KITCHENS
cabinets from what?
Bedroom furniture becomes personality-packed cabinetry in this clever kitchen remodel that’s also a budget coup.

Lora Lindberg spotted two sets of outdated bedroom furniture at a thrift store that were perfect—for her kitchen. At less than $500, the six pieces were 10 percent of what she estimated new cabinetry would cost for ", '#&3Į-# ,%& (ġ-"# (!.)( ġȐ 2,ĵ/**,Ġ Turning the units into functional cabinets ,+/# ,-)'ĵ)( -ġ-/"-*&. ), '- that raise the furniture to counter height and cubbies on top of the two nightstands that ȓ ( %. ART SHOW
A pair of candelabra sconces and assorted art from thrift stores and Etsy, above, give Lora Lindberg’s kitchen unexpected living room style. The wall is faced with $50 worth of ¼-inch plywood cut into planks to look like shiplap paneling. “It’s a super economical backsplash,” Lora says.

DOUBLE FEATURE
Like the range-wall cabinets, the island, above, is made of furniture, but painted gray for contrast. A $200 pair of doors from a salvage yard replaces a window.
HAVE A SEAT
A built-in bench, right, teams with a teak table ($550 on Craigslist) and a salvaged bicycle (minus pedals and half the handlebars and seats) as wall art. Finding a new purpose for old pieces and rescuing neglected houses are passions that Lora turned into a business with her friend Debbie Cederlind.
WALK-IN WELCOME
Lora stole space from a bathroom to create a pantry, left, that gives her the display shelves and storage for large pieces she lacks in the kitchen. She turned the panels of a Craigslist folding screen into doors and lined the walls with IKEA bookcases to get the look of built-ins without the cost. Q

Dramatization: Hidden body oils and sweat on cotton t-shirt after workout under blacklight

i did it! This do-it-yourselfer decided an IKEA table oughta be upgraded into an ottoman. She brought out its elegant side with paint, fabric, and a handful of buttons.
Krys Melo searched for an ottoman/coff ee table that would add color and shine to her Los Angeles home with its modern furniture and gallery wall of 1950s Saturday Evening Post prints. When she couldn’t fi nd the perfect piece, she ended up making it.
Krys bought a set of metal tables, tucked one away for a future project, and painted the other one gold. She swapped the glass top for the particleboard shelf and upholstered the shelf in velvet. Now she’s got a soft spot that serves as a table, a footrest, and even a seat for a party. (She held her breath when her dad fi rst sat on it, then heaved a sigh of relief. No harm done.)
