A double-duty living room works hard day and night. DESIGN JACINTHE LEROUX

Working from home is likely to be the new norm for many of us. In tight quarters, that means making rooms into multi-purpose spaces. A great place to start is the living room, which is usually underused during the work day. Maximize its functionality with custom furnishings (worth the cost if working from home is your new lifestyle) and flexible floor plans. We designed a smart day-use desk space that folds away to keep your living room a stylish oasis at night.

Day

Sleek, sophisticated and smart, the custom desktop – perfectly sized for a laptop – slides out from the wall unit for the workday, and folds away flush with the built-in at quitting time. The elevated closed storage cubbie stashes supplies; a large lower drawer conceals the printer.

Night

After work, the desk can be cleared for children’s homework, board games, or to be used as an extra countertop for appetizers when entertaining. Alternately, when it’s not needed, slide it back for extra floor space – dance party, anyone?
