THE LAVIT
50 YEARS ON This exhibition celebrates the Lavit Gallery’s 50th anniversary. It is the first in a series of events organised for 2013. It highlights the Gallery’s unique history by focusing on artists which have contributed in making the Lavit Gallery a success.
February 21st – March 16th 2013
INTRODUCTION Addressing the inaugural meeting in 1963 of the Cork Arts Society the director of the Arts Council, Rev D. O’Sullivan SJ, counselled a down-to-earth approach. ‘Take the dust off the arts. The aim is to introduce them to the people of the city …’ The Lavit Gallery has over 50 years shown Cork magnificent art and through dedicated work of members it has advanced. The director also said ‘we will match what you put up out of central funds …’ That funding would be most welcome today. Faced with that elegant Georgian staircase, there were many occasions during the 1960s when I simply did not have the courage to climb the stairs at 16 Lavitts Quay. The thought of someone thinking ‘what would he know about art!’ seemed all very certain in my mind. Eventually, gaining courage, up I went ascending into the Georgian splendour to be greeted by Owen McSweeney the invigilator. He quickly allayed my fears and my knowledge of fine art grew at a steady canter. Many more like me ascended that staircase and are now coming through our entrance here on Fr Mathew Street supporting, with their acquisitions, local, national, and international artists. I have every confidence that this support will contine to flourish for the next 50 years. Joe Burns, chairman

THANKS Over the past 50 years we have accumulated a large number of people to whom thanks is due. To thank everyone would be impossible—so, hopefully, you know who you are, and know our gratitude to you is sincere; but the following is an incomplete list of people. Our thanks to: • Artists who have exhibited with us. • Buyers who have helped us and the artists to continue operating. • Visitors who express their interest in what they see. • Loyal members of the Cork Arts Society. • Gracious people who have officially opened exhibitions for us. • Our sponsors throughout the years, including Thomas Crosbie
Holdings who helped us greatly in the early years.
• Sponsors of the Student of the Year Exhibition, especially Parfrey
Murphy & Co who have sponsored this award since 1998.
• Members of the press and media, who have spread the word by
covering events at the gallery.
• The Crawford College of Art & Design with whom we have had
a long relationship through our Student of the Year Award and the
Fledglings exhibition.
• Galleries, framers and transporters who we have worked with
down through the years.
• Past and present members of our board of directors and staff. • And the people who started it all—50 years ago!
