Mobile phone work GSM vs. CDMA Impact of Mobile phone Contribution to the socio-economic development
Mobile phone work Cellular vs. PCS: Personal Cellular communication service (PCS) is a wireless phone service very Similar to cellular phone service, but with an emphasis on personal service and Extended mobility. The term “PCS” is often used in place of “digital cellular” but true PCS means that other service like paging caller ID and e- main are bundled into the Service. While cellular was originally created for use in cars, PCS was designed from the ground up for greater user mobility. PCS has smaller cells and therefore requires a larger number of antennas to cover a geographic area PCS phones use frequencies Between 1.85 and 1.99 GHZ {1850 MHZ to 1990 MHZ}. Dream phone? If you could design your own cell-phone, what would it do? {IT they already make it, You can mention that too) •
3G technologies:
3g technologies are the latest in mobile Communications. 3g stand for “ third generation”. This makes analog cellular technology generation one and digital/PCS generation two. 3G are intended for the true multimedia cell phone. Typically call smart phone. it supports web based application. 3G comprise several cellular access technologies. The three is most common one as of 2005. CDMA 2000 based – based on 2G codes multiple access WCDMA (UMTS) – wideband code division multiple access. TD-SCDMA- Time – division synchronous code division multiple access 3G network have potential transfer speed of up to 3 Mbps.(about 15 seconds to download a 3 min. MP3 song.) for comparison, the fastest. 2G phones can achieve up to 144-Kbps (about 8 minutes to download a 3-minute song). 3G's high data rates are ideal for downloading information from the Internet and sending and receiving large, multimedia files. 3G phones are like mini-laptops and can accommodate broadband applications like video conferencing, receiving streaming video from the Web, sending and receiving faxes and instantly downloading e-mail messages with attachments. •
Dual Band vs. Dual Mode:
If you travel a lot, you will probably want to look for phones that offer multiple bands, multiple modes or both. Let's take a look at each of these options: Multiple bands - A phone that has multiple-band capability can switch frequencies. For example, a dual-band TDMA phone could use TDMA services in either an 800MHz or a 1900-MHz system. A quad-band GSM phone could use GSM service in the 850-MHz, 900-MHz, 1800-MHz or 1900-MHz band. Multiple modes - In cell phones, "mode" refers to the type of transmission technology used. So, a phone that supported AMPS and TDMA could switch back and forth as needed. It's important that one of the modes is AMPS — this gives you analog service if you are in an area that doesn't have digital support. Multiple band/Multiple modes - The best of both worlds allows you to switch between frequency bands and transmission modes as needed. Phones that support these options do changing bands or modes automatically. Usually the phone will have a default option set, such as 1900-MHz TDMA, and will try to connect at that frequency with that technology first. If it supports dual bands, it will switch to 800 MHz if it cannot connect at 1900 MHz. And if the phone supports more than one mode, it will try the digital mode(s) first, then switch to analog.
2
You can find both dual-mode and tri-mode phones. The term "tri-mode" can be deceptive. It may mean that the phone supports two digital technologies, such as CDMA and TDMA, as well as analog. In that case, it is a true tri-mode phone. But it can also mean that it supports one digital technology in two bands and also offers analog support. A popular version of the tri-mode type of phone for people who do a lot of international traveling has GSM service in the 900-MHz band for Europe and Asia and the 1900-MHz band for the United States, in addition to the analog service. Technically, this is a dual-mode phone, and one of those modes (GSM) supports two bands. •
Problems with Cell Phones:
A cell phone, like any other consumer electronic device, has its problems: Generally, non-repairable internal corrosion of parts results if you get the phone wet or uses wet hands to push the buttons. Consider a protective case. If the phone does get wet, be sure it is totally dry before you switch it on so you can try to avoid damaging internal parts. Extreme heat in a car can damage the battery or the cell-phone electronics. Extreme cold may cause a momentary loss of the screen display. Analog cell phones suffer from a problem known as "cloning." A phone is "cloned" when someone steals its ID numbers and is able to make fraudulent calls on the owner's account. Here is how cloning occurs: When your phone makes a call, it transmits the ESN and MIN to the network at the beginning of the call. The MIN/ESN pair is a unique tag for your phone — this is how the phone company knows who to bill for the call. When your phone transmits its MIN/ESN pair, it is possible for nefarious sorts to listen (with a scanner) and capture the pair. With the right equipment, it is fairly easy to modify another phone so that it contains your MIN/ESN pair, which allows the nefarious individual to make calls on your account. •
GSM Vs CDMA
In cellular service there are two main competing network technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division.. Multiple Access (CDMA). Cellular carriers including Sprint PCS, Cingular Wireless, Verizon and T-Mobile use one or the other. Understanding the difference between GSM and CDMA will allow you to choose a carrier that uses the preferable network technology for your needs. The GSM Association is an international organization founded in 1987, dedicated to providing, developing, and overseeing the worldwide wireless standard of GSM. CDMA, a proprietary standard designed by Qualcomm in the United States, has been the dominant
