R. M. SOTOGRANDE.- La final soñada para el mejor torneo internacional de la historia de Sotogrande. Valiente y Ellerston se enfrentarán este sábado 30 de agosto en la cancha de Los Pinos por la Copa de Oro Bulgari de alto handicap. El equipo invicto hasta el momento, que aspira a la Triple Corona en Santa María Polo Club, frente al defensor del título del año pasado. Sobre la cancha estarán tres de los jugadores top ten del mundo. No se puede pedir más. La suerte está echada y el espectáculo, servido. Valiente abrió las semifinales frente a RH, que se clasificó

para esta fase por la definición de penaltis. El equipo de Adolfo Cambiaso controló el encuentro en todo momento y se llevó el partido por un cómodo 16 a 10. El conjunto del patrón estadounidense Bob Jornayvaz empezó muy concentrado y a los pocos minutos del primer chukker ya vencía por 3 a 0. Valiente siempre estuvo por encima en el marcador; si bien, en la primera fase, RH supo recortar distancias y mantener la emoción. Una disputa que se desvaneció a partir del cuarto chukker, cuando los de Cambiaso abrieron brecha y sentenciaron el partido. Cambiaso sufrió un leve incidente al inicio del parti-

Este sábado se disputa la gran final de la Copa de Oro Bulgari de alto handicap con los dos mejores equipos hasta el momento: Valiente y Ellerston. Se espera un gran ambiente en la cancha de Los Pinos, así como la presencia de rostros conocidos. El encargado de entregar el trofeo al ganador de la final será el actor español Jordi Mollá, embajador del proyecto Save the Children-Bulgari. La recaudación de las entradas para ver el encuentro, a partir de las 18 horas, se destinará a fines solidarios. Asimismo, se prevé la presencia también en esta jornada final de Sarah Ferguson, Duquesa de York, habitual de los veranos de Sotogrande y de las grandes citas del deporte de la bocha. El Torneo Internacional Land Rover se despide tras más de un mes albergando el mejor polo del mundo.

King Power se plantó en el último chukker con una ventaja de un gol y parecía que podía saltar la sorpresa en Los Pinos. Fue entonces cuando apareció la figura de Facundo Pieres, que volteó el marcador con dos goles en el último suspiro. El primero tras una espectacular jugada sorteando a los rivales y, el último, tras una cabalgada sobre la bocina. Gonzalo Pieres, tras el partido, destacó la dificultad del

encuentro ante King Power. “El rival ha jugado bravísimo hasta el último chukker, donde iban uno arriba. Sabíamos que si cometíamos un error se nos iba el partido. Valiente and Ellerston will go face to face on Saturday 30th August on the Los Pinos field for the high handicap Bulgari Gold Cup. The undefeated team, aiming for the Triple Crown at the Santa Maria Polo Club, faces last year’s defending championships. Three of the world’s top ten players will be on the field. You couldn’t ask for more. The die is cast, so let the show begin. Valiente opened the semifinals against RH, who qualified for this stage in penalties. Adolfo Cambiaso’s team controlled the game throughout and took the match by a comfortable 16-10. The team by U.S. patron Bob Jornayvaz started out very focused and within a few minutes of the first chukker had already scored 3-0. Valiente was always on top of the scoreboard; even though, in the first stage, RH knew how to close the gap and keep the excitement going. The fight however, disappeared from sight following the fourth chukker, when Cambiaso’s team widened the gap and sealed the game. by an opponent’s horse, which caused the game to be stopped for several minutes. In the end, it was nothing more than a scare. The best player in the world, upon finishing the match, underlined the great game played by his team members Santi Laborde and Santi Torres, who are performing brilliantly in the tournament. After lifting the Bronze and Silver Cups, the Valiente team now aims to complete a perfect run in the Land Rover International Tournament. For their part, RH tried to keep their heads down throughout the match, but nothing

The first, after a fantastic move avoiding his rivals, and than the second, after a long sprint at full time. After the match, Gonzalo Pieres spoke about the difficulty of the match against King Power. “Our opponents played fantastically until the final chukker, where they were one up. We knew that we had made a mistake and we were losing the match. Luckily, we were able to tie and take the win”, said Pieres. The Ellerston player also spoke about the final against Valiente, the only team to have beaten them in Sotogrande in the semi-finals of the Silver Cup. “Up against Valiente again. The 43 Land Rover International Polo Tournament reaches the final day at the premises of Santa Maria Polo Club. This Saturday the final of the Bulgari Gold Cup of high handicap dispute with the top two teams so far: Valiente and Ellerston. A great atmosphere in the court of Los Pinos, and the presence of familiar faces are expected. The charge of delivering the trophy to the winner of the final will be the Spanish actor Jordi Mollá, ambassador of the project Save the Children-Bulgari. It also provides for the presence of Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

• Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo LA VERDAD SOTOGRANDE.- Equus y FCT son los finalistas de la Copa de Oro Casablanca de mediano handicap tras ganar el pasado lunes día 25 sus respectivos encuentros de semifinales del 43 Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo que organiza Santa María Polo Club. El conjunto alemán de Equus, campeón de la Copa de Plata, venció a Woodchester por 16 a 11 en la primera semifinal del día, disputada en la cancha 2 del Río, y va en busca de su segundo trofeo de la temporada en Sotogrande. Delante tendrá a FCT, que venció a Seven Sevens por 8 a 7 en un encuentro muy disputado en la segunda semifinal. El equipo sueco llega con ésta a su segunda final este año en Santa María, después de que cayera en el partido decisivo de la Copa de Bronce contra Leones por 12 a 9. Equus se está mostrando como una formación muy sólida durante todo el torneo pero no lo tendrá nada fácil en la final de la Copa de Oro contra FCT. Muestra de ello es que el equipo alemán sólo ha perdido un encuentro en este Torneo Internacional Land Rover y fue precisamente en las semifinales de la Copa de Bronce ante FCT por 12 a 11. Asimismo, en las canchas de Puente de Hierro se disputaron las semifinales subsidiarias de la Copa de Oro de mediano handicap en las que se clasificaron para la final Mahra Esperanza y Lebeau Courally. El conjunto de Mahra Esperanza venció a St. Mesme por 11 a 9 al tiempo que Lebeu Courally hizo lo propio con Silex por 9 a 8 en el chukker suplementario. V. / Sotogrande.- Equus and FCT are the finalists for the Casablanca medium handicap Gold Cup after winning their respective semi-final matches of the 43rd Land Rover International Polo Tournament organised by the Santa Maria Polo Club, last Monday, the 25th. The German Equus team, champions of the Silver Cup, beat Woodchester by 16-11 in the first semi-final, played on Río field number 2, and goes in pursuit of their second trophy of the Sotogrande season. Facing them will be FCT, who beat Seven Sevens by 8-7 in a hotly contested match in the second semi-final. The Swedish team arrives with their victory at their second final this year in

Huntsman and Serdañola play the great final of the low handicap in Sotogrande Santa Maria, after losing in the decisive match of the Bronze Cup against Leones by 12-9. Equus has been demonstrating their very solid training throughout this whole tournament but it will be anything but easy in the final of the Gold Cup against FCT. Proof of this is that the German team have only lost one match in the Land Rover International Tournament in the semi-finals of the

Bronze Cup against FCT by 1211. Furthermore, on the Puente de Hierro fields, the subsidiary semi-finals of the Medium Handicap Gold Cup will be contested for which Mahra Esperanza and Lebeau Courally qualified. The Mahra Esperanza team beat St. Mesme by 11-9 while Lebeu Courally did the same against Silex by 9-8 in the additional chukker. Regarding the low handicap, Huntsman remains intractable and unstoppable going into the Triple Crown in Sotogrande. The team formed of Aristide Faggionato, Dillon Bacon, Felipe Gómez and Iván Maldonado remains undefeated in the tournament after reaching the final

of the Gold Cup and after already having taken the Silver and Bronze Cups. Huntsman disposed of Silex last Tuesday, the 26th, in the semi-finals by 1310, and only one match remains to finish a perfect tournament on the fields of Santa Maria. Their opponent will be Serdañola, who beat ValdeparrasMarqués de Torneros by 12-7.

