BEHIND THE SCENES
O
n social media, I mostly react to things. I wait for events to happen (Olympics! Teen Choice Awards! Weird things in the office!), then share my random commentary. The trip included a But our cover girl, Zendaya (page 72), does so much more. Not visit to our photo only does she clap back when haters attack her, but she is also studio (above) and proactive and sparks positive discussions about race, feminism, job advice from editors (left). and, yes, even mullets. Inspired by Daya and so many of the stars who appear in “The Faves” (page 78), our second annual social media awards, I’ve decided it’s time to use social media not to react—but to create a revolution. Seventeen is declaring October 17—of course!—Body Confidence Day (which is long overdue considering we have two “holidays” dedicated to doughnuts). We’re teaming up with Instagram to get the conversation going about body image and to create a community where we accept and celebrate ourselves—and each other— for the amazing individuals we are. So starting right now, post photos and videos of yourself, your friends, and anyone who inspires you to embrace yourself and feel #PerfectlyMe. We’ll re-gram pics tagged with @Seventeen and #PerfectlyMe all month long. Then pick up our November issue, where we’ll celebrate you even more. Another group of young women I want to highlight are the ambitious and awesome teens who joined us for the Seventeen Fashion Experience in NYC over the summer. (Check out some of their trip highlights here, and see above for how you can do it too!) These style-obsessed girls came to NYC and got tips from our staff and other industry insiders, and now they’re closer to making their career dreams a reality. Join me as we make this month— and the entire school year—all about being proactive, positive, and #PerfectlyMe.

Meg DeAngelis (aka MayBaby), 21, spills the success secrets that landed her over 5.4 million subs. As told to JEN ABIDOR
INSTANT INSPO
“I get ideas for videos everywhere I go, and then I write them all down on a giant whiteboard in my bedroom,” Meg says.
To start, you just need a pretty decent camera—an iPhone totally counts. It’s a good idea to try making videos using your phone first because if you don’t end up loving life as a vlogger, at least you didn’t spend a lot of money on an expensive camera. Plus, it feels more authentic. Pro tips: Avoid the frontfacing lens (the quality isn’t as good), and prop up your phone on a stack of books. I still use that instead of a tripod!
Introduce yourself
For your first video, something like “10 Things You Should Know About Me” is always a good idea. That way you can show your potential subscribers exactly who you are, what you’re into, and what they’re going to get from following your channel. Always be 100 percent yourself and make sure to show off your personality.
Don’t be camera shy
Recording can feel uncomfortable, but someone once told me to pretend I’m talking to a friend. Then you’re not overwhelmed, thinking, Oh, will all these people be interested in this video? That tip really changed my life.
26 SEVENTEEN.COM / OCTOBER 2016
Set the stage
Be consistent
Learn to edit
Time it right
Make sure you find a quiet setting so you can focus while shooting—that’s why I film my videos in my room. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable, and apply your normal makeup (or none at all!). One trick? If you’re filming at night with a bright light on, a little extra bronzer will help you pop on camera. The best programs for editing a video are iMovie (which comes free with all Mac computers) and Final Cut. You can find tutorials on YouTube, but I find that the best way to learn a software is to just go in, click on a bunch of stuff, and figure it out myself.
Get discovered
When you’re starting out on YouTube, the title and thumbnail (the preview pic) for your video are really important. They’re what will determine whether or not someone clicks on your video. Make your thumbnail the proudest moment from the video—for me, that’s the shot I spent the most time setting up. Less important? Tags. Someone at YouTube told me they don’t matter. To help get noticed, try to participate in trending challenge videos.
Uploading frequently is so important. When I started, I posted every other day. It was a lot of work but so worth it, because it’s the best way to grow your channel. If you’re serious about getting famous, try to work on your videos every day for an hour or two, and post at least once or twice a week. I’ve heard posting at 3 p.m. on Fridays or Saturdays is smart because then your videos will be fresh for the weekend. And don’t post too late at night—you want your audience to be awake!
Focus on you
I don’t watch many YouTube videos because then I obsess about what I should be doing or what’s “normal.” If you try to make things without seeing what others have done, you’ll surprise yourself and come up with really cool stuff. That’s how you find your voice.
Enjoy it
Most important, make sure you’re having fun. Yes, you have to work hard, but your viewers will notice if you don’t love what you’re doing . . . and so will you!

“We Used Social Media to

You know that feeling when you see something on the news and want to act? These teens planned a Black Lives Matter march—and all it took was one DM. as told to ANDREA STANLEY

ALL TOGETHER NOW
T
The first week of July was a difficult one. Two African-American men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were shot and killed by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and St. Paul, Minnesota, respectively, adding to a string of recent cases of controversial police shootings in the US. Like so many of you, Tyyahnna Collins, Jakaila Green, and Dasia Jones— three teens from Knoxville, Tennessee—felt hopeless and helpless as they watched their social media feeds rage with stories, photos, and videos of the incidents. Though the girls all went to different schools and were only acquaintances, when they came across each other’s posts on Instagram, their bond was instant. Dasia, 17: I was so upset. age, so the shooting was something that could have happened to him or even to my brother. That was terrifying. I was tweeting a thousand times and posting paragraphs of my opinions on Instagram about everything that was occurring, and I just wished I could stand up and actually do something. Tyyahnna, 16: I wanted to break down and cry. As a teen, I don’t really get a lot of acknowledgment from adults about how these issues might be affecting me—I wanted to show that they do affect me and that I care. So when I realized Dasia and Jakaila felt the same way, I reached out to them over DM and said, “Hey, how about we start a protest?” Jakaila, 16: When I saw her message come in, I was excited. It was hard to
figure out exactly what I could do, so it felt easier to take action with other people. What was happening seemed personal, and alone that can make you feel really bad or angry, but as a group we felt strong. Dasia: I remember feeling so passionate, like I had a purpose.
WANTED: PEACEFUL PROTEST VIBES ONLY
Through direct messages, they started brainstorming a plan, and with each exchange, they were more and more empowered. They decided to stage a march through downtown Knoxville that coming Sunday and designed a flier to spread the word. It said: “It’s time for us to get away from our computer screens
and phones and speak our minds. We matter. Black Lives Matter.” They FRIENDS shared it on Insta and Twitter. We were like, “Wow, we’re just trying to do something good.” Dasia: An older man posted on Facebook that he was going to come and counter-rally us. That scared me. We didn’t want any trouble. Lots of kids from school messaged me that their parents were worried about violence, so they weren’t allowed to come. One girl told me she didn’t agree with what I was doing, but she STYLE BOSSES admired that I was standing up for what I believe in. That was cool. Jakaila: We were nervous. MARCH ON
Four days after their first DM, the day of the protest arrived. More than 120 people showed up. They carried posters— one said, “Black Lives Matter. All Lives Matter. Cops’ Lives Matter”—and the group marched through the streets chanting, “We are ready for peace.” Tyyahnna: We were so anxious. But when we pulled up to Market Square and saw everyone, I was so shocked, I could have cried. There were people from all different backgrounds. Dasia: There were police officers by our side, which was really nice. We shook their hands and thanked them. Jakaila: It was such a rush and exciting to actually accomplish it. Even if we only touched two people in the whole entire world, at least we did something. I’m happy knowing that I took action for a cause that I believe in.

