SOPHIA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS STAGE MUSICAL CONCERT
B
angalore: A record 982 girls of Sophia High School in the city centre Sunday staged a musical extravaganza on 'The Alternative Snow White' based on the play by David Barrett. "The girls demonstrated a sense of collective belonging with each of them involving in the musical production of the play with a telling performance. We are proud of them," Sophia principal M. Priscilla told the media. Choreographed by V. Ganesh and directed by the school's former teacher Ashley Willam Joseph, the programme brought alive the saga of Little Snow White that was first published in 1812 as part of Grimm's Fairy Tales and later popularised as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on
Broadway and by Hollywood in a film. Sporting colourful dress and using a variety of western instruments, the girls, Class 6 to Class 12 aged between 10-16 years captivated the audience with their narrative style. As a humorous adaptation of the classic tale, the musical show exposed the evil queen consumed by vanity and greed, the pure as snow stepdaughter whose beauty incurs her wrath, the valiant little men who save her from fangs of death and the ultimate triumph of the young princess. "The moral of victory of virtue over vice has been brought out with a great sense of humour," Priscilla said. With haunting melodies, fairy songs, action packed sequences, magical creatures, suspense and teary eyed moments, the girls regaled the audience, comprising their teachers, parents, friends and about 1,000 invitees. The programmes was organised to raise funds for expanding the school's infrastructure in its 10-acre campus. The six decades old convent school, which offers ICSE syllabus, has about 2,000 girl students on its rolls.

NOW YOU CAN FILE RTI APPLICATIONS ONLINE Taking a step towards greater transparency in governance, the government on Wednesday launched an exclusive portal to enable citizens to file RTI applications online for all central government ministries. The portal-www.rtionline.gov.in-- was launched today by Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions V Narayanasamy. "This is a very important initiative by the government. Without filling any paper or going to any office, citizens can file RTI applications online," he said after inaugurating the website. Narayanasamy said the RTI was a weapon in the hands of people and it was doing wonders across the country. "At present, about 82 central government ministries have been covered with this portal. Soon we will bring all Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) under it," the Minister said. The Ministry of Personnel, which acts as administrative department for implementation of the
transparency law, will also write to all state governments asking them to adopt this platform of online filing of RTI applications. "We will be writing a letter to all state governments asking them to follow this facility," he said, adding the government intends to strengthen people by many more such steps. The Centre's flagship Right to Information Act, which was enacted in 2005, mandates timely response-within 30 days -- to citizen requests for government information. One has to pay a fee of Rs 10 for seeking information. An information seeker can submit a fee of Rs 10 via Internet banking through SBI and its associated banks using the website. One can also use credit or debit cards. At present, the text of an application that can be uploaded at the prescribed column (on the website while filing application) is confined to 3,000 characters only. In case an application contains more than 3,000

characters, it can be uploaded as an attachment. An applicant also get an alert on his or her mobile about movement of the applications. Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), S K Sarkar, who was also present at the function, said the launch of RTI portal is a "culmination of efforts being put up by the government since 2005" towards strengthening people's right to know. "There has been increase in filing of RTI applications. There were about 24,000 RTI applications filed in 2005-06. In 2011-12, the number has touched 6.7 lakh," he said. Central Information Commissioner (CIC) Satyanand Mishra said it was an extremely relevant contemporary step. "The information can be sent online via database or scanning hard copies of documents. There will be no exchange of papers. Online filing of RTI applications will take away the use of papers," Mishra said.

