THE LAVIT GALLERY honours
Walter Verling HRHA
To honour Walter Verling’s 85th birthday which he celebrated last month, and to coincide with a major exhibition of Walter’s work at the Town Hall, and at 84 North Main Street,
Youghal, County Cork, The Lavit Gallery are delighted to exhibit his oeuvre in an intimate Showcase exhibition. Walter’s connection with the gallery goes back to the very foundation of the Cork Arts Society, having had his first solo show at its gallery at 16 Lavitts Quay, in 1964, and he has continued to show with us on a regular basis. Whilst Walter has painted many still life pieces and some portraiture, he is mainly interested in the colour of landscape, the shape of that landscape, and the meaning of landscape. When I look at his landscapes I cannot but think of the words of the late John O’Donohue: ‘Landscape ‘has a soul and a presence, ‘and landscape – living ‘in the mode of silence – ‘is always wrapped ‘in seamless prayer.’ Charles Lamb, whom he painted with in the 1960s, has been his greatest influence, and his choice of working has faithfully being en plain air throughout his painting career. Some of my most enjoyable times have being in Walter’s company listening to him just talk about his love of painting. Joe Burns, chairman
