There has been a lot in the news in regard to how we are becoming an overly obese society, and yet in stark contrast we are also told that never before has society been so self conscious and preoccupied with how we look. Much has been said about how the media is portraying models who are either too thin or using images that have been touched up to cover up even the smallest of imperfections and falsely slimming the model down, which is giving people the wrong perception of how they should look and in the process setting an almost impossible goal. We are fed a constant stream of mixed messages but one thing people are definitely doing to try and achieve this goal is spending more and more on cosmetic treatments. Once considered celebrity exclusive, most of us now know at least a few friends who have opted for some sort of cosmetic enhancement. Starting in this issue we are running a series of cosmetic surgery features devoted to its fastest growing fan base‌men. Next issue, end of June.

The 2014 Challenge takes place as part of the annual Riverside Festival on Sunday 3rd August on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. The Challenge's official charity, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, is the only children's hospice in the East Midlands and Katie Baxter, Events Manager, says, "The Dragon

Thankfully, you don't need the physical strength of a Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of a Jessica Ennis-Hill to be successful as teamwork, timing (and of course a little bit of luck!) will win the day. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew of up to 11 people is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from being part of one of the region's largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. CELEBRITY PROFILE

And The Best Actor Oscar Goes To…

Matthew McConaughey “I don’t want to just revolve. I want to evolve – as a man, as a human, as a father, as a lover.” – Matthew McConaughey Actor Matthew David McConaughey was born on November 4, 1969, in Uvalde, Texas, and is known for his laid-back lifestyle, rugged physique and charming appeal. He was an athlete at a young age, playing golf and tennis at Longview High School. His classmates named him the school’s “Most Handsome Student.” McConaughey stayed in Texas for college, graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993. While he had previously appeared in commercials and in small film roles, McConaughey got his first big break in 1993’s Dazed and Confused. Known for his good looks and easy-going personality, McConaughey soon achieved leading-man status with A Time to Kill (1996), which also starred Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. The press often speculated about the nature of McConaughey’s relationship with Bullock, but sources close to the pair insisted that they were only friends.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

McConaughey began developing some notoriety for his offbeat off-screen behaviour.

16

Making the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1996, Matthew McConaughey was seen as a rising star in Hollywood. He had several dramatic projects that helped further establish his talents as an actor. In 1997, he appeared in Contact with Jodie Foster, a science-fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis. That same year, he starred in Amistad, playing a lawyer involved in the trial of African slaves who staged a revolt onboard the slave ship Amistad. The

Academy Award-winning film was directed by Steven Spielberg. Returning to his comedic roots, McConaughey starred in 1999’s EdTv as a lowly clerk who becomes the star of his own reality show. The film was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Later that year, McConaughey began developing some notoriety for his offbeat off-screen behaviour. The police visited his Austin, Texas, home after receiving a noise complaint in 1998. There, they discovered a naked McConaughey playing the bongos and found a small amount of marijuana. McConaughey was booked on drug charges and for resisting arrest. The drug charges were later dropped, but the actor paid a fine for violating a local noise ordinance. Bouncing back, McConaughey emerged as a king of romantic comedies. He starred in The Wedding Planner (2001) with Jennifer Lopez, and then in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) with Kate Hudson. He then tried his hand at action with 2005’s Sahara, and became romantically involved with co-star Penelope Cruz. Then, working with Al Pacino, McConaughey played a con man in the dramatic thriller Two for the Money (2005). While neither Sahara or Two for the Money scored at the box office, McConaughey remained popular. He cemented his status as a heartthrob later that year when he was named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2005. In 2006, McConaughey returned to familiar territory with the romantic comedy Failure to Launch, co-starring with Sarah Jessica

Parker. He also reteamed with Kate Hudson for 2008’s Fool’s Gold. Shortly before the film was released, McConaughey announced on his website that he was going to become a father. He and girlfriend Camila Alves welcomed a baby boy, Levi Alves McConaughey, on July 7, 2008. More recently, McConaughey appeared in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder – taking over the part for Owen Wilson – alongside Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. He went on to star in 2009’s The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas. After taking a break in 2010, McConaughey starred in The Lincoln Lawyer (as Mick Haller) and Killer Joe (as Killer Joe Cooper) – both released in 2011 – followed by the Jeff Nichols-directed drama Mud (2012), in which he co-starred with Reese Witherspoon and Michael Shannon; the film garnered both critical and commercial acclaim. Also in 2012, McConaughey gained some commercial acclaim for his performance in the comedic film Magic Mike; he played Dallas, a male stripper who mentors a younger performer known as Magic Mike (Channing Tatum), in the film, directed by Steven Soderbergh. He shares star billing with Woody Harrelson in HBO’s 2014 series True Detective. In early 2013, McConaughey was confirmed as the lead in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming time travel science fiction film Interstellar, which is set for release in November 2014.

Oscar-Winning Role in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ McConaughey went on to earn a buzzworthy role as Ron Woodruff, the real-life activist who, after being diagnosed with AIDS and given only six months to live in the mid1980s, began advocating for and taking a regime of drugs that mitigated the disease’s effects, in the biopic Dallas Buyers Club (2013). The film came to fruition after years in limbo, with McConaughey losing 30 pounds for the role. For his performance as Woodruff, the actor took home best actor honours at both the 2014 Academy Awards and Golden Globes. McConaughey met Brazilian model and television performer Camila Alves in 2006. The couple became engaged on December 25, 2011 and were married on June 9, 2012 in Austin, Texas, where they reside. Together they have three children: son Levi Alves McConaughey (born July 7, 2008), daughter Vida Alves McConaughey (born January 3, 2010), and son Livingston Alves McConaughey (born December 28, 2012). McConaughey started the just keep livin foundation, which is “dedicated to helping teenage kids lead active lives and make healthy choices to become great men and women”. He also rescued various pets stranded after the flooding of New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. In 2006, he rescued a cat from two youths in Sherman Oaks, California; the youths had doused the cat in hairspray and were attempting to set it on fire.

“McConaughey seems to be tapping into something essential, remaining himself while stretching, getting older while staying the same age.”

With his first Oscar nomination and the critical acclaim received for True Detective, “McConaughey seems to be tapping into something essential, remaining himself while stretching, getting older while staying the same age.” Some critics have dubbed this comeback in his career and his move towards more complex roles “The McConaissance.”

Johnny Cash Out Among the Stars

Kylie Minogue Kiss Me Once

Foster the People Supermodel

Discovered in 2012, Out Among The Stars is truly a lost, previously unreleased Johnny Cash album. These aren’t alternate takes or different versions of songs that you’ve heard. These are brand new songs to the Cash canon.

