Cape Florida Lighthouse

Florida

Lighthouses A stunning lighthouse road trip on the Florida coast By Jeweliana Register

8 |

FamilyMagazine

It’s summer in the Sunshine State, so it’s officially time to break out your favorite flip-flops and lather on the sunscreen. With many beach days ahead of you, you may be looking for a way to tour historic Florida while soaking in the best views of the sea. While there are additional lighthouses in the state, consider checking out these nine beauties that can be made into an epic summer road trip.

Amelia Island Lighthouse

St. George Island Lighthouse

St. Mark's Lighthouse

St. Augustine Lighthouse Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

Cape St. George Island Lighthouse

We begin our tour on the west coast of the state, but of course the journey can begin wherever you like. The historic lighthouse was originally built in 1858, but sadly collapsed in 2005 due to erosion. The pieces were salvaged, and the lighthouse was reconstructed in 2008, making it a must-see. This beauty is definitely worth the 92-step climb to the top! 2B East Gulf Beach Drive, St. George Island, FL 32328 stgeorgelight.org

St. Mark's Lighthouse

A beautiful white structure, St. Mark's Lighthouse, built in 1842, earns the title of the second-oldest lighthouse in the state. Sitting at roughly 80 feet tall, this stunning lighthouse is located on the Apalachee Bay, making it a little different than the other lighthouses on this trip. The site has a giant reflector lens and is known to be a popular spot for weddings. 1255 Lighthouse Road, Saint Marks, FL 32355 stmarksrefuge.org

Amelia Island Lighthouse

Recognized as Florida’s oldest lighthouse, this beauty was constructed in 1838 using materials from the former lighthouse on Cumberland Island. While this lighthouse is a fairly quick drive from our area, do keep in mind that tour schedules may vary for this location. This white lighthouse is full of rich history and lots of stories! 215 O'Hagan Lane, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 fbfl.us/474/Amelia-Island-Lighthouse-Tour

St. Augustine Lighthouse

If you are a frequent St. Augustine beachgoer, you may be familiar with this black and white striped lighthouse. Built in 1874, this structure features a bright red top deck with a gorgeous view. Traditional tours are available to the public, along with ghost tours after dark. 81 Lighthouse Avenue, St. Augustine, FL 32080 staugustinelighthouse.org

Juniper Inlet Lighthouse Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Cape F Lorida Lighthouse

Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse

Known for its height, this lighthouse proudly stands at 175 feet, earning the title of the tallest lighthouse in the state. Combined with the height, the striking red color of this 1887 structure makes it a must-see! Be sure to check out information about touring the lighthouse and visiting the museum as well. 4931 S Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet, FL 32127 ponceinlet.org

Hillsboro Lighthouse

Moving right along down the state, the next stop is the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. Packed full of rich history, this lighthouse was originally constructed in 1868, but was moved inland 30 years later. The striking black and white stripes were chosen as an attempt to warn ships of the potential dangers of the coast’s shoals. 670 Dave Nisbet Drive, Cape Canaveral, FL 32920 canaverallight.org

Located between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, the 1907 Hillsboro Lighthouse has a complicated history, complete with over 17 rejections for the structure to be built. The visit to this beauty is a bit complicated as well, requiring some planning, as it is only open to the public a few days each year and requires a boat ride to its site. The view of the sparkling clear water is worth the extra planning, and the unique structure is unlike any other on this list. 2801, 907 Hillsboro Mile, Hillsboro Beach, FL 33062 hillsborolighthouse.org

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

Cape Florida Lighthouse

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse

The oldest existing structure in Palm Beach County, this lighthouse was designed in 1860, only to be lit for a few years before the Confederate States Army extinguished the light during the Civil War. After the war ended, the light was illuminated once again and still guides ships to the shore today. The over 150-feet red beauty is surrounded by lush greenery in the stunning natural Florida. 500 Captain Armour's Way, Jupiter, FL 33469 jupiterlighthouse.org

We round out this lighthouse tour with a real beauty located in Key Biscayne. The rich history of this black and white structure makes it a must-see on your trip to the tip of Florida, and the beautiful Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park where it is located is also worth exploring. This tropical paradise site will be sure to melt your troubles away. 1200 South Crandon Blvd, Key Biscayne, FL 33149 floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/bill-baggscape-florida-state-park SUMMER 2019 | 9

A Family Business Committed to Serving North Florida Since 1980 A D VE R TOR I A L

Headquartered in Lake City, Lewis Insurance is a locally run business that has served the North Florida community for decades. While their office officially opened its doors in 1980, their passion for helping others and providing quality insurance to the everyday person really began in March of 1949, when Driscal Lewis began selling life insurance door to door.

ALONG WITH THEIR SERVICE IN OUR AREA, LEWIS INSURANCE REACHES FAR BEYOND THEIR HOMETOWN, SERVING CLIENTS IN 14 OTHER STATES!

Admiring the example set before him, Driscal’s son, Tommy, followed in his father’s footsteps and founded Lewis Insurance in May of 1980. The family ties do not stop at father and son duo Driscal and Tommy, but also extend another generation to Tommy’s son Brian Lewis, who began working for the family business in 1997 after graduating from college. Insurance is not just their chosen career paths, it is in their blood!

From the founding date, Tommy Lewis set out to provide customers with a customizable insurance policy made individually for them, all in preparation for those unexpected situations life can throw our way. Seeing his father’s dedicated, honest and hard-working nature, Tommy Lewis created a brick-and-mortar business that would become an asset to many families and businesses in the North Florida region for decades to come.

In 2019, Lewis Insurance continues to offer reliable care and peace of mind for their customers, providing individualized coverage plans for auto, home, business and life insurance policies. Their team is pleased to stand upon their four pillars promises: respecting their customers, exceeding expectations, acting in a professional manner, and providing full value for premiums. Taking pride in customer service, the Lewis Insurance team is proud to welcome their customers into a relationship that feels like family.

“As a third generation Lewis, I consider it not only a privilege, but also a duty to continue with our heritage of excellence in serving our customers.” —Brian Lewis

3 Reasons to Spend Time with

Family!

Disrupt your normal schedule and make some memories this Summer! Load up the family and enjoy our area - Natural North Florida. It's simply the BEST. #1. It builds children's self-esteem. Children who spend time with their parents participating in activities together build a positive sense of self-worth. When children feel they are valued by their parents, they feel more positive about themselves. Family activities don’t have to be expensive trips out to be meaningful. The important part is just being together. You could go for a bike ride or play a game together. #2. It develops positive behaviors. Children and adolescents who spend more time with their parents are less likely to get involved in risky behaviors. According to studies done by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse via Arizona State University, teens who have infrequent family dinners are twice as likely to use tobacco, nearly twice as likely to use alcohol, and one and a half times more likely to use marijuana. #3. It promotes healthy eating habits. Children who frequently eat meals with their families usually have improved dietary intake compared to those who don’t eat as often with family members. Nothing says family summer fun more than relaxing or splashing around at the river, lake, or springs on a hot day. And this is one activity that doesn’t require a lot of advance planning; just grab some sunblock, a picnic lunch, and a few pool floats, and you’re ready to go. Not to mention, some of Florida's most popular family spots are in our own backyard!

Southside Sports Complex Wins Venue of the Year Award

Columbia County Tourist Development Council, Columbia County Sports Commission, and parks and landscape staff pictured with the Venue of the Year award presented for the Southside Sports Complex in Lake City.

If you’ve ever hit a ball or had a child who hit a ball competitively, then chances are you’ve been a part of a sports community. The Southside Sports Complex in Lake City is honored to have one of the best venues in the state of Florida, and now has the award to prove it, bringing home the Small Market Venue of the Year Award by the Florida Sports Foundation at the Foundation’s annual summit this past May in Destin. Not only does the sports program help to bring families together and teach children valuable life skills, but it is also one of the largest sources of tourism dollars in Columbia County with thousands of families flocking to Lake City on tournament weekends. The award caps a record-breaking year for the sports complex. In 2018, the venue hosted 41 events that attracted over 50,000 visitors to Lake City and Columbia County, generating an estimated economic impact of more than $8 million for the community.

“Florida is recognized globally as a premier sports tourism destination, and for the Southside Sports Complex to be awarded venue of the year means so much for our community. It’s an amazing compliment to the leaders who had the vision of what sports could do for Lake City and Columbia County. The facility is an incredible asset for us as we grow and develop our sports tourism efforts across the county,” says Alden Rosner, sports marketing director for the Columbia County Sports Commission. The complex boasts 30 athletic fields spread across 146 acres and is a well-known youth baseball and softball venue, hosting multiple state and regional tournaments annually. “Our park staff works tirelessly to make sure our complex and fields stay in pristine condition. We are proud of this accomplishment and to offer a beautiful home away from home for thousands of families.” —Clint Pittman, Parks and Landscape Director

ADVERTORIAL

By Jeweliana Register

Have you ever experienced the frustration of receiving a medication that did not work for you? Perhaps you’ve felt hopeless in the pursuit of your healthiest life, or received news that you need to make some healthy changes in your life. No matter what your story has been thus far, Advatest is presenting consumers with new ways to take control of their health journey, all through a simple test that can be administered at your home. Using cutting edge technology, the Advatest vision is to make DNA testing accessible to everyone. While this may seem a bit daunting, rest assured that the testing is simple and painless! How it works The screening offered by Advatest can be administered just about anywhere, at a health fair or your home, and does not take long. You’ll simply complete a noninvasive oral swab that will be sent off to highly trained laboratories for analysis. Within a few weeks, you’ll receive a comprehensive report all about your genetic information. The best part? Advatest works directly with Medicare and Medicaid, making this screening available at no cost to the patient! What will I receive after testing? Along with your new-found information about your genetic makeup, you will receive documents detailing a plethora of different medications and treatments that are ideal, adequate, and not recommended for your healthcare journey. Think of this as your road map to wellness—or at least a piece

of your road to a healthy life. Your comprehensive report will outline your information, and, should you have any questions, an Advatest representative can assist you with understanding your charts. Why should I DNA test? By providing your color-coded DNA test results directly to your primary care providers, your healthcare plan can be tailored with your hereditary makeup in mind. In addition to individualized care for optimal results, your DNA can also be helpful for creating personalized nutrition plans. Advocates of DNA-based diets support the idea that each person’s body may operate a bit differently, meaning that the way you metabolize carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and sugar may be drastically different than someone else’s. By DNA testing, your primary care providers will receive information about your hereditary risks and challenges, enabling your healthcare plan to be specially formulated for you and your needs.

“As a life-long member of this community and working in healthcare for over 35 years, we are proud to be able to bring this technology to Lake City and surrounding areas. Our goal is to provide testing that patients may not otherwise have access to.” —Angie Welch, Advatest North Florida Manager

Simplifying the complex nature of DNA testing by bringing cutting-edge science and technology directly to the consumer

“Think of your genes as the story. DNA is the language your story is written in. We’re excited at the opportunity to bring this lifesaving technology to our community.” —James Walsh, Clinical Laboratory Scientist With your participation in DNA testing through Advatest, you are taking a step towards better understanding your health traits and tendencies long term, along with potential implications for those who share your DNA. Am I a candidate? To receive this testing opportunity at no cost, you must meet the requirements mandated by healthcare regulations. For more information about Advatest and to find out if you are a candidate for the testing, visit advatest.com or contact one of the Advatest trained genetic counselors.

