For a space that ’s as airy as the coast but also as warm as sun-kissed sand, let the shoreline be your guide. Hazy marine blues and pebble grays are nature’s complement to earthy tints that have an undertone of amber—the colors of sand and shells. It ’s a softened take on color wheel opposites blue and orange.

To marry the colors of an openconcept living room and kitchen while letting each space have its own identity, designer Stefani Stein used a simple trick: Reverse the ratio of warm and cool tones. Blue and gray dominated the kitchen’s existing cabinets and backsplash, so she led with cream and camel hues in the living room.
