Our Family Winter 2017 Magazine gracefully walks us through the wonderful season of Merry Christmas. Leading us into the fireworks of a Happy New Year, concluding with a glorious 2018 Wedding Section. So, to all the newly engaged couples, enjoy this section, knowing you can entrust this most special day with these tried and true vendors.
The Live Oak Altrusa Tour of Homes will leave you with ideas of just how to add that special touch to your holiday home. Chef Laura Fowler Goss shares recipes from the Family Magazine Recipe Contest. Enjoy the Halpatter Brewery article showcasing the meticulous art of brewing beer, along with the fact they are now open for business. Two wonderful home renovations have been showcased. The Yarbroughs’ renovation of a barn into the loveliest of homes and the Chapmans’ lakeside Fixer-Upper will certainly encourage your inner DIY. New Year’s day can be more than a day for new resolutions. Allow it to also be a day for investing and sharing quality time with your loved ones. So, prepare the Ham and Cheese Casserole on page 126 in advance. Pop it in the oven, grab your little (or big) precious ones, and enjoy the New Year’s Day Parade, as well as a great breakfast – 1 hour and 15 minutes later of course!

Florida is a paradise for beach bums and sunscreen moguls, but when December 25 rolls around, it’s hard to get in the Christmas spirit while wearing flip flops and getting a winter breeze through an air conditioner vent. To compensate for the unseasonably warm weather, a group of Lake City residents began traveling to New York City to get the ultimate Christmas experience.

Shane Beadles and Charlotte Emerson met as on-campus recruiters for the University of Florida football team in the early ’90s and the two have been friends ever since. After spending Christmas Eves

and summer vacations together, they decided to create a new tradition. During the first weekend in December of 1999, Shane, her mom, Gloria Spivey, and Emerson traveled to New York City and established a Christmas tradition. “We were just like ‘let’s just go do a girl’s trip.’ So, we started going and we had so much fun and we were like, ‘Okay, let’s just do this every other year,” Shane says. So, when asked about how to enjoy the city on a long weekend, these ladies are well versed in how this is accomplished! In an effort to maximize your time in the city, the group recommends booking an early flight. With the nearly two-anda-half-hour plane ride from Jacksonville, flying out around 6 a.m. ensures that you are in New York by 8:30 or 9 a.m. That way, you’ll have the entire day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to explore the Big Apple. Recently accompanied by Cindy Edge, when this foursome takes a vacation, they skip the AAA suggestions, TripAdvisor reviews and must-see attractions and try to blend in with the locals. “Our accents don’t give us away,” Charlotte jokes. Over the years, they’ve seen Broadway productions from Mama Mia to Wicked, eaten at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, devoured soul food at The Cotton Club, admired the Rockettes, went to church in Harlem, explored the dark alleys of Chinatown, and climbed into an ominous production van to watch Tim Tebow accept the Heisman trophy. Although they know the layout like the back of their hands, it helps that they always remember to travel with a human GPS. “I’m not directionally challenged. That’s my gift,” Charlotte says. “If I can go there one time, I can get you back there any time, so I’m like tour guide Barbie.” For a holiday-inspired destination, Gloria suggests visiting Bryant Park’s Winter Village, which attracts visitors with ice skating and handcrafted gifts.
20
“It’s a good place to get the local flavor,” Gloria says. While it’s important to see as many things as possible in such a short amount of time, the most rewarding part of traveling is creating fun memories with the people you’re with. Whether it’s the time they wore matching ugly Christmas sweaters, saw a terrible play or embarrassed themselves in front of SNL’s Darrell Hammond, for these four women, reminiscing on these adventures is met with a table full of laughs and the urge to do it all again. “It’s really not about necessarily seeing something new as much as it is being together and having a good time in New York,” Charlotte says.

SUggeSted itinerary Thursday 6:00 a.m. Take the first non-stop flight from the Jacksonville International Airport to LaGuardia Airport. The flight from Florida to New York takes two hours and 20 minutes. 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. Arrive in New York and check your luggage into the hotel. If it’s too early for check-in, most hotels have a room that they store your luggage in until your room is ready. 11:00 a.m. Head to Radio City Music Hall to see the first showing of the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. Getting tickets for a weekday performance held earlier in the day is a great way to see the show and save some money. 12:30 p.m. Once the show is over, explore some of the surrounding eateries.

2:30 p.m. Take in the local shops and boutiques on your way to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which Pope Francis visited back in 2015. 5:00 p.m. Head to Rockefeller Center and get tickets to see the Top of the Rock and overlook the city’s landscape just before sunset. 6:00 p.m. Now is the perfect time to take in the view of the renowned Christmas tree that towers in front of Rockefeller Center. 6:30 p.m. Head to Bryant Park’s Winter Village, which features ice skating, holiday shops and entertainment. Explore the shops first, which close at 8 p.m., then if you’re feeling adventurous lace up your ice skates and glide around the rink, which stays open until 10 p.m. 10:00 p.m. Because New York is the city that never sleeps, on your way back to your hotel, use this time to explore the shops that fill every inch of Times Square
Friday 8:00 a.m. If visiting the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island is on your bucket list, be prepared to spend most of the day taking the boat ride to and from both iconic landmarks. Otherwise you can take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry to get a closer look at the Statue; but first use this Friday morning to your advantage and stop by the Financial District to see the Charging Bull and witness the everyday hustle and bustle of Wall Street. 5:00 p.m. After seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, visit the nearby 9/11 Memorial, which is open until 9 p.m.

share is to sing beautiful Christmas carols that were written long ago with deep meaning and appreciation for the birth of Jesus Christ. Even though the songs are only popular one time a year, the words and tunes are easily recalled as soon as the season emerges. These special songs have a way of telling the Christmas story so that young children can remember and connect with the true meaning of the season. Music truly bridges the gap between generations, so the whole family can participate in singing carols together. Caroling together will put everyone in the spirit, make the season even brighter, and create memories for the entire family that will last well into the New Year!