a celebración de la Copa de Oro Bulgari no sólo atrae la mejor competición y los mejores jugadores del mundo sobre las canchas del Santa María Polo Club, sino que también genera un ambiente excepcional en la zona de entrecanchas y en el After Polo, donde se viven las fiestas de la temporada. Buena prueba de que el nivel también sube fuera del campo fue la convocatoria de YoDona, medio oficial del Torneo, y Bacardí, producto oficial del mismo, que ejercieron de anfitriones en la fiesta The Last Chukker con la actuación del show de Dj’s Les Castizos. Éstos atrajeron a cientos de invitados que no quisieron perderse la vuelta de esta singular pareja a una nueva edición del Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo. Polistas, residentes de Sotogrande e invitados de excepción se reunieron en una de las citas más multitudinarias de la agenda de fiestas en Grey Goose After Polo Sotogrande, el local de ocio nocturno de Santa María Polo Club. Además, durante toda la semana, los atardeceres en el polo han sido amenizados con la música de diferentes intérpretes y grupos musicales como Doctor 3, Los Intocables, Tony Crox, Los Singles o Sin Noticias de Gurb. El fin de fiesta tendrá lugar este sábado 30 de agosto con el gran DJ Show de Carlos Jean acompañado de Crox y Dan-One que han puesto música a las noches del polo durante toda la temporada. En los días previos a la final se han ido sucediendo actos como el celebrado en el jardín de entrada del pabellón principal de Los Pinos, que acogió el pasado miércoles por la noche la entrega de la IX Edición de los Premios al Polo Fuera de Serie que otorga Unidad Editorial. El galardón al mejor jugador de la temporada internacional de este año fue para el argentino Facundo Pieres, que recogió el trofeo tras finalizar el partido que metía a su equipo Ellerston en la final de la Copa de Oro de alto handicap. Asimismo, el premio al mejor jugador promesa recayó en Hugo Lewis, del conjunto Equus, finalista también en Sotogrande en mediano handicap; mientras que el galardón al mejor patrón fue para Robert Jornayvaz, de la organización Valiente, que aspira a la Triple Corona en Santa María Polo Club. La entrega de los trofeos Fuera de Serie registró un gran ambiente. En el acto estuvieron Ramón Mora-Figueroa, presidente de Santa María Polo Club; Luis Benjumea, director deportivo de la Real Federación Española de Polo; Pablo Mora-Figueroa, presidente de Casalbor Wines & Spirits; Iván Martínez, director de Fuera de Serie; Tania Martínez, de Unidad Editorial; Luis Estrada, vicepresidente de Santa María Polo Club; y Sebastián Amaya, de Polo Line. Tampoco quisieron perderse el acto Marcela Stirling, madre del jugador de Ayala David Stirling, o Louisa y Kaylelyn Jornayvaz.

Polo players, Sotogrande residents and special guests gathered in one of the biggest events of the party calendar in the Grey Goose After Polo Sotogrande, the Santa Maria Polo Club’s evening entertainment venue. Over the whole week, the evenings have been brightened up with music from a variety of performers and bands, such as Doctor 3, Los Intocables, Tony Crox, Los Singles and Sin Noticias de Gurb. The finale will take place on Saturday 30th August with the great DJ show from Carlos Jean accompanied by Crox and Dan-One who have been playing music in the evening to accompany the polo throughout the season.

Autoridades municipales les acompañaron en esta actividad, con la que se pretende proporcionar a los abuelos unos momentos especiales con los que salir de la rutina diaria. La alcaldesa accidental, Dolores Marchena; la concejal delegada de Bienestar Social, Ana María Rojas; el teniente de alcalde delegado del Valle del Guadiaro, Juan Roca; y la concejal de Bibliotecas, Pilar Núñez, charlaron con los abue-

los en la Cafetería Ké, en la que se les ofreció un desayuno antes de montarse en el barco. Eli Ramos, Asistente a Dirección, estuvo en representación de Puerto Sotogrande. La alcaldesa accidental recordó que “la pasada semana se dio este paseo en barco a los mayores de la Residencia de San Enrique, y quiero agradecer el patrocinio de las empresas Puerto Sotogrande, Cafetería Ké y Ongolf, para que estas actividades tan importantes para nuestros abuelos sean posibles”. “Los mayores disfrutan mucho de estas jornadas, que se suman al conjunto de actividades que a lo largo del año los trabajadores municipales de Bienestar Social y los empleados de Mensajeros de la Paz van programando para hacer más llevadero el día a día de los mayores de la Residencia: días de piscina, de visita a la playa de Guadarranque, de convivencias en el Pinar del Rey y, también, de paseos en barco como hoy. Todo lo que hagamos es poco”, manifestó Marchena. La alcaldesa accidental de San Roque, asimismo, resaltó “la labor fundamental de los trabajadores de la Residencia de Mayores y de las viviendas tuteladas para hacer posibles estas jornadas, sin olvidar el apoyo del personal de Bienestar Social y de Protección Civil, especializado en ayudar para la movilidad de los mayores”. “Sólo espero que los abuelos disfruten de esta jornada especial”, reiteró Marchena. Por su parte, el teniente de alcalde de zona, Juan Roca, destacó “el trabajo que realizan los voluntarios de Protección Civil, ayudando en todo momento a nuestro mayores a que disfruten con esta ilusión de montarse en un barco y dar este paseo por el puerto”. Entre las empresas que han colaborado en esta actividad se citan la Cafetería Ké, además del Puerto Deportivo y On Group, cuyos directivos coincidieron en señalar que supone un placer el hecho de ver cómo los abuelos disfrutan de este día. La directora de la Residencia de Mayores de la zona del casco, Manuela Pascual, manifestó que “los mayores estaban bastante ilusionados, puesto que se trataba de hacer algo que se sale de su rutina diaria, con un paseo en barco por todo el puerto”.