So we wanted to design and sell products on one site in order to spread the message that all your passions are important and valid. HOW ARE YOUR STYLES DIFFERENT? CS: Faith’s clothes tend to be more pink and bubbly whereas mine are a little more edgy, black, and gray. It’s always been that way, ever since we were little. Is Your Phone
WRECKING YOUR SKIN? Here are the signs that the lifeline to your social life is sabotaging your complexion. BY KELSEY CASTAÑON
You’re Noticing Weird Lines
If you’re glued to your phone (and studies say you are— for up to 10 hours a day!), you may get wrinkles at an early age. Squinting to read texts creates eye crinkles and frown lines, while looking down at your cell leads to “tech neck,” a crease that resembles a choker. “Repetitive motions gradually weaken the skin,” says dermatologist Ashley Magovern, M.D. TECH SUPPORT Increase your font to Mom and Dad size (20 points or more). And chin up! Keep your cell at eye level. SKIN S.O.S. No matter what, the eye area is the first to wrinkle. Prevent that by using a cream packed with vitamins A, C, and E. NO7 Early Defence Eye Cream, $20, ULTA stores
Have a Crazy Face Rash?
Unexplained red bumps on your hands or face mean you may be allergic to your phone. According to studies, some mobile devices contain nickel (a common skin allergen), and that’s led to doctors seeing more breakouts. Avoid irritation with a nickel-free phone case (most are, but check to be safe), says Dr. Gohara.
You’ve Lost Your Glow
A harmless text at bedtime could end up keeping you awake for hours. The ding makes you peek at your cell, and then the blue LED light stimulates your brain, says dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D. That throws off your body’s level of melatonin—the chemical that makes you sleepy. Nighttime is when skin repairs itself, so slack on zzz’s and you’ll wake up looking dull and tired. TECH SUPPORT Put your phone away an hour before bed. Can’t go without? Dim the screen light, or if you have an iPhone, set it to Night Shift to tone down the blue glare automatically. SKIN S.O.S. An overnight mask with stimulating goji berry makes skin look fresh in the a.m.—even when you’re dragging.
You Have Cheek Zits
Your phone is really dirty—like, toilet seat– level dirty, studies say. “There’s makeup and oil coating the surface, which transfer to your skin and plug up your pores,” says Dr. Gohara. This causes inflammation and acne in your “phone zone”—the area from your upper cheek to your chin. TECH SUPPORT Keep your screen clean with antibacterial wipes (or facial towelettes you already own). Also, wash your hands often, so dirt on your fingers doesn’t transfer to your phone.
You’ve Got Brown Spots
The longer you chat on the phone, the more it heats up. That warmth triggers the production of melanin (the skin’s pigment) and can leave you with annoying dark spots or discoloration, says Dr. Magovern. TECH SUPPORT Use speakerphone or earbuds with a mic as much as possible.
SKIN S.O.S. Glycolic acid pads can help de-gunk pores and gently exfoliate skin to keep it clear.
SKIN S.O.S. Try a serum with vitamin C to brighten existing spots and antiinflammatory green tea to calm skin so future ones won’t pop up.

THE POWER OF PERFUME
some girls reapply lipstick all day long. I spray fragrance. I put it on in the morning, during the day in my office, right before I go out in the evening, and sometimes in a cab. (And when I travel, I spray the clothes in my suitcase, so I don’t have to carry a big bottle.) What I love most about perfume is it changes your mood. Not only can it bring back glorious memories—one spray of a particular fragrance, and I am back in Yorkshire, England, laughing and cycling with friends—but it also helps project the energy you want to put out to the world. When I was younger, I wore a lot of dark perfumes. Today I stick to tart citrus scents. They reflect my sense of humor: It’s dry, definitely not sweet. And you will never catch me wearing vanilla!
To find out your happy perfume place, take this quiz—then visit Macy’s for their Scent Event, September 28 through October 9, where you can test them all.

Not only do sunshine-colored bites give off a cheery vibe, but they also make your body happy. They’re rich with vitamin C, which keeps your immune system on point and your bones and teeth strong—now that’s a reason to smile!
Even the most pro-FNV girl can eat only so many plants! This is how to sneak them in.
1 ORANGE
These bright foods contain beta-carotene, which helps protect your skin from the sun—sort of like natural sunscreen! (You still need SPF, though.) And they’re full of vitamin A, which is key for vision and bone health, Alexandra says. Feel free to throw (lots of this) shade on your plate.
RED
Crimson-colored foods pack a serious health punch thanks to an antioxidant called lycopene, which reduces the risk of certain types of cancer. Also worth starring: “Your body can make better use of the lycopene in tomatoes when they’re cooked as opposed raw,” Alexandra says. You don’t have to be a chef— some jarred marinara on your fave pasta will do the trick.
MAKE THEM PART OF YOUR A.M.
Veggies aren’t just something to eat during p.m. hours. Kick off your morning with a savory bite: Try full-fat plain Greek yogurt topped with diced cucumber, mango, and granola. Or top eggs with chopped avocados, tomatoes, and peppers.