A
native of Cross City and now Branford, Laura Fowler Goss, Le Cordon Blu trained chef and food designer has earned a solid reputation for her creative first-class catering and stellar service. She’s offered personal chef services, catering, and party planning since 2011. She has catered full time since 2015. This woman is no flash in the pan: Laura Fowler Goss is here to stay. What made her choose this path? “I love parties! My favorite part is that people entertain and host events for joyous occasions. Guests are excited and cheerful! And what’s a party without food? I love beautiful, tasty food. It’s always a pleasure to serve happy events and be part of the joy of celebration.” To Laura, “Food is a world of love, friendships and family moments. How lucky to make a living at that?” The holidays are especially important to her, as they focus on family. “Family means tradition—carrying on old traditions and developing new ones. As our families are always evolving, I enjoy experiencing the closest familial atmosphere: newborn babies, recent marriages, and the passing of special grandparents.”
Florida celebrations involve food—it and its rituals are very much a part of our culture. She commented, “I’m always teaching about the seasons of availability, so children learn when Florida grown foods are at their peak. Those are naturally and seasonally grown for when our bodies need them.”
Some of Laura’s appetizer recipes are from the readers of Family Magazine. We know you will enjoy these delicious appetizers as much as we did!
“Families grow and change, and that is the beauty of tradition. We can hold on to the best and create new and unique traditions. Having everyone together, laughing, sharing, and being together is especially important to me.” Easily found at her website (laurafowlergoss.com), her services include catering for weddings, corporate events, and private parties as a personal chef. She said, “I’m very serious about food and clients. I want to be called for any culinary need from lavish buffets to tasty nibbles. We offer a great value, stress-free catering service. Leave it to the professionals and enjoy your guests! Don’t stress!”

Back in 2015, Jonny Frazier, controls engineer, and his wife Holly, photographer, had been building a small brewing system with hopes to open a small brewery at some point. This escalated when Chris Candler,
president and principal appraiser at Candler, Moses & Co, and Jeremy Gable, graphic designer, got together and decided to reach out to Jonny about teaming up as a trio. The three brewed together for the first time in May of 2015, and after a series of successful home brewing evenings, their first tasting event was in October 2015. Those who have attended different tasting events in the area have loved the varied selections Halpatter has to offer. Their unique brewing

Winter process was designed, built, coded, and fabricated by Jonny Frazier himself. The fully automated programmable logic controller in the brewery’s production room allows the Halpatter crew to rest assured that every batch of beer will consistently taste just as enjoyable as the last. “It takes out all the guess work,” Frazier said. “For best taste, consistency is key.” Halpatter will have six beers on tap yearround and six seasonal beers, available in the brewery’s taproom, local restaurants, and kegs that can be purchased for private parties.
FOUNDER FAVORITES: Seymour Finnegans, an Irish red. It has a red-brown color with a malty body and roasty nose. Roasted garlic is used to achieve a deep, full flavor. Sixteen Springfields. This imperial India pale ale is West Coast style with dry character, not sweet. It has northwestern style hops with piney and floral aromas. Drunk With Power is loved for its robust,
36
winter dark roast malt. It is a Russian imperial stout and has a stronger hop profile than most stouts with ten percent alcohol by volume.
FAN FAVORITE: Coconut Coffee Porter. This beer is brewed using actual sweet flakes of coconut, espresso beans from Sweet Water Coffee Company of Gainesville, and whole vanilla beans. While you will be able to find the custom brews at different restaurants in the area, the allure of Halpatter doesn’t stop at the beer. The atmosphere is unlike any other, with repurposed wood from the historic building renovations, tables made from the fire escapes of the Blanche Hotel, and perfectly fitting murals, designed by Jeremy Gable, in the interior that was designed by John Best. Best is a veteran craftsman behind the scenes, helping to design gorgeous spaces on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Notably, his work has also been displayed on Animal Planet and Insane Pools, and most recently he had the chance to work with Pete Nelson and
the crew on Treehouse Masters.
craftsmanship, creativity and community.”
The varied skill sets of the founders have brought an unmatched collaboration that will leave customers satisfied, yet always coming back for more. They have thought of absolutely everything to make every visit to Halpatter a memorable experience. Patrons will also be able to enjoy snacks and desserts while sipping on the craft beer in either the main upstairs taproom, the downstairs taproom, one of a few meeting spaces, an indoor/outdoor taproom, an outdoor deck, a beer garden, a VIP lounge, or their intimate 90-guest event space. While the founders call it “swamp deco,” when it comes to the interior of this building, seeing is believing because words hardly do it justice!
The name Halpatter pays homage to the history and culture of Native Americans who lived in Lake City and Suwannee Valley. Many of the names of the brews are derived from either Native American or Civil War influences.
The founders of Halpatter intend to create an environment that positively impacts the community and patrons.
Patrons do not have to be beer enthusiasts to know what to order and enjoy the experience at Halpatter because the bartenders are certified beer aficionados, called cicerones. They ensure the best possible experience, and they definitely know their stuff when it comes to craft beer. With the recent economic growth in Lake City and surrounding areas, and the convenient interstates nearby, Halpatter will be a favorite stop among not only locals in the community, but also those passing through. Visit the oneof-a-kind brewery at 264 NE Hernando Avenue in the heart of beautiful downtown Lake City for an experience like no other.
“We are creating a unique experience, not just a place to drink beer,” Candler says. “Halpatter always focuses on