The beloved Aussie pop Princess is back with her twelfth studio album with the limitless energy of 2010’s Aphrodite and the harder-edged electro of 2007’s X”; and with some exciting new changes, with her hiring Jay Z’s Roc Nation management team, and working with new writers and producers, including Sia, Stargate and Producer of the Year Pharrell, who has been dominating the charts, producing almost every pop song getting stuck in our heads lately. The highly anticipated album reminds us why Kylie has stayed so strong for so long.

The follow up to their 2011 debut album Torches, Supermodel has been created with “more grit” according to frontman Mark Foster, taking inspiration from British Rock Bands such as The Clash and The Kinks. The album also strays from their electronic roots, delving into a more instrumentally based sound. Perhaps a sign of the band musically maturing, and if this is the case then this is undoubtedly an album to look out for.

Completed in 2013 by Johnny’s only son John Carter Cash, Out Among The Stars is a pivotal Johnny Cash album lost in time, and now ready to become a classic.

Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs and Sugar - Your Brain’s Silent Killers - David Perlmutter, MD

Bird Box - Josh Malerman Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world – a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman. Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn’t look outside anymore. Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

4. Samsung S9 UHD TV

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

At a whopping 85-inches this latest ultra hi-definition beast claims to be an inch bigger than the nearest competitor 4K set. Design-wise the Samsung S9 is everything you’d expect from a top-end TV. The screen itself is seductively, virtually bezel-free and sits within a unique frame that Samsung has called a Timeless Gallery frame, arguing that this makes the TV “appear to be floating within its frame”

22

Under the hood the Samsung S9 packs a quad-core processor to enable faster multitasking between content and apps. The speakers are, amazingly, built into the gallery frame, and still provide perfect sound quality. And for those of us who love to feel like we’re in the future, there are voice and gesture controls. This truly is an awe inspiring television, as would be expected with the price tag.

But the LG Pocket Photo Smart offers something wonderfully reminiscent of the old Polaroid cameras, the ability to instantly print photographs from your mobile,;no matter where you are. With a 45 second print time and fast Bluetooth connection, you can take your photo one minute and have it printed out and in your hand the next. It’s wonderfully simple but also a great gadget.

8. Speedo Aquabeat 2.0 7. Lumitab Everyone, and I do mean everyone, has at some point dreamt of their own personal cinema, but sadly, it is simply not in most people’s budget. Well it now seems that it may well be, the award winning Lumitab is a versatile 7 inch tablet with a built in projector, the world’s first. Like on any tablet, you can play games, read e-books and create presentations. But the beauty of the Lumitab is what sets it apart from other tablets, at the end of a long day, you can sit back, and simply point that Lumitab at a plain wall and watch a movie in your own personal cinema.

Along with mermaids and talking sea creatures, one of the most unrealistic aspects of The Little Mermaid was the quality of sound underwater, I mean come on, nothing sounds that clear underwater. That was until the dawn of the underwater mp3 player. The Speedo Aquabeat 2.0 holds 4GB of music, plays FM Radio and even features a pedometer and stopwatch.

Located on Stoney Street in the trendy Lace Market district in the building that was the former home of Scruffy’s, Aurora is a contemporary venue that’s perfect for a dinner date for two all the way up to parties for 60. Aurora is the brain child of Craig Thomas, a chef by trade who takes the roles of owner and Head Chef at the restaurant. Craig’s CV is a veritable who’s who of the world’s top chef’s as he has worked alongside the ‘Godfather’ Marco Pierre White, opened a Jean-Cristophe Novelli restaurant and even rejected a job offer from Gordon Ramsay, twice! It’s clear to see that Craig is incredibly talented and Nottingham is immensely lucky that he has chosen it to launch his first restaurant.

Food lovers will adore Aurora. It is a charming venue run by an extremely talented Chef who prides himself on preparing and cooking every meal to perfection. The layout makes it ideal for everything from first dates to wedding receptions and celebrations to business meetings, so if you’re looking for wowfactor without the hefty price tag, Aurora is the place to be, and be seen.

Haveli - Restaurant Review Indian Restaurant in Chilwell With the great abundance of restaurants around us and countless cuisines to sample, finding the right place for the perfect meal can be quite a difficult endeavour. Well you needn't worry, this one's on us.

very happy to say I was not wrong; the dish was delicious, each bite offered different flavours than the last and the aroma was wonderfully intoxicating.

Haveli, in Chilwell, is an Indian restaurant that really stands proudly above many. Boasting not only an expertly made menu, but beautiful presentation, a warm and inviting atmosphere and an attentive, welcoming staff which really cannot be spoken of highly enough.

After finishing our starters, a complimentary palette cleanser was served in the form of a delightful mango sorbet; really the perfect thing to prepare for the main course.

From the moment we pulled up to this contemporary restaurant, we knew it was going to be an Indian culinary experience with a difference. We were greeted at the door and regarded as though we were old friends, not a surly face in sight; which I think we can all agree can be seen too often in some establishments. Once seated we were treated to complimentary poppadoms and chutneys, which alone were wonderful, whilst we browsed the menu. The scent of food on neighbouring tables piqued our interest and it is easy to see that every course leaving the kitchen is carefully made with skill and a genuine creative flair. The menu offers traditional favourites, a wide range of vegetarian options and also many unique dishes which I had honestly never seen before in any restaurant. And if requested, dishes can be adjusted to taste and spice requirements; which is perfect for those who adore flavour but not so much heat!

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

It wasn't long until I could stop coveting meals around us as our starters were brought to the table, I knew that if the taste matched the precise and impressive presentation, then this would be a meal to remember. I am

26

I think one of my favourite things about this restaurant's cooking style would be the attention to flavour. Unlike many Indian restaurants, the meals emphasise flavour with a range of imaginative ingredients, rather than simply oils and butters, which meant we were saved the common heavy feeling often endured after an indulgent Indian meal. The restaurant really does give you the feeling of authentic Indian home cooking, each chef carries years of experience and it truly shows in the quality of the food. Haveli is esteemed for its great service, making guests feel remarkably special and of course the fantastic food; I'm pleased to tell you that the restaurant certainly lives up to its expectations. Not only the meal but the whole experience was one that will keep us coming back for more. So the next time you're given the task to choose the restaurant, relax, Haveli is just a phone call away. 10 Attenborough Lane, Chilwell, Nottingham, NG9 5JW. ARE YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR? If you answer 'yes' to most of the following then you are well within your rights to class yourself as a budding entrepreneur…  You have always been driven, self motivated and hardworking.  You've worked for employers in jobs that you have excelled at and climbed the ladder fast.  You've worked in jobs and thought 'I could run a company like this so much better than my employer'.  You are always looking at ways to 'monetise' EVERYTHING!  You notice the small things on a day to day basis – spelling mistakes on restaurant menus, weak hand- shakes and non satisfactory customer service …and want to scream…You then spend the next half an hour ranting to whoever will listen about how unacceptable it is and how you would do it differently.  You don't mind working long, unsociable hours and carrying on working when your mates are off to the pub- after all it's for yourself.  You love watching TV shows like Dragons Den and the Apprentice.  You love hearing about new business ideas and meeting new people.  Enjoying what you do for a living is extremely important to you.  You measure success in profit not turnover.  Your aim is to work your business around your lifestyle rather than the other way around.  You see problem solving as a challenge rather than an obstacle.  You are not afraid of failure, if all else fails, try, try and try again.  You have at least one hero in the business world that inspires you e.g Lord Alan Sugar, Sir Richard Branson, Karen Brady etc.  You use real life experiences to spur you on rather than hinder your progression.  You thrive on criticism and use it as a way of driving you further forward - 'There is no better revenge than success'.  Procrastination is one of your biggest irritations.  You can't wait to get up in the morning to start work.  You find yourself talking business on weekends, holidays, at weddings.  Sleeping is a barrier toward your goal and you cannot wait to get up to see what the day will bring.  You haven't had a holiday in over two years – because you don't want one…you are too busy.