Bengaluru is high priority investment destination for NRIs
B
angalore: The Rupee's sharp dip against the US dollar has made temptations for non-resident Indian (NRI) to buy property with realtors expecting an increase of 35% in business enquiries from the expatriates this year, reveals the associated chamber of commerce and industry of India (ASSOCHAM) recent findings.
Dera basi, Mohali and Panchukla. This time, there is a lower demand for the Delhi-NCR market, adds the ASSOCHAM survey. ASSOCHAM conducted a random survey of nearly 1250 real estate developers in Delhi-NCR, Dera Basi, Mohali near Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahemdabad, Pune, Dehradun, Chennai etc. The survey reveals that interest for buying property by NRIs have increased due to favourable exchange rates.
Releasing the ASSOCHAM paper on “Falling Rupee sparks property boom from NRIs” Mr. D S Rawat, Secretary General ASSOCHAM said, “With the rupee riding low against the dollar, Indian residents are looking to accelerate investment plans back home”. The rupee has fallen by about 34 per cent against the US dollar since August 2011 and crossed 65 against the dollar.
“The Indian property developers are anticipating a 35% surge in enquiries to NRI-based purchasers as the rupee dip against the dollar last six months. The decline in rupee has increased property sales because people want to get value for their money”, added majority of developers.
The survey highlighted that Bangalore is the most favourite property investment destination for NRIs followed by Chennai nd rd (2 ), Mumbai (3 ), th Ahemdabad(4 ), Dehradun th (5 ). A lot of Punjabis settled in Canada and UK are expected to invest more in Chandigarh sub-urban like
Mr. Rawat further said, “It's definitely not good news for people back at home, but for a non-resident Indian (NRI), this is definitely the best time to invest. At the moment any non-resident Indian buying a property in India can save around 20-30% on his/her property value. The enquiries may go up further
if rupee continues to slide, adds majority of the real estate developers. The majority of real estate developer said, the NRI traffic is coming primarily from the UAE/Gulf region, US, Singapore, Australia, UK, Canada, South-Africa etc. The demand is more for high end properties and commercial buildings. As per the recent estimates, nearly 5 million Indian expatriates live in the six Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and they remit close to $30 billion to India every year and have been growing over the years. Buying a property back home is the top-most priority of every nonresident Indian, at least for those living in the foreign countries as the weakening rupee has given an impetus to fulfill that objectiv e,
added 75% of the real estate developers. The Indian developers are optimistic and expecting to get a good number of booking this year. Their confidence is based on the fact that the rupee is plunging and has fallen 35% in last one year, adds the survey. The enquiries from NRIs especially from the Middle-East, Europe, the US and Singapore for buying property in India have also risen by 20-25% following the rupee's depreciation. The record decline in the value of the Indian rupee and the sluggish realty market, proved to be a double delight for overseas Indians investing in property here, adds the Secretary General.
Upakarma observed with great diligence Marathalli: Avani Avittam is an important ritual associated with the Brahmin community in the world. The day is of great significance to Rig, Yajur, Sama Vedic Brahmins. On the next day, Gayatri Japa Sankalmpam is observed. In other parts of South India, the observance is known as Upakarma. This day is also auspicious as the Brahmins offer libations of water to their ancestors to whom they owe their birth and to the great Rishis to whom they are highly indebted for spiritual knowledge and the Vedas themselves. In Bangalore Yajur Veda Upakarma was conducted in many temples - Sri Murugan temple at Ulsoor, Sree Ayyappa Temple at Bannargetta road, Sree Ganesha Temple at New Tippasandra, Sree Basavewshwara Gayathri temple at HSR Layout,
Sankara Eye Hospital Ganesha Temple, Kundalahalli, Sri Booneela Sametha Venkartamana Swami Temple, BEML Layout and many other temples. On the day of Avani Avittam, the sacred thread worn is changed and it is usually a community observance and takes place on the banks of a pond or river. Avani is the name of the Tamil month and Avittam is one of the 27 nakshatras or stars. On this day, a Mahasankalpam or a vow is taken for atonement of all our sins in the past year. The Brahmins take a holy dip and wear a new holy thread called Yajnopavit or Janeyu. The first step is a 'prayashchita' A prayer to atone the sins. It says, “For the removal of all my sins and thereby to secure a divine blessing and for qualifing myself to perform the
essential duties of Brahmanas as prescribed in the vedas and smritis and adopted by the really good in their conduct I put on this Yagnopavita”. When the thread is worn another mantra is recited which means -”I put on the sacred thread which is highly pure, is inseparable from God, is capable of prolonging life and is the foremost in the accomplishment of a Brahmana. May such pure Yagnopavita bring strength and dignity. While removing the old thread, the mantra means -”I throw away the broken dirty old thread, may the new one bring on long life and Brahmana's brilliance.