Tests are conducted via a noninvasive oral swab, which is submitted to one of a network of highly trained and technologically advanced laboratories for processing. Combined tests offer valuable information for doctors and patients to create informed strategies for appropriate diagnostic plans, monitoring, and any potential treatments.

PGx: Pharmacogenetic testing indicates ways genes affect how someone will react to specific drug treatments. This helps physicians prescribe medications for maximum effectiveness and minimal adversity.

CGx: Cancer genomics screening provides critical insight on the ways genetic mutations might create risks for various cancers. Early detection through this type of testing increases chances for survival and successful treatment.

There’s truly nothing sweeter than quality time spent with family. From fishing off the dock in the warmth of the summer sun to spending time around a campfire in the evening, summer days are meant to be spent by the water. Luckily for North Florida dwellers, the water is just a short drive away—or a short walk down the family river house dock.

Rema, Wittleigh, Buie, and Patty Summerlin; Betty Patt Witt; Gigi, Callahan, and Witt Register

FamilyMagazine

Cousins Witt, Callahan, Wittleigh, Rema and Buie love to spend time fishing off the dock and eating boiled peanuts together.

For Betty Patt Witt and her family, summer means school is out and family time is the number one task on their agenda. A mother to two girls and grandmother to four girls and one boy, Betty Patt makes it a priority to gather the family together as often as possible at their family river house. Located on the beautiful Ichetucknee River, the scenic home was built in 1973 by Betty Patt’s parents, Archie and Genevieve Buie.

Over the years, the river home has been a place where the family slows down and truly enjoys watching each other grow. It’s no secret that life can occasionally get in the way of family fun, but the Witt, Summerlin, and Register family make it their mission to gather together any chance they get. Spending summers at the river house is only one of the ways they ensure their quality time together is cherished.

“My dad drew the plans for this place on a napkin, then met with a contractor and had it built,” Betty Patt says. “Then the house flooded the next year.”

“We very much believe in family,” Gigi expresses. “We attend church together at First Methodist Church where Mother and Patty and I sing in the choir; and we always spend Friday nights at Ken’s before heading to a Tiger football game; then on Saturday we are in the stands supporting the Gators.”

Over the course of its lifetime, the river home has flooded a total of three times, with the last time being in the summer of 1998. Regardless of the occasional storm, the river home has been enjoyed and cherished by many generations over the years, seeing the growth of the family through the decades. Memories definitely abound in this house! From enjoying the natural beauty by floating down the river to enjoying fresh boiled peanuts on the dock, the families represented find this place to be a refreshing, relaxing location to gather for every holiday weekend or summer getaway. Aside from playing a friendly game of Phase 10 and kayaking down the water, the family also loves to grab their fishing poles and fish off the dock in the afternoons. “It’s just good family time, and it’s relaxing,” Gigi Register says. “We know a lot of the neighbors because they’ve also owned property here for years; so, it’s just always fun to be here together.”

A friendly game of Phase 10 ensues.

Weekly Specials: Monday: Fried & Boiled Shrimp Tuesday: Tasty Ribs

“The Holy Spirit gave me these recipes. At an early age, just 6 years old, I was pulling up a stool to our stove and cooking. I love cooking!” Laquasha says. In operation since 2016, Kountry Korner is receiving rave reviews and serves all kinds of gatherings and occasions, with broadranging customers, locals, out-of-towners and tourists. Offering food choices for dining in, take-out, and catering, Laquasha explains why this corner eatery has become a popular hot spot for patrons. She cares about people, has a loving and giving heart, and is invested wholeheartedly in presenting the best home-style dining atmosphere.” Customers give high marks to an array of food selections and specialty items as their crowd-pleasers: that famous fried

2014 Columbia County Information Guide | 21

By Isaac Myers

This past spring break, Kelly Thomas, a teacher at Lake City Middle School, took a group of chaperones and students across the Atlantic to Ireland, Wales, and England for an exciting and educational trip. The trip was arranged by EF Educational Tours, Inc., an agency that puts together excursions to destinations all over the world, many of which are for students. When Janna Dockery, mother of Elijah Dockery, heard about the trip, she knew she had to make it happen. “I call dibs on this one,” she told her husband. When her mom Frankie found out about the trip, Frankie said, “You are not flying across the ocean with my grandson without me!” Janna jokingly replied, “Well, I guess you’ll have to buy a ticket then.” So that’s exactly what Frankie did.

Elijah Dockery

Elijah Dockery experienced the trip of a lifetime over his spring break, spending the week traveling Europe with his mother, Janna, and grandmother, Frankie. The trio had a blast exploring all that Europe has to offer!

32 |

FamilyMagazine

A seventh grader at Lake City Middle School, Elijah has had an affinity for travel from a young age. Though Japan is at the top of his list, he has a lot of different destinations to which he would like to travel. For Elijah, this opportunity was a dream come true, and a perfect way to kick-start his international travels. The spring break trip did not go off without its hitches—they almost missed their flight from New York to Shannon, Ireland! “Our flight from Orlando was delayed, and for a while we weren’t even sure we’d make it that night at all! We ended up getting into New York so late that we would’ve missed the flight, but there were so many of us that they held the plane,” Janna explains. The trip ended up being a huge success—everyone had a blast and learned so much! The weather was typical for the season, mostly chilly and rainy except for one day, which happened to be the day they had a jaunting horse carriage ride.

DAY 1 Shannon & Killarney

The crew landed in Shannon early in the morning and hit the ground running to their first destination of Bunratty Castle, a fifteenth century tower house. They were able to explore the castle and its grounds, and also have breakfast on site. Next, they headed to Adare, a beautiful little village situated near the city of Limerick. Adare is renowned as one of the prettiest towns in Ireland, and is known for its colorful buildings, beautiful gardens, and stunning ancient structures. After, they continued on to the town of Killarney, where they went on a jaunting horse carriage ride in Killarney National Park. They then traveled to their hotel in Cork for an early dinner and turn-in, ending an exhausting but exciting two days of non-stop travel and sightseeing.

DAY 2 Ring of Kerry—St. Patrick’s Day! The morning of day two, which happened to be St. Patrick’s Day, the group awoke to a beautiful surprise—a colorful rainbow!

After breakfast, they headed to the Ring of Kerry. This long road weaving along the coast and into the mainland is a tourist favorite with many photo opportunities, including stunning cliffs, lots of castles, and even a quick detour to a sheep farm. The Ring of Kerry was Janna’s favorite part of the trip. “It was about a hundred or so miles,” she says, “and the scenery was just amazing. It was like nothing I’ve ever seen here in the United States.” “And the road was so curvy!” Elijah adds. They even got to see some snow on the top of the mountains, which their guide mentioned was an extremely rare sight for that time of year.

DAY 3 Blarney, Cashel, & Dublin The morning of day three took the group to Blarney Castle, and then to Rock of Cashel. After eating lunch and taking some photos, they headed on to Dublin.

The first stop in Dublin was to see Book of Kells, a ninth century manuscript documenting the life of Jesus, which was on display at Trinity College Dublin. Dinner took place at The Graduate, a restaurant in Killiney Shopping Centre, where they were treated to a traditional Irish stew with potatoes and vegetables. Before heading back to the hotel, the group had the opportunity to attend a live music show at Taylors Three Rock Hotel.

DAY 4 Dublin

The morning of day four was spent sight-seeing around Dublin via a hop-on-hop-off bus, and their stops included St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Phoenix Park. At lunchtime, the group attended an Irish dance party, where they learned about Irish music and dance. This day was especially interesting for Elijah because part of the trip included a for-credit opportunity: the students would submit a question before the trip that they wanted to research and have answered while on the trip, and then when they got home, they would complete a project based on what they found in exchange for half of a Humanities credit for high school. Elijah’s question was: “How does traditional Irish music and dance affect the modern Irish culture?” So, this experience tied in very well with his project.

SUMMER 2019 | 33

For the rest of the day, everyone was given free time in Dublin. Elijah, Janna, and Frankie decided to go to the National Museum, where they saw the bog bodies, and the National Gallery, where they saw some Picasso paintings. They also tracked down the statue of Molly Malone in downtown Dublin.

DAY 6 Stratford-upon-Avon & London The first stop of day six was Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval English village and the home of William Shakespeare. They visited his birthplace, as well as the cottage of his wife Anne Hathaway, and then ate lunch in the town.

After lunch, the group headed to London where they ate dinner at a restaurant called Busuba Westfield. They then ended their day with a Jack the Ripper walking tour, which began in a graveyard.

DAY 7 London

DAY 5 Wales

The group arose extra early on day five for their ferry ride from Dublin to Wales. The ferry took about four hours, and it was nothing like Elijah had expected. “It was huge—the thing was ten stories tall! It had a movie theater, arcade, coffee bar, and even a pastry shop,” he says. Lunch was eaten in the town of Beaumaris, where they got to try the United Kingdom’s iconic fish and chips for the first time. It wasn’t Elijah’s favorite, as he says, “I just don’t really like cod all that much. The chips were good though!” The rest of the day was spent driving along the beautiful scenic roads of North Wales, before heading to the hotel in Birmingham for dinner.

FamilyMagazine

The last full day of the trip was spent all over London. The group went together to Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard, had a guided tour of the city until lunch, then had free time in London afterwards. Elijah, Janna, and Frankie took their free time and packed in as much as they could. They rode the iconic London Eye, visited the British Museum and saw the Rosetta Stone, and went to Borough Market. They ended their day seeing Wicked on the West End, which was a highlight of the entire trip for Elijah, who is a big theater fan. Whether you are interested in an educational tour or just an adventure abroad, a trip to Europe is a trip you will not soon forget. Janna and Elijah Dockery encourage everyone to seize once in a lifetime opportunities when they present themselves, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Elijah says he can’t wait to go abroad again and is already looking forward to next year’s trip to Greece. This trip will also be led by Kelly Thomas, and other middle school students interested in going are welcome to contact her via email: thomask@columbiak12.com.

Honoring History through Renovation By Emily Pazel Ray Carpenter Photography

They say when a building is designed correctly, it can tell a story, which is exactly what Teresa Morgan, founder and principal attorney of the Morgan Law Center, set out to preserve when she recently renovated her law office. 36 |

FamilyMagazine

Once inside, you can still see the skeleton of the original design. The high, arched ceilings have skylights that flood the interior with natural lighting. The front of the structure is separated into two main sections, which at one time was the patient lobby that separated sick children from the well children. Other smaller rooms, once used as patient examining rooms, line the perimeter of the interior.

Attorneys Teresa Morgan and Roberta Getzen in the lobby of the 1960s retro-themed office.

The History Behind the Design “I remember thinking that I didn’t want to make it look like a regular doctor’s office because, especially for children, going to the doctor’s can be scary,” says Harry Bates, the original architect who worked on the project. “I wanted the design to be light and bright, with as much open space as possible.”