OWN UP TO YOUR BEHAVIOR “When I got grounded for a bad grade, I was so mad. But instead of fighting with my parents and making things worse, I handed over my phone as asked. After a few hours, I talked to them about what had landed me in phone jail and how I planned to work harder. I also showed accountability by offering to help pay my monthly cell bill. And they gave back my phone right away! I learned the value of admitting when you’re wrong and not taking things for granted.”

EMBRACE GOING TECH-FREE “My phone usually gets taken away because I use it too much. The last time it happened, I decided to enjoy the tech-free month. I ended up having long convos with my siblings— something we rarely do when we all have our faces buried in phones. My parents noticed and gave my cell back early because they saw me lose my dependency on it—which of course was the point. But what’s even better is that I was reminded of what I’m missing when I don’t take the time to look up.”

A
A few years ago, I was just a typical teen who spent hours in front of my computer watching Kingsley and Jenna Marbles on YouTube. I also followed them—and tons of other social media stars—on Instagram and Twitter, and it seemed as if they had it all: successful channels, good friends (each other!), and amazing lives in Los Angeles. So in June of 2015, when I made the decision to move from Miami to Los Angeles so I could grow my Vine following, I assumed I’d end up with the same incredibly happy, friend-filled life. What actually happened was quite the opposite.

I decided to start distancing myself from the squad. When they asked me to do a video collab and I said no, we got into a huge fight. I realized then that I valued our offline relationship more than they did. I felt so betrayed. After that, I tried going out to parties and events so I could meet new people, but I would always end up surrounded by a bunch of social media stars who, I suspected, were looking for followers rather than friends. The glamorous scene I saw from afar turned out to be nothing but a bunch of people willing to do anything just to make it—even if that meant acting fake in order to boost their numbers. At the same time, I was having a falling out with my BFF back in Miami, so the only person I could turn to as a friend was my manager. As awesome as it was to have him to talk to, I missed having a girlfriend who totally gets me and what I’m going through. One day, I had the worst period cramps ever, and I knew I couldn’t tell him about them, so I ranted on Snapchat instead. My guard is up now because I don’t want to get hurt again, but I really do want to trust people and have close relationships. It’s a tough balance. Don’t get me wrong: There are tons of people I like to hang out with, but I’m sad that even though I have millions of followers, I don’t feel like I have a deep level of friendship with anyone. I do know that once I find that person, I’ll appreciate how valuable it is to have someone I can be my real, silly, unfiltered, makeup-free self around— no cameras required. THE HOOKUPBOI Random pings for a meetup, with no selfie game, are a sign a person wants action, not a relationship. “I send a snap like this if I just think you’re hot,” says Adam, 17. A crush who’s serious about you will try to make an emotional connection. WHAT YOU GET

Clues someone just wants to stay in the squad zone? Group shots (especially with other girls), goofy expressions, silly lenses, and anything else purely funny. Erica, 19, adds “I also make sure I’m never the one who’s initiating the conversation.”
Black screen + short amount of text = move on! You’re barely getting a response (and if you do, it’s this thoughtless). “I’ve done this to hint I’m just not interested,” says Nick, 18. Find someone who is ready to get on a streak with you!

Zendaya Coleman targets haters with precision and never misses when it comes to the red carpet. Her confidence is her best weapon— and she wants you to feel just as powerful. Boom! By JESSICA HERNDON Photographs by JAMES WHITE Styled by AYA KANAI

It’s been a long day for Zendaya. After waking up early to shoot her TV series, K.C. Undercover, the singer-actress is back at her modern L.A. home. She’s chilling with her dad (her parents live in the house, too); her miniature schnauzer, Noon; and her K.C. costar Kamil McFadden, when her mom texts her from the kitchen that her guest is there. Moments later Zendaya appears, looking as cool and laid-back as you’d imagine: She’s dressed in cozy gray sweats and wearing glasses. She has her hair in a messy bun and not a trace of makeup on her face. Most celebs, let alone people, probably wouldn’t show up for an interview looking this real, but that’s what makes Zendaya Coleman (whose first name means “to give thanks” in Shona, a Bantu language of Zimbabwe) so awesome. “I would go out to eat like this!” she admits while sitting at her kitchen table. “I’m not one of those people who really cares about what other people think. I’m just happy with who I am.” Zendaya’s confidence is a big reason the 20-year-old has a legion of ZSwaggers—more than 11 million followers combined on Instagram and Twitter—and why she’s become a legit role model for how to stand up for yourself. Remember how she reacted to criticism of her dreadlocks?
ZENDAYA REVEALS THE THINKING BEHIND HER SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS.
Or her amazing response to being called anorexic by a comedian? When it comes to dealing with haters, she says, “It’s not about what happens, but how you handle it and turn it into something that can be positive, inspirational, or enlightening.” She has also learned how to handle the critical voices in her own head. “I remember when I was in middle school, I would get test anxiety,” she says. “My teachers had to take me out of the classroom and talk to me because I thought, If I don’t get an A+, I’m going to lose my s***.” Nowadays, Zendaya still gets anxious, but that doesn’t hold her back. “Like, the way I see it in my head, I should be nothing shy of Beyoncé,” she says. “But you can’t freakin’ put that much pressure on yourself. That doesn’t mean don’t strive for the best, because you should. But don’t kill yourself over it. Sometimes I need to realize that I’m human. I’m doing pretty good.” “Pretty good” is an understatement. Aside from crushing it on the Disney Channel, Zendaya is a red-carpet queen, a published author, and one of the faces of CoverGirl. Plus, she has a Barbie in her likeness and a shoe line, and she’s hard at work on her second album. Next year, she’ll hit the big screen in her first major movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming. But first,
1 / LOOK YOUR BEST “Get a good photographer and give instructions to let them know what you like. I use my mom and I tell her, ‘Hold the camera right here.’ It’s okay to stare at yourself for a while and figure out your good side, so you go to it right away.”
2 / BE SELECTIVE “I’m kind of anal about posting. If I take a picture of my whole body and my toe looks weird, I’m not posting it. Someone will zoom in on my toe and be like, ‘What the hell is wrong with her toe?’ I don’t criticize myself, but it’s going to bother me.”
she’s ready to talk about her own super-slaying ways. You’re really coming into your own, but you still live with your parents, and your dad helps guide your career. How do you find independence?
I’m very much in charge of my career and what happens in my life. I have the final say in everything I do. But I still listen to my parents, and I respect them. And they respect me too. They have never sheltered me from anything. They expose me to every aspect of my business—they want me to know where my money is going. Do you guys fight about anything?
Yeah! Of course! We fight about stupid stuff. For example, my dad just yelled at me because my dog took a poop in his man cave. But it’s fine. He’s a puppy. Okay, let’s talk about something totally different: your style. What inspires your look?
My style is very undefined. I made it that way so that I can do whatever I want. I love dressing up just as much as I love wearing casual dingy sweatpants, some good old used socks, and a nice little T-shirt. It’s just different sides of myself. It’s liberating. So many young women are concerned with how other people think they look. I would not
3 / KEEP IT VARIED “On Instagram, I show my fashion, makeup, and also things I’m passionate about. It’s very real and honest. I section out my selfies— pages and pages of someone’s face is annoying. I post memes now and then to spice things up.”
4 / WORK THE APPS “People can really see my personality on Snapchat. I like to be funny and make people laugh. Twitter is where I interact with my fans and get to know what they’re into. I kind of stalk them. I’ll send a little ‘Hey, girl’ or favorite their tweet.”