LONDON HOTSPOTS City Life’s reviews some of the capital’s most notable establishments....

London is widely believed to be the culture capital of the world, although this title is disputed with a number of other cities internationally. The city is particularly renowned for its theatre quarter, and its West End theatre district has given the name to "West End theatre", the strand of mainstream professional theatre staged in the large theatres in London. London is also known to have some of the world’s best restaurants, best hotels and best entertainment venues. City Life have been there to discover and review some of the most notable establishments.

CAROM AT MEZA 100 Wardour Street, London W1F 0TN www.meza-soho.co.uk Carom at Meza, named after the Indian spice and popular table-top game, is a restaurant and bar with a difference in the heart of Soho. Specialising in authentic pan-indian dishes., perfect for sharing in groups or enjoying as a three-course meal. The restaurant has an extensive choice of dishes in a variety of sizes, so whether you are looking for a few sharing plates or an indulgent feast, you can easily tailor your meal to suit your plans and your appetite. The stunning Atrium bar provides the perfect setting to watch Soho passing by, whilst offering eight-pint chilled beer towers, and an exciting and innovative cocktail list The premium cocktails range from indian-inspired to contemporary classics all create by Carom’s experienced mixology team

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Our Experience: Set within the same building as the popular Floridita, in the heart of Soho, Carom attract the same fun loving crowd of media execs and happy-go-lucky tourists. The atmosphere is casual, although service is welcoming and prompt. It’s still in general terms, an Indian restaurant, but with that little bit extra that turns a restaurant from being just another restaurant to something a little bit special. The menu is varied, offering most of the expected courses, but with some more enterprising dishes added in.

42

We opted to try some of those more enterprising dishes, which is unlike me, tending to stick to what I know, but I shouldn’t have been concerned as each dish was served as described and tasted great. In fact food overall was fantastic. Well priced as well! One of the venue’s features is the lively Atrium bar and the extensive cocktail list. Their expert mixologist is on hand to tempt you through the variety of well known and their signature cocktails, and it's a perfect setting to take a break from the hubbub of central Soho.

Who might you see there... Located in central Soho, Carom is in party central. Floridita hosts numerous celebrity laden parties and you can expect to see a diverse range of clientele from Cliff Richard to Joey Essex, either walking through the doors or passing through Soho.

CHAKANA (FORMERLY ROSE CLUB) 23 Orchard Street, London, W1H 6HL www.chakanaclub.com

Chakana in Marylebone is one of the hottest night clubs in London with a fashionable and alluring clientele featuring the likes of Rihanna (who is known for causing mayhem by dancing on their tables). It's a strict guestlist bar and club in a glamorous speakeasy style. Some of the world’s best DJs from Will.I.Am to David Guetta sometime grace the decks. The music policy House, Hip Hop and commercial, but depends on the night. Our Experience: Chakana (Rose Club) has gained an enviable reputation as the hip club in London. The famous clientele that graces its floors reads like a who’s who in the present day music world. On arrival, the inconspicuous front doors give nothing away as to what lies behind them or even that there is a club there at all, apart from the obvious door security. Notoriously one of the most difficult clubs to get in, door policy is strictly guest list only, which is probably why it attracts the A list crowd. Inside, it’s not a large space, bar at one end, VIP tables at the other, more tables and a dance floor in the middle, people dancing everywhere - chairs - tables. This though all adds to the overall atmosphere as you are literally always in the thick of the action. The drinks list has all the normal club favourites and some interesting original offerings, prices though indicative of the clientele. If you want to be ‘where it’s all happening’ make sure you get on the guest list first! Who might you see there...

Situated in Kensington, Boujis can boast an impressive clientele list, including Will I am. David Haye and Cheryl Cole.

ME LONDON

336-337 The Strand London WC2R 1HA www.melia.com/me-london Located in the heart of the action and near the city's main theatres, exclusive boutiques, fashionable hot spots and trendy night clubs, ME London is one of the leading hotels in the centre of London. It is contemporary and cutting edge in style and located in one of the most important tourist destinations in the world. Amongst its fantastic services and facilities ME London provides 157 exquisitely designed, modern rooms, including 16 suites; two New York restaurants (Cucina Asellina and STK London); Roof Bar with outdoor terrace and spectacular panoramic views of London and a modern, fully equipped gym, open 24 hours a day. Our Experience: Fantastic location, right in the artistic and cultural heart of London, The Strand, this is and avant-garde hotel, with a very cosmopolitan atmosphere. If you want traditional then this isn’t the place for you, it’s cutting edge modern.

A regular celebrity favourite, with Rita Ora, Pixie Lott & Victoria Beckham all seen leaving above... to name but a few.

Service at the ME is attentive but relaxed, which is the general theme throughout your stay. You will want to keep coming back, if only for another visit to the roof bar.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

The reception on the first floor echoes futuristic. The bedrooms are equipped with modern bathrooms, mood lighting and al the normal extra associated with a 5 star hotel, plus a few little ‘surprising extras’. Besides housing 2 very popular restaurants, including one of the celebrity favourites, the STK London, the overwhelming feature has to be the rooftop bar. When staying at the hotel you are given priority access to the bar, otherwise you may join the queue outside the hotel side entrance door. The bar has become one of the places to be, with spectacular panoramic views of London, including the London Eye, Who might you see there... Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge and Covent Garden.

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY R e b e c c a D a k i n i s a P u b l i s h e d Author & Relationship Advisor specializing in Dating (including Online dating Profiles) and Intimacy. With over 20 years hands on experience in the professional dating environment and over 900 dates under her belt she is somewhat an expert in her field. She is currently writing a Sex Tips book and has various TV and radio appearances under her belt including Sky News, Playboy, ITV, BBC and Sky Atlantic. She has also written for magazines including Marie Claire, New, Bella and More, to name but a few. Rebecca offers dating and relationship advice, and help with online dating profiles, via Skype consultations, with ongoing support packages available to a select few clients.

