THE LBT PEOPLE
KAREN O’NEILL Deputy Director
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT THE LBT? That’s a good question. I am kind of a man for all seasons, administratively speaking. I work behind the scenes as an office manager, senior administrator and assistant to the Director. WHAT DOES THE LBT MEAN TO YOU? I love this place. There is nothing to compare with live theatre, and having such a wealth of entertainment practically on my doorstep is one of my favourite things about this town. WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON? Circus Tsuica’s now or never and a festival both seem like incredible, unique events. And I love a good story, so the whole of the drama offer is right up my street, especially hard times and rita, sue and bob too.

FILM
BY JOHN GODBER SAT 27 JANUARY
When your life’s a joke, it’s time to stand up. Martin is a man who has failed in many areas of his life, as a screenwriter, as a son, husband and father. Most of his misery has been self-inflicted and partly brought on by his brief affair with an attractive and glamorous film agent. last laugh is part Withnail and I and part Billy Elliot, a story of dark into light, of discovery and revelation but most of all a story of real life. Don't miss this special screening of award-winning writer John Godber's new Northern comedy, which will be introduced live by the director Daniel Cole.

Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a bit of fun, the three start a fling they each think they control. Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play was written in 1982 when she was just 19. It’s a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, and hungry for adult adventure. Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, rita, sue and bob too famously became a cult film. ‘A timely revival of Andrea Dunbar's lively and still-shocking coming of age play’ the stage

MR DARCY LOSES THE PLOT TUE 6 & WED 7 MARCH
Jane Austen is dreaming up Darcy, a proud, lip-curling handsome creation in very tight pants. But then a door squeaks, a visitor approaches and Jane hastily hides her work. Mr Darcy is left dangling. Left to his own devices he embroiders his own storyline while his creator stitches her quilt. When she returns she finds Darcy is diving into a lake in a clinging white shirt, dancing the Berzerka (a more extreme version of the Masurka) and wrestling carp. ′Britain’s favourite literary lunatics′, LipService, celebrate the work of Jane Austen with their own affectionately irreverent tribute; mr darcy loses the plot.

SCARY BIKERS
HARD TIMES
The Northern Powerhouse, 1854. Imagine a world where imagination is forbidden. Coketown is such a place. Thomas Gradgrind will not permit fanciful thoughts in his school or his home. But what effect will this policy have on his own children, Tom and Louisa? How can he protect them from corrupting influences – especially when the circus comes to town?
A new comedy about life, love and staying on your bike! When retired miner Don and former private school teacher Carol meet at a bereavement group, they thought they’d found a new beginning. But a bike ride through Europe would test their budding romance, and the road to love is rocky when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Join them on their hilarious and heartfelt journey, as they reconcile the past, debate the present and worry about the future. Whether they’re saddle sore in Southampton, blistered in Bordeaux or frazzled in Florence, one thing is for sure – it takes two to tandem! The double bafta and Olivier Award-winning partnership of John Godber and his wife Jane Thornton return to perform on the lbt stage, for the first time since Shafted, in this new play. Ride the wind and dream with air play, a modern spectacle that brings to life the very air we breathe. Flying umbrellas, larger-thanlife balloons, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh until it hurts. air play is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air, transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky, and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters their future. This international spectacle is the creation of husband and wife team Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone and merges their circus and street theatre performance art with the sculptural artistry of Daniel Wurtzel. SUPPORT US The Lawrence Batley Theatre is the home of live performance for Huddersfield and Kirklees. For almost 20 years, community groups and other supporters campaigned for a professional theatre in Huddersfield and their efforts brought about the opening of the lbt in 1994. Serving a population the size of a small city, lbt consistently confounds expectations. Our accessible, high quality, diverse and socially relevant programme incorporates all artforms; and our work in the community celebrates and challenges people’s creativity and interests, irrespective of their background or circumstance. We continue to honour the story of a theatre demanded by the people of Kirklees who had the vision to know what a difference art makes. Please help us to continue to make this happen. Buying tickets for some of the fantastic events showcased in this brochure is one of the ways you can support the lbt, but there are many other ways to make a huge difference to us too!

A FESTIVAL We are having a festival. It’s so new it hasn’t even got a name yet. It’s about who we are and things that matter right now. It’s about new ideas, hearing different voices and celebrating talent.
