the public. And otherwise, we must focus on the tradition and heritage that these flea markets conserve. The majority of the stalls found at these markets are dedicated to the sale of clothes, materials, ornaments, accessories or jewellery.

The majority of the stall owners which open for business every Sunday at the Marina come from across the entire Costa del Sol. Despite the fact some of them own their own stores, they would not miss this summer market for the world. However in the colder months, the journey to Sotogrande does not offer huge incentives.
Nevertheless, sometimes the owners must come to comply with the terms and conditions of their contract. “If we don´t come, we lose our stall and there are a lot of people waiting to take our place” comment the sellers. El ronqueo, atractivo de la segunda jornada de la Feria del Atún Ayuntamiento y Puerto Sotogrande organizan una muestra gastronómica durante todo este fin de semana Y.O. SOTOGRANDE.- La Feria del Atún tiene hoy, en el ronqueo, el principal atractivo del programa preparado para el sábado. El Ayuntamiento de San Roque y Puerto Sotogrande han organizado esta feria en la que tanto organizadores como establecimientos implicados han puesto mucha ilusión, esfuerzo e interés por conseguir que esta cita se convierta en parada obligada cada verano en el puerto deportivo de Sotogrande. La Feria del Atún permanecerá abierta hasta el domingo 3 de agosto de 12.00 a 01.00 ho-
ras de manera interrumpida. Cada uno de los restaurantes implicados ofrecerá tres tapas a quienes visiten la feria. Una de ellas, deberá ser obligatoriamente de atún. Cada tapa con bebida se cobrará a 3,50 euros. La jornada inaugural estuvo amenizada por la actuación de la banda New Orleans. Fueron los componentes de este grupo quienes abrieron el programa lúdico que los responsables de la feria han preparado; y que sigue hoy con el ronqueo y una degustación de salazones acompañada de venenciador. La agenda de actividades concluirá esta noche, a las
22.00 horas, con la actuación del grupo Al Son del Sur. Además, hay un carrusel ecológico, una ludoteca, y la disponibilidad de El Vaporetto para trasladar a los visitantes dando un paseo en barco hasta la zona de la torre de control, donde se han instalado las diferentes carpas en las que los restaurantes ofrecen sus mejores propuestas. Los establecimientos implicados son Bodegas Collado, Cafetería Okay, Herpac, S.L., que actúa también como patrocinador, y los restaurantes Midas, Mara, La Barrica, Milla de Plata, El Copo, Grupo Almazara, Moncayo y Tangos.

O. / sotogrande.- This weekend, the Town Council of San Roque and Puerto Sotogrande have organised the very first ‘Feria del Atún’ (Tuna Gastronomy Fair), consisting of three open days dedicated to gastronomy. The time and effort dedicated to the fair by the organisers shall guarantee that this brand new event becomes the first stop for all summer visitors of the Sotogrande Marina. The ‘Feria del Atún’ opens to the public the first, second and third of August, from 12.00 to 01.00 with no breaks. Each of
the restaurants involved shall offer a total of three “tapas” to all those who visit the fair. One of which shall of course be a Tuna dish. Each tapa with a drink shall cost 3.50 euros. The band New Orleans was scheduled to play at the opening event at 2pm. The members of this group launched the recreational programme organised by the Feria, which shall continue on Saturday the second of August with a fish filleting and salted fish tasting session and a professional wine pourer. The activity programme shall
come to a close on Saturday evening at 22:00, with a performance by the group Al Son del Sur. In addition, visitors may enjoy the environmentally friendly carrousel, a children´s playroom and a Vaporetto ride to the control tower, where the restaurants shall set up various marquees to offer their finest dishes. The establishments taking part are Bodegas Collado, Cafetería Okay, Herpac, S.L. Los romanos de Baelo ya iban de tapas y se relajaban en el Spa Y.O. SOTOGRANDE.- “Oye, esta tarde voy al Salus Per Aqua, pero luego podemos quedar en el Termopolium, ¿te parece?”. Decir esto, y esto otro: “Oye, esta tarde voy al Spa, pero luego podemos quedar en el bar de tapas, te parece?”, es exactamente lo mismo solo que entre una conversación y otra han pasado más de dos mil años. Y es que en Baelo Claudia, la ciudad enclavada en la ensenada de Bolonia desde el año 27 antes de Cristo, sus habitantes ya pasaban su tiempo de ocio y diversión de la misma manera que hoy lo disfrutamos, en pleno siglo XXI: acudiendo a un spa y quedando en un bar de tapas para tomar algo. Estos secretos y muchos otros nos han contado el matrimonio formado por Plotia Séptima y Marcus Sempronius, dos distinguidos romanos que nos recibieron en la ciudad de Baelo para hablarnos de cómo eran la vida y costumbres de los romanos de la época. Gracias a ellos pudimos saber quiénes formaban la fami-

En este tiempo, sus participantes conocen de cerca cómo se vestían los romanos; cómo son algunos de los utensilios que usaban en su vida diaria; las monedas, o la tablilla de cera, el único lugar donde se podían permitir escribir o anotar sus asuntos. Para
leer, recurrían al papiro o al pergamino, pero estos eran materiales muy costosos y estaban reservados a las familias más pudientes. La agenda del Conjunto Arqueológico para los meses de julio y agosto continúa con visitas guiadas amenizadas,
visitas teatralizadas, talleres didácticos para familias, una exposición, un concierto de la Orquesta Sinfónica Amigos de la Música de Algeciras y el festival de teatros romanos, que llevará hasta Bolonia cuatro funciones teatrales distintas.

Aunque desayunaban muy poco, apenas un trozo de queso, pan o higos secos; al mediodía disfrutaban de algún aperitivo, que consumían al momento en las barras de los Termopolium; para luego dar paso a la gran ceremonia en el Triclinium. Este era el lugar donde, tumbados del lado izquierdo, y con la mano derecha, daban cuenta de los suculentos manjares que, como correspondía a las distinguidas familias romanas, les servían los mejores esclavos de la casa. El tiempo de ocio lo pasaban en los teatros, las termas, el termopolium, los foros, los mercados o, en los hoy modernos Spa, que servían de distracción a los ciudadanos de Baelo, un municipio pequeño, que llegó a albergar a unos 1.500 habitantes, pero que hoy es visitado por más de XXX turistas de todo el mundo al año.

Despite the two thousand year difference, these two conversations are exactly the same. The residents of Baelo Claudia, a city nestled in the cove of Bolonia dating back to 27 BC, would spend their free time in exactly the same way as we do today in the twenty-first century; that is to say relaxing in a spa and meeting our friends for a meal of “tapas” in the evening. The disclosure of these secrets and many more has also brought to light the marriage of Plotia Séptima and Marcus Sempronius, two distinguished Romans who welcomed us into the city of Baelo to tell us more about their life and the Roman traditions of the era. Thanks to them, we have learnt about the structure of a Roman family, which was formed by not only the parents and children, but also other relatives and slaves; their daily personal hygiene routine and the function the Ornatrix in the case of women, and the Tonsor in the case of men, who served as their Barber. In accordance with what this peculiar couple have told us, the residents of Baelo, as they all professed to be good Romans, were very pretentious individuals. Some men even went so far as to pluck their beards with tweezers or remove their facial hair with poultice, which is as painful as using hot wax. Romans are not famous for their personal hygiene and made their slaves spit fragrances on their body when they wanted to be sprayed with perfume. Food was another very im-
