The firm’s major practice areas include finance, corporate securities, litigation, environmental, legislative and government affairs, real estate, tax, telecommunications, media and technology, insurance, industry practices, and estate and charitable planning.

The firm’s roots can be traced back to 1891 but it is only within the last 15 years that it has seen drastic structural change and growth. Between 1997 and 2009, the firm combined with Marks and Murase: Hebb & Gitlin; Richard & O’Neil; McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen; Riordan & McKinzie; Swidler Berlin; Sakai & Mimura; Alschuler Grossman; New Tokyo International; and McKee Nelson. Through these consolidations, as well as through organic growth, Bingham McCutchen has grown from 225 lawyers in 1995 to 1,100 lawyers today. During this same time frame, the firm more than tripled its number of offices. Today the firm operates through offices in Boston, Hartford, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, Portland, San Francisco, the Silicon Valley, Santa Monica, Washington, Frankfurt, London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Bingham McCutcheon’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Bingham Consulting Group, is also available to advise companies in public policy matters at all levels. The group is led by the

former Governor and Attorney General of New Hampshire, Steve Merrill. Other prominent individuals associated with Bingham McCutcheon include, but are not limited to, the former Los Angeles mayor, Richard Riordan; Thurgood Marshall Jr.; and Christopher Cox, the former chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In support of its strong focus on pro bono work, the firm recently established a Pro Bono Fellowship Program, which enables two associates to work solely on pro bono projects for the duration of one year, while remaining with Bingham McCutcheon. Last year, the firm devoted more than 65,000 hours in pro bono work to various causes including matters related to “constitutional law and civil rights, adoption and children’s rights, nonprofit counseling and community economic development, and jail and prison conditions.” The firm made Fortune magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work for” for six consecutive years now.