#LoveSmall #ShopLocal Why? By Jeweliana Register Shop local. You’ve probably heard it a million times before now, and this most likely will not be the last time you hear it for good. While it may seem like something so small to order your clothing through an online boutique and have your groceries shipped to your door every week, these online purchases can be a driving factor of small business struggles and failures. Shopping local is not only vital to our city’s economy, but also to our community values and small-town charm. When you think back to who supports your son’s little league team or your daughter’s art program at school, you will most likely recall that a small business chose to contribute to their experience. This act of generosity means that the new uniforms will be bought, the professional photos will be taken and the amazing memories will be made. Without the
donations from small businesses, the high school clubs would not be able to attend their regional conferences, the football teams would not have new equipment, and the new playground would not have been built at the elementary school. Small businesses support our families, so we should support them as well. When you make the decision to shop small, you are a part of something so much greater than the blouse you fell in love with or the baseball bat you purchased. You are supporting a dream. Back when the brick and mortar retailer was just a dream, an entrepreneur decided to take a leap of faith and start their own business. Being a small business owner is hard work, and more often than not, the responsibility of the shop falls on the owner’s shoulders. With the help of local citizens and a community of support, these businesses flourish and an entrepreneur is encouraged to keep doing what they love and are passionate about.

“Often, we are tempted by the lure of lower prices on the internet. We want to save money on the items we need and we automatically assume going online will be less expensive. In some instances, it might be. However, have you considered that this online business isn’t paying local taxes and supporting our local economy? They aren’t providing our friends and neighbors with jobs. They are not volunteering their time and, in many cases, money back into our community to make it a better place to live and work. They aren’t members of our local Chamber of Commerce,” Dennille Decker, Executive Director of Lake City Chamber of Commerce, explains. “If you have children or were ever a student, then you have probably solicited funds from many local businesses to support your child’s sporting team, chorus, youth group, band, or other fundraising effort. We never hesitate to ask for donations from our local business owners, yet when it comes time for us to reciprocate, we go online to save a few dollars?”

IDERS with Caring Hearts held their 6th annual Christmas Toy Run on Saturday, November 4, 2017, donating almost $8,500 and still counting for Voices for Children of Suwannee Valley (Circuit Court District 3). could. We may not be able to do that, but we can give something.”
Previous runs have raised cash plus $8,000 in toys and gifts. This year, almost 200 bikers rode the 55mile run, donating cash and toys, as well as $900 in cash donations and $400 food items to the Lake City Animal Shelter.
For this ride, registration at Sunbelt Chrysler Dodge Ram opened at 9:00 am with refreshments and goodies. At 10:30 am, the United States flag was pulled out and held overhead by all participants. Kickstands went up at 11:30 am for the escorted country ride.
Motorcycle riders across the nation make hundreds of toy runs for the kids. Event founder Danny Murray of Columbia County Cycles shared, “The support and toys come from across North Central Florida and Southern Georgia. It’s priceless to know we’re helping and giving back to our communities. These riders care about kids, and we see them filled with emotion, knowing they’ve done this job well. Some of these kids wouldn’t have Christmas if it wasn’t for events like this.” “It’s also a chance to cast a different light on motorcycle riders. There are those who don’t think motorcycle enthusiasts have big hearts, but they do. Just watch their faces after riders of all kinds stand side by side and stretch the United States flag over their heads and bikes at the starting point. Try to find a dry eye. It’s the same 44 1with providing for children. We all have them, love them, and would give the world to them if we
Murray and Columbia County Cycles have held a total of twelve toy runs. In 2011, Riders with Caring Hearts was formed. In 2016, they became registered as an official 501c3 organization, recognized by the IRS as a charitable not-for-profit organization.

The ride ended at American Legion Post 57. Entertainment was provided by Stone Jones Band. Lunch was provided by American Legion Post 57 and included pulled pork from the Suwannee River Smokers, Sharon’s now-famous macaroni salad, green beans, and dessert. Donations may still be dropped off at Columbia County Cycles (691 SW Sister’s Welcome Rd. #104, Lake City, FL 32025). Checks should be made payable to Riders with Caring Hearts and mailed to the same address. Thanks go to Columbia County Sheriff ’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol for their contribution to the safety of the ride and traffic control. Murray and the group send a huge thank you to everyone who helped or rode, especially Kathy Stafford, Bill Huggins, Laura Sanders, Milton and Amy Argetsinger, and Michele Graves.

Dressing Downton “Downton Abbey” comes to Saint Augustine
—And Best Wishes for a Holiday Filled with Harmony and Joy.
By: Hayli Zuccola For just over 13 weeks, Saint Augustine’s Lightner Museum is taking guests back to the early 1900s. Through the use of antique furniture and vintage décor that’s been stored in the upper level of the museum for nearly 50 years, along with its castle-like exterior, the museum seamlessly transforms into the set of Downton Abbey. Backdrop scenes and detail-oriented sets are recreated with items throughout the museum, which helps patrons immerse themselves into the lives of the British upper-class. However, the true purpose of the exhibit is to showcase the breathtaking period-style costumes that were used throughout Downton Abbey’s six-season run.
C Community Banking at its BEST
Traveling across the country since early 2015, the “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times” exhibition has been coast to coast, making its most recent stop in Saint Augustine. Located in the ballroom of the Lightner Museum, which towers over 75 King Street, “Dressing Downton” contains around 40 costumes that were featured in the Emmy-winning drama. From the tasteful gowns worn by Lady Mary Crawley or the uniforms worn by Matthew and Robert, the Earl of Grantham during World War I, to the attire of the maids and butlers of the Downton Estate, the costume collection covers every aspect of the series. Instead of gazing at the elegant ensembles from a television screen, fans of the series get a limited-time chance to have an up-close look at every bead, thread of lace and layer of fabric that helped bring the characters of Downton to life.

