Activities of Uttara Bank Limited From the beginning,Uttara Bank Ltd. is working relentlessly for the development of our economy and for the betterment of the shareholders. The bank gives different types of services and earns profit. The activities of Uttara Bank Ltd. are given below:

Deposits: The bank collects deposits to create fund for investment. In the prevailing situation mobilizing of deposits had become very competitive and as a result the average cost of fund of the bank in private sectors had increased compared to the previous year. The bank has given stress on procurement of low cost fund including cost free funds for bringing down the average cost of fund. The bank’s different types of deposits are as follows: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7)

Current and other deposits. Savings bank deposits. Monthly profit scheme. Fixed or term deposits. Pension savings Prakalpa. Bills payable account. Others.

Loans and Advances: The bank’s another major function is to provide loans and advances to different sectors. The bank earns a lion’s share of revenue from providing loans and advances. The advance portfolio of the bank is well diversified and covers funding to a wide spectrum of business and industries including agro-based and agro processing, paper and paper products, chemicals, constructions, real estate and loans under consumers’ credit schemes, various trading business, service holder’s loan and women entrepreneurs of the country.

Special Schemes: Other than the normal banking business the bank has the following special schemes:

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8)

Small and medium scale entrepreneurs credit scheme. Scheme for loans to employees. Loan scheme for women entrepreneurs. Customers credit scheme. Pension deposit scheme for small saver. Monthly deposits and profit scheme. Interest free deposits. Lifetime savings scheme.

Recovery: The bank has a huge amount of bad loan. These loans have no security, even no proper record of particulars of borrowers. As a result, recovery of these loans has become a very difficult job. The bank works hard to collect these bad loans.

International Trade: The International Trade constitutes a significant business activity conducted by the bank. The bank earns a handsome amount of revenue from International Trade Business.

Guarantee Business: The bank also earns revenue from Guarantee Business. The guarantees are issued in favour of different Govt. authorities, Autonomous bodies, Corporations, Multinational Companies etc. against proper securities on behalf of the clients of the Bank.

Investment: The bank has always given emphasis on investment of funds in high yield areas and maintains Statutory Liquidity Requirement (SLR) as fixed by Bangladesh bank. The portfolio of investment included Govt. Treasury Bills, Prize bonds, Shares in Public Limited Company etc.

Computer Application in Uttara Bank Limited Uttara Bank Limited is one of the private sector banks having wide network of branches in the country .In 2007 the bank further expanded its operational network by opening six new branches ,bringing the total number of branches to 207. All the branches of the bank are operating under computer network using the bank's own software and manual banking system in day to day banking. Above all in order to ensure speedy services in International business E-mail is in operation in Head office and in almost all branches. At present International division of Head office and 38 branches is under SWIFT operation. As a result the bank has been able to transmit letter of credit, fund and message instantly

throughout the world at low cost. In accordance with the demand of the day shifting of branches to the newly decorated premises in more important and commercially potential places, renovation and decoration of old branches with modern amenities are also being continued. Bank has introduced its own web site the address of which (Address) is: www.uttarabank-bd.com.

Web Site of Uttara Bank Limited Web site of Uttara Bank Limited is much more informative but some links do not work. Such as, online banking, ATMs, card services, locker services etc .This bank should introduce these services and activate these links as soon as possible.

Software of Uttara Bank Limited Uttara Bank Limited does not use any own made or purchased software to provide prompt services to the customers. But most of the commercial banks use software where they manage their customers' accounts easily, accurately and automatically. At this competitive situation, Uttara Bank Limited should purchase any software. Such as, PC Bank 2000. It will accelerate this bank's services and help the bank to grow its market share and get high relative competitive position.

Online Banking in Uttara Bank Limited Uttara Bank Limited does not give online banking facility considering its huge number of branches (207)surrounded all over the country .But, most of the commercial banks give online banking facility in spite of having more branches. So, Uttara Bank Limited should introduce online banking facility as early as possible to give prompt service and compete with other banks.

Deficiencies Considering Online Banking Online banking means the performance of banking activities via the Internet. Uttara Bank Limited does not give online banking facility .So, it has following deficiencies considering online banking services:

1. Paying Bills Online: Customers can use online banking to pay their bills. This will eliminate the need for stamps and protect them from the check being lost in the mail. Most banks will have a section in which they set up payees. Customers will need to fill out the information once, and then they can simply choose that profile every time they pay a bill online. Uttara Bank Limited does not give this service preferring

manually paying the bills (gas, electric, water, cable, phone, and other utilitytype bills).

2. Viewing Transactions: Online banking allows customers to access their account history and transactions from anywhere. This is the quickest way to check and see if a transaction has cleared account. This can help customers to find out the amount of a transaction after they have lost their receipts. It also allows finding out about unauthorized transactions more quickly. This can help customers to resolve the issues more quickly. Uttara Bank Limited does not give this service. 3. Transferring Money between Accounts: Online banking also allows customers to transfer money between accounts much more quickly. It is more convenient than using the automated phone service, and can save customer a trip to the bank. Uttara Bank Limited does not give this service.

5. Continuous Transactions: Unlike customer corner bank, online banking sites never close; they're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and they're only a mouse click away which is not possible for Uttara Bank Limited.

6. Ubiquity: If customers are out of state or even out of the country when a money problem arises, they can log on instantly to their online bank and take care of business; 24/7.Uttara Bank Limited does not have this facility.

7. Transaction speed: Online bank sites generally execute and confirm transactions at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. So, Uttara Bank Limited has transaction speed for its manual banking system.

8. Effectiveness: Many online banking sites now offer sophisticated tools, including account aggregation, stock quotes, rate alerts and portfolio managing programs to help customers manage all of their assets more effectively. Most are also compatible

with money managing programs such as Quicken and Microsoft Money. So, Uttara Bank Limited is backward from these modern services. So, Uttara Bank Limited should save time and money by taking advantages of online banking. It must need to introduce online banking to compete with other banks effectively and efficiently.

Database of Uttara Bank Limited Uttara Bank Limited does not maintain any database for its employees, customers etc. So, data are not maintained in a systematic way. They can not show enough data together to anybody at any time. They can create and maintain database using Microsoft Access easily which may be very much helpful for their operations. We have created central database and other additional database for Uttara Bank Limited according to the segregated data we have got from the bank.

Central Database of Uttara Bank Limited Uttar Bank Limited can maintain central database in MS Access. We have prepared a central database for Uttara bank Limited based on corporate information.

Query of Employee As tables grow in size they can have hundreds of thousands of records, which makes it impossible for the user to pick out specific records from that table. Queries were designed to combat this problem. With a query we can apply a filter to the table's data, so that we only get the information that we want. We have created query on employee table of Uttara Bank Limited, Shyamoli Branch, and Dhaka. . This query can be run by the help of fields such as Employee ID, Designation, Mobile Phone, Address, Country/Region etc. Query of Employee EID 12

Form of Employee A form is nothing more than a graphical representation of a table. We can add, update and delete records in our table by using a form. Although a form can be named different from a table, they both still manipulate the same information and the same exact data. Hence, if we change a record in a form, it will be changed in the table also. A form is very good to use when we have numerous fields in a table. This way we can see all the fields in one screen, whereas if we were in the table view (datasheet) we would have to keep scrolling to get the field we desire. We have created form of employee table.
