Teacher and expert thrifter Lo McCray has learned to embrace what brings her joy

by Christa Lee

This middle school teacher often celebrates her birthday with a themed party. “Last year it was African safari,” Lo says. “I go big on decor because I love arts and crafts.” Creativity has always been a part of the educator’s DNA, giving her a killer eye for scoring unique thrift store pieces. Thrifting may have started as a hobby for her, but it has blossomed into a popular blog and online thrift store called Shop True Lo Style that reflects her newfound confidence: “As I got older, I stopped following the trends. I learned it doesn’t matter what people think of you, and I just wear whatever makes me happy.” Her eclectic style has even inspired her students: “One of them carries a cow-print purse because of me. I love that I’m encouraging them to express themselves.”

Her mood booster

Treating people right, smiling at people, having positive interactions— these are all things that feed my spirit.

Life lessons

Take the time to find out what you enjoy and actually do it! Go for a walk. Have a beach day. Unplug from your devices. For me, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise—it helped me learn how to check in with myself.

Happy, healthy secrets

SMART SNACKING I bought a portable blender to make smoothies in my classroom during breaks. I usually pre-fill it with my favorite fruits so I can drink on the go.

HOW I STAY ACTIVE

I’m not big on the gym, so roller-skating is my way of getting exercise. I can do it anywhere, and it’s always fun.

ST YLE INSPIR ATION

My dad loves dressing up, and he isn ’t afraid of color. When I was growing up, my mom supported me and never questioned my choices, like when I’d wear a different color of shoe on each foot!

Future forward

I want to learn how to sew. If I could eventually turn my design ideas into real clothes for myself and that people wanted to buy, that would be exciting.