Rebecca's Top 10 Online Dating Tips 1) Make sure that you are ready for dating before you sign up. Any negative emotional baggage from previous relationships will project onto any dates you have and deter people from wanting to see you again, which will knock your self-esteem. You have to be ready to trust. 2) Decide what you want, what your core values are and what your deal breakers are. Check that what you want is congruent with what you offer. For example I worked with a guy who was very negative and he was seeking a positive person. He hadn't considered that a positive person wouldn't want to date him. I worked with him to be more positive so that in turn he attracted positive ladies. 3) Make sure you get your photos right. Photos to avoid are selfies, ones with your mates and photos where an ex is cut out. If you don't have any friendly welcoming clear photos of yourself, get someone to take some. 4) Don't go on a dating website because you think you ought to, go on it because you want to. Otherwise you won't invest the time and effort needed for successful dating. Be prepared to invest a good few hours of your time a week to research matches, write messages, arrange dates and go on them. 5) Choosing a dating website that you have to fill in a lot of information and questions and pay for (for example match.com) usually means that there are more serious daters on there. Make sure you fill in all the information that you can because this will ensure that your matches are more targeted. 6) Decide what your strategy is and what works for you and stick to it. Do you have the time and are you more comfortable to engage in a lot of online live chat before you meet someone? Bear in mind some people will be wary of those that have so much time to chat online as they may assume they lack social skills in real life. Or are you limited with your time and prefer 2-3 online messages before securing a date to see if there's chemistry? Generally those willing to meet sooner are more serious daters. 7) Remember that not all profiles are live with active users, so it's imperative not to take things personally when you don't get replies to messages. Keep initial contact short but relevant. If you invest too much time in each email you will resent people for not replying. It should take no more than 2 minutes to write an email. You want to see if there is a mutual interest first before you invest too much time in communication. Online dating is a numbers game. If you are a guy you will generally get less messages and less replies – expect a 1-10 ratio of response, for girls it's slightly higher. 8) Be truthful on your profile and never try and hide something; whether it be age or size. If you lie it usually means you are not happy in yourself and this is a problem for dating. There is someone for everyone for all ages and sizes, however if you lie you will subject yourself to a series of one dates and your self-esteem continue it's decline.

10) Especially women should always meet in a public place and let someone know where they are going. Call/text to check in and out of the date so someone knows you are safe. I f o n l i n e d a t i n g i s n o t w o r k i n g f o r y o u , i t ' s u s u a l l y d o w n t o y o u r p r o f i l e . 9) It's good to have a Pay and Go phone rather than giving out your personal number. There are lots of weirdo's online so you want to be able to keep your personal number for when you trust someone and decide to date someone or have a relationship with them.

Skin care routine It is absolutely vital to determine your skin type prior to using any product on your skin. This is because the type of products you use will depend on your skin type. Your skin care professional will help you to know your skin type after checking your skin.

Cleansing Cleansers are of various types. Those with dry skin should use a cream cleanser while those with oily skin should use a medicated cleanser with salicylic acid designed to reduce breakouts. Wash your face with warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores. Then apply the cleanser in a gentle circular motion or with gentle upwards strokes and rinse thoroughly with cool water to close the pores. Tip: Never use very hot or very cold water.

Toning

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Cleanse Tone Moisturise 60

A good daily skin care routine is vital to keep your skin clean, hydrated, protected, healthy and glowing. And for this, it is important to make cleansing, toning, moisturising and protecting a regular feature in your routine.

Toners remove any residual cleanser left on your skin. Always use a toner formulated for your skin type. Those with very dry skin should use an alcohol-free toner, also called a tonic. The toner is applied with the help of a cotton ball, using a gentle upwards stroke.

Moisturising Moisturisers just like cleansers are of various types. If you have dry skin use an oil/cream based moisturisers, very sensitive skin then avoid moisturisers containing AHA’s [alpha hydroxy acids], perfumes and use moisturisers developed specially designed for sensitive skin using hypoallergenic products. Those with oily skin should opt for a gel-based moisturiser or one with in-built sunscreen.

Pimples can be managed

Apart from following the normal skin care routine you must:

Pimples or heat boils are caused due to excessive oil production, toxins, pollution and unhealthy habits.

Protection Use a sun block with SPF 15 or 30, depending on your daily activity 20-30 minutes before going in the sun. It is best to avoid sun tan

For those who suffer from pimples, it is best to use products containing tea tree oil, aloe vera, fuller’s earth [multani mitti], witch hazel [natural astringent], and zinc. Tea tree oil is effective as it contains bacteria-fighting substances. Aloe vera has a soothing effect on the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Aloe vera can be used fresh from the plant. This can also be refrigerated and used cool to calm the skin. Bathe at least twice daily and cleanse your skin well. This is especially important for those who perspire a lot. Fresh fruits, leafy green vegetables and water also help to keep skin healthy. Also, keep the skin calm and cool by using products containing calamine, cucumber or aloe vera. It is best to avoid comedogenic agents like cocoa butter, linseed oil, acetylated lanolin, butyl stearate, and isopropyl myristate. Looking perfect isn’t just about your makeup routine. Healthy skin begins from within. Hence it is absolutely essential to treat the skin from the inside as well as from the outside.

Rose Skin Tonic (200ml, £24)

• Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. • Shower immediately after exercising to maintain hygiene. • Wear open shoes to allow circulation, especially if you perspire a lot on the feet. This will keep odours away and prevent fungal infection due to the dampness. • Use a deodorant if you suffer from excess perspiration and body odours. • Wear loose cotton clothing to keep comfortable and prevent sun burns • Apply sun-block on all exposed areas. • Many women notice that their skin is extra oily around the time of their menstrual periods, during pregnancy, or at menopause. • To keep oil in control, cleanse the skin using a face wash at least twice daily. Also use a toner or astringent at home.

One important thing that small chains will always hold over large companies is the fantastic customer service; the care and attention to detail found at John's Opticians simply cannot be matched by large chains. This family run business was established in 1942 and over the years has built a strong and caring service for the community; they take the time to ensure that all the needs of the customer are met and every individual feels that their eye care and vision are well looked after. This opticians top priority is not profit or turnover but the eye care of the community and the satisfaction of all clients. Only recently, John’s Opticians gave a presentation to a group of elderly regarding the health of their eyes, common eye conditions and what to look out for which resulted in some very positive feedback, and is just one example of their commitment to their community. In fact last Christmas, at the Gordon Road Christmas fair, John's Opticians raised a wonderful £81.87 for the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind, once again proving that this is an establishment that cares. The two branches, based in Hockley and West Bridgford, offer a wide range of stylish Designer and non designer brands of the highest quality to meet all requirements and lifestyle needs. No one is rushed around in this friendly and welcoming chain, which really is a breath of fresh air compared to the strict hustle and bustle of some larger businesses.

