Born in Taiwan, Lawrence Tsai is an industrial Design graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, which is a competitive Product Design program in my country. For him, industrial design is not just a problem-solving or an aesthetic-oriented task, but an holistic discipline combining a story creating process with a deep understanding of people behaviors, and systematic thinking process behind a certain product. He strives for broadening his capability and vision of other design area, in terms of Interaction design, Speculative design, Transportation design and so on, to ďŹ nding new opportunity for Design. Opportunity

According to the user research and the reports from market analysts. The main reason why Under Armour was lose behind their competitors, Nike and Adidas from 2015 to 2017, was the transformation of buyers taste. The impression of musculine and professional sporty dominated buyers’ mind, however, when the trend of so-called “Athleisure” was all the rage, Under Armour was seemed to not catch up with this trend.

Kevin Plank, the CEO and founder of Under Armour, claimed that they would focus on technology of wearable device and fitness data collection, which he would like to change Under Armour into sports-tech brand, not just a sports brand, in 2017 when UA tried to deal with the declined market share against Nike and Adidas.

Physical response “ New technologies tend to rely on display screens, often with tiny lettering, with touch-sensitive areas that are exceedingly difficult to hit as eye-hand coordination declines. ” by Don Norman, the article in Fast-company.

Inspiration In order to find a suitable pattern to make this wearable device feel better when touching it. I looked for some references from different texture, such as a sole of shoe, some 3d surface on wearable devices, and other devices made of unique material. Besides, the user interface that compatiable with feasible function and detailed feeling is an important things as well.

Ideation The initial idea to this project was little complicated. From the beginning, I tried to build two things: (1) Worlds of different stories related to personal (2) a figure which has emotional projection

Therefore, I set up differnt kind of world, each has its own story to transmit some emotions or situations related to yourself right now. Also, in order to create a role representing to yourself, I came up with a figure as a mascot of this brand.

However, I changed my direction to this setting. I found that I should focus on the figure itself, which was not only the first impression of this brand, but a straightforward sign to create emotional projection.

Content Experiment In order to explore how the mascot looks like in different contents, I tried many contents below, choosing the shape from circular to linear, even powder. In this experiment, I could found which material is suitable to fit into mascot container, depending on the effect they stack up, including color and texture. I think what you collect could represent part of yourself, like personality and the journey you go through.

Prototyping The prototype was made of transparent UV Cureable Resin from SLA 3D printer. Divided into two pieces, it can be put into what you want to collect easily. The content I made as an example was pencil shavings, which represented the period that I spent a lot of time digging into the sketching of this project.

Project task/ briefing Design an interactive installation that imagine the way of people future in face-to-face talk occasion. “ Conciousness Concretizer ” is an interactive installation in the possiable future, or in the parallel universe, where human’s original and instinctive way of communication is transformed from face-to-face talking to semi- virtual communication, which is similar to online chatting through the Internet, but in reality. The installation stands as a role of simulating the occasion we talk to each other but have more freedom and manipulation to block someone we do not like to interact with or mute awkward topics we refuse to talk and so on. It is the way we are used to doing on the Internet, and make a little bit of fantasy mesh with our reality. On the basis of finding people an alternative interaction , this conceptual creation aims at discovering different behaviors between online and offline. It is meant to spark a debate on modern society where people heavily rely on online communication instead of face-to-face communication.

“ As an introvert, nomally, I do not talk to someone I am not quite familiar with at ease. Hard to find a topic to chat, hard to perform calmly when facing embarrassment. �

The sign of drinking water Once you pick up the glass of water, the ultrasonic sensor will detect it distance and activate the water mister immediately.

“ It is a shield created by you � You could see the mirror in front of you is misted up and blur whom you see embarrassingly. It visualizes how you feel at the same time.

Position The shape of top surface is hexagon, which has a metaphor of stable and protective, but only attached to three legs. In this case, I want to make it look like unstable and kind of imbalance when two people look at each other. In contrast, it seems more stable on the other side, like the sight of outsiders.

We dive into the virtual everyday through smartphones on our hands, getting used to interacting with each other by communication softwares. This behavior may sounds indifferent somehow, but it turns out to make us more comfortable and have more options to dealing with social difficulties, compare to meeting someone face to face.

This agricultural mode looks to provide producers with a decent income on a lasting basis, through volume allocations of high-quality goods produced with full disclosure. “

Process Collaboration across different sectors

In these project, we interns worked with the industrial design sector in Advantech, helping them generate and develop new ideas of IoT integrated service in office environment. We started research from our target users, value product’s position in the IoT related market with Marketing and product managers, also had several communications with mechanic engineers during prototyping phrase.

Conference Hall Project task/ briefing Improve the meeting procedure The project aims to bridge the connection between lecturers and audiences. AMIS-100 is used for multiple purposes, which enhance the communication of on stage and off stage with speaking queue system and be a personal assistant to make audiences involve in the meeting easily. We also designed the stands in two different sizes serving for these two group of users.

Demo Room Project task/ briefing Enhance the experience of seeing exhibition

The project aims to bring new experience of visiting exhibition through the IoT integrated service. Each exhibit is installed by AMIS-100 with 5” display, in order to interact with visitors directly. Visitors can ask questions and see customized product introduction, than all vistors’ preference and visiting route will be recorded by back end engineers and exhibition mangers for event optimizing.

Staff Restaurant Project task/ brieďŹ ng Provide alternative dining choices for employees

The project aims to create a dining service for in-house staffs. The idea was derived from smart store, which is the future type of purchasing and adjust some downsides of it. AMIS-100 is used from back-end information providing and front-end user engagement to transform the idea of smart store to smart shelf.

Concept /brieďŹ ng In the near future, autonomous car will dominate the road. Due to electric power and driverless configuration, autonomous car can offer bigger space for passengers. Meanwhile, it could also reduce the pleasure for driving and personal style.

Initial Idea In order to mix these two opposite traits, I create a car that feature with the space similar to autonomous car and combine the muscular surface, which make the car more sporty and energitic.

Workshop Intro “Hsiao ching she� is the workshop of Emotional Design and Speculative Design for two well-known design schools in Taiwan. Participants will be grouped to draw an idea or innovation inspired by public space in Taipei City.

Experience It was the first time for me to know the concept of speculative design. In this workshop, I realize that the design has it own power to make impact to society, not only the form of tangiable object, but other media, such as video and performance art

“BounDarry� is a footage for a series of man-made boundary in public space. Through field research, we discovered that we are surrounded by numerous boundary in public, such as waiting lines, traffic arrows , which make us obey or follow unconsciously.

We take Taipei MRT station, where is filled with plenty of boundary lines and limitation areas, as a sample to emphasize the idea of the rule we ignore and even take for granted normally. In this video, we were breaking some public-space rules in MRT station to trigger people to know the presence of boundary, and provide different results when we break the rule as a comedy and a reflection