be able to rock a mullet to the Grammys if I was afraid of what people thought. That was very ’80s punk. You often flip your style with wigs.
I’ve been working with my stylist, Law Roach, since I was 13. We’re very inspired by past looks—we’re just doing a different version of it. I get inspired by random things I see. I might stumble across an old picture of Cher or Bianca Jagger, or I could be inspired by someone I see walking down the street. TOP AND TROUSERS Barbara Bui, barbarabui.com. Was there a point where you weren’t confident enough to wear something daring?
Absolutely. When I started working with Law, I was a little bit more reserved. There was a time when I picked out my own outfits for red-carpet events and I was a little like, What are people going to think? What do I wear? But after experimenting so much and growing up, that just kind of slowly went away. Do you read the comments on pictures and things you post on social media?
I’m not really a comment reader because what I post on Instagram is about my outfit or my faith, and those are things that no one can tell me anything about. If I like it, I like it. But if I’m posting something that is political, sometimes I do read comments to see what people are talking about and thinking. 75

76
So you don’t care if you see negative comments?
No. But it also depends. If they attack my character as a human being, that affects me more than like, “Ugly outfit. Change your hair.” When people question my integrity, that’s what bothers me. Even then, I have to remember that it’s a stranger and that person is going through something that I have no idea about. I think social media has helped us communicate when we’re using it for good, but it’s also desensitized us. You see a profile, not a human being. That’s why when I respond to haters, I try to make it as fun and lighthearted as possible. But a lot of people find courage to say terrible stuff on the Internet. I have more respect for people in the old days. Back then, if you didn’t like me, you’d have to come up to me and tell me you don’t like me. Now you just tweet it. That really doesn’t mean anything.
to shine light on their issues. I think that’s important, especially being a black woman, which I do identify as. It’s important to use the special place that I’ve been given not only to uplift all people but also to uplift my black side. That is the side that has to do the most fighting. [She reveals a necklace that’s been covered by her T-shirt.] I wear Queen Nefertiti around my neck because she was one of the first queens from Africa who ran things. Being biracial, have you ever had a hard time finding makeup to match your skin tone?
I’ve had the horror stories—I’ve been orange. I think a lot of times when makeup artists see a mixed girl, they just pick the middle shade, which is not my shade. In fact, I’m probably like four different colors. I do my makeup myself now because I know the products I like and what works for my skin.
Can you remember an instance of something that really stung?
Let’s talk relationships. Do you have any good dating lessons?
Not really. I feel like I brush it off pretty quickly. I gotta walk the walk and talk the talk. I can’t be like, “Be confident and brush things off and move forward,” and not actually do it in my own life.
You can’t be mad at yourself for feeling and living. I’m a very guarded person, but you can’t be so guarded that you don’t allow yourself to feel. If you get hurt along the way, that happens! It makes you stronger; you move forward. Love can be a great thing. Also, you can’t force anybody to be what you want them to be. You’ll be a lot happier when you feel like you don’t need to change someone.
There have been harsh comments directed at your parents’ looks. How do you cope with that?
You can’t fight fire with fire. But I can’t just act like the comments don’t exist. My mom is a prime example of someone who fought to find herself. She lost 80-something pounds and is now super-healthy and coming into her own. I’ve always thought she was beautiful, and now she sees it too. Your mother is white and your father is black. What’s that been like for you?
It’s awesome. I’m proud of who I am, and my parents instilled that in me. I can’t sit here and pretend like being half white doesn’t give me privilege, though, because it does. I don’t go through the same struggles as my darker brothers and sisters. But I can use that privilege
When it comes to friendships, how do you deal with drama?
I don’t play that. Friend drama—those two words shouldn’t even go together. Your friends should hold you down. If your friends are causing you drama, maybe they’re not your friends. I have a very small circle. They are all people I grew up with, met through the people I grew up with, or am literally related to. My best friend is my niece [her oldest brother’s daughter]. She’s 21. Bella Thorne is still one of your close friends, right?
Yeah! We’ll post things to each other on social media, but we know everybody’s
looking at that, so if she wants to talk, she’ll call me or text me. You missed out on going to a regular high school because you were working full-time. Anything you wish you’d experienced?
I kind of wanted to go to prom, but I heard Beyoncé missed her prom. So if Beyoncé can miss her prom, I can miss my prom. You’ve accomplished so much at a young age. How does it feel?
Honestly, I think it’s awesome. Sometimes I forget how young I am. Sometimes I feel like I’m like an 80-year-old grandma because I don’t like to go out. Going out to me is staying in with friends, watching Netflix, cracking jokes, ordering some food. Easy. So you don’t think you’ll turn up for your 21st birthday next year?
I’m just not a “turner-upper.” It doesn’t sound fun to me. I don’t like not being in control of my surroundings. You always seem so confident. Are there ever moments when you feel insecure?
I hold myself to such ridiculously high standards that if I don’t meet or surpass them, I doubt myself. That fear of not being as good as you want to be can limit you from doing things. I feel a lot of people doubt me in the acting space because I’ve never done a big movie, and that’s why I’m excited about doing Spider-Man—I have no preconceived notions about how I’m supposed to deal with it. But I auditioned just like everybody else, and clearly I did something right. Any advice for girls trying to feel as self-assured as you are?
It takes time. Nobody just wakes up and says, “I’m confident and life is great.” It’s a process. It’s okay to be like, “Dang, I’m the bomb.” That’s not conceited. I can’t say that I am there with everything in my life, but there are certain things that I am secure about. You just have to take time to love yourself and be in love with yourself. 77