Squashing

Nutritional Lets face it, nutrition, a bit like exercise can be an absolute mine field! With so many conflicting views and ideas it can make it hard to eat a nutritious diet. This article will help to squash some "nutritional myths" and shed some light on the best ways to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Myths

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

How many fad diets are out there? Atkins, Cambridge, Weight Watchers, Cucumber and Water... the list goes on! Statistics from the NHS and Health & Social Care Information Centre, show that up to 50% of women are on a diet at any given time and 90% of teenagers diet regularly. We are in an obesity epidemic in the UK. 34 % of men in the UK are obese and 36 % of women are obese. What's even more alarming is that in 2012 10 % of reception children (aged 4-5) were obese. These numbers are increasing. Only 24% of men and 29% of women eat 5 portions of fruit and veg every day. It's time to squash a few nutritional myths and get people on the right track to eating a healthy, nutritious and balanced diet.

Myth 1: Low fat is better for me than full fat. Ok this is a tricky one, some fats are good and some fats are bad, but on the whole if you see food packaging or adverts that say low fat it usually means one thing... High Sugar! Sugar is one of the biggest problems in the UK when it comes to nutrition, obesity and other diseases. The sugar content of the majority of low fat products is usually very high but what's worse is that these sugars are usually man made (processed sugars). Your body doesn't like many things that are man made. Processed sugars have no nutritional value to the body and the unused excess sugar from these will be stored by the body as fat. The best thing you can do is avoid the low fat products and stick to healthy fats. Healthy fats can be found in fish, meat, oils, plants, nuts and seeds.

Myth 2: I need lots of carbohydrates (carbs) for energy. This is far from the truth. Don't get me wrong, if you're a marathon runner or are an elite athlete training 4-8 hours a day then a high carb diet is important. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple (sugars) and complex (starches). For the average joe minimal carbs is the way to go. Some carbs, not zero carbs! If you're pretty sedentary then you won't need many carbs at all. What's more important is the type of carbs you are eating. We've already talked about sugars so let's look at starches. White pastas, rices, breads and potatoes are heavily processed. So opt for healthier starches, such as brown or wild rice, cous cous, spelt, rolled oats, bulgar wheat and sweet potato. Just like sugars any unused starch will be stored as fat.

Myth 2: I can eat whatever I want because I’m naturally slim, or because I work out regularly. This is one that I hear a lot. This is definitely not true! If you're eating a bad diet, it's still going to be unhealthy for you, regardless of your genetic make up or if you do 5 sessions at the gym per week. Health implications such as heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes can take years to develop. You may think you're bullet proof now eating pizza, McDonalds and fizzy drinks but eventually it will catch up with you. It's as important to be healthy on the inside as it is on the outside.

In conclusion, healthy nutrition is about planning, preparation and making the right choices. If you are eating a healthy, well balanced and nutritious diet, whilst maintaining a regular exercise routine, then you are well on your way to a lifestyle of wellness. CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING 65

WEDDING FEATURE

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) 12 Million and counting! Everyone knows someone who has this condition. With around 10% of the UK population having the symptoms of IBS, it's pretty much a given that we all know at least one or maybe two people who have it. It may be a family member, a friend, or a colleague at work. You may be one of the 12 million that have this frustrating and, sometimes debilitating condition. 10% of the UK population are afflicted with the symptoms of IBS, but in my experience, this is a very conservative figure, and 20% would be much more realistic. IBS has four different classifications - IBS (C) where the predominant symptom is constipation, IBS (D) where diarrhoea is predominant, IBS (A) where there is alternating constipation and diarrhoea and IBS (post-infection) where IBS has developed as a result of a gut infection, perhaps food poisoning. In my opinion, there at least a couple of classifications missing here - IBS (B). B for bloating, and IBS (P). P for pain.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Of the IBS sufferers I treat at the Clinic, at least 80% of them have bloated bellies. Many of them look pregnant, and this can be distressing and embarrassing. They wake up in the morning with nice, flat tummies, but by the afternoon, their tummies take on a life of their own and begin to expand. By the evening, they are extremely bloated and uncomfortable.

66

Pain. This is the most distressing symptom of them all. Many people with IBS suffer with abdominal pain, some intermittently and some constantly, with the pain waking them up in the middle of the night sometimes. This pain can be very worrying for some IBS sufferers. They've had medication from their Doctor, they've had a barrage of tests, scans and x-rays at the hospital and, guess what, the Hospital can't find anything wrong. All the tests are negative. Now this is a good thing. At least it rules out the fact that there is nothing more sinister causing the symptoms like ovarian cancer (almost identical symptoms to IBS). However, it doesn't help the poor IBS sufferer who is still getting the pain. So what can you do about it?

First of all, I would recommend that you try the following: Don't worry! Although a distressing, and sometimes painful condition, IBS is not life-threatening, and research has proven that having IBS does not lead to a higher risk of bowel cancer. 'Rest' your digestive system by eliminating gluten and cows milk products for a couple of weeks. These two can cause hypersensitivity in the stomach and gut. Avoid caffeine too, and don't drink carbonated drinks. Caffeine irritates the stomach, and with carbonated drinks you're just adding more gas. Chew your food well, and don't drink water with your meals. Water will dilute your digestive enzymes, making them weaker and so less efficient at breaking down your food. Try not to eat when feeling stressed, anxious or angry. The digestive system will 'close down for business' in these situations. Not always easy I know, but eat when feeling relaxed, and in an upright position, not sat on the settee watching tv! Take a multi strain probiotic with food once a day to re-colonise and re-populate your intestines with lots of beneficial bacteria. I haven't treated a single IBS sufferer (and I've treated thousands at the Clinic) that didn't have an imbalance in their gut flora, and needed probiotics.

Nottingham Health Shop Probiotics recommended by Nottingham Health Shop, to help keep your gut happy and healthy. Probiotics are mico-organisms that are beneficial for humans. They are essential for maintaining good digestive health and supporting our immune system.

– for those of you who are generally fit and well, with no tummy or bowel problems, but have an active and demanding life, we would recommend 'Daily Wellbeing'.

Over 50's – we would recommend a high-strength, multi-strain probiotic to help support the small and large intestine. As we age, the numbers of bifidi bacteria in the large intestine are depleted. Optibac's 'For Daily Wellbeing – Extra Strength' will help to balance this.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome – we're experts on IBS, and haven't met a single IBS sufferer that didn't benefit from probiotics. We always recommend BioNutri's Ecodophilus. This multi strain probiotic contains strains of acidophilus and bifidi, together with kefir.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (including Ulcerative Colitis, Diverticulitis, and Crohn's Disease) – we would recommend Optibac's saccharomyces boulardii probiotic (not actually a probiotic, more a beneficial yeast). It naturally stops diarrohea quickly, and is as fast as loperaminde-based antidiarrhoeal medicines.

