INTRODUCTION TO PAGET’S DISEASE  Paget's

disease can affect any bone in the skeleton.

 It

appears most of ten in the spine, pelvis, long bones of the limbs, and skull

 It

can be present in just one bone or in several bones  It can affect the entire bone or just part of it.  Three phases of Paget disease have been described: lytic, mixed lytics + blastic, and sclerotic.


CAUSES OF PAGET’S DISEASE The exact cause of Paget’s disease is still unknown. Some of the believed causes of Paget’s disease are: Genetic mutations  Measles

virus attacks  Osteoclast cells malfunction  Environmental factors  Resorption of bone cells


SYMPTOMS OF PAGET’S DISEASE 

Bone pain

Articular or neutogenic pain  Preparation for orthopedic surgery 

Hypercalcemia associated with immobilization  Prevention of further hearing loss in patients with 

cranial involvement  Prevention of further deromity in patients with cranial, jaw, spinal or extremity disease  Reversal of osteolytic lesions  Prevention of skeletal deformities  Prevention of arthritis


DIAGNOSIS OF PAGET’S DISEASE  CT

(Computerized Tomography)

is

a

technique in which several X-rays are taken from a different angle and combined later to make detailed images of the affected bones.  MRI (Magnetic Resource Imaging) - It is an imaging test in which high frequency magnetic and radio waves are used to get detailed images of the affected bones.  Bone scan - It involves the use of a small amount of radioactive solution, known as a tracer. This tracer is injected into the patient’s vein. A special camera is used to take pictures of areas that


TREATMENT FOR PAGET’S DISEASE There is no permanent cure for Paget’s disease its treatment can only help in the reduction of symptoms. Possible treatment of Paget’s disease is:  Medicines such as, acetaminophen and bisphosphonates provide relief from the pain, prevent bone loss, and control level of calcium in the body.  Physical therapy, routinely exercise and certain vitamin D supplements prevent the Paget’s disease from developing further.  In particular cases an osteotomy procedure is performed. Osteotomy is a surgical procedure in which a segment of bone is removed to correct a misalignment.