Un menor permanece estable tras atropellarle una lancha El niño, de 11 años, está ingresado en el Hospital Puerta del Mar, en Cádiz, donde está siendo atendido de las graves heridas que sufrió en las piernas LA VERDAD SOTOGRANDE.- Un menor de 11 años se mantiene estable en el hospital Puerta del Mar tras ser arrollado, este pasado miércoles, por una lancha mientras practicaba buceo en aguas próximas al puerto de Sotogrande. El menor, que pasaba aquí sus vacaciones junto a su familia, procedente de Sevilla, sufrió graves heridas en sus piernas. Aunque en un principio se temió que perdiera alguna de ellas, finalmente no fue así. Ahora, permanece estabilizado y evoluciona favorablemente mientras es atendido por el personal del centro hospitalario gaditano. Atención primera El accidente tuvo lugar a media tarde del miércoles en la zona del espigón, junto al faro. Al parecer, el menor estaba buceando sin señalización. Una lancha a gran velocidad lo atropelló causándole graves heridas en las piernas. Rápidamente fue sacado del agua y atendido por una persona que se encontraba allí y por socorristas de Protección Civil de San Roque. También se avisó a los servicios sanitarios, Salvamento Marítimo, Guardia Civil y Policía Local de San Roque. El niño fue atendido en el lugar donde se sucedieron los hechos durante al menos una hora. La pérdida de sangre que había sufrido llevó a los sanitarios a recuperarlo allí mismo para luego trasladarlo finalmente al Hospital Puerta del Mar de Cádiz. Aunque al principio se barajó la posibilidad de que fuera evacuado hasta el Hospital Militar de Sevilla, finalmente se optó por llevarlo hasta Cádiz. Sus padres fueron trasladados hasta el Puerta del Mar en una patrulla de la Guardia Civil. El servicio de Emergencias 112 informó de que también se movilizó a la Policía Local de la capital gaditana