All the above probiotics are made in England, and the Practitioners at Nottingham Health & Wellbeing Clinic have been using them, and recommending them for decades.

Make 2014 Your Healthiest Year Ever Charity Event Ali West, personal trainer, hosted this event, held at the sports bar at Notts County, in association with Framework. Proceeds of the event were donated to Framework, supporting the charity in continuing their excellent work in helping to reduce the number of people sleeping rough. Framework supports more than 9000 vulnerable people across the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. Because January was typically the month where people would embark on a new health and fitness regime, Ali wanted to organise an event that could educate people on how they can ensure their enthusiasm for health and fitness lasts more than a month. The evening involved talks and advice, on health, well being and nutrition and included a range of health and fitness stalls and raffle prizes, including signed memorabilia. Whilst people are lacing up their trainers and heading out for a run may think its cold, that is nothing compared to what homeless people across Nottinghamshire will be facing during the winter. Aquinas Foundation Launch GB Swimming Project The Aquinas Foundation launched its GB swimming project as an incentive for children in schools both primary and secondary to aim high and to work harder to achieve their goals within the school. The project included 10 schools from Nottinghamshire which took place on Friday 31st January and was a fantastic day proving to be a huge success for all involved. We wanted this project to focus on aspirations and motivating the children to be the best they can possibly be! The swimming lesson would be used as a reward for the 2 children who have shown an improvement in the schools chosen area and for the children who have had a significant turnaround showing a clear focus and determination towards a goal.

Amongst many international event successes Sasha is a European junior Gold, silver and bronze medallist and the 2010 commonwealth games Bronze medalist we were very fortunate to have her there to help the children with the lesson.

All of a Semi-permanent eyelash extensions

The eyes are the windows to the soul, or so they say! What I do know is that most of the women I’ve met want to enhance their eyes more than anything else, they are one of our main features and enhancing them can have an amazing effect on the way we look and feel. Hello, My name is Lauren and I am an eyelash addict….and expert! Personally, I’ve been on a mission with eyelashes and how to get longer, fuller, more glamorous lashes for years…. I have tried most things on the market to get the affect I want, from a million different mascaras, lash fibers, serums, and strip lashes even having my eyeliner tattooed on! I finally found Flutter and discovered eyelash extensions and have never looked back, I even became and eyelash extension artist, my passion for eyelashes is actually an obsession…. So lets take a journey through the world of eyelashes, hopefully with some education and maybe a few new things to try in our bid to get the bambi, doe eyed look we all crave!

Mascara The easiest way to enhance your lashes and the most inexpensive, here are my top picks: Maybelline – Great Lash (£4.99) Benefit – They’re Real (£18.50) Mascara is great as it can be quick and easy and relatively cheap, however it is unlikely to give you any more length or volume as it is just a coating for your natural lashes.

Lash Fibers You use this product with your mascara, coating your lashes with mascara then brushing on the white fibers and coating once more with mascara. This can add a little length and volume but can mean clumpy lashes! My top pick is: Model Co. – Fibre Lash brush on false lashes (£35)

Great for a night out or as a one off – not great for long term use as they can damage your natural lashes by pulling them out when you pull off the strip, or can be too heavy and pull out the lashes that way. Eyelure do a great range of different styles from natural to full on glam at reasonable prices.

Serums Growth serums are a great way to improve your natural lashes, you need to buy a good quality one which can be expensive but it isnt worth buying a cheap alternative. A good serum needs to be used at least once a day along the lash line, continuosly or it will not work. It may take 6 weeks for you to notice a difference. The serum stimulates the roots of the lashes, bringing about a longer growth phase while also creating fuller, stronger lashes We use M2 Beaute Eyelash Activating Serum at Flutter.

Semi Permanent Eyelash Extensions This is by far the best way to get the lashes you desire, however I would strongly advise you do your research and pick a reputable therapist as bad eyelash extensions can damage your lashes. As with any treatment or product you really do get what you pay for. There is a huge variation on the market in terms of skill and quality of products used, including the extensions and the adhesive used. A good quality, full set of individual eyelash extensions takes around 1-2 hours to complete and should always include a consultation. The lash extension procedure itself is painless, involving a synthetic lash being

applied directly to each individual lash. Flutter offers a variety of lengths, thicknesses and curls so you can choose the exact look you want.

Benefit - They’re Real Mascara

This can range from a subtle enhancement to a full on false lash effect. Our semi permanent eyelash extensions are suitable for all ages and are especially anti-aging for mature ladies, giving the illusion of lifting and defining the eye area. Lashes that are used are black or brown giving a mascara effect, up to 200% more length and volume and are completely waterproof.

Maybelline - Great Lash Mascara Flutter is a mobile service which operates around the country, so that you can have your lashes done in the comfort of your own home – very relaxing! I work in the Nottinghamshire area and for more details on our service and the world of eyelash extensions, please take a look at our website: www.fluttereyes.co.uk Lauren Parsons – 07449877609 lauren@fluttereyes.co.uk

...For Men

It's not just women who are concerned about their looks, these days an increasing number of men are turning to cosmetic surgery to enhance their appearance and boost their selfconfidence. In a series of features City Life looks at some of the more common aesthetic improvements men are partaking in to retain their youth. In this issue we look at the face. Anti-Wrinkle treatment by injection Our faces can be wonderfully expressive, our numerous different facial muscles allowing us to demonstrate a wide array of emotions. In our youth, the skin folds created by our facial muscles disappear almost instantly. Unfortunately, as the years pass by our skin loses some of its elasticity, meaning that the skin folds don't disappear, but instead present themselves as unwanted lines and wrinkles. Muscle relaxing injections use nerve inhibitor, and when injected into a muscle it blocks the nerve impulses which cause the muscle to contract. When injected into specific facial muscles (namely those which cause the skin folds to develop) those muscles contract far less, and so the wrinkling effect is diminished. This leads to a smoother, more youthful appearance. A brow lift, or eyebrow lift surgery, will help to remove your wrinkles, and give you a more youthful appearance again. Not only will that enhance the way you look, it should also greatly boost your self-confidence.

Dermal Fillers Our skin contains a naturally occurring substance known as hyaluronic acid, but over time the level of this substance in our skin diminishes, such that the skin can lose its shape and volume. This effect, combined with muscle activity, contributes to the development of unwanted lines and wrinkles, especially in the lower part of the face. Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels, containing hyaluronic acid, which add volume to the skin, filling the depressed area to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Ear Correction Surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty to use the medical name, is a straightforward procedure that removes some of the excess skin and tissue around the area to give you a fresher, more youthful look.