network standard for North America and parts of Asia. However, GSM networks continue to make inroads in the United States, as CDMA networks make progress in other parts of the world. There are camps on both sides that firmly believe either GSM or CDMA architecture is superior to the other. That said, to the non-invested consumer who simply wants bottom line information to make a choice, the following considerations may be helpful. Coverage: The most important factor is getting service in the areas you will be using your phone. Upon viewing competitors' coverage maps you may discover that only GSM or CDMA carriers offer cellular service in your area. If so, there is o decision to be made, but most people will find that they do have a choice. Data Transfer Speed: With the advent of cellular phones doing double and triple duty as streaming video devices, podcast receivers and email devices, speed is important to those who use the phone for more than making calls. CDMA has been traditionally faster than GSM, though both technologies continue to rapidly leapfrog along this path. Both boast "3G" standards, or 3r generation technologies. EVDO, also known as CDMA2000, is CDMA's answer to the need for speed with a downstream rate of about 2 megabits per second, though some reports suggest real world speeds are closer to 300-700 kilobits per second (kbps). This is comparable to basic DSL. As of fall 2005, EVDO is in the process of being deployed. It is not available everywhere and requires a phone that is CDMA2000 ready.. GSM's answer is EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), which boasts data rates of up to 384 kbps with real world speeds reported closer to 70-140 kbps. With added technologies still in the works that include UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Standard) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), speeds reportedly increase to about 275—380 kbps. This technology is also known as W-CDMA, but is incompatible with CDMA networks. An EDGE- ready phone is required. In the case of EVDO, theoretical high traffic can degrade speed and performance, while the EDGE network is more susceptible to interference. Both require being within close range of a cell to get the best speeds, while performance decreases with distance. Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards: In the United States only GSM phones use SIM cards. The removable SIM card allows phones to be instantly activated, interchanged, swapped out and upgraded, all without carrier intervention. The SIM itself is tied to the network, rather than the actual phone. Phones that are card-enabled can be used with any GSM carrier. The CDMA equivalent, a R-UIM card, is only available in parts of Asia but remains on the horizon for the U.S. market. CDMA carriers in the U.S. require proprietary handsets that are linked to one carrier only and are not card-enabled. To upgrade a CDMA phone, the carrier must deactivate the old phone then activate the new one. The old phone becomes useless. Roaming: For the most part, both networks have fairly concentrated coverage in major cities and along major highways. GSM carriers, however, have roaming contracts with other 4
GSM carriers, allowing wider coverage of more rural areas, generally speaking, often without roaming charges to the customer. CDMA networks may not cover rural areas as well as GSM carriers, and though they may contract with GSM cells for roaming in more rural areas, the charge to the customer will generally be significantly higher International Roaming: If you need to make calls to other countries, a GSM carrier can offer international roaming, as GSM networks dominate the world market. If you travel to other countries you can even use your GSM cell phone abroad, providing it is a quad-band phone (850/900/1800/1900 MHz). By purchasing a SIM card with minutes and a local number in the country you are visiting, you can make calls against the card to save yourself international roaming charges from your carrier back home. CDMA phones that are not card-enabled do not have this capability. According CDG.org, CDMA networks support over 270 million subscribers worldwide, while GSM.org tallies up their score at over 1 billion. As CDMA phones become R-UIM enabled and roaming contracts between networks improve, integration of the standards might eventually make differences all but transparent to the consumer. The chief GSM carriers in the United States are Cingular Wireless, recently merged with AT&T Wireless, and T-Mobile USA. Major CDMA carriers are Sprint PCS, Verizon and Virgin Mobile. There are also several smaller cellular companies on both networks. • Impact of mobile phone: The impact of mobile phone dramatic in terms of development of the telecommunication sector. The leledensity in the country, which was less than one percent in 1997 and one of the lowest in the world. Less than nine years it has jumped to more than six percent. The mobile phone market since then has expended faster than in any other country in the region, virtually a quiet (mobile phone) revolution has taken place, thousands of remote villages, including the coastal off-shore islands like Bhola, Hatiya and swandwip. In these places people had never ever seen a telephone set. They are now using mobile phones and talking not only to their relatives and friends but also doing their business more profitable than ever before. By being able to connect to urban areas or ever to foreign countries, a whole new world of opportunity is opening up for the villagers in Bangladesh. Contribution to the Socio-economic Development: The activities of mobile phone contribute to the socio-economic development of Bangladesh in many different ways. In addition to employing nearly 2000 people, more than 1,00,000 people are directly dependent on mobile phone for their livelihood, including the people working for the dealers, agents, contractors, suppliers and a major portion of that figure includes the village phone operator’s. According to the International telecommunication Union, the Geneva-based UN body, the addition of each new telephone in a developing country like Bangladesh, adds USS 2500 to the country’s GDP.
There are many village phone operators by owning a mobile phone they have dramatically increased not only their family income, but also their social status. The Government of Bangladesh has also benefited directly from the mobile phone without
investment. The government is earning vary large revenues from taxes; duties and various other fee received from the mobile phone operators. In fact, Gramen phone would be currently the largest taxpayer in the country. Its contributions to the National Exchequer have gone up from Tk. 521 million in 1997, to more than Tk. 11.5billion in 2004. Grameenphone also actively participates in promoting different socio-cultural activities and sports events in the country. Its sponsored many activities over the years including the Zainul-Quamrul International Children’s Art Competition, Painting Exhibiting and many other activities. It has also sponsored a scholarship fund for the poor and meritorious students of the Finance and Banking Department of Dhaka University. Grameenphone donated to computers to two schools for underprivileged children. Mobile phone playing a vital role for socio-economic development of Bangladesh. Mobile phone is also a weapon against poverty.