A red barn north of town is where the Yarbroughs call home. It sits beside the Osceola forest with a fish pond and a creek trickling through the woods. This family has found a place to settle down, establish roots, and begin their own family traditions, just as their grandparents had before them. In 2000, the family fell on hard times during the economic crisis. “We lost everything,” Chris recounts, “and we learned so much: especially how to pull together just as my Grandparents Harry and Ethel May Christie did through their marriage.” Chris, owner of National Agricultural Solutions of America, a successful fertilizer company, and Jami, artist and owner of Corn Crib Art, have been married for 23 years. All three children have creative entrepreneurship skills themselves. Chris and Jami made this pole barn into their home, doing the work themselves, using rough-cut cypress throughout for the trim and furniture and corrugated tin found on the farm for the ceiling and walls. “We wanted to keep it looking like a barn,” Jami says. “We want you to walk in and feel, ‘wow, this is a barn!’ When the kids leave the doors open, we can literally say, ‘Were you raised in a barn!?’”

pillar candles in an old turkey feeder, casting a warm glow on the rough-cut cypress. A wreath on the large chalkboard circles a bronzed deer head, providing an elegant finish.
Entering the home, the smell of pine and seasonal sounds are enveloping. The living room employs rustic leather furniture, fluffy pillows, and an old chicken coop on the wall. “It’s a perfect place to hang stockings!”
A coffee bar in the dining room was created from red cypress and offers everything needed to warm up during a cold winter. Over the top hangs a cow painting by Janet Moses.
The kitchen joins the living room and is functionally outfitted with old tin and wooden barrels. The large wooden island was an old checkout counter from a feed store. Jamie shares, “I’m sure it has lots of stories to tell. Each year we all stand alongside of this bar and make cookies with all of the kids. My sisters bring their little ones over and we have flour and sugar from one side to the next. It’s my favorite memory of Christmas, and I hope it will be theirs as well.” The white porcelain sink in the kitchen was found beside the road at the White Springs Bed and Breakfast. A little paint, some new knobs, and a pretty faucet brought it back to life. A Christmas tree and strings of white lights sparkle in the dining room. It sits on a skin rug in the corner, planted in a galvanized wash tub. The dining room table centerpiece is
The back rooms include a mudroom, pantry, and bath. “The simplicity here is cozy and comfortable,” Jami says. “It allows us freedom and time to concentrate on what’s really important: family. It doesn’t take much to decorate for the holidays—we use what nature offers. We bring the outside in. I love the look and smell of natural greenery and pine cones.” The master and children’s bedrooms feel Christmas love, too. Jami uses a garland over the master bed and a single sprig tree. Their daughter’s room is decorated with an old chicken pen gate and cotton wreath over the bed, along with some throw pillows and a primitive tree in a galvanized bucket sitting on an antique trunk. Their son’s room keeps the rustic theme with deer, a couple of trees in a wagon, and some furry snowflake pillows on the beds.
They kept the cement floor, painting it gray. Jami built two big interior barn sliding doors, providing bedroom privacy. The home’s interior is warm, cozy, and comfortable. The soft muted tones of amber, burnished chocolate, and golden wood flows through each room with crisp white shiplap, providing farmhouse contrast. Jami used a mixture of old and new furniture. Sometimes what is new becomes old with paint. “I love using the chalk paint from The Blue Goose Studio.” Christmas at home is a special time of the year. “She wears Christmas colors well!” Jami says. The rusty red and soft cream exterior of the home, along with the warm wooden trim, is stunning. The shutters and window boxes are bright with greenery and pine cones. Jami says, “We learned how to work, love, live and stay strong as a family. We had struggles, but it made us better because of it. Honestly, if he built me a mansion today, I would still prefer this barn. It represents all that we are. It’s a token of our survival as a marriage, a family, and a home. We’ve experienced the power of family, and our family is home. We know we can make anything out of nothing, and we’re sharing that lesson with our family.” “The very best compliment I can get is to hear, ‘this feels like home.’”

Like mistletoe, hanging a kissing ball by the doorway is a Christmas tradition. Filled with lush evergreen branches, cinnamon-scented pinecones, cranberries and a little bit of glitter, kissing balls can bring holiday joy to any home; and making one yourself with artificial greenery means you can display it year after year.

7-Inch Styrofoam Ball Pinecones White Paint Paint Brush Hot Glue Gun Glue Sticks Evergreen Branches Cranberries Ribbon Holiday Floral
STEP 1: Cut a strand of ribbon about 2 ½ feet long, fold in half and tie a loop at one end. Wrap the two ends around the Styrofoam ball and secure with hot glue. Tie a bow to finish it off.
STEP 2: Use white paint to brush the tips of the pinecones to create a frosted snow effect. Hot glue the pinecones around the Styrofoam ball—be careful not to burn your fingers!
STEP 3: Fill any open gaps with greenery, cranberries, poinsettias, glitter picks, ornaments or any other festive holiday décor.
STEP 4: Hang on your front porch to add a burst of Christmas to your home.