Face Lift Nature is a wonderful thing, but the ageing process is something that most of us could happily do without. Unfortunately, you can't turn back the clock, but you can choose to have a face lift which is designed to remove heavy, tired features to make you look younger again. You have three main options with face lifts: a full face lift, a mini face lift and the mid-face lift surgery, and you should explore these options fully with your consultant surgeon to find the one that suits you best.

Nose Reshaping Surgery

BEFORE

AFTER

Your nose is the central feature of your face and, if you're not happy with its size or shape, then this is sure to have an impact on your self-confidence. A 'nose job', as it is commonly known, or rhinoplasty, to use its medical name, can change the shape of the nose, reposition the bridge, remove bumps or alter the tip

Ears that stick out too much, or that are too large for your face, can make you self-conscious about your whole appearance. Ear correction surgery, or pinnaplasty as it is formally known, is designed to make your ears less prominent and leave them perfectly matched to the rest of the features on your face.

Masquerade Ball celebrates over ÂŁ250,000 raised for charity Champions (UK) plc celebrated over a decade of business at a very special charity event, The Masquerade Ball. The glittering occasion highlighted the past year's successes and offered an excellent opportunity to raise money for the hospice charity, Rainbows. Guests included key business individuals, celebrities and friends of the Costock based company, all gathering for the glamorous black tie event. The event, hosted by snooker legend Willie Thorne, took place at Leicester's King Power Stadium where guests were welcomed down a red carpet and greeted with a glittering champagne reception. The ballroom was festooned with elegant decoration with the powerful, soulful voice of X Factor contestant Faye Horne, filling the air. Guests enjoyed a delicious four course meal including slow braised lamb shank and treacle tart. With brilliant performances from bands Schwing and Interstellar and resident piano player at The Savoy and Dorchester hotels, Adrian Dixon, the evening continued to be a fantastic celebration. World champion dancers, 15 year old Lloyd and Rebecca, also took to the stage, wowing onlookers as they floated around the dance floor. The event was an important opportunity to raise money for the evening's chosen charity, Rainbows. As part of their on-going work with the Loughborough based hospice charity, Champions (UK) plc continually works to raise thousands for the charity. In 2013 alone, the company raised over ÂŁ250,000 for a variety of charities and the Masquerade Charity Ball proved to be an excellent start to the fundraising effort for 2014. Guests took part in a series of different charity activities, including a raffle that provided the winners with a series of fantastic prizes, including Leicester Racecourse tickets and a Google Nexus 7 Tablet. Many also took part in both a silent auction and exciting live auction, hosted by television auctioneer and antiques expert Charlie Ross, generating even more donations to Rainbows through the sale of sporting and historic memorabilia, holidays and a range of luxury lifestyle items.

There was also a chance for one lucky person to win a diamond worth ÂŁ1,000 from Lumbers jewellers by purchasing a special glass of champagne, with all money raised going to Rainbows.

INSIDE OR OUT THERE'S A WONDERFUL WOOD LOOK ALIKE TILE JUST FOR YOU It doesn't matter if you are planning a fabulous new floor or a garden deck, there is a wonderful wood look alike tile just for you. Wood look alike tiles are now so realistic and versatile – they are well on the way to taking over from real wood in all areas of the home and garden.

They are made from porcelain, one of the hardest materials known to designers. They will look as good in the years ahead as they did the day were new.” Real wood needs constant attention and extra care to avoid disfiguring scratches but ceramic tile will stand up to anything normal use can throw at it.”

porcelain, with an amazing amount of attention to detail – including saw marks on the surface. The range and choice of wood look alike styles is expanding all the time – as leading manufacturers develop new lines in response to their ever-growing popularity. I would say that the development of lookalikes is one of the most dramatic and successful innovations in the industry in the past decade.

Interior designers and gardeners are now turning to wood look alikes for their fantastic hard wearing properties as well as their highly attractive appearance.

There is now a very wide range of wood look alikes to suit all applications and budgets.

Here at EMC Tiles, we have played a leading role in promoting these fabulous products by making sure that our customers are always the first to be introduced to each new innovation.”

Barry Slawson, managing director of East Midlands Ceramics says the technical development and popularity of wood look alike tiles in recent years has

Gardeners have certainly taken to heart the look alike decking made from tough porcelain. It has proved that its qualities are ideal for outdoor applications too.

Whereas wood decking demands almost constant upkeep to maintain it in peak condition, the porcelain version is easy to lay and will stand up to everything the weather and heavy garden use can throw at it – without losing any of its attractive finish.” Barry Slawson says: “They will never rot, unlike timber they don't need regular weatherproofing treatment and they won't be damaged by staining or sparks or embers from a barbeque. Wood look alike tiles are a dramatic growth area – proving once again that the exciting and ever-developing world of ceramic tiles is always in the forefront when it comes to offering designers new choices to bring their ideas to life.”

Garden office, annex, hobby room or just somewhere to escape to, what will you do in yours?

We are passionate about what we do and making sure your garden room is exactly what you want, means everything to us. VOTED THE UK’S BEST GARDEN ROOMS

Where good design doesn’t cost more. Designed and built to suit your requirements, our award winning buildings rarely require planning permission and can be built in a matter of days with minimal disruption. Garden office or annex - all year round comfort.

New Year, New Garden Room Garden rooms are a fantastic, modern, innovative creation that allows you to gain extra space without the hassle of moving house or building an old fashioned conservatory. Today, garden rooms are used in many different ways; a lot of people simply use their extra space as a place to relax away from their house, others have had the building specifically created to use as an office, a gym, a place to entertain or for guests and family to stay; others have even used them as a music room so as not to disturb, or be disturbed by, others. One of the most popular uses for contemporary garden rooms is as an office and with the number of homeworkers and homebased businesses in the UK rising annually; more people are taking advantage of accessible technology and cutting out their daily commuting time and costs. The garden room has stepped in as the perfect way to keep your home life and work life separate. Perhaps you are in the music profession or are a music teacher

and you need somewhere sound-proof for practicing, teaching or recording: garden studios can free up all of that space used to keep you instruments and equipment and could even save you the expense of renting other studios (and the related travel costs). Maybe you are a fitness fanatic and you are looking for somewhere to hold all of your equipment – if so, a garden gym may be for you, eliminating the inconvenience of using your local gym as well as working around opening times. Garden rooms are also an ideal solution for families looking to house their close relatives or friends in a safe, secure and comfortable home, ensuring peace of mind. A granny annexe for example, is a great solution if your parent(s) could use a smaller place but want to maintain independence, what better solution that building them their own home effortlessly close to your own. The purpose built granny annexe can perfectly meet the needs of your relative, moreover, they can have input into their new home's design. What you may not realise is that a granny annexe is a bigger version of a garden room; therefore anything that can be accomplished in a garden room can be achieved in the design of a granny annexe. Maybe you have older children that are ready to move in with partners but don't have the income available to pay rent, or maybe they want to save a deposit to buy a house. A garden room can offer a warm and cosy solution to the problem.