“In high school, I took a lot of risks with fashion,” says the vlogger, 19. “Knowing that people liked my style and followed me”—he had 200,000 YouTube subscribers by his senior year—“gave me confidence.” That number has grown to over 1.4 million, and Jack takes the power of his influence seriously. “I share things I’m really passionate about, like music or brands, and fans will take my word for it. “My friends are all into sports, but I could never figure out what I really loved,” says 15-year-old Ariel Martin. “When I found Musical.ly, I realized being creative and making videos is my thing.” Today she’s the top user on the app, with 11 million followers— and she can’t believe it. “It’s mind-blowing that people know me outside the Internet,” she says. “A year ago, I was watching the Teen Choice Awards on TV and thinking it would be cool to go one day.” This year? She went—and won. “I was so excited and very touched!”

Fave Snapchat Star
There’s no doubt about it: Kylie is the queen—make that king—of Snapchat. The 19-year-old has one of the most viewed accounts on the platform, but sometimes she forgets how many eyes are truly on her. “I never really think about it until I’ll do a hair color and then I’ll see all my fans in the same hair color,” she’s said. “It’s just crazy how much influence I have—it’s cool!”
Fave DIY Guru
“When I was in college, I started posting videos of the decor I made for my dorm room,” Remi, 21, says. “My sorority sisters would go to Michaels and girls would stop them and say, ‘Are you in Remi’s sorority? I’m here to make her DIY projects for myself!’ ” Remi’s following has since expanded offcampus: Her videos have been viewed more than 76 million times—and she’s grown in the process too. “If you watch my first video, I was very shy and quiet,” she says. “Now I talk so much. Without YouTube, I wouldn’t have discovered how much confidence I really have.”

What’s it really like to be around your identical twin all the time? According to the 16-year-old Dolans, it’s actually pretty great. “We’ve worked together surprisingly well,” Grayson (right) says. “And if we do argue, we just rock, paper, scissors to resolve it.” One thing they always agree on is how insane it is to get mobbed wherever they go. “It’s a surreal feeling every time people take time out of their days to come find us,” says Ethan. Being heartthrobs, however, doesn’t make dating any easier. “Neither of us has ever been good at talking to girls,” he adds. “We’d like to have girlfriends, but it’s not as easy as it looks!”

“My mission is to make other people feel accepted and validated,” explains Ashley, 24, whose ABC’s of LGBT videos define all types of identities and explore sexual and gender diversity. She came out online in 2013 and says, “There are a lot of words I understand now that would have been incredibly helpful for me to know when I was a kid. Today, it’s so much easier for people to find community. You’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, other people feel this way? I’m not the only one?’ And it makes you feel a little bit less alone.”

Fave Crossover Star
Here’s how Andrea, 21, explains her success: “I owe it all to Bieber! I posted my first video in 2009 for a contest to meet him. I didn’t win, but it got, like, three million views and made me want to keep making videos.” That includes Sickhouse, the horror movie that played out entirely on her Snapchat story (and has been viewed over 100 million times). The hardest part of the shoot? Not being able to Snap her actual daily life. “It was so weird—I’m so used to being on it 24-7!”

The Tokyo-based 14-year-old is a fashion rebel: “I don’t like how Japanese people are strict and tell me how to dress.” So instead, she rocks #OOTDs mostly made of eclectic vintage finds. “I don’t think I look my best in something too sweet or cute,” says Mappy (whose Insta handle reflects her love of bebop jazz piano). “It doesn’t fit me.” She does, however, wear an adorable grin in many of her photos, which could be one key to her international success. “People like me because I’m happy.”

I TRIED TO CATCH MY BF CHEATING
“When I thought the guy I was dating was talking to someone else, I made a fake Instagram account and followed him. For the profile pic, I used a hot girl I found online, then I posted random things in the feed, like Drake memes. I sent my boyfriend a flirty DM and he messaged back a heart-eyed emoji. It seemed like I was right about him—but then he stopped responding. A few weeks later, our actual relationship fizzled too. Looking back, I was so immature!” –SKYE, 16

I Keep Track of Selfie Likes
“My friends and I love taking pictures of ourselves. No one outside of our circle knows this, but we take it so seriously that we have a shared document with a list of selfie rules (like only one bathroom pic a week), and I keep a note in my phone of who gets the most likes each day. I’m called the ‘Selfie CEO.’ If people at school found out about our system, they’d think we were crazy.” –EMILY, 13
I Was an Online Bully
“Freshman year, my friends made the volleyball team and I didn’t. They were always busy so I was alone a lot and I took out my frustration online. I began leaving mean comments on random message boards to stir up drama, but then it spiraled into picking fights with other users. Once I left my computer screen up, and my mom saw some of the things I had posted. I played it off like it wasn’t me and she let it go. But I felt so guilty that I stopped commenting. I’m still embarrassed about it.” –LEAH, 15 86
I SECRETLY JOINED A GAMING COMMUNITY
“I’m part of the preppy crowd at school. I like my friends, but there is one thing I’m into that doesn’t really fit with our vibe: I’m an online gamer. I guess I’m scared to admit that to them because I’m worried I’ll be judged. A lot of nights when my friends are sending funny Snapchats or having a group text, I’m busy strategizing how to win combat games. Whenever they ask what I’m doing, I usually just say I’m working on my homework. Maybe one day I’ll fess up about my hobby so I don’t always have to lie—it doesn’t make me feel great.” –ELIZA, 17
I CATFISHED MY FRIEND
“I was majorly crushing on a kid at school. The problem was that my friend liked him too, and it seemed like he was into her. I was jealous, so I created a fake account to try to pull them apart. I pretended to be a football player from another school, and I started DM’ing my friend and acting as if I were interested in her. She started talking to me about it—like, ‘Do you know this guy?’ (I know my face turned a million shades of red.) My plan sort of worked: She lost interest in the boy I was into, but he still wasn’t interested in me! When my friend got suspicious about the fake guy, I panicked and shut down the account. It wasn’t worth it.” –JADE, 17
I Created an Alter Ego
“I want to be an actress, so to learn how to get into character I created a fake sorority-girl Insta. It was fun! I even posted a fake Bid Day picture. But only random spam accounts followed me, so I got bored and quit.” –MEGAN, 18
I’m Only Out on My Finsta
“I primarily identify as queer, but I’m not technically ‘out.’ My parents and other family members follow all my social media accounts, and I use my Instagram for work. So I decided to make a finsta because I wanted a place where I could share more personal moments with my close friends. I’ve put up a lot of pictures of me and my girlfriend hanging out—and I mean a lot. On my regular Insta, I’ve posted 43 times and on my finsta, I’ve posted 369 times. I love the freedom of not having to be so guarded.” –MAEVE, 19
I Launched a Stealth Cyber Campaign
“A girl at my school was always getting picked on. It made me sad, so my junior year I created an anonymous blog where I would post compliments about her. At first, I expected people to say ‘Did you hear about that lame blog?’ but they liked it! It got so popular that I started accepting submissions from classmates who wanted to post something nice about someone else. I decided to shut the blog down after I graduated, but I’d love to start up something similar at my college.” –ASHLEY, 18