J Jay and Angie Stuckey
Merging two different worlds with love By Susan K. Lamb Photography by Tammy Johns Photography
60
Jay and Angie Stuckey are a unique husband and wife team from two totally different worlds that have now combined through a true love story. Friends brought them together initially, but a huge roadside billboard with the words “Angie, will you marry me?” is where this wonderful journey really began. After nearly 20 years, it has snowballed into a beautiful home in downtown Live Oak, trips around the world, life on 5,000 acres of Colorado cattle land on the Santa Fe Trail, lots of cowboys and cattle, and the blessing of their wonderful son Jake, now a 16-year-old entrepreneur beginning his own journey into the world of team roping, saddle broncs, cowboys and ranching with his own honey businesses and dreams of a career in animal nutrition. But, let’s get back to that billboard! After Jay, who describes himself as “just an old cowboy,” met Angie, he knew he had lost his heart to this beautiful Live Oak lady he could not live without. He rented
the billboard, had the marriage proposal placed there and waited. Friends also waited breathlessly that day for Angie to see it! She did, finally, and the answer was “Yes!” Thus began the journey that books and movies could be written about... And Angie just may be the one to write the book one day! Angie, born and raised in Live Oak, says the journey actually began when her youngest daughter suggested Angie needed to get married again. “I told her I didn’t have anyone in mind and we would have to pray about it,” she laughs. “He’s an answer to prayer.”
Prayers do make things happen, and that is where Jay, who lived in Bronson at the time, came into the picture; the marriage proposal happened, and the two very different people married. Needing a home, they purchased a historic 1930s home known most recently as the Crapps House or the Wadsworth House in earlier days. Jay said they had this breathtaking home completely remodeled, and today it’s warm, inviting, and cozy, often filled with family and friends, and is the place for memorabilia from their life together. Among those special articles are antelope trophies from their ranch, two of Jay’s life-size trophies, and others from their African hunting expedition. “On our trip to Africa, Angie almost got eaten by a baboon…the first day… and all I could think about during that was how am I going to tell her daddy she got eaten by a monkey!” Jay laughs, suggesting that her dad may not have thought too much about his daughter going to Africa in the first place!
61
Winter (Surely that episode will be in the book Angie may write someday, if her husband has his way.) Each year at Christmas, Angie lovingly decorates the home beautifully inside and out. It’s always on the must-see list of the hundreds of people who drive around the county looking at Christmas lights and decorated homes during the holidays. Several years ago, the home was on the Altrusa Tour of Homes where the public was invited to come inside. Their family also gathers here for the holidays. Angie says she was always her daddy’s helper growing up, and today she continues that role as a willing helper with Jay in their ranching, cattle and other business endeavors. She is also assistant principal at Suwannee High School in Live Oak, where she’s been employed with the school system for many years. Jay runs a hay and cattle farm in Suwannee County, in addition to a

business in Chiefland. “I run some cows here and winter our cow ponies here in the winter,” Jay says. A Florida businessman for 45 years, Jay owned Southern Sportsman in Live Oak for 17 years. “I retired out of the retail side and still do the agriculture side now,” this real life western cowboy notes. There’s more! Early in their marriage, and about to take a second safari to Africa, Jay and Angie got the surprise of their lives… Jake Stuckey was on the way! The trip was cancelled, their children by earlier marriages were surprised, and, before long, Jake was being raised by loving parents. Today, Jake, a high school junior who recently won a state FFA award for his honey bee business, has grown into a handsome, mature young man who will one day take over the family ranch in Colorado. Meanwhile, he sells honey, eats and sleeps team roping, and saddle broncs in North Florida and Colorado. He also helps with the cattle

roundups twice a year in Colorado, among other activities. While attending high school, he’s getting his first two years of college completed also. When he finishes, he is considering studying animal nutrition.

“He will take over the ranch one day,” his dad announces with pride. This family, their five children, 11 grandchildren, and other close family have a tradition where the male members of their family head to Colorado and hunt antelope every October.

“We also have a tradition, we do a cattle roundup the old-fashion way on horseback, cook and eat out on the porch of our home there, and have a great time,” Angie explains. Jay adds that he, Angie and Jake go to the ranch three to four times each year to take care of the business and hold a cattle roundup twice yearly.

Angie is an integral part of all of this; we couldn’t do it without her. She brings the horse trailer around to us, opens gates and drives the ‘mule’ (which is an ATV).” Jake is
right there on horseback with his family, helping with the family business also. Jay suggests he’s come full circle in his life. “I’ve gone back to my roots; I’m continuing a family tradition (ranching),” he declares. Raised in Ohio and Colorado by his German Mennonite family among the Amish, Jay says the old ways of ranching and farming is gone. Jay’s farming family can be traced back to 1752 in America,

The day will come when they will be free to live on the Santa Fe Trail and/or her hometown of Live Oak or both. Either way, their future is bright and exciting, and there are not too many dull moments in their home filled with true love.
Directions In a large saucepan, melt the butter and stir in flour. Next, stir in milk, cream and chicken broth. Cook and stir until bubbly and thick. Stir in chopped chicken and the dash of pepper. Garnish with chives and serve warm with your choice of crackers or bread.