Sword hangs over Neriya village Belthangady: The residents of Neriya village who are fed up of the frequent arrival of officials to conduct survey to lay the gas pipelines have now decided to turn violent. The residents said that they are ready to lay down their lives but they will not hand over their land for the project. With this, they have decided to resort to arms against officials setting foot into the village. The episodes unfurled during a meeting convened at the village on Saturday. The villagers who did not entertain even the MLA said that they wanted a reliable promise from those concerned and till then they would not allow any meeting to be held in
the village. As many as 12 villages in Belthangady taluk will have to bear the scar of the pipeline being laid for HPCL for its Mangalore-Hasan-Mysore gas pipeline project. Accordingly a meeting was arranged at Neriya under the leadership of MLA Vasanth Bangera. However, the elected representatives and officials were out for a shock as they saw huge crowd standing outside the hall, boycotting the meet. The situation soon turned tumultuous. When the MLA tried bringing the officials and locals for a talk, the villagers backed out saying that they did not want talks but they only
wanted the government to withdraw the project. The MLA persistently suggested the villagers to see to it that the families to be affected by the project would come together and hold talks with the officials. The villagers said that there is no point holding talks with the officials because none of the villagers are ready to hand over their land for the project. However, paying respect to the words of the MLA the villagers agreed, after the officials were asked to give genuine information about the project. Accordingly it has been decided to hold a meeting on August 22 at Gurunarayana Sabha Bhavana in Belthangady.
Devotees receive Rayaru's blessings
B
angalore: As the scriptural authority says “apyachuto guru dvaaraa prasadakRut” it is very easy to please the Supreme Lord (Narayana) using guru as the channel. This is very obvious in the case of Gurusarvabhouma Sri Raghavendra teertha (Rayaru), the Kalpatharu (the divine tree that grants all wishes) of Kaliyuga. He grants the desires of supplicants without hesitation; devotees serving him with a pure heart are doubly blessed because he also removes their sins, blemishes and other shortcomings. People have experienced this in person and is something that great souls have vouched for. The benefits of obtaining Rayaru's grace have been profusely documented in religious works like Sri Raghavendra Vijaya, Sri Raghavendra stotra and hundreds of compositions by great saints. This year Shri Raghavendra Swamy Aaradhane was from August 21st-23rd 2013 and was celebrated all across India, and many other countries in Rayara Matta's and also many households. My parents do Rayara Seva every year during Aaradhane, and every strong devotee of Rayaru do it no matter where they are in the world and get the blessings. The very venerable Srimat Sushameendra teertha, the present pontiff of the Matha, has reassured devotees on innumerable occasions that coming to Mantralaya is not mandatory to obtain Rayaru's grace, it is enough if one performs devout service in one's home by going around Rayaru's picture while reciting Raghavendra Stotra. Even reciting “Sri Raghavendraya namah” with intense devotion is good enough to obtain his total grace.

The horror is that it looks like a kindly grandfather. Anwar Congo is a fit, trim, sharply-dressed man who would go unnoticed, until he starts to speak about his past. Congo was one of street punks who became a death squad leader after the military overthrow of the Indonesian government in 1965. August 25-31, 2013 6 Ten important facts about Mahabharata
Vol. 4, Issue 52
The Mahabharata epic has been fascinating Indians and nonIndians alike for the last several centuries. It's an epic on revenge, fratricidal war and superhuman feats. Here are 10 exciting facts from Mahabharata: 1. Krishna rode a chariot that was heavily potent and once when Arjun was done with the war, Krishna asked him to get off the chariot first and then he got off. As soon as he got off, the chariot exploded in a huge fireball. That's when he explained to Arjun why he asked him to get off the chariot first. 2. Pandu (Father of Pandavas) wished his sons must eat his
flesh post death so that all the knowledge may transfer to them which he had collected after so many years. Only Sahadeva ate a piece; the moment he ate he was able to see future but stopped by God. He was a blessed astrologer. 3. Sahadeva (the youngest Pandav) knew everything about the future. He knew that a war was going to occur, but he kept silent because he was under a curse that if he revealed anything to anybody he would die. 4. Arjun's 'pilgrimage' for breaking his marital laws with Draupadi earned him three more wives. They were Chitrangada (Manipura), Ulupi (Naga) and Subhadra. 5. Arjuna was unable to defend the w i v e s o f Krishna from c o m m o n robbers after Krishna's departure to Vaikuntha. His bow became heavy and he forgot all his mantras. The 8 main wives committed suicide. The
others were kidnapped by robbers. 6. Yudhistira learnt to play dice form the Sage Vrihadaswa who narrated the story of Nala and Damayanti in their exile. 7. Bhima had one surviving son named Sarvaga by Balandhara, who was not given the throne despite being much elder to Parikshit. He became the ruler of Kashi (his mother's land) instead. 8. Ekalavya was actually Krishna's cousin. He was the son of Devashrava (brother of Vasudeva) who got lost in the forest and was found by a Nishada Hiranyadhanu. Ekalavya died protecting his father during Rukmini Swayamvar. He was killed by Krishna. For his great sacrifice of Gurudakshina Krishna blessed Ekalavya that he would be soon reincarnated and take revenge on Drona. This person was Dhristadyumna (who kiled Drona). 9. Krishna himself said to Arjun in Bhagwat Geeta O invincible one, you are Nara and I am Hari Narayana, and we, the sages Nara-Narayana, have come to this world at proper time. (Nara Narayan are considered as the part avatars of Vishnu). 10. Mahabharata is also known as Pancham Veda, the fifth Veda.