Most people use Instagram for fun— but for model Alexis Jae, it’s been a career game changer. Last year, her signature bleach-blonde do and sick beauty and fashion skills (she also designs clothes) caught the eye of superstar makeup artist Pat McGrath, who handpicked Alexis to help launch McGrath’s Phantom 002 collection alongside some of New York’s top online influencers. My selfie secret: Know what angles and lighting make you feel most confident. My style: Futuristic goth grandma. I’m inspired by everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Paris Hilton and Rihanna. My look-alike: Everyone says I look like FKA Twigs! I definitely see it. My mantra: Always be yourself, no matter how different you are. Only you can define yourself. My beauty must-have: I wear lots of wigs, especially orange and white bobs. It’s fun to change it up for a night. My healthy hair trick: Since I get my hair bleached, I use lots of oils and hair masks to keep it soft. I can’t live without: Cool nail art. I just had a mani with iridescent butterfly wings as accents, which was so fun. My favorite emoji: The lipstick kiss. So fab!

If you’re addicted to Musical.ly, you probably recognize Loren Gray Beech, one of the lip-synching platform’s top musers. Her popularity on the app (eight million followers and counting) helped her land on a recent summer tour with other social media stars, not to mention a full-blown modeling career. What’s next? Singing for real. “Social media doesn’t last forever,” she says, “but it’s a great jumping-off point.” My busy schedule: Every day, on top of online school, I do three posts on Musical.ly, one or two on Insta, and I tweet and Snap all the time. I post a few times per month on YouTube. The minute you stop posting, activity dies. My new life: I get stopped a lot! I was at an amusement park recently, and every time we got off a ride, 10 girls were waiting at the bottom. It makes going out harder, but it’s so fun. My film obsession: The Batman movies—I’ve even done a Musical.ly in Joker makeup. My Insta advice: Pick one filter to use on all your photos or it will look messy. Right now, I’m only using high contrast.
@lukasabbat Age: 18 Hometown: New York, NY
Model and style influencer Luka Sabbat doesn’t understand how he got famous. “I was just posting on Instagram and hanging out with my friends,” he says, laughing. Now he can check off two amazing things from his bucket list: being in one of Kanye West’s Yeezy fashion shows and appearing in an Adidas ad in Times Square. And if that’s not enough, he has 200,000 followers and hangs with a super-cool crew (including Jaden and Willow Smith, Anwar Hadid, and the Jenner sisters). But Luka says the best is yet to come. “I haven’t
blown up yet,” he promises. “Everything I’ve done so far . . . this is just the beginning.” My mentor: Virgil Abloh [fashion designer, DJ, and Kanye’s creative director] has helped me out so much. He got me into Kanye’s show. My signature style: Very uniform-like. Right now, I’m obsessed with pairing athletic pants with a black shirt and combat boots or sneakers. My fashion inspo: I get lots of ideas from all kinds of movies— even cartoons. My go-to Insta trick: Always ask people with the same creative vision as yours to take your photos. My motto: You have to be a leader, not a follower. Pave your own way. My next project: I just launched a capsule collection of jewelry with Gianni Monini. I want to do even more creative-directing and styling.