Arte flamenco, nueva cita con la cultura en la Plaza de Los Naranjos L.V. / SOTOGRANDE.- La alcaldesa accidental y delegada de Cultura y Turismo, Dolores Marchena, ha presentado el contenido del espectáculo Arte flamenco, una nueva cita cultural que tendrá lugar el próximo seis de septiembre en la Plaza de los Naranjos. El presidente de la Asociación Cultural de Sotogrande, Adrian van Loon, y la subdirectora de Puerto Sotogrande, Eli Ramos, también estuvieron presentes. Arte Flamenco es una puesta en escena de Noelia Sabarea y su academia de baile, que estará acompañada por Manuel Peralta, el Cuco, y otros artistas. Además, también está previsto que actúen el Coro Ciudad de San Roque; y varios poetas y poetisas que leerán sus creaciones. Todo ello estará adornado con un desfile de moda flamenca de la mano de Confecciones Paquita, de La Línea. En la presentación, Marchena destacó el trabajo que desarrolla la Asociación Cultural de Sotogrande, y la colaboración que siempre aporta Puerto de Sotogrande. “Esta es un magnífica oportunidad de mostrar a nuestros visitantes nuestro arte, y estoy segura que la programación preparada para esa noche va a gustar mucho”, añadió la concejal. Adrian van Loon manifestó estar muy agradecido con la ayuda que aportan Puerto y Ayuntamiento para dinamizar la vida cultural de Sotogrande; y Eli Ramos, aunque destacó la dificultad que supone poder organizar estas actividades en época estival; señaló, sin embargo, que son actividades muy atractivas en las que están encantados de colaborar. La responsable de Puerto Sotogrande recordó las últimas actividades en las que tanto el Ayuntamiento como la entidad para la que trabaja han caminado de la mano como es el caso de la Feria del Atún; el descenso del Río Guadiaro; el triathlon, un cuentacuentos, la noche de poesía, las visitas de mayores, entre otros. Hace tan solo unos días, otro gran espectáculo se dio cita en la Plaza de Los Narajos con el Reino de las Musas, una performance donde un pianista puso la música al proceso creativo de un pintor. Su experiencia en este tipo de negocio les avala como especialistas. “Cuando un coche de este tipo se queda parado, hay que hacerle un mantenimiento quincenal. Es decir, tenemos que estar pendientes de las baterías, de los componentes electrónicos o de los depósitos de aceite. Aunque no circulen, tratándose de estos modelos, su cuidado es muy exigente”, añade Ventura, que lleva en el negocio más de 25 años. En su opinión, hacer uso de un servicio como el que ofrecen, garantiza al usuario o propietario de un vehículo de alta gama o un clásico, el mejor mantenimiento. Además, realizan todo tipo de reparaciones y restauraciones de clásicos. ¿Ý cuándo un coche pasa a la categoría de clásico? Ventura cuenta que como clásico se entiende aquel vehículo que

This is at least, the aim of those in charge of this establishment, and for three years has been offering storage and garaging services for high-end vehicles. Within their facilities, they have a warehouse that can accommodate a total of 50 vehicles; the perfect place for car storage and care. “We take care of everything here, from looking after vehicles throughout the whole year, or however long a client requires; to taking care of maintenance issues, organising Technical Vehicle Inspections (ITV) or any other administrative formalities; or even organise their transportation from any part if needed. We take care of absolutely everything to do with vehicles”, said Ventura Fernández, owner of SM Club Motor with Melanie Ledesma. The sector that they work with focuses mainly on high-end cars, like Ferraris, and classic cars. Their experience in this type of business supports them as specialists, “When a car of this type is left stationary, we have to perform fortnightly maintenance. We have to be aware of the batteries, the electronic components and the oil tanks. Although they are not being driven, when it comes to these models in particular, their care is very demanding” adds Ventura, who has been in the business for 25 years. In her opinion, using a service like theirs, ensures that a vehicle is in fully working order for drivers or owners of high-end or classical cars. So when does a car become a classic? Ventura says that a classic is any vehicle of more than 25 years old and, that that they are also the most soughtafter. “The most of people are looking, above all, for branded vehicles like Porshe and Mercedes. They are the most popular”, he says. The owner of SM Motor also talked about tastes by nationalities. As the resident population in the Sotogrande area is made up of mostly Brits and Germans, they are the most emblematic brands of those countries and the brands they love the most. Another area that the dealership is involved with, is the buying and selling of vehicles. “We sell and buy Ferraris, Masseratis, MacLarens, Aston Martins. But not here. We have clients that locate or want a special model locating, and we organise travel arrangements to wherever the car may be, handling all the paperwork for their transfer, and ensuring they obtain Spanish registration plates,” adds Ventura Fernández. She adds that the exclusive pieces are the most valued by clients, and also the hardest to get hold of. The combined experience of Ventura Fernández and Melaine Ledesma has put at the forefront of the field. The economic crisis has now led them to diversifying their business, and adding new services, such as vehicle storage, to those already in place. “Doing many things it is since we go out forward”, adds the owner of SM Club Motor.

La cultura como puente de unión entre distintas nacionalidades La Asociación Cultural Sotogrande, creada en 2002, trabaja desde hace más de diez años para elaborar una oferta que se adapte a todos los gustos y culturas de los residentes de la urbanización

