Walter Mondale to Receive Lifetime Achievment Award By Teresa Cajot ALM’s The American Lawyer has announced this year’s recipients of the Lifetime Achievment awards and Walter Mondale is among the eight honorees. The award was developed to recognize members of the legal profession who have demonstrated exceptional public sector success and dedication to public service.
Based on Mondale’s range of service, it should come as little surprise that he made the list. He has served as a corporal in the Army, a state attorney general, a senator, vice president, and an ambassador. At the age of 83, Mondale is still active in the legal field and currently serves as a senior counsel at Dorsey & Whitney. Mondale, who earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota, was practicing with a Minneapolis law firm when he was appointed to the position of state attorney general in 1960. In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson chose Minnesota Senator Humphrey to run as his vice president and Mondale was selected to take control of the vacant Senate seat. He was re-elected in 1966 and 1972, before taking on the role of Vice President of the United States under Jimmy Carter. During his term as the vice president, Mondale advanced US policy abroad and became the first vice president to occupy an office within the White House. As a Senator, Mondale served on the Finance Committee; the Labor and Public Welfare Committee; the Budget Committee; and the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. He was also the chairman on both the Select Committee on Equal Education Opportunity and the Intelligence Committee’s Domestic Violence Task Force.

As the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in 1984, Mondale took Geraldine Ferraro, the first women on a major ticket, as his Vice Presidential running mate. Reagan took the presidency that year and Mondale returned to practicing law. In 1987 he moved back to Minnesota and subsequently joined Dorsey & Whitney. During this time, he was also a Distinguished University Fellow in Law and Public Affairs at the Humphrey H. Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. In 1990, Mondale formed the Mondale Policy Forum at the Humphrey Institute, which has since accommodated conferences on a variety of national and international matters. However, from 1993 until 1997, he returned to politics and served as the US Ambassador to Japan under President Bill Clinton. Upon completion of his term of service, Mondale returned to Dorsey & Whitney. Mondale has released a book and authored several articles on both US and international issues. Mondale and the other award recipients will be celebrated at The American Lawyer Awards Dinner in New York on October 26, 2011.