In this exclusive sneak peek at Melissa de la Cruz’s new novel, star student Jasmine’s good news ends up ripping open a family secret and tearing apart her identity. Illustration by Samantha Hahn
ad opens the envelope slowly. Mom leans over his shoulder. They are completely silent as they read the letter from the United States National Scholars Program, holding the future I worked so hard for in their hands. I expected my father to jump up from the table and hug me and my mother to scream and start calling all my aunties back in the Philippines to brag about me. But neither of them says anything. In fact, they look like they just received the worst kind of news instead of the best news ever. Okay. Maybe they’re so happy they’re shocked into silence? “Isn’t it amazing?” I reach over and pull the acceptance form from the envelope. “Don’t worry, I can fill everything out myself, but I need a copy of my green card so they know I’m accepting the scholarship and going to D.C. for the reception.” They look at each other with concern. I’m so confused by their silence. Isn’t this the moment they’ve been waiting for my whole life? What is it? Are they worried about the plane fare to D.C.? Maybe they don’t want me to go to there alone? Is that it? 100
Mom pushes the dinner dishes to the side of the table, not meeting my gaze. “We have something to tell you, neneng, and you have to believe us when we say we’ve always wanted the best for you,” she says. “We’ve tried to do everything right.” Dad just keeps staring at the letter like the words don’t make any sense. I thought he would be the proudest of me, of what I’ve done for our family. With this opportunity, I’ll be able to take care of my parents someday. I’ll be able to give them the lives they wanted to give me when we moved to the States eight years ago. “What do you mean?” I ask. “We should have told you sooner, but we didn’t know how,” she says. I sense a glimmer of what my mom is trying to tell me, and I feel a cold shock all over my body. This isn’t just about letting me go to another city on my own.
“So what’s going on, then?” I ask, my breath catching in my throat. Whatever it is, it’s bad.
“What are you saying?” I ask. “What do you mean, tried?” “I don’t like your tone, young lady,” Mom says. “Sorry, Mom, I just don’t know what’s going on. Aren’t you happy for me?” I don’t understand why she’s reacting this way. Almost as if she’s annoyed that I won this scholarship. She’s the one who pushed me so hard—they both did—but the way they’re reacting isn’t making any sense. “Nothing will ever be good enough for you,” I say, almost on the verge of tears. “It’s not fair!” “You don’t know what fair is!” she retorts. Dad doesn’t want any of this. “Stop fighting! Right now.” His eyes have tears in them. “Jasmine, this is an amazing achievement. We’re incredibly proud of you. You know that.” “Okay,” I say. “But there are things that are out of our control that we haven’t told you about, LOVE TO and it’s time we were READ? honest with you,” he Enter for a chance to says. Did Dad lose his job? Is he sick? “You’re scaring me, Daddy.” “It’s not what you think. I’m not sick and neither is your mom.” He knows me so well. “So what’s going on, then?” I ask, my breath catching in my throat. Whatever it is, it’s bad. “You can’t accept this scholarship. I’m so sorry,” he says, putting his hand over mine to comfort me.
“But why not?” I ask, stunned. “Because you don’t have a green card, Jasmine. None of us do.” “So wait. What are you saying? We’re not in America legally? Oh, my God. Please tell me you’re joking.” This can’t be the truth. “No, we’re not joking Jasmine,” Dad says. “We thought a college scholarship would solve everything for you. We didn’t know most of the grants and loans are for citizens or green-card holders.” “But you’re a smart girl,” Mom says, trying to touch my hand. “You’ll find a way, neneng.” I pull away. I know they tried their best, but their best isn’t enough in this case. This is my future, what I’ve worked so hard for, and I’m furious. “No! Getting this scholarship was my way!” “Stop!” Daddy slams his open hand against the table. “You should consider yourself lucky. If someone finds out our papers are fake, our entire family could be deported.” Deported? Oh, my God. I didn’t even think of that. It’s not just about not being able to go to college. We might lose our entire life here. It feels like there’s no ground beneath us, like everything I’ve ever done has been a lie. I’m breaking apart, shattering. Who am I? Where do I belong? I’m not American. I’m not a legal resident. I don’t even have a green card. I’m nothing. Nobody. Illegal. Being a Real Your HBIC playbook The step-by-step you need to turn your idea into the real deal.
Give yourself space
get back in touch with you?”
You may not be ready to dish out for an office, but you should still create a legit work area for yourself. Claim a zone in a corner of your family’s home office, or clear a spot in your room. (Be sure to make your bed every day— being organized does wonders.) And really make it inspiring: Try hanging a vision board.
Don’t be afraid of mistakes
Things are not always going to go right. Facts. But even an epic fail can be good for business. Instead of internalizing it or doubting yourself, write down what you learned, says Megan Grassell, who started the bra company Yellowberry as a teen.
It’s okay to fess up if you aren’t sure
Even as a boss, you may not have all the answers all the time. What’s most important is handling uncertainty with confidence, Grassell says. If there’s a question you can’t answer on the spot, just say, “I’ll look into that. What’s the best way to
Genius advice from entrepreneurs who are crushing it. 102 SEVENTEEN.COM / OCTOBER 2016
Think of your team as your extended family
“I didn’t realize how important having a strong sense of family would be to my career. Family is about loyalty and trust— and that extends to friends and coworkers too. Having that will ground you and help you survive the unexpected challenges in your journey as a business owner.” –Michelle Phan, founder of ipsy
People doing similar things can be your friends
“We’ve seen how strong the entrepreneurial community is, so if we could go back and tell ourselves one thing when we were first starting out, it would be to rely on that network more—for advice, support, and honest feedback.” –Amy Jain and Daniella Yacobovsky, cofounders of BaubleBar
Never stop learning! Download a podcast— try Girlboss Radio or Startup—where other young entrepreneurs share advice.
Hire up
Focus on what you do best, and rely on help to do the rest, Grassell says. If you aren’t great at Web design, don’t waste time trying to wing it. Instead, find someone with smarts in that area who can assist. College students hoping to gain experience are usually up for a temporary gig.
Practice the three-hour rule
Whether you’re dealing with a staffing problem (your part-time help showed up late to work—again) or a rude e-mail from a customer, don’t go on a rapid-fire tirade. Take some time (Megan says three hours is her magic number) to calm your nerves and think about how to best approach the situation before you deal with it.
Bossy is totally not a bad word
“Having some hustle will take you really far. I learned that you can never be shy when it comes to promoting yourself and your business. If you want something, like a review or a mention in your fave magazine, you’ve got to go for it and just ask.” –Dani Beckerman, founder of Jars by Dani

Get your vibe right
Be an equal opportunist when it comes to social media. To reach the most people, you need to be on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter, but don’t post the same thing everywhere. Tailor what you’re posting to that specific platform.
Don’t be afraid to talk to people who are already owning it. If you have a fashion app, send it along to your fave fashion bloggers and Instagrammers to check out, and maybe they’ll promote it on their channels—or suggest a meetup.
MASTER YOUR POWER POSE Whether you have a game-changing meeting—or are heading up a group project at school—here’s how to look like a leader.
EYES Always look a person in the eyes as you speak— just not for so long that it gets awkward. Take note of their iris color, then look away. SHOULDERS Posture plays a role in how you feel. Keep your shoulders back for an incommand vibe.
Share positive content. Making people smile will help them remember your brand. On that note: Keep your site profile updated, whether it’s with photos that portray your aesthetic or with a bio that’s on point. It might be your first impression.
MOUTH Say goodbye to RBF! And don’t speaksofast that no one knows what you’re saying.
ARMS Avoid crossing them when speaking to someone else so you don’t come across as uninterested. Place your hands on your hips instead.
QUIZ
how’s your communication game? You’ll have to talk to people. A lot. Take this quiz to find out how good you are at sending a clear message.
1. You prefer electronic communication. Always. True False
2. If someone e-mails you, you sometimes take a few days to respond. True False

HANDS Major key alert: A firm handshake is a must because it shows confidence. Hold your grip for three seconds. LEGS If you’re getting ready to ask or say something big, don’t take a seat! Standing will make you feel more self-assured.
While some things can be handled electronically, to be a solid communicator you need to up your in-personconvo quota. Otherwise you leave room for things to be misunderstood.
MOSTLY FALSE PHONE If you’re interacting with people, it should be: A) silenced, and B) not in your hand.
You’re talking the talk when it comes to IRL exchanges. Score one for you! But don’t be afraid to use e-mail—or text or group messaging. It often helps to follow up a convo with something in writing.