“I moved into this building in 1997; so, it’s been 22 years that we have been here,” Teresa says. “I decided right from the beginning that I was going to specialize in estate planning and elder law, and I loved being in this building.” If you were born and raised in Lake City before the 1990s, there is a good chance you have already visited Teresa’s office. The structure was originally built in the 1970s for Dr. Charles Ozaki, who was Lake City’s first doctor to ever specialize in pediatrics.

Harry was born in 1927 in Lake City, where he graduated from Columbia High School and went on to receive his bachelor’s in architecture from North Carolina State University School of Design. After moving to New York City in 1955, he worked at a well-known architecture firm where he worked on several iconic designs, such as the Pepsi Cola building and the Chase Manhattan Bank building. Harry later went into private practice and became known for designing beautiful, modernist houses on Fire Island, off the coast of New York. Partnering with Paul Masi to create Bates Masi Architects, he helped establish the firm now located in East Hampton, New York. After working there for several years, Harry retired in 2017 and now lives in Fernandina Beach. “Ozaki didn’t want a big structure; so, our goal was to maximize all the space in that building,” Harry says. “I remember that the building had two roads on each side; so, I wanted to make it accessible from either side.” Harry remembers the Ozaki family being a very prominent family in Lake City, and that he grew up close to them.

SUMMER 2019 | 37

“He is a really, really nice man,” Harry says, referring to Dr. Ozaki. As memory recalls, Dr. Ozaki’s practice started out in an old Victorian house that sat inches away from where the current building now stands, according to his daughter, Lassie Patterson. The goal was to build the new, current structure while still being able to tend to his patients in the old house. Once the new one was finished, the old Victorian house was torn down. “It was a rare treat for Mr. Bates to take on the project,” Lassie says. “He took on the project, really, from the kindness of his heart. We had a personal relationship with his family.” Lassie explains the Bates family owned the first residential home on Lake DeSoto where the Florida Gateway Foundation is now housed. After Harry’s parents retired, they moved next door, and the Ozaki family moved in. Lassie says her grandparents immigrated to the United States from Japan; so, the original design of the pediatrician office was going to incorporate Japanese architecture. However, for budget and logistical reasons, those plans never came to fruition. “Once it was built, it was this beautiful, clean, modern aesthetic structure that stood out in Lake City,” Lassie says. “Mr. Bates made sure that it was not only beautiful; it functioned properly. For example, if the power went out, you could still see into the examining rooms with all the natural lighting.”

Educational workshop room < The newly renovated Morgan Law Center offices are decorated in a cute and friendly 1960s retro theme. Teresa has a love of Maine Coon cats. This is Daphne, Teresa’s fur-baby. A bit of information: The Maine Coon is the largest domesticated cat breed and extremely sociable; hence the nickname, “the gentle giant.” >

Dr. Ozaki and his late wife, Nettie, helped greatly with the functionality of the design; although, Lassie says, it was mostly Nettie who handled the design while her father tended to his patients. She also says Russel North was the main contractor who helped with the construction of the project. She remembers he was a licensed contractor in both commercial and residential, which, for the time, was a pretty rare occurrence. At the age of 93, Dr. Ozaki now lives in a retirement community in Gainesville. From time to time, his former patients run into him and recognize him from years ago. 38 |

< Teresa chose a 1960s retro theme for the expansion because she wanted baby boomers to enjoy the memories this decor conjures. “We are an estate planning and elder law firm, and this is the generation of clients we are serving most,” says Teresa.

Large conference room with table designed and constructed by Teresa’s husband, Dan.

Small conference room

“Our whole family loved living in Lake City,” she says. “We still have a family farm that we try to visit every year. It’s great to know they are revitalizing the area around Lake DeSoto and that it’s still sort of a hub for the community.”

The Story Behind the Renovation and Expansion As Teresa’s law firm began to grow, she was faced with two options: move to a new building or expand her current space. “I have always loved this building and its location,” Teresa says. “We enjoy being close to our downtown courthouse square, and our proximity to Lake DeSoto is also a great benefit.” In 2008, Teresa purchased the parking lot next to her office from First Baptist Church. She bought the lot thinking one day she might need the land to expand. “That was a very good decision because this business has flourished, and our building was filled past capacity,” she says. “In fact, I had no office space for our newest attorney, Roberta Getzan, so I had to rent space from Joy Lizotte, who owns a CPA office next door.”

Sharing in her vision of the expansion, David Simque and his construction team took on the project with ease and conquered the hurdles she was facing. The renovation added an additional 1,500 square feet of office space—almost doubling it in size. The new addition includes a large lobby and reception area, a client bathroom, two conference rooms, a large kitchen area, and an educational workshop room. “Of utmost importance to me is preserving the minimalist beauty and integrity of the original structure,” Teresa says. “I wanted the addition to enhance the look of the building; I didn’t want it to look like an afterthought.” The project was finished in May, and Teresa and her team could not be more excited with the end result. Teresa’s team will be able to continue to make use of all the unique characteristics of their office for many years to come.

At an early age, Dr. Tommy Randolph had a fascination with how the human body’s systems work, specifically how biological systems carry out specific functions. Similarly, Dr. Athena Randolph developed a passion for medicine with the desire to work with children. Starting from humble beginnings, their passions have materialized into two successful medical careers. Dr. Athena has been working as a pediatrician for 30 years now, and Dr. Tommy has been working as a family physician for 33 years. 40 |

Admitting Lake City was not part of their original plan to stay and build their medical practices, both have grown and thrived as physicians and community leaders. Dr. Tommy, originally from Live Oak, and Dr. Athena, hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attribute their success to a Christcentered faith and strong family ties where communal efforts of grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, neighbors, and friends ingrained and set forth examples of hard work from the least to the greatest tasks. Initially meeting as students at Dartmouth College, an Ivy League School in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dr. Tommy admits, “There were two factors that influenced my course in life: I’ve always had a fascination with the make-up of the human body—its purpose and function—and being motivated by family members who encouraged me. A particular aunt provided lots of support. I recall inspiring coaches—one even suggested that I become a dentist.”

Growing up with an unbounded mindset, Dr. Athena explains how her mother, even in weakened health and in a wheelchair, remained an inspiration by attending a graduation program and was a pillar of strength for their family members with her words and presence. Aaron Jenkins, a math instructor Dr. Athena Randolph at Columbia High School and acquaintance with the Randolphs’ sons reveals, “I admire how Dr. Tommy and Athena Randolph carry themselves: poised, regal, expressive and, yet, down to earth. Over the years, I observed how they supported their children in all kinds of academic and sporting activities.”

“Being involved in after-school activities with our children has allowed us to support humanitarian efforts over the years.” —Tommy Randolph, M.D.

Bernice Presley, founder of the National Achievers Society in Lake City, says, “Dr. Athena has continuously volunteered her time, devoting long hours and resources while graciously assisting students’ needs.” One of the initiatives the Randolphs are responsible for is the first STEM program at Florida Gateway College. STEM is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Randolphs have also availed themselves to causes and been benefactors to organizations such as the Boys Club, youth sports, and various school and health fairs. Being communityminded, Dr. Tommy notes, “Being involved in afterschool activities with our children has allowed us to support humanitarian efforts over the years.”

In the 4th grade, Avonia was the only student in Columbia County to score a 5 on her FSA Writing exam—a perfect score! When asked what her parents mean to her, Avonia responded, “They are best examples a daughter can have for pursuing the scientific field; they’re my rock.” Dr. Tommy Randolph

Discussing if there is a medical doctor in the family, the Randolphs replied of the possibility of Avonia, who has an interest in becoming a veterinarian. “That’s the closest we may get to medical doctor,” joked the Randolphs. Besides being well pleased with their children, they are equally proud grandparents to Cory and his wife’s daughters: Zaryn Randolph, 8, and Olivia Randolph, 4. Well-traveled, the couple enjoys visiting scenic national parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and those in Alaska. The Randolphs feel relaxed when spending leisure time gardening. Not surprisingly, Dr. Tommy warm-heartedly explains how his wife does an amazing job as an interior designer and gardener. Dr. Athena says, “I enjoy plants in general, especially roses, jasmines, and gardenias.” Dr. Tommy enjoys playing the piano in his free time. Last year, Dr. Tommy received the inaugural Leading by Example Community Award from his hometown contemporaries. This award exemplifies for the Randolphs that pursuing excellence each day does not go unnoticed.

KABOBS INGREDIENTS FOR THE TERIYAKI SAUCE MARINADE 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce 3 tablespoons brown sugar 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger Pinch of salt and black pepper 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon water

QUICK & EASY

• Prep Time: 20 minutes • Cook Time: 10 minutes • Total Time: 30 minutes Serves 8

FOR THE KABOBS 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in 1-inch cubes 1 pound smoked sausage, cut into 1-inch chunks (see notes) 1 1/2 cups fresh pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes 1 small red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch chunks 1 small green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/2 medium red onion, cut into 1-inch chunks DIRECTIONS Make the marinade: combine all ingredients in a small saucepan, bring it to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1-2 minutes, until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. (Also, reserve about 3 tablespoons for basting the kabobs and/or for dipping when served.) Place the chicken pieces in a large food storage bag, add the teriyaki marinade, (all but the reserved portion) and toss to coat the chicken pieces. Marinade chicken for at least 30 minutes (2 hours is best). Meanwhile, soak your skewers in a pan of water so they don’t burn on the grill. Preheat the grill. Assemble the kabobs: Thread the marinated chicken, peppers, pineapple, and sausage onto the soaked skewers. Grill the kabobs over medium heat for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through, the sausage is warmed, and the veggies are softened. Brush with reserved teriyaki sauce at the end of the grilling time or serve the sauce on the side for dipping. Recipe courtesy of familyfoodonthetable.com Photo courtesy of seasonedmom.com

The Sounds of Summer Karley Scott Collins

THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME WITH

KARLEY SCOTT COLLINS June Rose Photography

A Lake City native, this 19-year-old is full of talent, grace, and courage. With a voice as beautiful as she is, Karley Collins is embarking on the journey of a lifetime in the whirlwind of the American entertainment industry, ready to make her mark on this world. Karley has always had big dreams, starting with her journey in Hollywood as a teen and preteen, and now with her pursuit of music in Nashville and beyond. Karley embarked on her entertainment journey at just 6 years old in her small town. Her pediatrician at the time hosted

a theater program at PK Yonge School for the summer for kindergarten through high school students, encouraging his patients and friends to participate. After hearing the older kids in her group talk about their dreams of traveling to L.A. to audition for roles, Karley and her family made the trip and booked her first commercial within two weeks, followed by her first television role shortly after. When one of her roles required playing a guitar, she purchased a Martin guitar and began to take lessons.