At Roomworks, each one of our contemporary garden studios is tailored to your own specific requirements. Call Paul on 07789 681 683 for a no obligation consultation.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

There are so many options for your garden room and the beginning of January is the perfect time to consider how you would like to use and get the most out of your garden throughout the year. Imagine hiring a beautiful yacht. Now Imagine the disappointment if the elegant, sexy boat you thought you’d hired for your family and friends turned out to be an out-dated motor cruise with zero Wow-factor. With a large percentage of the world’s 10,000-plus super yachts available for luxury yacht charter it’s crucial to do your research. Though before you start, let us super-soak your appetite with our famous 5.

FAMOUS 5 YACHTS

The Big Boy - Eclipse Roman Abramovich’s yacht Eclipse was understood to be the largest super yacht in the world (until recently), and possibly even the most expensive ever built. She cost a reported £700 million to build, and needs a crew of up to 60 when operational. The super yacht, built at the Blohm and Voss shipyard in Germany, is the fourth super yacht commissioned by Abramovich and measures 162 metres. It is, unfortunately, unlikely that this super yacht will be ever be available for luxury yacht charter, unless you’re best buddies with the billionaire or have a matching bank balance.

The Speed Demon - The World is Not Enough - Millennium 140

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

The great news for those wanting to book a super yacht charter is that one of the fastest boats in the world is up for grabs. The World is Not Enough - Millennium 140, a luxury 42 metre super yacht with a top speed of 70 knots is possibly the fastest yacht to date. Designed by Mulder Design, the super yacht can accommodate 10 guests and was built in 2004 by Millennium Super yachts. The typical speed for a super yacht of her size is between 20-25 knots - she’s fast.

96

FAMOUS 5 YACHTS

The Tallest - Mirabella V Another contender for those looking for an extra-special luxury yacht charter this summer is the world’s largest sloop, Mirabella V, which is also equipped with the world’s tallest carbon-fibre masts. Mirabella V accommodates 14 in six double cabins and a luxurious full-beam master suite. There is also a fully-equipped gym and sauna.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING 97

The Luxury Escape - Maltese Falcon

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

If you’re not impressed by size - then why not consider the Maltese Falcon for your super yacht charter. Understood to be the world’s most luxurious super yacht, this 88 metre vessel has five suites and a master suite, as well as a majestic dining room. She also comes equipped with a gym, two Segway scooters, and a full time on-board sports therapist/masseuse.

98

FAMOUS 5 YACHTS

The Coolest - Exuma The accolade for one of our coolest super yachts goes to Exuma, a 50 meter motor yacht from the same shipyard that built the Maltese Falcon. Guaranteed to win you ‘Wow-factor’ on your luxury yacht charter, Exuma can accommodates ten guests in five luxurious staterooms decorated exquisitely with natural woods and the finest Italian marble. This style queen was awarded the Rina Green Plus Platinum certificate in recognition of her commitment to environmental excellence, as well as the Most Innovative Yacht of the Year awards at the 2010 World Yacht Trophy. Still, if none of these take your fancy there are thousands of luxury vessels available to charter for a luxury yacht charter holiday.

City Life Touring the Costa Blanca ...Benidorm

Benidorm is a seaside resort on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, Valencia, Spain. It has a large Spanish population as well as a large retired European expat population. Benidorm was built compact thanks to the foresight of the town's mayor who in the 1960s saw a vision of a resort which grew upwards. Now it is slowly spreading westwards. Today Benidorm is famous for tall hotels and holiday apartment blocks, some of which are over 25 floors high. Since 2006 Benidorm has also seen a huge increase in the quality of accommodation and now attracts not just package holiday visitors but tourists who demand 5-star hotel and spa complexes. Tree lined wide avenues give a feeling of space where there are over 1,000 places to eat and drink and watch the town in full swing. The streets offer a very vibrant atmosphere day and night with something to offer visitors of any age group. There are over 41,000 hotel beds and modern tourist apartments. The biggest assets are the 4kms of Blue Flag** safe sandy beaches which draw people from all over Spain in Summer months and from all over Europe 365 days of the year. Benidorm is an ideal sun destination both in summer and winter due to the mild climate where day time temperatures rarely fall below 18c. Discovering central Benidorm is easy on foot as that area is very compact especially the Levante Playa area which is

chosen by most visitors as the area to stay. It is easy to walk a few miles and still remain in town.

CITY LIFE & COUNTY LIVING

Benidorm has two spectacular Blue Flag beaches - Levante and the more sedate Poniente, which is preferred by locals and families. The Poniente Playa has a new 13 million Euro promenade including a boardwalk at beach level and easier access for wheelchair users. In total there are 4kms of safe, sandy beach in Benidorm.

100

As a purpose built beach resort everything is geared toward fun and enjoyment there is therefore not much to see for those looking for culture. The surrounding towns and villages which are less than 20 minutes' drive by car or 30 minutes by bus are well worth exploring for anyone looking for "Real Spain". In Benidorm the old town does still retain some of the quaint past when the town was a small village. Head for the old town Church where you will find the most interesting part of the town.

ust like the legendary original Targa model, the new model features the characteristic wide bar in place of the Bpillars, a movable roof section above the front seats and a wrap-around rear window with no C-pillar. innovative remake of the classic vehicle from 1965. The model shares a great deal in common with the 911 Carrera 4 cabriolet models; up to the window line, the technology and body of the vehicles is more or less the same. The combination of the wide rear end that is typical of all-wheel drive models, the Targa bar and the dome-shaped rear window gives the latest 911 an extremely sporty appearance and a low-slung profile.

The rear-weighted design of the PTM allwheel drive fitted as standard is a typical Porsche feature, and guarantees that this latest 911 model also offers optimum driving dynamics on all road surfaces and in all weather conditions.

As with the predecessor model, the new Targa generation comes in two versions available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a 3.4-litre, 350 hp (257 kW) flat engine. mph. Its combined fuel consumption figures are between 29.7 and 32.5 mpg, depending on transmission, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 223 and 204 g/km. The top model is the 911 Targa 4S, which delivers 400 hp (294 kW) from a displacement of 3.8 litres. This model reaches a top speed of 182mph and, with the PDK and Sport Chrono package fitted, accelerates in 4.6 seconds. Its combined fuel consumption fluctuates between 28.2 and 30.7 mpg, depending on transmission, which corresponds to a CO2 level of between 237 and 214 g/km.
