AN INTRODUCTION TO LAZYBONES STREET

WE’VE LONG THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT WE COULD DO TO SHOW OUR WONDERFUL CUSTOMERS A LITTLE TASTE OF WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE THE LAZYBONES WORLD... As the company is growing, the product range expanding and our locations spreading all over the world, we thought a little newspaper would be the perfect way for you to keep in touch with everything that is going on.

SO WHAT’S NEW?

We’re so excited to announce the opening of our first store in America! Located on Main Street, Santa Monica LA, the store will showcase all things lazybones as well as a collection of local and vintage finds. The space also features a vacant lot next door which will be converted into an edible urban garden thanks to the help of our friends at Farmscape (see article on next page). The garden features our own range of outdoor furniture using recycled and repurposed materials and will be a lovely haven to sit in and relax. The store is scheduled to open December 5th, 2014.

“we’re so excited to announce the opening of our first store in America!”

Introducing lazybones street, available 3 times a year. We will feature what’s new in our world, recipes of food we love to eat, interviews with people we think are interesting (and hope you do too), how-to guides and “LAZYBONES EVERYDAY” featuring women from all around and how they style their lazybones! And best of all, it’s free! So go on, take a look, have a read, pass it on to a friend and enjoy! x lazybones

Our range of ceramics was released a few months ago with a great response so far! We plan on growing the range to include more favourite servingware and dinnerware items in fun vintage patterns.

INTERVIEW WITH: SEAN FROM FARMSCAPE

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF

As the Sales Director for our LA Office, I am responsible for all initial client communication from inquiry through project installation. My education is in Environmental Science and my work experience is primarily in business management. I have been an avid home gardener for about 20 years and am currently pursuing a Certificate in Landscape Architecture.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE FOR YOU?

A typical day can involve many things from corresponding with potential and existing clients, doing site visits, overseeing installations, and working on special projects with my colleagues at Farmscape.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECT SO FAR?

A couple of months ago we did an installation of a 48-vine front yard Cabernet Sauvignon v ineyard near our office in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles. The best part has been returning to the site and seeing the progress of the grapes over the summer season. In about 4 years this little vineyard will be producing some very fine wine.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM PROJECT?

Honestly a project like the upcoming lazybones installation in Santa Monica, as it is a nice combination of good old-fashioned vegetable growing combined with elements of landscape design all set within a unique urban setting. It is so rewarding to be involved in projects that are pushing the envelope on what a unique urban space can be with a company like lazybones that

is passionate about sustainability and demonstrating to the public and its customers how we can bring the farm back to the city.

FAVOURITE PLANT?

This is a tough question as I seem to have a favorite plant with each season. I am currently propagating some Kalanchoe baharensis plants at home and absolutely love them. As for vegetables, we grew a variety of tomato called “Carbon” this summer in our office garden. It was one of the best tomatoes I have ever tried and had an interesting reddish black color.

ANY TIPS FOR HOW PEOPLE CAN START THEIR OWN EDIBLE GARDEN IN A SMALL SPACE?

Yes, first thing to do is make certain that you have adequate sunlight exposure. A viable edible garden should get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight to be productive. Once that is established, a good rich soil (raised beds work great), and a consistent watering schedule are keys to good yields.

CAN YOU GIVE US A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT FROM THE FARMSCAPE/LAZYBONES SPACE? I envision

an inviting space where people can enjoy a tranquil garden setting while at the same time be inspired to grow something a t home. The design of the space is not set in stone yet but it will feature an interesting mix of native and drought tolerant plantings, raised bed vegetable production, herbs, flowers, and a variety of seating areas to take it all in. farmscapegardens.com

FOR THE PANCAKES: 1 cup quinoa flakes 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup almond (or other non-dairy milk) 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 slightly overripe banana 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed 2 tbsp macadamia or coconut oil TOPPING: 1 cup raspberries Vanilla Bean yoghurt for dolloping Maple Syrup Your favourite chopped nuts & coconut flakes METHOD: Mix the ground flaxseed, quinoa flakes, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. In another bowl, mash the banana, add the vanilla extract, almond milk and beaten egg and mix together. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan on medium heat, add in small scoops of the pancake mix, leaving enough room to allow each pancake to be flipped, and making sure they are small enough to flip easily with a spatula. Cook for about 3 minutes on each side (don’t be tempted to flip too early!) or until each side is nice and golden. Divide pancakes onto each plate, top with a dollop of Vanilla Bean yoghurt, a good handful of raspberries, drizzle with maple syrup and sprinkle some chopped nuts and coconut flakes on top..