maginen un lugar donde conviven personas de diferentes culturas y nacionalidades. Ahora, intenten ofrecerles una programación cultural que guste a todos. Pues ese es el trabajo que realiza la Asociación Cultural de Sotogrande desde que se fundó, allá por 2002. Adrian van Loon, presidente del colectivo, explica cómo surgió todo. “Esto empezó en una charla con un amigo, en la que hablábamos de la calidad de vida de Sotogrande y de la oferta deportiva de lujo que entonces, y todavía hoy, pone al servicio de sus residentes y visitantes. Sin embargo, ambos coincidíamos en que había otras necesidades que no estaban cubiertas y que una de ellas era la ausencia de un programa cultural. Y lo que se inició como una charla entre dos se fue convirtiendo, con el paso de las semanas, en reuniones de 40 personas”, cuenta el presidente. Los principios, como todos, fueron difíciles. La primera dificultad que se les presentó fue la del idioma, claro. “Aquello era una torre de Babel, pero al final nos entendimos siendo conscientes de que lo que nos unía era el afán y el deseo de iniciar un camino de integración que todavía hoy seguimos recorriendo”, explica Van Loon. Creada como un colectivo sin ánimo de lucro, la Asociación Cultural de Sotogrande echó a andar con un buen grupo de socios, ahora mucho más reducido, y con el establecimiento de cuotas para el desarrollo de las actividades culturales. Ahora, su presupuesto se nutre de donaciones particulares y de las aportaciones procedentes de la Entidad Urbanística de Conservación, y del despa-

ejos de atender a la leyenda de El holandés errante, aquel barco que según contaban estaba condenado a vagar por el mundo, Adrian van Loon, también de origen holandés, tuvo muy claro, desde que llegara por primera vez a Sotogrande, hace ya casi 30 años, que había encontrado el lugar ideal para abandonar su finca del campo holandés. Dedicado al marketing internacional, el presidente de la Asociación Cultural de Sotogrande estuvo ligado en su carrera profesional a instituciones que tenían y tienen como objetivo fomentar las buenas relaciones entre España y Holanda. “Viajaba mucho, y cuando venía a España solía quedarme en Madrid, y aunque me gustaba como ciudad, no quería vivir allí. Cuando llegué a Sotogrande me di cuenta de que era el momento de dejar mi país”, explica. Van Loon es residente de la urbanización desde hace 25 años y en todo ese tiempo se ha convertido en un enamorado de Andalucía. Dice sentirse ‘holandaluz’, un curioso gentilicio con el que quiere poner de manifiesto que, siendo holandés, ama a Andalucía como si fuera su propio país. cho de abogados Hassans; que son sus dos principales patrocinadores, independientemente de que para actos puntuales surjan otras colaboraciones. El

programa cultural de la asociación destaca por la organización, al año, de tres o cuatro grandes citas musicales. “Algunos dicen que nos hemos convertido en

asociación musical, pero es que nos hemos dado cuenta de que la música une a todos por igual, sin importar el idioma que hablen”, señaló Van Loon.

Ahora se confiesa un enamorado de Andalucía, a la que considera su propio país nales, y en unos semanas, el próximo seis de septiembre, vivirá uno de sus días más importantes porque por fin podrá cumplir su deseo de llevar un espectáculo flamenco a Sotogrande. Éste será uno de los grandes logros de este verano, una estación en la que la programación no se ve alterada por el mayor número de visitantes. “Para los

que residimos en Sotogrande, la mejor época del año comienza en la segunda quincena de septiembre. Y esto lo debe entender todo el mundo porque los que vivimos en la urbanización, la elegimos porque nos gusta la tranquilidad de la que disfrutamos aquí”, señala Van Loon. Un enamorado de Andalucía, un apasionado de Sotogrande, y un hombre

convencido de que la sociedad necesita un equilibrio, y ese equilibrio lo proporciona la cultura. Entre sus sueños está poder recuperar algún festival que fue arrastrado por la crisis; crear otro dedicado al cine y, por supuesto, levantar un centro cultural que se convierta en el punto de encuentro y enriquecimiento de todos sus residentes.

magine a place where people of different cultures and nationalities lived together. Now, try to offer them cultural activities that suites everyone. Well that has been the job of the Sotogrande Cultural Association since it was founded back in 2002. Adrian van Loon, president of the association, explains how it all started. “It started with a conversation with a friend, where we were talking about the quality of life in Sotogrande and the provision of luxury sports that was, and is still available for residents and visitors. However, we both agreed that there were other things that were needed but were not covered, one of them being a lack of cultural activities. And so what began as a chat between two people, gradually turned into, over several weeks, meetings with 40 people”, says the president. At first, like everything, things were difficult. The first difficulty that came about was the language, of course. “That was a tower of Babel, but in the end we understood each other and well aware of what united us: an eagerness and desire to start a journey towards integration that even today we are still travelling on” explains Van Loon. Founded as a non-

profit group, the Sotogrande Cultural Association started with a good group of members, now much reduced, and with the establishment of quotas for the development of cultural activities. Now, its budget is nourished by private donations and contributions from the Urban Conservation Authority, and from the law firm Hassans; which are its two