“I took lessons from a hippie in the mountains of California, literally on a couch on a mountain underneath a big, beautiful tree,” Karley Collins recalls. “They ended up going with a seventeen-year-old for the role, but that was how this whole music journey got started.” Starting out with roles on thrillers like The Collector and the animated Open Season 3, as well as appearances on hit television shows like Once Upon a Time and Family Guy, Karley found a passion in performing, acting, and creating from a young age. While music is her primary focus, Karley has recently signed on to appear in The Collected, a sequel to The Collector. With her passion for music, Karley has participated in many collaborative writing groups in Nashville with peers who have experience writing for popular performers like Shawn Mendes. During these co-writing sessions, she sits with amazing musicians from all walks of life and begins to create magical melodies and lyrics that speak to her soul. She expresses how much she loves cowriting because it offers the opportunity to learn and grow while also teaching what she knows to other artists. “I feel like writing is inside me, like it’s what I’m meant to do,” she expresses. “When I write, I feel like I’m at home. When I’m in Nashville writing, and then I record a song, it just feels like I’m doing what I was created to do. It’s a good feeling.” Karley has always been a music lover, telling of her fascination with Stevie Nicks for her fiery, strong personality and creative,

artistic side. Along with the mystical Stevie Nicks, she also finds inspiration within Bob Dylan’s amazing lyricism and Tom Petty’s unique style. With a very diverse music taste, she tends to consider herself to be a country rock artist, a salute to her southern roots and her father’s love for rock and roll. “My dad raised me on rock and roll, so I like Alice in Chains and Guns N’ Roses. I think you’ll hear that when you hear my music—a little bit of the old classic rock and a little bit of country since my roots are here, then a little bit of the rock and roll. It’s just a mix of everything,” Karley says about her music. The Florida native holds many credits in the entertainment industry already, but 2019 is revealing that only the sky is the limit with this singer-songwriter. While many of her projects are still in the works, she has signed with Creative Arts Agency, a Los Angeles-based company that represents many prestigious talented individuals in the arts and sports world. She is currently in negotiations with a major recording label and will be publicly signing in July. Recording for television is also in the works in the near future. At the end of June, Karley opened up for Willie Nelson at a stop on his 2019 U.S. tour, an experience she expresses was absolutely unforgettable. It’s no secret this small-town girl is going places, and Nashville is just the beginning. To listen to Karley’s music, or to follow her exciting journey, follow her on Instagram @karleycollins. Stay tuned—big things are coming!

The Sounds of Summer Ridge Roman

BREAKING BARRIERS WITH

RIDGE ROMAN June Rose Photography

A songwriter and worship leader at Christ Central, Lake Butler, Ridge Roman Bringger has a fiery passion for creating beautiful music. At the age of four, Ridge picked up his first guitar and was introduced to the wonderful world of music. Over the years, he has fallen in love with writing songs and creating a unique sound, all while pursuing his faith and breaking down musical barriers and boxes. He has always had a diverse taste in music, beginning with his exploration of records he purchased secondhand from garage sales.

50 |

FamilyMagazine

“Growing up, I would ride my bike to yard sales around town to find records I liked. I didn’t know anything about vinyl; I just picked them based on the covers I liked,” Ridge explains. “Well it turns out, I had pretty good taste. I grew up listening to Run DMC, Aerosmith, Quiet Riot, The Police, U2, and a lot of blues.” While at first Ridge only learned how to play the guitar, he later realized his talent for singing and began to hone his vocal skills. It was not until he was 17 years old when he decided to start playing and singing for others, and in 2014, he began to play in the Christ Central Youth Band. “I knew from that first time I led worship that this is what I wanted to do,” Ridge expresses. “I’d do anything to fund it, but I don’t want to make money doing anything else.” With a unique, alternative and folksy sound, he strives to create meaningful music with lyrics that mirror real-life stories. His songwriting inspiration comes from his faith, like the beautiful parables in the Bible, as well as from his experiences and feelings. “The goal is to lead people into worship and create a moment. When I write, I want to describe a memory as accurately as possible, being as blunt as possible, all while still being poetic and metaphorical,”

Ridge shares. “I like the Bible because it does that. There’s a lot of beautiful imagery in there. I’m mostly trying to create a moment that happened and translate it into music as smoothly as possible.” With big dreams and a clear vision, Ridge is prepared to pour his all into his craft. From recording songs with local talent to working towards branding goals with Jorge Delgado, his love for creating something great can be witnessed by all. “Music is something I feel so called to, I’m just following God and trusting His promises,” Ridge says. “I would feel so convicted if I wasn’t pursuing this. It would be much easier to do something else— something less risky—but this is where I feel God is leading me.” To keep up with Ridge and learn more about his music, like his Facebook page and check out his Instagram @ridgeromanmusic.

The Sounds of Summer Hallie Davis

PURSUING YOUR PASSION WITH

HALLIE DAVIS K White Photography

A Jasper native, Hallie Davis is a 22-year-old singer and songwriter based out of Jacksonville. This girl has a fiery passion for sharing her craft with the world, describing her style as a mix of pop, funk, and soul with a bit of southern sensibility intertwined. With a heart for songwriting and a passion for performing, Hallie began her journey with music at just 16 years old when she entered the Hamilton County High School pageant, thanks to two staff members who encouraged her to overcome her fear of singing in front of others.

54 |

FamilyMagazine

“For my talent, I performed ‘At Last’ by Etta James a cappella,” Hallie recalls. “I remember the whole crowd going crazy because they couldn’t believe that shy little me could actually sing!” At the age of 19, Hallie entered her first singing competition: Lake City’s Southside Idol. After performing on stage with a live band, she fell head over heels in love with performing, making the decision to give her music career all she’s got. She dove right in after this experience, taking voice lessons in Jacksonville with Chrys Rowe of Music Rowe Studios and learning to play guitar with teacher and producer Eric Charlton. Currently, Hallie resides in Jacksonville, performing and writing music full time. She performs at many venues in the area, like Marion Street Bistro and Brewhouse and the Suwannee River Jam. She also performs live shows at the Jacksonville Landing and Murray Hill Theatre. She has been featured on First Coast Living’s segment “Pursue Your Passion.” Crediting her love for music to her dad, Hallie expresses the impact artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvis Staples, Ottis Redding, and Sam Cooke has on her music. With a heart for encouraging others to live their dreams, she made the decision to embrace her dream of creating music and has big plans for the future.

“I’ve always wanted to help people and encourage them to pursue their dreams, and the best way for me to do that is to go after my own dreams first,” Hallie explains. “I think my biggest inspiration with songwriting is just writing what I feel people need to hear, especially girls my age. I always want to tell the truth and help people through what I sing about. The biggest thing is that I want people to be able to relate to my songs and feel like they are not alone.” Hallie is thrilled to announce her first EP will be released later this year! To keep up with this small-town girl’s big journey with music, be sure to follow her on Instagram and Facebook at @HallieDavisMusic and check out her YouTube videos at “Hallie Davis Music.”

IMPACTFUL MUSIC WITH

The Sounds of Summer

WALLY GERMANY

Wally Germany

Photos submitted

A friend to many and a performer to the masses, Wally Germany is a local musician who connects with others through his music. Wally is a father, grandfather, and talented performer, possessing a way of creating a memorable moment through song and encouraging laughter and fun through his talent. Wally has experienced so much through his decades of entertaining, and his journey can be described as absolutely incredible.

58 |

FamilyMagazine

Wally Germany’s first experience with music began when he was a preteen, having bought his first guitar from money he made through a paper route. Picking up his first guitar at age 11, Wally spent his summer listening to his favorite records and learning to play by ear. He had some experience reading music from his time playing the trumpet, but the majority of his abilities were learned by listening and playing back tunes. By the fall of that year, he joined a band called The Symbols, a local band made up of upperclassmen high schoolers and a college guy—and Wally was only in the seventh grade at the time. Wally recalls the fun times he had playing in the band, along with the unforgettable experiences and lessons learned. About a year later, Wally began playing in a band with his fellow classmates and good friends David Jordan, Bobby Houston, and DeWitt Cason. They played together for a few years before joining a country band in high school, which led to performing all over Florida, everything from television shows to the Tampa State Fair. The country band even opened up for Loretta Lynn! “It was a great learning experience. I was 15 and 16 at the time, so I was just getting my drivers license so I could drive myself to those shows,” Wally laughs. Following his stint in the country band, Wally toured with the D Brothers for three years, traveling from Florida and Georgia all the way to Kentucky and Ohio, then back again. In his senior year of high school, Wally set off on a solo trip to Nashville on a Greyhound bus with dreams of making it in the entertainment industry in the famous Tennessee music hot spot. “That was an awakening,” Wally says. “You could walk up to publishing companies, you know; some would listen to your songs,

and then others wouldn’t. I got a contract during my first trip up there.” While Wally decided not to relocate to Nashville full time, he did find opportunities to perform and share his music in the city. Playing up and down the lively streets of Broadway and connecting with fellow musicians, he found a love for Nashville and an even deeper passion for music. Currently, Wally enjoys playing for crowds at local establishments like Marion Street Bistro and Brewhouse and Halpatter Brewing Company with his group “Wally Germany and Friends,” as well as at a variety of special events and celebrations. With his daughters living in North Carolina, Wally also performs at various venues there, as well as a plethora of beach towns across the state of Florida. He also plays with a local group called The Jades, a group of men Wally has always looked up to, watching them rehearse in their garages from time to time over the years. “They were my local influence; I would go listen to them play out at the VFW. They were a great influence, and now I get to work with them,” Wally says. “We get to do some nostalgic type stuff, performing at class reunions and such.” With influences like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Glen Campbell growing up, Wally likes to mix his nostalgic taste with a bit of Kenny Chesney’s style and bluegrass infusions. Throughout his career, he has expressed the importance of connection and how much he values those connections, whether with listeners or fellow performers. His musician friends share a special bond with him, and he hopes to touch others through his music. “I got to work with these incredible guys and sometimes perform with them; so, those experiences rank pretty high for me. I never got to be on a lot of big stages, but I gained a lot of friends, dear friends... People my music has connected with,” Wally expresses. “That means so much that they come and see us play. If my music touches someone and they come back to see me, and it becomes a relationship, that’s what means the most to me.”

Jiah R All things are possible

Singer, songwriter, teacher, husband, father, son, believer, dreamer—these are just a few words that describe Live Oak native Jeremiah Ross. Recently signing a record deal with Dark Child Records, a Los Angeles-based recording company, Jeremiah’s music career is shifting in new and exciting ways. With the goal of singing on a worldwide stage, Jeremiah continues to pursue his dreams and work hard to achieve them. By Jeweliana Register Tammy Johns Photography

SUMMER 2019 | 61

Jeremiah Ross’ music journey began when he was just 5 years old after his father, Alfonso Ross Sr., preacher at Spirit and Truth Church of Live Oak, picked him up from school and Jeremiah proclaimed he felt he could play the keyboard. Upon hearing this, Alfonso Ross Sr. took his son to the church where Jeremiah proceeded to play the piano with no prior training… And the rest is history!

“If you’re steady at what you do, the Lord will open that door for you. Just be consistent and take your time; it’s going to happen.” “I’ve been playing ever since. To this day, I still don’t know how to read music, but I play drums, keyboard, and guitar,” Jeremiah explains. “I just groomed my gift, and my dad really helped me to develop that gift. He gave me the mindset that anything that I wanted to do, I could do it.” Jeremiah went on to explain a day when he was practicing keyboard in his room and his father requested that he sing and play at the same time, to which Jeremiah responded with “I can’t do it.” His dad immediately said, “I don’t ever want you to use the word can’t.”