“I was hanging with some male coworkers after our shift ended. They got on the topic of hybrid cars—which I drive—and how awful they think those are. I thought they’d make fun of me, so I stayed quiet about mine. After their convo, I got up to say bye, and then two of the guys offered to walk me to my car. I didn’t want them to see it, and I told them no, but it was late so they insisted. There was a Corvette parked next to my car, so I acted like it was mine. The boys were impressed! I dug through my purse as if I were searching for my keys, wishing they’d leave, but they didn’t. I panicked and did the unthinkable: I tried to open the Corvette’s door, hoping they’d go away if I just got in it—but the alarm went off! I ran to my car and shouted ‘I’m sorry!’ and sped off. They still haven’t let me live it down.”

SHAME GAME
Oh. My. Awkward.
A“OnLOW NOTE my way to choir class, I started to feel a little queasy. I went to see the nurse, but she just gave me crackers and bubbly water and sent me on my way. In the choir room, I took my spot in the bleachers, a row above the boys everyone in our grade is into. I was feeling okay until we started our do-re-mi warm-up. I made it to the second round—but then I opened my mouth and threw up all over the guys! I was so humiliated. I ran back to the nurse to tell her ‘I told you so.’ And now I’m forever known as the girl who barfed on the grade’s hottest guys.”
Prank-Call Fail “After my friend’s BF broke up with her, a bunch of us decided to prank call him. We were really fired up, so I quickly went to his contact info, hit the call button, and turned on speakerphone. When he answered, I started talking in my weirdest accent. But before I could say much, he goes, ‘Sami, what are you doing?!?’ and hung up. I’d forgotten to block my number before calling! My stomach dropped and my friends started cracking up. Worse, the guy’s cute older brother, who I had a crush on, ignored me after that!”
Slippery Mess “I was out with my best friend and her family for pizza. I went to the counter to get napkins, and on the way back, I had to walk past the bathrooms. Apparently, someone had clogged the toilet in the men’s room, because there was water flowing out from underneath the door. I didn’t notice it until I slipped and fell right into the puddle! Not only was I embarrassed, but I was also seriously grossed out and nervous to tell her family what I’d fallen into. They laughed and helped me clean up, but it was so traumatic.”
ME-OUCH “I went to a Halloween party as Catwoman, dressed in a skintight black jumpsuit with spaghetti straps, knee-high black boots, and a cat-ears headband. The jumpsuit had a zipper that ran all the way up the front, which unfortunately was kind of cheap. All night I was fidgeting with it to make sure it stayed closed, but I hoped it would be fine. The party filled up with people, and when I finally spotted my crush, I approached him and started a convo. It was going great until I tried to tug my zipper up as a precaution—and broke it instead! My goal had been modesty, but I ended up with the jumpsuit top completely open. Talking to my crush was nerve-racking enough, so when this happened, I was mortified! I almost started crying out of fear that he’d start laughing at me. Instead, he looked around awkwardly and showed me where the bathroom was. We barely talked again!”
SLOW TO RISE I was filming the movie Cowgirl’s Story, and on the last day, the entire cast and crew was on set. In one scene, I was supposed to walk out of a shot, looking very distraught. As I was moving, my foot got caught in a floorboard and I totally bit it—but it was a very slow fall. It took, like, five seconds, and then I just lay there because I was so embarrassed. Everyone was really concerned that I was hurt, but I was like, ‘Guys, no, it’s okay.’ The worst part: It wasn’t the first time I’d fallen on set!

heart and ask, What will you contribute to the world? I knew my purpose was to create and share. I started teaching Pilates to pay the bills, built a community on YouTube, and designed a super-glam yoga bag (which combined my passion for fashion with my love of fitness). My big break came when one of my bags made it into a national magazine. It was a sign to keep going, and even if I failed, I knew I would be okay because at least I’d tried. Eventually, I had the confidence
to create and hand-design my own athletic line, Popflex Active. We totally sold out a few weeks after the launch, and it felt so good to see the difficult choices I’d made in the past pay off. It’s wild how things work out when you put your heart into a project. I’m so grateful that I followed my dreams, because I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t. Looking back, I know that my parents wanted what they thought was best for me (I’m happy to say our relationship is in a good place now), but they didn’t have all the answers. Other people can offer you advice, but sometimes you have to take a risk and make the best choices for you. After all, nobody knows you better than you know yourself.

When I was a teen, my hardworking immigrant parents made it clear that there was only one career path for me to take: I was going to become a doctor. The only problem? I didn’t want to be a doctor. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of being a fashion designer. But when I was 16 and told my parents that, my dad looked me straight in the eyes and said, “You won’t make money, you won’t be successful, and you’ll have no friends.” Since he was my dad—and I was a very obedient daughter—I figured he must be right. But when I got to college and started my biology classes, my heart just wasn’t in it. I’d break down crying almost every day and call my parents, begging them to let me change my major. “I don’t want to do this,” I pleaded, but they stayed firm. The summer before senior year, when I was supposed to get an internship in the medical field, I secretly got a fashion one instead. It gave me hands-on design experience, and it was one of the most magical times of my life. I knew I couldn’t focus on science after that. In the middle of the next semester, I dropped my organic chemistry class, which meant I wouldn’t be able to take the MCAT. (It’s basically the SAT for medical school.) It felt empowering to pursue a career I loved, but when my family found out I might not end up with the money and prestige they wanted for me, they were furious. They felt I had dishonored them, and we didn’t talk for a few years. I was sad, but having that distance away from their influence was a great thing for me. It was a time I got to dig deep inside my