Outdoors By Jason Melvin
With December comes the winding down of deer season. I often get that lull from sitting in my stand having watched the same trees for months. Occasionally, I have the privilege of already harvesting that deer I had been looking for and am searching for a new challenge. A few years ago, I was asked to go duck hunting with a friend. I was reluctant at first, but after shooting a few boxes of shells, I wondered what took me so long to get started. Now I can honestly say I look forward to December, knowing a new challenge is literally on the horizon. While there are numerous types of ducks here in North Florida, probably the most plentiful and most beautiful has to be the Wood Duck. He is an extremely fast flier with a unique call. While they can be hard to shoot, they are not that hard to locate and hunt. I would say, the first thing needed for a successful shoot would be the ducks. Scouting numerous areas to find birds is a must. I like to look for shallow ponds surrounded by oaks to locate these squealing beauties. Woodies are a dabbling duck and will only feed in areas they can reach while floating—unlike many of the diving varieties that have a diet of fish and other aquatic creatures. Wood ducks feed primarily on acorns and other vegetation. Keep this in mind when looking for potential areas to hunt. I know many of you reading this will say, “I don’t have access to any ponds like that” and think this isn’t an option. While you may not currently have something like this, I am often surprised at the number of land owners that will grant permission to shoot ducks when asked. Don’t hesitate to ask, and remember all they can do is say, “no.” If you are still unable to find one or two of these gems, you are not out of options. Our area is blessed with multiple rivers and creeks offering public access. While
66
bass and redbellies are normally the focus here, wood ducks inhabit these waterways as well. I like to ride the river looking for small fingers or sloughs where they will feed. When water levels are up, I have had tremendous success hunting these public waterways.
Jason Melvin
When it comes to strategy, each location will be different from the next. The size of your area will determine how to set up. Try to safely cover the area while paying close attention to the location of your fellow hunters. Having a knowledge about the direction of approaching birds will help you in determining shooting location. Just know this location may change depending on wind direction. I like to hunt with decoys. Woodies are very social and naturally gravitate to the decoys you have displayed. I do not use many, but will normally place three to six that can be visible to passing birds. In addition to decoys, I use a wood duck call. Wood ducks do not quack, so Grandpa’s old Mallard call isn’t what you want. Due to their social behavior, they respond well to the call. I cannot tell you how many times birds have flown into my general area, only to lite in a different location. Using the call will let them think others are nearby. If they aren’t aware of your presence, they will normally come in to check it out. The only tip I can give you is to practice, practice, practice. The internet is a great source for how and when to use your call. Finally, and most importantly, be absolutely sure you are hunting with all the required licenses and stamps. Ducks are federally managed and many regulations differ from that of other game species. Do not let ignorance to the law be the ruin of your hunt. Your local FWC officer will be happy to answer any questions you might have. He would rather share the correct way to harvest a duck prior to your hunt than after. You would too!

e still had our “other house.” So, here’s where the rubber meets the road, or to say it more accurately, where the money leaves the bank account. I won’t get into the selling of the other house—it’s safe to say we had more drama than the Kardashians—but you can’t do a total renovation with “I owe yous” and chocolate chip cookies (even double-chocolate chip still won’t work). It’s weird most of the workers we had in and out of our house for 9 months wanted to be paid? Who knew?!
BIG Advice #2: Hire the right contractor! In fact, this may be more important than the money in the long run. We’re friends with several talented contractors, so we had great options everywhere we looked. But, one guy stood out because his vision was EXACTLY what my wife’s vision was: Adam Papka with Adam’s Construction. Andrea and Adam were lock step together on their plan from the start. Now we had the money and the guy. One of my requirements is that he’d have to go fishing a few times to discuss design ideas—I mean what better place to get creative than on the water? Ha!

BIG Advice #1: Here’s that trust thing again. I trust First Federal Bank of Florida more than I trust myself when it comes to money. By the time this was all said and done, they knew more about me than my wife does, and they creatively found ways to make all of these projects happen. Brooke Meng, Renee Faulkner, Robb Burns, Robert Turbeville, and so many other team members jumped through hoops over and over again for a full year. So, now we knew how we were going to fund it.
“We knew it would be a big project; we knew it wouldn’t be easy, but it paid off in the long run,” Rob says. “So, you know, it’s a process and it takes time; you have to be patient. If you don’t have patience, then redoing a house is not a project for you.” 70
We trusted Adam for all things overall renovation/design and we used all Lake City owned companies: Lake City Industries for doors, wood, supplies, and so much more; Lake City Glass for the jaw-dropping custom glass that are the focal point of the entire house. You name it, we had someone local working on it. We gutted the entire house and changed the layout dramatically. New kitchen, new glass, walls torn down, walls built, this moved, that moved; we went through giant dumpster after giant dumpster. We did a lot ourselves early on— wallpaper removal (inside tip: use a steamer), floor removal (carpet is SO much easier than tile), kitchen completely gutted and walls removed (invest in a crow bar and good gloves), bathrooms ripped apart (tubs aren’t light), stripped popcorn ceiling (make sure you wear a mask and goggles), and changed all of the odds and ends (light switches to knobs). We received so much support from friends and family it was almost embarrassing. Without the help of so many wonderful “volunteers” we’d probably be living in a hotel right now. We did as much as we could after work, weekends, days off ; but eventually we did what we could and didn’t need to DIY screw up anything permanent. I don’t do electricity. Ever. If it can kill you, I don’t mess with it. It’s why I don’t ride horses or have pet snakes. So, we leaned on talented sub-contractors. One thing we were determined to do on our own was paint. No way were we going to pay for that. But ...

BIG Advice #5: “I had zero vision. My wife had a vision, and she says to this day, the house came out exactly how she wanted it to be. So, in her head she saw it the whole time; I had no idea what she was doing,” Rob says.
We did some dumb things; we did some smart things. Our best move by a mile, in terms of pure storage and cost saving, overall, was going with Buildings And More for a “giant garage” of sorts, separate from the house, for a fraction of the price of an addition. Huge, metal, modernlooking, and we never had to rent storage space. After all was said and done, we had a ton of sweat equity in the house, made a pile of mistakes, and learned many valuable lessons, but it was absolutely worth it. We had completed our dream fixer upper on a budget, thanks to an amazing local team of experts and amazing friends and family.