Bunch. He recalls how much fun the trio has when they can sing and just enjoy being together… Plus, his older trio of siblings had a group growing up, so Jeremiah and his two fellow group members like to joke around about their talents. “We always make fun of our older group of siblings because they used to have a group back in the day. We always say that our group would kill their group in a sing-off!” Jeremiah jokes. All jokes aside, the main goal of Jeremiah’s is to embrace every little moment and inspire others along the way. A Melody Christian Academy graduate, Jeremiah now teaches music at his alma mater and has led their choirs to a victorious firstplace award twice in singing competitions with over 2,000 competitors. Jeremiah has a true heart for his community, investing in the generations to come and faithfully performing at annual local events, like the Olustee Festival and Christmas on the Square. “No matter how my career goes, those are the moments that matter the most to me. I’ve always wanted to show young people that you don’t have to leave to become something. So many people believe that if you want to be successful, you have to go to New York or L.A., but you can go to L.O. (Live Oak) or L.C. (Lake City) and be just as impactful from your hometown,” Jeremiah proclaims. “If you’re steady at what you do, the Lord will open that door for you. Just be consistent and take your time; it’s going to happen.”

“From that day forward, the word can’t is not even in my vocabulary. I attack everything with the mindset that I could, and my motto that I live by is that all things are possible with the help of the Lord,” Jeremiah says. “That’s in my school yearbook, and I tell everyone about it. I feel fearless in everything I do and set out to do.” Growing up in a family with six children, Jeremiah expresses how special the bond is he has with two of his siblings, Sheconiah and Zedekiah, describing his family as a bit of a Brady

Jeremiah Ross with wife Alexis, oldest daughter Jayden-Aleigh, and youngest daughter Trinity.

Jeremiah Ross is not only a talented musician and performer, but also a devoted husband and father. Jeremiah and his wife, Alexis, met when he was just 16 years old when he was traveling with his father to minister at Alexis’ church in Tallahassee. At the time, Jeremiah had just released his first Christian album and was selling them to the congregation after service. After finding a few excuses to talk to Jeremiah, Alexis purchased her copy, and for the next few months, proudly proclaimed around her father that Jeremiah was her husband.

A few years went by before the pair connected on social media and began to talk again. After beginning to work in ministry together, the two married at age 20 and 18, and have now been together for almost 10 years. They have two children together: their sweet Jayden-Aleigh, 3, and their precious Trinity, 1. “We’re now two kids later, and we love each other more than ever,” Jeremiah expresses. “We got blessed with two amazing girls; they are the loves of my life.” With so many amazing experiences already under his belt and many exciting opportunities ahead of him, Jeremiah Ross is an inspiration to many. He seeks to spread truth through Christ in his music, finding inspiration in anything and everything around him. With influences from those such as soul music trailblazer Sam Cooke, Jeremiah continues to make strides towards impacting the masses. Jeremiah Ross with mother Gloria, brother Zedekiah, sister Sheconiah, and “Everything that comes along with the truth is not always safe. I know my objective, my goal, and my mission. I believe God put me here to speak the truth and deal with broken celebrities and things of that nature. Just the average everyday listener should be able to pull truth, hearing and inspiration from my music,” Jeremiah says. “I believe music is one of the highest forms of communication today. It’s very important to me that we articulate it the right way.”

“I always knew I had strength in me, but when I walked on that stage for the first time, it was like my exterior met my interior. That feeling was unlike anything I’d ever experienced,” Goldi shares. “If I can do this, anyone can do it. My goal is to be able to inspire everyone that I meet in some way, shape, or form to love themselves and take care of their bodies.” So, how did NutraLean become the brand it is today? Goldi founded her nutrition services when she was working three other jobs: two waitressing gigs and as a personal trainer at a local gym. The business started from the recommendation of a friend who encouraged her to share her talent of cooking and her love for nutrition with others in an effort to help them on their health journey. From creating the menu in her personal kitchen to completely renovating her brick-and-mortar location, Goldi poured herself into NutraLean, believing in the power it held.

Goldi attributes much of her success to her father’s wise words about character and perseverance, as well as his example of pursuing his passion, which was art. After her father passed away unexpectedly in an accident in 2017, Goldi made it her mission to honor his legacy and pursue her NutraLean dream wholeheartedly.

“Fitness and faith go hand in hand. You are not promised any specific result, but you are promised that there will be a result in the end,” Goldi says. “With fitness, you have to trust the process and apply it every single day. It’s the same thing with your walk with God.”

“My dad always told me that there were two things that make up your character, and that’s your work ethic and your word. That’s what people base your worth off of,” Goldi explains. “I had the utmost respect for my father; so, I said, "well, hey, listen, I’m going to do everything I can to make NutraLean something.”

Today, NutraLean serves the Columbia County and surrounding areas, providing healthy meals and sweet treats—without the guilt—in a convenient way. The storefront provides a full menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, with food prepared by hand each morning. The restaurant is locally owned and operated, ensuring that every ingredient is fresh and good for you; so, there’s no more questioning what’s in the food you’re eating.

Another large part of Goldi’s journey has been her faith. Growing up, Goldi expresses, she always had something inside of her that guided her choices and offered strength in difficult situations. Goldi now recognizes that as God’s strength, courage, wisdom and grace; and the NutraLean founder relates faith to a fitness journey.

“We have full control over our energy levels and how we feel; we just have to take the time and make the choice. Once you feel good about what’s inside, everything else falls into place,” Goldi expresses. “That’s why I do this—to help people love who they are. I know how it feels to be completely alone and feel worthless, but nutrition and bodybuilding have truly changed my life.”

“Learn to swim, learn to float, and always wear your life jacket on the boat.” —Twiggy By Jeweliana Register

A phenomenon that is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Twiggy the Water-Skiing Squirrel began as a joke from infamous prankster Chuck Best Sr. in 1978. Chuck Sr. was nursing a squirrel back to health after its fall from a tree during a storm when he decided to keep the injured squirrel as a family pet. Fast forward a few weeks to his daughter’s birthday when he gifted her an RC boat and the crew decided to test drive the new toy. As he celebrated his girl’s birthday and test drove the boat at the lake, his friend came over to poke fun at him, insinuating that he really bought the boat to play with for himself, not just for his daughter. Jokingly, Chuck Sr. responded with a confident “No, I bought it so I could teach my pet squirrel how to water ski.” His friend then challenged the statement, and Chuck Sr., being the jokester he was, committed to making it a reality. As the story goes… the rest is history!

Left: Over the years, the team has featured multiple Twiggys and is currently working with Twiggy IX (also referred to as Hollywood!) and Twiggy X (also known as Twiglet). At the time, the family owned a skating rink in Sanford, and during a local newspaper coverage interview for the rink, the water-skiing squirrel was mentioned during the interview and then featured in the paper. Twiggy’s story was then aired by Real People, ABC, and many other national media outlets. Within a few months, ABC’s story won an Emmy, Twiggy went viral, and Chuck Sr. and his wife, LouAnn Best, received calls requesting Twiggy shows around the country. From there, the adorable water-skiing squirrel began the journey of a lifetime, and the Best family began their work as licensed USDA rehabilitators, taking in over 20 squirrels each year, rehabilitating and then releasing them. Over the years, Twiggy’s résumé has added a plethora of amazing experiences, like having the opportunity to gueststar in Brad Paisley’s “River Bank” music video and appear in the hit movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Aside from the Hollywood glam Twiggy has experienced over the years, her biggest accomplishment is likely her partnership with the National Safe Boating Council to promote their “Wear It” campaign, a story that is close to Twiggy and the Twiggy Team’s heart. Chuck Best Jr., current owner and CEO at Twiggy’s Inc., shares the sentimental meaning behind the life jacket partnership. “In 1997, my dad, Chuck Best Sr. (founder of Twiggy’s Inc.), passed away in a boating accident. That day, he saved my grandfather’s life but lost his own life,” Chuck Best Jr. shares. Following the tragic accident, LouAnn decided to retire the squirrels and set them all free. The family was dealing with their loss and was unsure if they wanted to continue Twiggy’s story, but even after the accident, she kept receiving calls requesting Twiggy performances all over. One day, she sat in her kitchen and began to pray for the answer. As she looked

TWIGGY’S SUPPORT OF THE “WEAR IT” CAMPAIGN Twiggy loves to have fun on the water, but she also recognizes the importance of water safety. Before hopping on the skis and jetting off, Twiggy straps into her life vest and remembers the message of boating safety from her friends at the National Safe Boating Council. If you are on a boat, you need a life jacket! Committed to educating the public about safe water practices, the National Safe Boating Council proudly teamed up with Twiggy to promote their “Wear It” campaign this year. With the organization’s focus on education, training, and outreach, the message to always wear your life jacket when boating can truly save lives. For more information about safety regulations, or to learn about the “Wear It” campaign, visit safeboatingcouncil.org. up from her prayer, she noticed a squirrel standing at her sliding glass door. She walked over and opened the door, and the squirrel ran inside, jolting her to the realization that this was one of her squirrels that was previously released. With confidence, she trained the squirrel to water ski, and, within two weeks, was back in the circuit—an amazing feat, as it typically takes six months to a year to train a squirrel to water ski. During this tour, she placed a life jacket on Twiggy in her husband’s memory to promote water safety to all. Through the years, she continued her husband’s legacy by training Twiggys and performing across the country. When it came time to officially retire, son Chuck Jr. took over the business and aimed big, creating a brand for Twiggy and partnering with the National Safe Boating Council. With dreams to take Twiggy worldwide, he and his team continue to carry on his father’s legacy, one show at a time. “Water safety is a really big aspect of what Twiggy’s message is all about. It was one of our first dreams to work with the council—it was both mine and my mom’s dream,” Chuck Jr. expresses. “We want to be able to use Twiggy as a spokesperson and celebrity for water safety, and we have big dreams for the future.”

There’s nothing more thrilling than performing in front of a crowd, pouring your heart and soul into your movements and speech. Students compete in many different categories in the Special Olympics.

“This really gives them such purpose… There’s something about being a performer and being on stage that really helps your self-esteem and confidence—it just does so much for you,” Crystal expresses. “It’s so awesome seeing the joy on their faces when they are performing and seeing their progress as their self-esteem is being built up.” In addition to their tap classes, the class enjoys spending their days with their primary instructor, Carol Douglass. A member of the LCCA family for over 8 years, Carol teaches her students in the traditional subjects like math, English and science, but also provides valuable social and life skills to her class. “I’ve been here since 2010, so they are family, and I like to call them my kids. They’re awesome kids,” Carol says. “I always tell them that you can do anything; you just may have to do it a little differently.”

Students at Lake City Christian Academy enjoy the animals that live on campus, including this camel!

Along with their life skills and dance skills, these students are given the unique opportunity to complete PATH certified, equestrian physical therapy with instructor Katherine King. Not only do the kids enjoy interacting and taking care of the horses on campus, but Katherine uses her time to teach the kids balance, strength, awareness and responsibility through the equestrian program.

It should be noted that the LCCA campus is also home to goats, cows, chickens, rabbits, a camel, and lots of other furry friends. Their 12-horse equestrian program is only the beginning! Despite the obstacles that may present themselves, these students have taken their disability and found so many abilities within it. The sky is the limit for these devoted students, and their journey on to the Special Olympics is just a small piece of the puzzle.