The cultural programme of the association is noted for its organisation of three or four large musical events every year. “Some say that we have become a musical association, but what we have realised is that music unites us all as equals, no matter what language we may speak”, said Van Loon.

nstead of adhering to the legend of the Flying Dutchman, the boat that according to legend was doomed to wander the world, Adrian van Loon, also of Dutch origin, had no doubts, since arriving for the first time in Sotogrande almost 30 years ago, that he had found the ideal place to abandon his home in the Dutch countryside.

Devoted to international marketing, the president of the Sotogrande Cultural Association was linked in his career to institutions that had and still have as their aim, to foster good relations between Spain and the Netherlands. “I travelled lots, and when I came to Spain I used to stay in Madrid, and although I liked the city, I did not want to live the-

Van Loon has been a resident of the area for 25 years and in that time has fallen in love with Andalusia. He says he feels “holandalusian”, a curious adjective that demonstrates, that although being Dutch, you love Andalusia

as if it were your own country. He came across flamenco at a young age, due to personal circumstances, and in a few weeks time, the sixth of September, he will live one of the most important days of his life, because finally he’ll be able to fulfil his wish of bringing a flamenco show to Sotogrande. This will be one of the greatest achievements of this summer, a season in which the various cultural activities have not changed because of the increasing numbers of visitors, “For those who reside in Sotogrande, the best time of the year begins in the second half of September. And everyone should understand this, because those who live in the area, chose it because they like and enjoy the peace and quiet”, said Van Loon. A lover of Andalusia, a fan of Sotogrande, and a man convinced that society needs a balance, and this balance is created by culture. One of his dreams is to recover a festival that was swept away by the economic crisis; to create another festival dedicated to cinema and, of course, to build a cultural centre that will become the meeting and enrichment point for the residents of the area.

La historia y su riqueza natural, atractivos turísticos de Gibraltar El Peñón recibe cada año en torno a nueve millones de turistas. Las Cuevas de San Miguel, los túneles del Gran Asedio, el macaco gibraltareño y su oferta comercial son los principales destinos Y. O. SOTOGRANDE.- Visitar Gibraltar es uno de los mayores atractivos turísticos que tiene el Campo de Gibraltar. El Peñon o la Roca, como se le conoce popularmente, atrae cada año a nueve millones de turistas, lo que lo convierte, a pesar de sus reducidas dimensiones, solo ocho kilómetros, en uno de los lugares más visitados por quienes eligen la zona para pasar sus vacaciones. La historia que pesa sobre Gibraltar, su privilegiada situación geográfica y su riqueza natural dan contenido a una oferta turística que tiene sus principales puntos fuertes en los conocidos como Túneles del Gran Asedio, la Cueva de San Miguel, los túneles de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, o la Punta de Europa, desde donde pueden divisarse las costas españolas y marroquíes, entre otros reclamos. No hay que olvidar al famoso macaco gibraltareño, que vive en la reserva natural, y que provoca la curiosidad e interés del que se acerca al Peñón; o la oferta comercial de Main Street, que recrea el típico ambiente del shopping británico. Pero si de lo que se trata es de refugiarse en la historia, la visita a los Túneles del Gran Asedio es casi obligada. Un complejo laberinto de túneles que se construyó como sistema de defensa para hacer frente a las tropas extranjeras. Comenzó a idearse en 1782 y su buen estado actual y las recreaciones que allí se realizan convierten a este lugar en una clara opción en cualquier diario de visita a Gibraltar. La Cueva de San Miguel es otro de los lugares más frecuentados por los turistas. Se dice que esta gruta ya era visitada en época de los romanos, y que fue Pomponious Mela, uno de los primeros geógrafos que vivieron en el comienzo de la era cristiana, quien describió Calpe (el nombre romano de Gibraltar) como una montaña con concavidades maravillosas, y que tenía su lado occidental casi abierto por una gran cueva. La cueva consta de una sala superior, conectada con cinco pasajes, con gotas de entre 40 pies (12.2 metros) y 150 pies (45,7 metros) a una sala más pequeña. Más allá de este punto una serie de agujeros estrechos conducen a una sucesión de más cámaras, alcanzando una profundidad de unos 250 pies (62.5 metros) por debajo de la entrada. preparó como un hospital de emergencia, pero nunca se utilizó. Las áreas más oscuras se formaron durante los períodos de menos lluvia. Pero tal vez las dos líneas finas de sustancia blanca quebradiza sean la parte más interesante de su estructura. Se cree que éstas representan períodos glaciares. Además de la sección transversal de la estalagmita, también es translúcida en ciertas partes. Esta estalagmita, que tiene siglos de antigüedad, permite a los visitantes ver la belleza única de la naturaleza cristalizada. Actualmente, la cueva dispone de un auditorio único para conciertos, ballet y teatro. Ha estado en uso como teatro desde principios de los años sesenta y tiene un aforo para albergar a 400 personas. Vistas maravillosas Ir a Punta Europa es alcanzar el punto más meridional del continente europeo. Por tanto, esta es otra de las posibilidades que Gibraltar ofrece al turista que, si la meteorología le favorece, puede disfrutar de unas maravillosas vistas de las costas españolas y marroquíes. Por supuesto que subir hasta la reserva natural, donde vive el macaco gibraltareño, es la alternativa más divertida. Estos monos tienen fama de llevar a

