Legal Staff Profile

Faye M. Bracey, Assistant Dean for Career Services By Teresa Cajot As a St. Mary’s University School of Law alumni, Faye M. Bracey has a unique understanding of the needs of the students and alumni who seek her guidance. In her role as the Assistant Dean for Career Services, she puts that knowledge to use in a number of ways, ultimately guiding students to a successful legal career.

In the Career Services Office, Bracey and three other professionals provide students and alumni with career counseling, mock interviews, internship and clerkship opportunities, job options, and more. Bracey’s current efforts are largely focused on recent graduates who took the bar exam and are now trapped in limbo as they await the results. In an effort to encourage these alumni to continue to advance, the law school opened up a series of meetings to assist these graduates in the progression from student to practicing attorney. The series, which is jointly sponsored by the CSO, the Alumni Office, and the Office of Student Services, was kicked off in August with a meeting on resumes. Another meeting, which is scheduled for the end of October, will bring in 2009 and 2010 alumni to provide information on going solo and procuring court appointments. According to Bracey, the Career Services Office, and the school as a whole, are preparing students for the tight job market that currently exists. In addition to the standard

career placement methods, such as campus interviews and resume collects, the office has also tripled the number of spring job fairs, amplified the law school’s leader-to-leader initiative, and broadened the judicial clerkship program. Additionally, the internship and externship programs have been modified, resulting in additional job placements at the time of graduation. Following her graduation from St. Mary’s University School of Law in 1981, Bracey practiced in various firms within the state, where she specialized in real estate law. She also taught as an adjunct professor for several years and has served on a number of boards. Bracey was a former President of the St. Mary’s Law Alumni Association and also sat on the school’s board of trustees. She a member of the Harlan Society, St. Mary’s Alumni Association, the Supreme Court of Texas Grievance Oversight Committee, the National Arbitration Forum, Bexar County Women’s Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the San Antonio Bar Association.