It is imperative to create a foundation for learning at a young age. This can be done by encouraging learning activities and partaking in them along with your child, and by enrolling your them in a quality early learning program. Regular attendance in an early learning program is one of the best decisions you can make to ensure the success of your child now and in the future, whether for college, career or life in general. The Early Learning of Florida's Gateway understands how difficult it can be to find and quality early learning program that meets each child's specific needs; so they are there to help all families within their reach. From providing resource information about quality early learning programs to help parents make the most of their child's education to assessment of their child's needs, the coalition strives to individualize care for families in our area.

"As children learn and grow, I get excited about their developmental accomplishments and know that they can become productive and successful learners throughout life; and too, make our community thrive."

THREE REASONS to Read with Your Child Regularly 1. Reading exercises your child’s brain 2. Reading enhances concentration. and increases creativity. It is common knowledge that reading can boost our brains, but what kind of effect does that have on children? Reading exposes children to new vocabulary, giving them a broader understanding of the words they need to know but may not hear in daily conversations. Reading also sparks curiosity, creativity and interest, making it the perfect tool for further exploration throughout their lifetime.

While it may seem difficult at first to sit your toddler down with a book, it does get easier! Encouraging your child to sit and listen or sit and read will lay a foundation for concentration, a skill needed all throughout life. Consistency is key with this—the more your child reads, the better his or her concentration will become.

3. Reading together creates a special bond. What’s better than spending quality time with your little guy or gal? Establishing a nightly routine of reading together before bed can create a special bond between a parent and a child. These are memories your child will remember for years to come, and, hopefully, one day pass on to their little one.

“The Early Learning Coalition of Florida’s Gateway, Inc. is committed to supporting parents and quality early learning programs that lead to children’s educational success.”

It’s no secret children are sponges, soaking in information from the experiences they have and the behaviors they witness. The developmental stages of children may not be totally concrete and can vary from child to child, but there are many ways parents can boost their child’s learning and encourage a healthy, bright future. For many, that means enrolling their children in a pre-kindergarten program that fosters exploration and development in their early years. While there are countless benefits to early learning, check out the top five benefits of these invaluable programs. u

THE TOP 5 BENEFITS O F E A R LY L E A R N I N G 1. Children are encouraged to socialize. While socialization with relatives is important to a child’s development, socialization with those outside of their circle is crucial. When children begin to socialize with their peers and are given the ability to create their own friendships, their confidence is boosted. Children who socialize at a younger age tend to overcome shyness and come out of their shells earlier than children who do not.

By the time a child turns age 5, 90 percent of his or her brain is developed and the foundation for social and emotional skills is set.

2. Children are taught the concept of cooperation. Another necessary development at this age is the ability to cooperate. Children who are raised as an only child or who do not regularly spend time with other kids their age may see a delay in this area, making early childhood learning essential to their cooperation skills. Simply sharing toys with others and learning how to follow directions at a young age can make a world of difference when your child enters kindergarten.

3. Children learn resilience. Children need a balance of stability and challenges in order to develop a resilience to carry them through life. It is said that early childhood professionals and a child’s parents must work together to create a safe space for children with understood consequences for behaviors in an effort to help children manage their actions and emotions. Children also need a few challenges, which provides them with the ability to overcome obstacles and cope with losing from time to time.

4. Children gain patience. It can be easy for a child to become impatient in various circumstances— admittedly, the same goes for adults! In order to teach children patience, it is necessary to place them in situations where they must learn to wait their turn. This is done through waiting in line to enjoy the slide during playground time or while waiting for their friend to finish using the crayon they want to use during art class. This skill is essential to life, and early learning programs intentionally incorporate this into their daily activities.

5. Children find a love for lifelong learning. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of early learning is the love for lifelong learning that is instilled in a child. When the seed of knowledge is planted at a young age, children are able to continue to grow in every area. Early learning programs strive to inspire a thirst for learning in children at a young age, encouraging them to keep asking questions and finding ways to solve problems for life.

ROBOTS

The local FRC 3556 GET SMART team was formed in 2010 by Columbia County educator Celena Crews in a very unexpected way. A former electrical power system engineer for the space station, Crews was approached by her principal at the time after the school’s science coach applied for a grant for physics equipment… But the school later found out that it was actually a grant to help launch a robotics team. After being awarded the grant, Crews recognized how needed the program was in our rural area and began to assemble a team of mentors to assist with her vision for the team. Knowing the importance of a great mentor, Celena pulled in many local business professionals like Travis Medeiros at Trademark Construction and her husband, Brett Crews, who works as a civil engineer. The robotics mentor program has grown dramatically since then, including mentors who teach technical skills like how to work with building equipment and software programming. “The fun thing is that most of our mentors have technical backgrounds. They’re engineers or they’re programmers, they’re building contractors, they have finance degrees or communication degrees... We all come together and learn new things to help these kids learn how to build these robots,” Celena says. “It ended up becoming something super cool that was so needed in our schools and our community.” THIS EDITORIAL BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

The program has poured into the lives of many students over the last decade, with alumni scattered across the map serving in different STEM capacities. One former student is currently working on satellites in California, and another works as an aerospace engineer on an Air Force base in the panhandle. Cameron Nichols, controls team captain and UCF-bound senior, expresses the impact the program has had on his life: “This program has really put me on the path for my career. When I first joined the team, I had some experience in programming, but I wanted to do some sort of engineering,” Cameron explains. “Learning the programming and electrical work behind the robot has helped me discover that I want to do computer science. It’s really helped put me on the path for my future education and future career.” While the program does have a focus on technical skills, like building the robot from the ground up, there are many other skills needed to complete their build each year. Students utilize design software to create the look of the robot, learn to program the machine, create branding materials, and gain an understanding of marketing and public relations for promotional purposes. With the help of community leaders who kindly offer their time, the students gain comprehensive experience that can apply to any career they choose.

Richardson Roundup: taking a walk down memory lane

Drawing of Richardson High School by class artist Warren Mattox, right.

By Ruth Williams

It’s time for the Richardson Roundup! This biannual event pays homage to the Richardson High School era gone by. Built in 1957 for African American students in Columbia County, and closing in 1970, Richardson left impressionable marks of rich tradition, pride, and lifelong bonds for students, teachers, and the community. Originating with the class of ’57 spearheading commemorations, alumni such as Ronald Mayhew, Willaveda ("Veda") Cooley, Stanley Lofton, Margarita James, and many more vanguards led and added to roundups over the years.

Lelia Lee Williams ('63), co-chairperson for the 2019 Alumni Roundup Planning Committee, says roundups are “giving opportunities to time we had at Richardson, where dreams still live in our hearts. As Martin Luther King, Jr.., said, ‘You can kill the dreamer, but you can’t kill the dream.’ Richardson High School is gone, but the dreamers are not.” Another proud alumna Romania Newman ('56), class president, has volunteered since 2006. She enjoys participating, fellowshipping, and witnessing the camaraderie all gatherings bring. During the three-day get-together, “people come from all around—from Florida, California, Maryland, Texas—you name it; they come, even from overseas,” says Herman Grant, alumnus and 2019 Alumni Roundup Planning Committee

co-chairperson. Richardson, now Richardson Community Center, is where most of the event’s activities take place. Convening on Richardson Community Center will be about 150 alumni. The itinerary of activities starts off with meet and greet registration on Friday, where participates pick up their packets; enjoy reconnecting, fellowshipping, meeting new friends; and partaking in a fish fry. Saturday starts off with a continental breakfast, which is a time for mingling, reminiscing, sharing updates and old stories, as well as playing bingo games. An activity could consist of sharing how a teacher or coach made the difference in someone’s life, like Coach Richard Anders, who is known throughout the community for being an exemplary teacher, phenomenal coach, and valued community leader. Saturday concludes with a banquet program. On Sunday, the roundup wraps up with an Alumni Worship Service. This memorable occasion is a mixture of excitement, recognitions, tributes, fellowships, and inspirational meetings, linking all participates to “take a walk down memory lane together.”

Whether she’s painting for a client or for herself, Kelli strives to make her work evoke a personal connection. “When I paint, I want there to be some sort of emotion attached to it, so that when you look at it, you can kind of feel what it’s like to be there right then,” she says. “If I paint a beach scene, I want you to be able to look at it and feel the wind and hear the waves.” When she encounters a peaceful setting or natural element that speaks to her, Kelli preserves it in a photograph to later recreate with vibrant acrylics. Though some images are easy for her to replicate, like most artists, Kelli doesn’t always Kelli creates imaginative murals for children's bedrooms and playrooms.

Kelli believes not all artwork is meant to hang on the wall— like these beautifully painted stools.

view her paintings as complete and will meticulously play with the subtle details in her work until she’s forced to part with it. “I’m pretty particular, so if it’s not the way that I want it, I will continue to pick at it and mess with it for a long time,” she says. Her meticulous practice has resulted in making it nearly impossible to find a spot in town where her work isn’t on display. Columbia County Bank, the United Way of Suwannee Valley, Grace Pediatrics, Magnolia Pediatrics, North Florida Pediatrics, and Marion Street Bistro and Brewhouse all have Kelli’s artwork displayed. Kelli’s work is also preserved on this year’s Olustee Festival t-shirts. These are just a handful of the local establishments and events that have requested Kelli’s talents over the years. When she isn’t wearing down her paint brushes,

Kelli uses her creative spirit in other ways. Decorating and repurposing furniture, making wreaths, and designing quilts are just a few of her ongoing projects. The Lake City native also enjoys spending time in her garden and enjoying the company of her husband of 28 years, Norbie; their four daughters, Justin, Aimee, Kelbie, and Kaylin; and two grandsons, Ledger and Abram.

Find Kelli's artwork all around town! Kelli's paintings and artwork are at the following locations: Castle Hill Academy, Hampton Inn, Vann Carpet One, Haven Hospice, Parkview Baptist Church, The Tavern, Marion Street Bistro and Brewhouse, Columbia County Bank, United Way, Grace Pediatrics, Magnolia Pediatrics, North Florida Pediatrics, Hot Spot Tanning, Nutrien (formerly PCS) of White Springs, Children’s Service Center of Gainesville, Summers Elementary, Five Points Elementary, Epiphany Catholic School, Pinemount Elementary, and Melrose Elementary. Sweet Summertime Cocktails and Appetizers By Isaac Myers

As Floridians, we love to spend the heat of summer in the water. From the pool, nearby lakes

and rivers, and the beach just over an hour away, there are plenty of options to cool off. But no pool party, river day, or beach trip is complete without some delicious food and drinks. So, whip up these super easy, refreshing, and tasty cocktails and appetizers as the perfect addition to your next summer shindig.

