the 3-3-3 Rule for new adoptions If you’ve ever started a new job or moved to a new school, you know the feeling. New surroundings, new people, and new rules can take some time to adjust! It’s no different when you bring home your new BFF. The 3-3-3 rule is a general guideline. Every animal is unique and will adjust differently.

Petey’s

Miraculous Recovery Meet Petey, a kitten who endured a rough start but slowly grew stronger and healthier with the help of LHS medical staff and a loving foster home

On the very first day Petey’s future-forever parents started fostering him, they knew he was special. Whether it was his rambunctious nature or his raucous pterodactyl screech of a meow, Petey stole their hearts with his huge personality. Petey’s name was an evolution in and of itself, much like his namesake. From “P. Dactyl,” to PD (Petey) for short, his name became as unique as he is. Meeting Petey today, no one would ever guess that just months before, he was fighting to survive. When Petey came to Lawrence Humane Society, our medical team realized he had a severe case of calicivirus, an upper respiratory infection which left him barely able to eat. Because of this, his little body was half the weight he should have been, and his left eye was swollen completely shut. We feared this kitten’s illness would take his eye, or possibly his life if he didn’t gain weight. But thanks to our generous supporters and medical staff, Petey made a miraculous full recovery– and even got to keep his eye! Little Petey’s mom says now that he is healthy, he loves to make up for lost time by eating food like there’s no tomorrow. In May of 2020, that was a very different story. “He had such a strong will to live,” Petey’s foster-mom-turned-forever-mom said. “He was so opinionated and scrappy, even when he weighed next to nothing and you could feel every rib.” Petey’s foster mom said. Our team of veterinarians, staff and foster families took Petey through the finish line from a worrying case to a story of overcoming. Dr. Pickett, our lead veterinarian said Petey’s will to live was an inspiration to all. “Although Petey was smaller than his littermates and had much more severe symptoms, he proved that he was small but mighty,” Dr. Pickett said. “He was such a fighter.”

Every year, we treat thousands of animals for illness, injury and pain. Often, animals like Petey need special solutions to their ailments. Petey’s family said before he recovered, he needed: Seven weeks of medical supervision; Round the clock care; Special feeding methods with a syringe; And his own special mixture of soft food for minimizing pain. According to Dr. Pickett, in the worst of his fight, Petey had complications from his calicivrus like ocular disease, oral ulceration, respiratory disease and stunted growth. For seven weeks, vets had to monitor his health for proper weight gain. Dr. Pickett said the importance of the Lawrence Humane Society’s network of supporters, staff, volunteers and fosters cannot be understated in cases like these. “It takes an army to get some of these animals over the finish line and on to a forever home,” Dr. Pickett, LHS’s Chief Veterinarian said. “Your time, effort, and money really do go to helping sick, injured, and lost animals.” “It takes an army to get some of these animals over the finish line and on to a forever home,” Dr. Pickett, LHS’s Chief Veterinarian said. Dr. Pickett said it’s crucial for animals like Petey to go into foster home environments to help provide that round-the-clock care. Because of the dedication of his foster parents, Petey was able to flourish with the proper environment his needs called for. “These fosters are very special people that give so much hard work to help these very sick animals survive,” Dr. Pickett said. “It is such a pleasure to work with these wonderful people and try to give them the tools for a successful treatment. Petey’s foster mom became what shelters call a “foster fail” when she adopted Petey from fostering him. She decided to keep him after seeing the bond between Petey and her older cat, Sookie. Petey’s foster mom said Sookie became like Petey’s new cat mom and “taught him how to cat.” So, on behalf of Petey and every animal like him, thank you so much to our fosters! You provide specialized care for animals who need extra support.

PlaNNING and EXECUTING OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR (In the middle of a pandemic!) In a normal year, our big fall fundraiser features a gala and an auction which we call the Fur Ball. Folks can purchase a ticket to the event and come bid on auction packages while they mingle, drink, and eat delicious food. When we first started planning the event in May, the Fur Ball committee and staff members figured this year was going to look extremely different. After all, throwing an event with a hundred people in one space didn’t seem very social distance friendly. After a couple brainstorming sessions, we quickly came up with the idea of a retro old-school telethon complete with Hairy Lewis, a fun spin on the famous Jerry Lewis telethons of year ’s past. The team’s excitement grew as we planned and flushed out ideas. We decided to reach out to our loyal Lawrence Humane community and ask them to submit their own pictures and videos to compile and feature during the show. This was going to be awesome! We also knew we wanted to tell sweet stories of animals that have come through our doors in the last year so we began the planning process for telling these stories. Ideas continued to pour out as we came up with the obstacle course runs and the drive-in experience at Theater Lawrence. These two mini-events provided a safe opportunity for the public to participate and it helped create content to showcase during the show. Early on, Brian Hanni, the voice of the Jayhawks, agreed to be our host. We were so excited to have his lively personality for the evening. The day before the show, he was exposed to COVID and had to quarantine so we quickly scrambled for a solution. Everything had been going way too smoothly, so naturally we had to have a hiccup! Thankfully, we hired an amazing production company called Moonblind Productions to help us with the technical side of broadcasting our show. Between Brian and Moonblind, they were able to figure out a way to allow Brian to host via Zoom! Moonblind did a fantastic job making our show look professional and put together. Our show would not have been the same without their help. Local musician, Sky Smeed, performed a live performance of our theme song “Fur-Ever ” and the twohour show went fantastic! We “broadcasted” live on Facebook and YouTube. Although we encountered a few minor hiccups and bumps along the way, we managed to raised $85,000 for our shelter pets and have a ton of fun while doing so. The weekend following the Fur Ball, we had the obstacle course available for anyone to run and an adoption special running for the rest of October, which was sponsored by our friends at McCarthy Subaru. Events have looked so different this year but we are so thankful for the opportunity to make this event more accessible and involve more of our incredibly supportive community! We hope we can produce more of these fun and inclusive events going forward and can’t wait to have you participate!

UNDERSTANDING THE NEED The human-animal bond is a powerful dynamic that impacts individual, family, and community health. Recently, we discovered a cat left outside the shelter overnight in the rain in a box with a note asking to please help their 18-year-old cat, Aggie. The note stated that they could no longer care for their cat due to the loss of their job and home. We can only imagine the emotional trauma experienced by Aggie’s owner to make the decision to leave her outside the shelter in the middle of the night. Our Crisis Pet Retention (CPR) Program was borne of the idea that losing your job or your home does not have to mean you also lose your pet. Funds for our CPR Program allows the Lawrence Humane Society to proactively ensure that Douglas County residents do not suffer through giving up a family pet because of financial hardship. Financial circumstances alone are not reliable indicators of the capacity to love and care for a pet.

Over the years, our data shows that pet owners would choose to keep their pet if they were provided short-term help. The CPR fund provides much needed relief such as affordable veterinary care, pet supplies, behavioral resources, or referrals to supportive human services or pet-friendly housing options. Pet ownership and housing are deeply intertwined. Restrictive pet policies is the leading reason families were forced to surrender their pets to the Lawrence Humane Society since 2017. An overwhelming 93% of rental housing surveyed in Lawrence had restrictive pet policies like breed or weight limitations on pets. Beyond restrictive pet policies, the number of Douglas County pet owners requesting a surrender appointment for their family pet due to job loss or eviction is on the rise due to the economic fallout from COVID19. Over 26,000 households in Lawrence have at least one pet. The Lawrence Humane Society believes that helping pet owners and their pets will lead to a stronger, healthier community. With this vital fund, we believe we can help hundreds of families in Douglas County stay together with their pet.