BECOME A PARTNER
P HOW CAN YOU HELP A FOSTER OR ADOPTIVE PARENT? Being a foster or adoptive parent is not for everyone. But readers of this article can help those who foster by providing a date night, cooking a warm meal, mentoring a child, providing back-toschool supplies and holiday presents, or whatever support foster parents need.
“WE HAVE QUITE A LARGE NEED IN COLUMBIA, HAMILTON, SUWANNEE AND LAFAYETTE,” —PATRICIA CARROLL, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND RECRUITMENT FOR THE PARTNERSHIP FOR STRONG FAMILIES.
artnership for Strong Families (PSF) needs foster homes: 880 children in 13 counties (Circuit Courts 3 and 18) are identified as “out of home,” meaning they’re removed from their home due to abuse, neglect, or their homes not being safe at that time. PSF’s first choice is to place a child with a relative or family friend. If that’s not available, then a foster home is the next choice. For their 880 children, they only have 103 foster homes. As you learn more about Partnership for Strong Families, reflect on the information and ask yourself, “Is becoming a foster parent or adoptive parent a good way to ‘pay it forward’?”
success story.
WHO ARE THE CHILDREN?
The goal is reunification with the biological family. Until then, the goal is to keep each child within their familiar community and support system. This journey for the children and parents is not necessarily a dead-end road, but a road for families to learn effective parenting.
Children enter foster care because they cannot safely remain in their homes. They have unique strengths and needs. Some are experiencing a variety of social, emotional, behavioral or physical difficulties because of abuse and/or neglect. Their ages range from birth to 18 years old. Stereotypes write off the child who is in “the system”. The truth is, each child is one caring adult away from being a
WHO ARE PARTNER FAMILIES? Foster Parents or “Partner families” as PSF call them, are special people who open their hearts and homes by creating a sense of warmth, connection, and permanency in every child’s life during their most challenging times. They are loving and nurturing. PSF strongly promotes natural family reunification, but if this can’t be achieved, they support the child through the adoption process. Investing time, energy, love and guidance, partner families make a huge difference in the lives of children in need.
Partner families are focused on the children, but because the child stays connected to the biological family, there’s a great teaching opportunity.
HELP US TELL OUR STORY PSF has an outreach program actively seeking speaking engagements, especially in churches, civic and service organizations, newspapers and magazines, special interest and hobbyist groups, teachers, and other professional organizations. While one presentation may not yield a foster parent, it will a.) highlight the need and b.) spread the word: friends have friends who have friends. A few “degrees of separation” and the outreach words will soon resonate in someone’s heart with love to share with a child.
“THE REWARD IS NOT AT THE END OF THE RELATIONSHIP. IT’S EVERY DAY. TO KNOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S LIFE, ONE DAY AT A TIME, IS REWARDING.
—ANGELA OGBURN
—BEVERLY POPE
IT’S A GREAT JOY TO HELP THESE KIDS
ONE DAY AT A TIME IS REWARDING
Angela and Larry Ogburn have been licensed for three years, and, during that time, have had 15 to 20 foster kids. She says, “The best part is in loving them—so many are broken. To see them do good and achieve things is the most rewarding experience. To watch children grow into who they were meant to be—I could not imagine my life any other way.” She continues, “We have the full support of our family and our church. My daughter, my husband: they are my best assets. We couldn’t do it without all of them.”
For five years, Beverly Pope has been a foster parent in Lake City. Her motivation began as her children grew up and moved on. “It may have been an empty nest,” she shares. For Beverly and her husband, “the reward is not at the end of the relationship. It’s every day. To know we make a difference in someone’s life, one day at a time, is rewarding. We never knew so many children needed care. Gaining knowledge is what’s needed to get started. Education and increased awareness— that overcomes misconceptions about foster children.”
IS NOT YET OVER Every Kid is One Caring Adult Away from Being a Success Story
Try this: identify one kid. Then consistently and intentionally invest time with that one kid. “Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult,” acording to Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child (March 2015). Whoever it may be, you have the power to make a positive and significant difference in his or her life. Do for ONE kid what you wish you could do for ALL kids. Don’t get discouraged: Sometimes when you’re investing the time, you’ll think, “It’s not working.” Consider this: kids spell TRUST like T-I-M-E, and when you consistently invest time in a kid—even if they’re acting out and you don’t think they deserve it—the care and attention will pay off.
“WE REFER TO OUR HOME AS A REVOLVING DOOR. WE HAVE FOUR CHILDREN, FIVE ADOPTED AND PERMANENCY ON TWO. ”
Larry reflects, “it’s a great joy to help these kids. I love to see the joy on their faces, seeing them happy and thriving with love, normalcy, and stability. What they need is love. My biggest surprise was in realizing how broken the kids are when first coming here—that was a tough adjustment. It was hard to understand. Both Angela and I had good parents, good families. We never saw this kind of behavior before; the tragedy that’s in their young lives.
76
Partner families can show positive parenting skills. The biological family can listen or watch how the foster family handles, manages, communicates, and resolves various situations. They can see good communication skills, anger management, and how to handle frustration. They can see how family dynamics work and begin to understand the differences between what they’ve done and what the foster family does.
THEIR STORY
Let them know you see their potential: “You’re not a problem. You’re an opportunity.” Your kid may keep causing problems and trying to make things difficult. Remember this: when kids don’t talk out, they will act out. Be there for the kid in your life and let him or her know you see under the surface of their troubles. You see what they can be— and what they can be is amazing. Be that one caring adult—that person who changes a kid’s life with a simple, caring act. It starts with you, and it starts now.