Caprese Skewers Makes 16 servings

P rosciutto-Wrapped Asparagus Makes 4-6 servings What you’ll need: • 1 pound of asparagus • 3 to 3 1/2 ounces sliced prosciutto • 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil • Ground black pepper • Lemon zest (optional) • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (optional) Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper and set aside. 2. Rinse asparagus, pat dry, and snap off the tough ends. Set asparagus aside. 3. Cut prosciutto slices in half lengthwise. Wrap each spear of asparagus with one strip of sliced prosciutto. (Tug the prosciutto a little as you wrap it around the asparagus to give it tension—this helps makes sure the prosciutto stays tight.) 4. Lay the wrapped asparagus spears on the lined sheet pan and drizzle with 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle a pinch of black pepper on top. 5. Bake the asparagus for 8 to 10 minutes. You will know it’s done when the asparagus is bright green and easily pierced with a fork, and the prosciutto is crispy around the edges. 6. Plate and serve! If you’d like, top with lemon zest and freshly grated Parmesan. Make sure to enjoy these hot!

What you’ll need: 1 cup balsamic vinegar 8 ounces mini mozzarella balls (if in water, drain and pat dry before adding to skewers) • 1 pint of grape or cherry tomatoes • Fresh basil leaves • Bamboo skewers

• •

Instructions: 1. Prepare your balsamic reduction by pouring 1 cup of balsamic vinegar into a small saucepan over medium low heat. 2. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vinegar has reduced to about half a cup, about 15 minutes. Allow reduction to cool and thicken while preparing skewers. 3. To prepare caprese skewers, spear through the top of one tomato (or tomato half if using smaller skewers) and slide it up 1 inch from the top of the skewer. 4. Take a small basil leaf, about 1 inch, and fold it in half. Spear the basil leaf and slide it up against the tomato. (If your basil leaves are large, cut them in half first; otherwise, the flavor will overwhelm the skewers.) 5. Next, spear a mozzarella ball and slide it up against the basil leaf. 6. Repeat with another tomato, basil leaf, and mozzarella ball, continuing until reaching the length of the skewer. 7. Drizzle skewers with balsamic reduction before serving and enjoy!

Stir in the simple syrup, tequila, lime slices, mint sprigs and 1/2 cup of water. 3. To serve, pour the watermelon agua fresca into ice-filled glasses, leaving 1 inch at the top. Feet on the Pedals, Head in the Clouds Biking the Suwannee Valley with Paul Pontzer By Hayli Zuccola

Noah Walker Photography

Biking among lush greenery and wildflowers, sharing the pathways with wandering critters, and cooling off sun-kissed skin with the occasional breeze allows cyclists like Paul Pontzer to experience the great outdoors while taking advantage of an enjoyable and scenic method of exercise. “I played sports throughout high school, and when I got out, I didn’t have any form of exercise other than running, which I find entirely boring; so, I chose trail riding. The excitement with that is you’re working very hard, but you don’t notice that you’re working hard because you’re trying to make the next turn or go over the next route. Your concentration is elsewhere, and that’s what I really like about that form of exercise—it keeps you from focusing on the exercise and puts your mind on the ride,” Paul says. Biking since he was in his 20s, Paul has pedaled his way through countless nature trails, but within the thickets and woodlands of North Florida, there are three routes in White Springs that the avid cyclist places among the list of his favorites. Spanning a 5-mile loop, White Springs’ Gar Pond trail is ideal for beginners and features a fast singletrack, scenic views of

Pit Pond, and marsh landscapes, as well as wildlife encounters with gopher tortoises, swallow tail kites, deer, and turkeys. Despite only being 4.5 miles in length, the Bridge to Bridge trail creates a more challenging ride through its use of sharp turns, climbs, and descents while maintaining captivating views throughout the ride. “Some people in the area call it the racetrack because you can ride it really fast and smoothly,” Paul says. Sharing its name with the Rolling Stones’ classic, the Beast of Burden trail is an ambitious 7-mile trek that features varying terrain and, like the aforementioned trails, is managed by the Suwannee Bicycle Association.

Whether you take it slow and steady on the beginner-friendly Gar Pond trail or head straight for the intimidating Beast, biking through North Florida’s scenic nature trails provides an exciting workout and an adventure that can be enjoyed year round.

Learn more about the Suwannee Bicycle Association, upcoming events, and area biking trails at suwanneebike.org.

The Suwannee Bicycle Association, which was founded in 1989, is a non-profit organization that promotes bicycling and environmental education. When they aren’t hosting annual events like the IDIDARIDE, Spring Peddle and Paddle, or the Fat Tire Festival, the biking group manages several of Florida’s popular biking trails, making sure each one is mowed regularly and free of any debris that might interfere with a biker’s path. “You gotta thank the Suwannee Bicycle Association for maintaining the trails,” says Paul, who has been a member of the club for the past two years. Though the association does its best to keep the routes free of trees and other obstacles, Paul encourages fellow bikers to take the initiative whenever possible. “Be a courteous rider. If there’s something across the path that you can take care of, take care of it,” he prompts. Besides holding the title as an excellent type of exercise, the outdoor hobby can be beneficial in other—sometimes more spiritual—ways. “I do it for me, and on the weekends, I do it for fellowship. It’s sort of like my church,” Paul says.

Sea Cadet Liberty Division By Joy H. Coleman USNLCC Cadets LC1 Gracie Peterson and LC2 Gabriel Buckner

Instilling valuable skills in the youth of today There are opportunities in our North Central Florida area for kids to get involved: one is unique and doesn’t get very much attention. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth leadership development organization sponsored by the Navy League and supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.

The corps develops interest and skill in naval disciplines while instilling strong moral character and life skills through leadership and technical programs modeled after the Navy’s professional development system. 94 |

FamilyMagazine

“We strive to instill character and values in our youth with the hopes that they will not only assume leadership roles in future communities but will always lead their lives with patriotism, honor, and respect.”

George Buckner

Navy Veteran and Commanding Officer of the Sea Cadet Liberty Division The Commanding Officer of our area’s Sea Cadet Liberty Division, George Buckner, a Navy veteran, shares, “Most of our cadets have a strong desire to not only succeed, but to excel. Liberty Division Cadets are taught honor, respect, and courage. Above all, they are taught leadership skills.” Sea Cadets are boys and girls from 10 to 18 years of age. USNSCC is comprised of two programs: the Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) and the Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC). The NSCC program is for young people ages 13 through the completion of high school. The NLCC is a junior program for those between ages 10 and 13. There are over 300 units in operation in almost every state of the union, as well as Puerto Rico and Guam, with over 10,000 young Americans participating. Meeting the first and third weekends of each month at the American Legion Post 57, cadets run drills that teach marching skills, participate in team building activities, or complete classes that help them learn life skills and skills that are an introduction to various professions. Skills and knowledge are developed to add value to each member’s future and to help them become employable by introducing them to various careers including catering, first aid, water rescue, communications, navigation, engineering and leadership. There are a good number of participants who take advantage of the Sea Cadets’ various training programs available all over the country, especially at Ashbury University in Kentucky.

Initially, each cadet attends a two-week summer boot camp held in different locations around the country according to each cadet’s schedule. One such camp is held at Middle Florida Baptist Assembly, a privately owned, non-profit retreat and conference center serving Christian groups since 1955. The camp is directed by Martha Robinson, former faculty at Epiphany Catholic School, Lake City, and originator of the local unit in 2012.

Liberty Sea Cadets: PO2 Evan Amparo, SN/AN Blaise Buckner, APC/LC2 Gabriel Buckner, RC/LC1 Harley Castoral, SA/AA James Cote, SN/AN Elizabeth Frier, SN/AN Kybran Greenberg, APC/LC2 Joshua Harris, PO2 Robert Kearce, SA/AA Brian Massimo, SA-T/AA-T Braden Peterson, PO2 Wyatt Peterson, RC/ LC1 Gracie Peterson, SN/AN Zachary Rogers, ENS Lisa Amparo.

The Liberty Division contributes back to the community by serving as color guard at many events including Wreaths Across America, Olustee Festival, and the American Legion’s 100-Year Anniversary Ball. The Liberty Division excelled during the 2019 Inaugural Region 6-1 Flagship Competition, held in April, by placing first in the overall competition. Regional Director LCDR Kevin D. MacFarland, Sr., NSCC, the Commanding Officer of all Sea Cadet units on Florida’s Gulf Coast, congratulated the unit, saying, “The skills learned here help our cadets to succeed in any walk of life… And they have fun while learning.” Being part of the Sea Cadets helps those planning to go into the armed forces as a career, but not all Sea Cadets take that route. While the program is modeled after the Navy and Coast Guard, it is not a recruitment program for the armed services. Those who do enlist are eligible for advanced rating when joining the military. For more information about the Sea Cadets’ Liberty Division, visit libertyseacadets.org, or check out their Facebook page at Liberty Division, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. SUMMER 2019 | 95

Unveils Future Plans & Honors the Past at "A Kawz for Pawz" Founded in 1964, the Lake City Humane Society was formed by a group of animal advocates to address animal welfare issues in the community. Over the years, the organization has grown to support over 5,000 animals each year. As the organization continues to expand, the Lake City Humane Society is currently developing plans to build a custom headquarters for the staff and animals, enabling them to provide more services to the community in this crucial area. The building plans were unveiled at the 2019 Kawz for Pawz event in April, an event that was met with amazing community support with over 500 attendees. A Kawz for Pawz was held at the newly renovated and revealed Truck Stop 75, located on the Ellisville exit just off the interstate. The venue was packed full with local business representatives and animal lovers alike, bidding on animals needing a forever home and celebrating the exciting plans for the new building. Every detail of the event meant so much to the Humane Society team, everything from the meaning behind the building name unveiling to the location of the special event.

Owners Willie Hoffer and Alex Isametdinov outside of Truck Stop 75.

“This event not only represented a member in our community who has contributed so much more than we could ever say, but we also had a tremendous gift from the gentleman at the Truck Stop 75,” Laura Hunter, Lake City Humane Society board member, says. “They allowed us to use their venue and they provided their employees to prepare and serve the food... And the menu was to die for!”

A Kawz for Pawz raised over $27,000 for the Lake City Humane Society!

Are you interested in supporting the Lake City Humane Society?

The nonprofit organization greatly appreciates the community’s support in all of their endeavors. Whether you are looking to volunteer or donate,

Lake City Humane Society's future animal wellness center is named in honor of James Montgomery, educator, long-time member of the LCHS advisory board, and benefactor. Though the venue was not officially open yet, the co-owners of the 60-acre Truck Stop 75 generously donated their services for the event. The completely state-of-the-art truck stop features all the conveniences you would expect, with quite a few upgrades such as the hair salon, sauna, shower quarters, laundry rooms, fine dining restaurant, lounge and quick service food station in their 40,000-square-foot building.

check out their official Facebook page @LakeCityHumaneSociety, or visit their website at lakecityhumane.org. The center always accepts donations for a variety of pet foods and care items, and the staff updates the center’s Amazon wish list regularly.

A Kawz for Pawz “I’d say it was a successful event,” Willie Hoffer, co-owner of Truck Stop 75, expresses. “The people in this community are unlike anywhere else. I would not trade Lake City for anything.” In response to owners Willie and Alex Isametdinov’s kindness, Keith Williams, Lake City Humane Society board member, expresses, “It’s like nothing we have ever seen before. We could not have done this without their help.”

Willie Hoffer, co-owner of Truck Stop 75, venue for Kawz for Pawz, with Lake City Humane Society Board Member Laura Hunter.

