CEO MESSAGE

Dear Valued Arts Center Patrons,

Like many arts organizations nationwide, the Lawrence Arts Center continues to grapple with the aftermath of the pandemic. Despite our relentless efforts, earned revenue remains well below pre-pandemic levels.

As the cornerstone of creativity in Lawrence, we will weather this storm and remain a crucial third space for the community. Your ongoing support is vital, and we’re committed to being transparent about the changes we need to make:

TUITION INCREASE

We’re increasing tuition for all classes, but we want to assure you that financial aid will still be available for those in need. We remain dedicated to providing access to the arts.

MEMBERSHIP CHANGES

Membership prices will increase, and a tuition discount will no longer be included. However, members can still enroll a week early – a coveted benefit. Membership fees will continue to support our financial aid fund for those in need.

If these changes impact you or your family’s ability to engage with the arts, I encourage you to apply for financial aid. We generously consider circumstances beyond income in our decision-making. Visit lawrenceartscenter.org to learn more and apply.

As we strive to navigate these changes while keeping the arts accessible to all, thank you for your understanding and continued support during this period. If you have questions or want to make a gift, don’t hesitate to contact me.

To the future,

Introducing the 2024-2025 Artists-in-Residence

See pages 23 and 25 for classes taught by Vincent & Anthony

Two talented artists are selected for our residency program each year to create new work while teaching and sharing their expertise with the Arts Center’s students and wider community. We look forward to the fresh perspectives our resident artists bring to Lawrence and the Arts Center through classes, artist talks, workshops, and community partnerships.

Generously supported by

VINCENT “SNIPER” FRIMPONG

Ceramics Artist-in-Residence

Vincent “Sniper” Frimpong is a contemporary ceramic artist from Accra, Ghana, West Africa. His works explore the question, “What does it mean to be an African?” Using mixed-media installations, Frimpong draws upon the richness of African history and his personal history while simultaneously contemplating contemporary concerns. This approach creates space for open dialogue that links the past, present and future for Ghanaians. View Sniper’s work at snipersart.com.

ANTHONY CORRARO

Printmaking Artist-in-Residence

Anthony Corraro’s work utilizes the repeatable process of printmaking alongside ephemeral materials like hand-dyed floor dust pushed through a silkscreen to produce fragile and immediately ephemeral prints. In this process of creation and decay, he seeks to challenge the general notion of art being a static experience.

FINDING LA YARDA | Group Exhibition

Finding La Yarda is an immersive multimedia art experience recreating a room from La Yarda, the housing unit built for Mexican American railroad workers in Lawrence, KS, from 1920-1951. Using film, sound, art, and digital storytelling practices, Finding La Yarda brings oral history to life by taking audiences on a cultural journey through time and place. Contributing Artists include Justin Favela, Ann Dean, Jonathan Christensen Caballero, Brenna Buchanan Young, Peter Jasso, and Marlo Angell.

This project is produced by the Lawrence Arts Center by a sub-award from Stories for All: A Digital Storytelling Project for the Twenty-First Century, an initiative hosted by the Hall Center for the Humanities in partnership with the Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities at the University of Kansas and supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Justin Favela’s participation is made possible by visiting artist grant support from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission.

A to Z | Group Exhibition

Rediscover the alphabet from A to Z. In this unique show, 26 artists each turn a single letter into a striking piece of art. Using lines, shapes, and historical references, they create compelling stories inspired by their chosen letter. Don’t miss this creative journey where every letter presents a fresh perspective in a variety of mediums.

Participating Artists: Kathryn Combs, Eric Conrad, Alycia Earhart, Barry Fitzgerald, Joelle Ford, Matthew Willie Garcia, Archie Scott Gobber, Susan Grace, Blanca Herrada, Peregrine Honig, Alicia Kelly, Kris & Sabrina Kuksi, Matthew Lord, Chris Millspaugh, Ursula Minor, Brittany Noriega, Anne Patterson, Wayne Propst, Eric Sall, Pat Slimmer, Kent Smith, Lori Stanziola, Aaron Storck, Juniper Tangpuz, David Titterington, and Dave Van Hee

BOTTLES

Group Exhibition

Bottles pulls together a wide range of approaches to the bottle form through contemporary ceramics. The bottle form has been a staple form for ceramic artists to create for hundreds of years. These forms can simultaneously help decorate a space and be utilitarian. Artists invited to participate in this exhibit utilize a variety of construction techniques and firing methods to create their ceramic vessels. Bottles will culminate in a rich and varied grouping of ceramic bottles created by a dynamic roster of artists.

FUEGO, FORMA, Y CULTURA

Curated by Blanca Herrada

Fuego, Forma y Cultura features eight renowned and emerging Latin-identifying ceramic artists from across the country. The selected works celebrate the richness and diversity of each artist’s Latin culture. This exhibit explores themes of identity, migration, social justice, and spirituality, aiming to foster appreciation and understanding of Latin American heritage while challenging stereotypes.

Participating Artists: April Felipe, Paz Gajardo, Guillermo Guardia, Salvador Jiménez-Flores, Kimberly LaVonne, Horacio Rodriguez, & José Sierra

STEVEN DRAGAN

People & Patterns

Kansas City-based artist Steven Dragan’s paintings capture people and places through an architect’s lens. In his “figures” collection, he represents people with minimal brush strokes. This artistic approach grew out of a background in architectural rendering. In this series, that functional artistry turns into a type of play that explores patterns, scenes of leisure, and our instinct to assign meaning with minimal input.

CONNIE EHRLICH

Ancient Process, Forgotten Art Form

Icons are quiet, sacred objects of luminescent beauty that exist between the physical and spiritual worlds. The icons in this exhibition are rooted in the 15th-century Russian School of Iconography and based on Byzantine prototypes. They are painted using traditional egg tempera with natural pigments and genuine gold leaf on wood panels.