PEC AN, RIC OTTA, HONEY & C INNAMON TOAST

SERVES 2 This is the best breakfast when you feel like something not super savoury but not sickly sweet, the creamy ricotta topped with crunch of the toasted pecans is delicious. INGREDIENTS: 4 slices of your favourite sourdough bread 1/3 cup fresh ricotta 1/4 cup pecans, chopped in half 4 tbsp honey 1 tsp cinnamon powder METHOD: Place your slices of bread under a grill and toast until slightly golden. Spread ricotta evenly over slices of bread, be generous! Sprinkle some cinnamon over each slice of bread and top with pecan slices. Drizzle over honey evenly and place the slices under the grill for another 2-3 minutes until pecans are nicely toasted, keeping a close eye so they don’t burn. Enjoy straight away!

WITH A QUICK SNAP OF YOURSELF AND YOUR DETAILS!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND? I am an Illustrator and Graphic Designer from Sydney. I am vintage obsessed and you can quite often find me exploring vintage and antique markets for everything cute and kitsch! I collect lots of things, from vintage Bakelite jewellery and celluloid brooches to woodland animal figurines and cameras. When I am not vintage hunting (with gelato rest stops in between) you can usually find me working on a new drawing. I love to draw animals and I am heavily influenced by the Victorian era in illustration.

from left to right: Kirbee wears Laura dress in Tin Can Bay, Lara dress in Aloha and Alice dress in Paradise

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? I would say that my personal style is mostly influenced by the 1940’s and 50’s. I love those eras for their amazing hair styles and the dresses! For me an outfit isn’t complete without a brooch - it is a rare day that I don’t pop on a brooch from my collection. I think it is so much fun to play mix and match with the dresses and cardigans in my wardrobe. There are just so many combinations to be had!

TIPS FOR LAYERING VINTAGE CLOTHING? I think it is great to mix modern and vintage pieces, especially when there are so many amazing pieces of clothing being made that are vintage inspired. I love pairing a vintage dress with a new cardigan and flipped around with a modern dress and vintage cardi! I think the key is to pick out colours from your main piece of clothing and just match it back with something else. From a belt to a brooch to a cute nylon head scarf (my personal favourite) it is fun to put together an outfit that is a mix of new and old.

“ it is just so much more fun to wear fun clothes everyday!”

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? I draw inspiration for my outfits from lots of different places, my friends, people I see around me and probably most of all from seeing people’s amazing outfits on instagram! I follow so many amazing girls from all around the world, it is always so fun to see how people put things together and look like they have stepped out from another time. When I began dressing in a more vintage style I used to worry that people would think that I was heading to a fancy dress party, but then I started thinking ‘well every day should be a fancy dress party if you get to wear clothes like this!’. I don’t think you should save wearing pretty dresses for a special occasion (although don’t get me wrong, I love a special occasion dress!), it is just so much more fun to wear fun clothes everyday!

YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO IN SYDNEY? My perfect day out in Sydney would be starting the day off either at a weekend vintage market to look for new treasures with by best friend, or popping into some opshops then stopping off at Daisy’s Milkbar for a Vanilla Malt milkshake to re-fuel. I think the vintage markets in Sydney are amazing, there always seems to be something on! It is also so nice to just jump in the car and explore, I love taking day trips out to places with my camera to take pictures along the way.

IF YOU COUD LEARN TO DO ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I can actually say that something I have wanted to do for a long time is learn how to Swing Dance and I can finally tick it off my list! I started taking lessons a couple of months ago and I am having IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND LIVE IN ANY ERA, WHICH so much fun! I figured since I love the fashion of the era so much WOULD IT BE? that I should learn to dance too. It’s a perfect excuse to twirl I would have to choose the 1950’s. I would spend my days sipping around in pretty dresses. The Swing Dance community in Sydney on milkshakes (vanilla malt of course) at the perfectly pastel local is really great, with so many lessons and events being held around milkbar with my sketch book drawing bunnies and my dream the place. I don’t know what I would add to my list of things to sky blue mustang would be parked out the front. In saying that learn now, but I am sure to think of something else I would like to though I do very much appreciate our modern day mod-cons learn soon. and I don’t know if I had to go back in time if I would be so willing kirbeelawler.com | etsy store: kirbeeart.etsy.com | instagram @kirbeelawler to give up my mobile phone. I guess an endless supply of Fifties Dresses might be a good pay off?