span of one year. In an early scene in the film, Congo revisits a rooftop that was one of his preferred killing floors. Initially, he and his men would bludgeon their captives to death. But that method proved too bloody. So Congo came up with a way of garrotting his victims with fishing wire, which he happily demonstrates for the camera. Then he performs a little dance, just for fun, in the exact spot where he presided over countless murders. In one astonishing sequence, a gangster works his way through a marketplace of Chinese vendors, extorting money from each of them in front of the camera, as if he were doing nothing wrong. The Act of Killing demonstrates how a society built on fear, violence and perpetual threat quickly learns to play by the rules. The three million members of the Pancalisa Youth paramilitary group, who dress in camouflage fatigues the color of flames, are the bullies who keep everyone in check, their eyes cast downward and their mouths shut. The only moment in the film where we see an honest reaction by a citizen to the reality they must endure is a brief shot of the control room of a TV station, where the crew briefly expresses their disbelief and disgust in the establishment. The Act of Killing is a bold reinvention of the documentary form, as well as an astounding illustration of man's infinite capacity for evil. But by focusing on Congo, the movie also serves as a reminder of our inherent sense of empathy. You can't possibly forgive the man for what he's done, but you can't just dismiss him as a monster, either.

images of targetted regions. The data will provide astronomers insights into the dramatic evolution of the primordial cosmic gas that led to the formation of the first stars and galaxies in the early universe. As a joint initiative of Australia, India, New Zealand and the US, the MWA consists of 2,048 wideband antennas optimised to operate in 803 3 0 M H z f r e q u e n c y. T h e antennas are arranged as 128 square tiles, each of which has 16 pairs of receivers spread across 3 km at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, about 200 km from the Western Australian coast and 700 km north of Perth. The MWA will image the intergalactic hydrogen gas surrounding early galaxies during the cosmological epoch of re-ionisation, and study the structure of the gas in the Milky Way galaxy and its magnetic field. The first observing cycle is underway and indications are the telescope and data are meeting the expectations set during commissioning.
Indian astronomers throw light on ancient cosmos
B
angalore: Stars born billions of years ago emit signals, and a specialised radio telescope can capture such signals. Indian astronomers have been part of an international team building such radio telescopes to increase our knowledge of the early universe. Four astronomers of the Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bangalore participated in building a new radio telescope in Australia to track and receive signals from distant stars and galaxies, which emerged at cosmic dawn, 13 billion years ago. "We participated in building the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope in Western Australia outback to unfold the cosmic history that remained a mystery so far," RRI director Ravi Subrahmanyan told media. Unlike an optical telescope through which planets, stars and galaxies are "viewed" and studied from the earth, a radio telescope uses antennas, which operate in the radio frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum to detect "signals" emitted by celestial bodies and objects in the outer space for studying their phenomena. "The primary goal of the radio telescope is to 'view' the birth of the first stars and
galaxies - the cosmic dawn almost 13 billion years ago. The telescope entered the operational phase July 9 to get a deep insight into cosmic phenomena," Subrahmanyan said. Besides Subrahmanyan and three other astro-physicists - Uday Shankar, K.S. Dwaraknath and A.A. Deshpande - four top engineers from the institute also partnered with counterparts from Australia, New Zealand and the US in building the mammoth radio telescope to enable astronomers to glean insights into the Milky Way and galaxies beyond, pulsing and exploding stellar objects. "We have designed and built the digital receivers of the telescope at the institute, installed and commissioned them to also study the influence of the sun on interplanetary space weather close to the earth," Subrahmanyan said. The digital receivers pick signals from the antennas and perform complex algorithms to process the data for transmitting it to a central processing unit, which computes the imaging information. The MWA will survey the entire southern sky and make sensitive
"The telescope has begun gathering the weak radio signals from deep space that will be analysed over the coming years by scientists at RRI and in the US

and Australia using parallel computing systems," institute spokesman Ram Subramaniyan said. The MWA is a precursor to the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a global project to be built as the world's largest radio telescope across Australia and South Africa. "This nextgeneration radio telescope (SKA) will herald path-breaking advances in the deployment of distributed and parallel antenna technology, integrated receivers, e n e r g y s y s t e m s , communications and computing," Subramaniyan pointed out. According to Australian Nobel Laureate Brian Schmidt, who participated in the project, the MWA is a momentous step towards setting up the SKA lowfrequency telescope nearby over the next five years. Schmidt was a joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2011 for proving that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Founded by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman in 1948, the RRI is an autonomous body engaged in research areas of astronomy, astrophysics, light and matter physics, soft condensed matter and theoretical physics. Since 1972, the institute is funded by the department of science and technology.
