The CSO at the University of Dayton School of Law By Teresa Cajot The Career Services Office (CSO) at the University of Dayton School of Law in Ohio provides students, alumni, and employers with a host of career planning and placement services. The CSO staff works with students and graduates to explore different legal career paths, develop effective job search techniques, and obtain employment.

Specific services include one-on-one counseling, workshops, resume and cover letter development, job banks, and more. These offerings are made possible by the dedicated staff of the CSO. As the director of the CSO, Tim Swensen juggles a range of responsibilities, from career counseling to legal networking, as a means of establishing job opportunities for the school’s students and graduates. Prior to joining the law school in 2004, Swensen practiced commercial, medical malpractice defense, and real estate litigation with Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin, which is now known as Husch Blackwell. He also served as a member of the firm’s summer mentoring program and was a member of the recruiting and hiring committees. Prior to pursuing law, Swensen was a mental health therapist in Darke County, Ohio and a clinical psychology intern at the Indiana University of Medicine. He holds a JD from Vanderbilt University and a MS from Penn State University. During his free time he enjoys reading and freelance writing. In fact, he

has published essays for a number of outlets including the University of Dayton Magazine, the Ohio Magazine, and the Cup of Comfort anthology. Another key member of the CSO is Julie Jackson, who functions as the program manager and counselor. In her position, Jackson is responsible for the scheduling of guest speakers, workshops, panel discussions, job fairs, and other career-related happenings. Like Swensen, she also assists students in the development and review of resumes and cover letters. Jackson is further responsible for maintaining the Career Services section of the Dayton Law website and tutoring students and alumni on practical job search methods. Jackson joined the law school in 1989 after spending 11 years as a sales administration manager with an international corporation. She earned an AA with high honors from Sinclair Community College and a BA in Communication Management from the University of Dayton.