cabo alguna que otra travesura y son muchos los comentarios en internet que advierten al visitante de algunas de sus habilidades. Hasta la reserva se puede llegar a pie, pero no es lo más recomendable. Ir en coche, o tomar el teleférico son las mejores opciones.

ibraltar is one of the best tourist attractions on offer in the Campo de Gibraltar. The Rock, as it is more popularly know, attracts around nine million visitors every year, making it, despite its small size of only eight kilometres, one of the most visited places by those who choose to spend their holidays of summer in the area. The history hanging over Gibraltar, its ideal geographical location and its natural wealth have bolstered its tourist industry, whose key attractions include the well known Great Siege Tunnels, St. Michael’s cave, the Second World War Tunnels, and the Europa Point, from which visitors can see the Spanish and Moroccan coastlines among other things. Not forgetting, of course, the famous macaque monkeys who live in the nature reserve, and arouse curiosity and interest from those climbing the Rock, or even the shops of Main Street, recreating the atmosphere of a typical British high street. But if visitors prefer to step back into the Rock’s history, a visit to the Great Siege Tunnels is a must. A complex maze of tunnels that were built as a defence system to warn off foreign troops. Construction work began in 1782 and their current good condition and the restoration work taking place, has made this attraction a top choice for a day visit to Gibraltar. St. Michael’s Cave is another one of the most visited places by tourists. It is said that this cave was visited by Pomponius Mela during roman times, one of the first geographers who lived during the start of the Christian age, and who described Calpe (the roman name for Gibraltar) as a mountain with wonder-

The cave was prepared as an emergency hospital during the Second World War ful concavities and which has its western side almost opened by a large cave. The cave consists of an Upper Hall, connected to five passages, with drops of between 40 feet (12.2m) and 150 feet (45.7m) into a smaller hall. Beyond this point, a series of narrow holes leads to a further succession of chambers, reaching a depth of some 250 feet (62.5m) below the entrance. During the Second World War the cave was prepared as an emergency hospital, but was never used. The darker areas were formed during periods of low rainfall. But perhaps the two fine lines of crisp white matter are the most interesting parts of its structure. It is believed that these represent glacial periods. In addition to the stalagmite’s cross-section, it is also translucent in certain areas. This stalagmite, which is centuries old, allows visitors to see the unique beauty of its crystalized nature. Visiting Europa point means reaching the southernmost point of continental Europe and as such, is another tourist attraction in Gibraltar, and allowing visitors the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful views of the Spanish and Moroccan coastlines, if the weather is clear.

Of course the nature reserve high above, where the macaque monkeys live, is the fun alternative. These monkeys are well known for their mischief and there are many comments on the Internet warning visitors of some of their skills. The reserve can be reached on foot, but it is not recommended. Going by car, or taking the cable cars are the best options. And after a long day visiting the most emblematic places of Gibraltar,

leave time to go down to Main Street and enjoy the typical English atmosphere. The many bars and shops lining the streets will ensure you get to enjoy the English cuisine on offer, and also buy the odd souvenir.