The entire Kawz for Pawz event was centered around the reveal of the Lake City Humane Society’s newest venture: a beautiful new home for their services. Architect plans were revealed for the James Montgomery Animal Wellness Center, a centrally located building that

Dr. Celia Martin, winner of the local Dancing with the Stars competition at the 2019 Policeman's Ball, chose Lake City Humane Society as her charity of choice to receive the $1000 prize.

will serve as a no-kill shelter and headquarters for the organization. The decision to name the building after Mr. James Montgomery was a moving moment, and the unveiling of the name was no different. A pillar in the community, James Montgomery can be described as a generous, selfless man with a heart for others. Whether he was teaching students at the local high schools or college, or officiating one of hundreds of wedding ceremonies over the years, Mr. Montgomery’s kindness has shone in all he has done. Serving on the advisory board at the Lake City Humane Society for many years, he always went above and beyond to meet the needs of the animals in Columbia County.

Dr. Celia Martin's Contribution for Cats and Canines It’s no secret this local orthodontist is an animal lover—artistic renditions of her very own fur babies can be seen adorning the walls of her new office space. For the past four years, Dr. Celia Martin has made it her mission to support the local Humane Society in many ways, whether donating pet food or spreading the word about the organization. During the year of 2018 alone, Dr. Martin donated over 59,000 pounds of dog and cat food, along with kitty litter and other supplies. She has also assisted the center in spaying and neutering over 20 feral cats in the area, realizing that simply feeding them is not enough.

“During our board meetings, he would hear of something we needed, whether that was a computer stand Dr. Celia Martin's charity of choice, the Lake City Humane Society, received $1000 from or whatever it was, the Lake City Police Department as her prize for winning the local Dancing with the Stars and that next week, competition at the 2019 Policeman's Ball. he would actually come with a check to pay for whatever With her commitment to the shelter needed that week,” Laura seeing the lives of animals expresses. “That is the kind of person improved, Dr. Martin chose he is. We always felt his presence at the to enter the Dancing with the Humane Society.” Local Stars dance-off held at the 2019 Policeman’s Charity Ball. Dr. Martin and her dancing Between the dedication of the building partner, Billy, swept the judges in James Montgomery’s honor and off their feet and won $1,000 the celebration of the impact Lake for their charity of choice: the City Humane Society has had on the Lake City Humane Society! The community, A Kawz for Pawz was a organization thanks Dr. Martin wonderful time of honoring the past for her generous support and and dreaming for the future. heart for animals! SUMMER 2019 | 99

UF/IFAS North Florida Research & Education Center–Suwannee Valley Article and photography by Emily Pazel

As more and more of Florida’s land becomes swallowed by the construction of new homes and commercial property, there’s a hidden gem that sits just east of Live Oak that remains true to the agricultural commitment it began decades ago. “If you take this region, or the key fact that the total farm gate for Florida agriculture is about $8 billion, and $1 billion of that comes from this Suwannee Valley region, you can get a sense of how this center has become visibly much more important to the agriculture economy,” says Bob Hochmuth, assistant center director of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) North Florida Research and Educational Center–Suwannee Valley. Spread across 400 acres of land, this particular center is the only one that’s located within the borders of the Suwannee River Water Management District, making water and nutrient management a large portion of the center’s research. “There’s more springs in this area than any other place in the world,” Bob says. “So, we’re all trying to share that valuable resource, and for research purposes, trying to develop efficient practices for the utilization of the nutrients that are needed to grow these crops.” The center is located east of Live Oak at the intersection of County Road 136 and County Road 417, and was purchased by the University of Florida back in the 1950s. It was purchased from a local farmer who, at the time, was primarily producing flower bulbs.

“If you take this region, or the key fact that the total farm gate for Florida agriculture is about $8 billion, and $1 billion of that comes from this Suwannee Valley region, you can get a sense of how this center has become visibly much more important to the agriculture economy.” Since then, the center has worked to develop and provide the necessary technology to the farmers throughout the Suwannee Valley region and northeast Florida. From water and nutrient management to greenhouse hydroponic systems, the center is constantly working to develop research and implement new ways to solve issues that farmers may encounter. “Due to the regional nature of this center, we’re trying to find ways that farmers can be more efficient, to be more profitable, and to adopt new technologies in order to accomplish those

GREENHOUSE HYDROPONICS PROGRAM The UF/IFAS North Florida Research & Education Center of Suwannee Valley offers instructional programs through the Small Farms Academy, which provides training to farmers by providing unique, hands-on classes, workshops, and field days on specific topics such as the Greenhouse Hydroponics Program. The Greenhouse Hydroponics Program is a two-day, annual program targeted at teaching farmers how to utilize greenhouse structures and hydroponic systems to grow high-quality products. Since its start in 2009, Bob Hochmuth says roughly 700 people have gone through the course. “It’s open to anyone, and we certainly do attract those individuals from the immediate area, but they also come from other parts of Florida,” he says. “I believe we’re now up to having people attend from 17 different states and 8 or 9 different countries.” Bob explains the uniqueness of the course is that it’s all a hands-on approach. Every March, the center sets up all their greenhouses for training purposes. The course features demonstrations and discussions inside three greenhouses, two high tunnels and one open shade structure. “There’s no other place in the country where they can get the hands-on experience like we provide here,” he says. “People that take this class usually walk away with having a great experience.” If interested in registering for the class, please visit svaec.ifas.ufl.edu or call 386-362-1725.

goals,” Bob says. “In some cases, that may mean evaluating new crops that could be grown in this area that may not be typical to this region. We also have outreach programs for master gardeners and other non-commercial types of programs, as well as a youth program every fall.” The center is responsible for research, as well as extension, Bob explains. The objective is to do the research and be able to extend it out to the people who need it, which is from where the term extension agent is derived. On the research side of things, the center currently supports roughly $30 million grant projects, both state and federally funded. Bob says the larger research components deal with water and nutrient management and others deal with alternative crops and pest management. Bob has been at this particular center for 31 years and has since witnessed a decrease over time with youth being associated with agriculture.

area. The Fall Harvest Experience includes a pumpkin patch and a corn maze, which Bob says isn’t necessarily made up of just corn. “We teach them about the agriculture in this area and the importance of agriculture in this region,” he says. “Once the dust settles, we usually have greeted about 2,000 youth through the schools in the region.” As more people continue to move to the state and build new homes and businesses, land that once held agricultural value will diminish. “I often times look at it as the last agricultural frontier in the state,” Bob says. “There’s a heightened awareness of water and land resources that we have in the area and then trying to make sure that the agriculture producers in the region are profitable.”

“I have seen an incredible change in the cultural makeup of the youth in the community, and over that period of time, a gradual separation from agriculture,” he says. “So there’s fewer youth now that are actually on a farm or associates directly with a farm, which gives us an opportunity to provide educational opportunities to those people.”

Over the last few years, the center has expanded to include a new conference building that can hold up to 100 people. This conference room was the first phase of the two-part plan to expand the center’s overall footprint. The next phase will include an educational pavilion, which will be used for a variety of things such as equipment demonstrations and breakout sessions, eliminating the need to move equipment in and out of the large pole barn currently being used as a pavilion.

The center has dedicated part of its farm for the last 30 years to a fall youth program in which children from local schools around the area are brought in to learn about farming in this

“I always tell people that this is a hidden gem,” Bob says. “The community loves this facility, and I hope they will use it for many years to come.”

Selfless

Brandy Nethery, Andrea Thomas, Kevin Pittman, Florida Park Service Director Eric Draper, Peter Shanks, and Gary Erixton.

IN THE LINE OF DUTY

By Joy H. Coleman

Five park rangers awarded for rescue mission at Big Shoals State Park Lifesaver Awards were presented to five park rangers in March this year for answering the call of multiple boaters in distress in Big Shoals State Park: Brandy Nethery, Andrea Thomas, Kevin Pittman, Peter Shanks, and twotime Lifesaver Award recipient Gary Erixton. The power of the Suwannee River Big Shoals is arresting. Thomas describes it as “an undeniable roar, humbling to hear. The shoals have snapped metal canoes in half, devoured kayaks, even crushed a pontoon boat. Imagine what that type of force and power can do to a person.” Pittman supports her description, saying, “It’s very sharp with jagged serrations everywhere. You hit these rocks, and you’re stuck. It’ll eat just about anything hitting it. The water is exerting close to 250 PSI at some points. It sounds similar to an aircraft flight line or the whoosh of a jet engine. I have to yell to talk to someone less than a foot away.”

With that in mind, you’ll understand what the rangers selflessly performed in the line of duty. On July 3, 2017, several kayaks capsized in the shoals, leaving a brother and sister clinging to rocks, one grandmother stranded, and a father and son fearing their kayak would “These parks are the capsize next.

real Florida. Their natural state is beautiful. That beauty can be powerful or dangerous. Please respect that.”

The rescue effort began around 10 a.m. Thomas spotted the grandmother on the other side of the river bank in an alcove. “The shoals were so loud we couldn’t hear her, and she couldn’t hear us,” Pittman says. —Andrea Thomas Her rescue wasn’t easy. The bank was straight down and “there was barely room to stand in front of her, plus she’d gotten a broken ankle from falling over the shoals.”

Pittman and Shanks creatively used recent training skills to get her up safely. Pittman says, “We told ourselves that we’ll just do what we need to. Until then, we hadn’t done emergency rope rescues with live people; we’d just been practicing and training.”

Each rescue effort had problems. Still in a kayak on the shoals, a father and 4-year-old son couldn’t catch the ranger’s rescue rope for fear of capsizing. In reverse, Erixton got them to cast their fishing line to the rangers. The plan worked as the young boy proved a good aim from about the middle of the river. “He was a dead shot with that rod and reel,” Pittman says. “He nailed us.” Thomas next guided the Hamilton County Emergency Operations Center’s boat up river, reaching the final pair—a 10-year-old girl and her 15-year-old brother trapped on a rock. The shoals were too strong to reach them any other way.

Suwannee River Big Shoals (photo courtesy of the Hamilton County Tourist Development Council). When river levels are low, rocks are exposed and drops are prevalent. Two young paddlers are marooned on rocks. Park Rangers Kevin Pittman, Gary Erixton, and Peter Shanks are on the banks after pulling out two other victims in a kayak.

The rescue mission took over two hours. Shanks shared that their instinct and training kicked in, “We knew we could get injured, but that’s just our part—what we do. Our goal is to make sure nobody gets hurt, everybody has fun, and we all go home safe.” At the end, Thomas says, “I remember thinking, ‘thank goodness everyone is okay, including the responders.’ It was a supreme relief.” Pittman reminds us, “As park rangers, we have a duty to preserve and protect both the natural resources and our visitors. We are very much about promoting and helping the surrounding community. We rely on good community relationships to help our parks thrive. We work to be good stewards of the land and surrounding communities. We help with local events, ecotourism, host fund raisers, natural disasters, wildfire suppression, hurricane clean up, etc. It’s all part of being a good neighbor.” Thomas smiles, “Come out and see the shoals. Look at them—don’t paddle them! Make wonderful memories. These parks are the real Florida. Their natural state is 112 |