This EASY recipe was an instant hit with the Family Magazine staff. The addition of the tartness of the Granny Smith Apples is such a compliment to the entire dish. Yummy and delicious! Family Magazine’s test kitchen found you can control the sweetness by using milk chocolate, semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips. Your choice!
PAULA JENKINS’ SENSATIONAL S’MORES PIZZA
• 2 cans of crescent roll dough • 2 Granny Smith apples, sliced thin • 1 ½ cups of creamy peanut butter, softened • 12-ounce bag of chocolate chips • 1 bag of mini-marshmallows
This recipe puts a fun twist on the classic dessert pizza. Start off by spraying your pizza pan with nonstick spray to avoid messes later. Unroll and line the pizza pan with crescent dough. Combine the dough from both cans together to form a pizza-shaped crust, then bake the dough for about five minutes or so at 350 degrees. Take the dough out of the oven and top it with softened peanut butter. Arrange the apple slices on top of the peanut butter and top them with chocolate chips. Finish off by adding the mini marshmallows (as many as you want—we used about half a bag) and put the dish back into the oven until the marshmallows are toasted well. Serve warm.

After that, “we have six and a half weeks to design, build, program and test a 120-pound robot,” Crews says. At the end of the build period, robots are “bagged and tagged” so they can no longer be worked on or practiced with until they arrive to the regional competition, which hosts teams from all over the world; and so, the game begins.
By Hayli Zuccola
Twenty-eight years ago, Dean Kamen wanted to find a way to get students interested in math and science with the same enthusiasm and excitement they had for athletics; so, he developed a STEM-based program called FIRST: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Instead of shooting a puck into a goal, scoring a touchdown, or getting a home run, robotics competitions involve students working together to design a player–or robot–that can pick up objects or drive over obstacles along with a myriad of other skills in order to score points. While they have progressed year after year, it wasn’t until their seventh and most recent competition season that Columbia County’s own Get Smart robotics team pushed past the Florida Regionals and made it all the way to the FIRST Championship. In 2010, Columbia High School was awarded a grant to start a robotics team, and, during this time, Celena Crews, who has a degree in aerospace engineering, had just become the school’s new physics teacher. Although
90 1
she had no experience with building robots, the principal at the time continued to ask her to head the program, and, after a while of resistance, she finally agreed to be the team’s lead mentor. Before the build season, Crews and other mentors do various workshops with the students like project management and tool training, which can be learning simple skills like reading a tape measure to operating a 3D printer or using a CNC router. These workshops are just the precursor to kickoff and the announcement of the new game. Every year there is a new theme and game for the competition, and everyone finds out the rules, requirements, and object of the game at the same time.
Three teams are randomly selected to play against three others, and the goal is to accrue more points despite the game’s defenses and obstacles. This continues round by round until the end, and if the team gets enough points, they go on to the championship competition later in the year. “What you see that’s different than sports are teams helping teams. So, you have this 10-by10 pit area and it’s like NASCAR. You’re rushing your robot back there and fixing what broke or making code modifications and then you’re getting back out there for your next match, but you see teams jumping in and helping solve problems that other teams are having,” Crews says. “In football, you don’t see a team going across the field to help the other team; that just doesn’t happen.”
“It’s one of the most amazing learning experiences that I have ever had,” says the team’s captain, Taylor Dampier, who is also part of the public relations side of the team. “Not only does it let you learn new skills, but it gives you skills that you’re going to need throughout your whole entire life.” Over the past seven years, Columbia County’s Team 3556, or Get Smart as they are more affectionately known, has won the Engineering Inspiration Award, which was sponsored by NASA, as well as the Gracious Professionalism Award, and they made it to the World Championship held in Houston this past season. The team has also worked to bring this learning experience to other grade levels throughout the community with FIRST Lego League Junior for students in kindergarten to fourth grade; FIRST Lego League, designed for grades fourth through eighth; FIRST Tech Challenge for seventh to twelfth; and, for the past two years, they have expanded outside of CHS to include the surrounding high schools in the FIRST Robotics Competition. “It’s been a great investment in our community,” Crews says. “The money that everyone has given us truly changed the lives of a lot of kids and will continue to do so.”

Lester and Ann McKellum believe anyone who desires to be a homeowner should get the opportunity to become one. In 2002, they established the nonprofit organization, The Greater Lake City Community Development Corporation, Inc., to assist economically-challenged families by setting up and offering free programs to help them earn their high school diplomas, gain financial literacy and develop employability skills, as well as fostering networking partnerships with mentees and mentorships. Without blueprints or financial resources to build an organization, their decision to start the GLCCDC derived from their strong faith in God and determination to make a difference in their community.

“And God’s word said to my spirit: “I want you to prosper those in need of betterment” — Lester Mckellum
Since 1998, the McKellums have owned Uniquely U, a unisex salon where Lester barbers and Ann is a beautician. Lester says, “God’s words said to my spirit: ‘I want you to prosper those in need of betterment’. ” After making excuses and considering many obstacles that could get in the way of operating a nonprofit business, Lester says a friend and client, Willie B. Allen, encouraged him to take the ‘leap of faith.’ The trailblazers say Allen donated one hundred dollars to the initial efforts of the organization. “With their drive and work attitude, it’s unimaginable for them not to see a task through,” Allen shares. Spear heading multiple projects, the McKellums have formed networks that have secured homes for several families and recently built an apartment complex that has revitalized a northern neighborhood. Currently, they are working on building a new, 60-unit apartment complex that will serve economically challenged and homeless individuals.

Anitra Borroto Another successful undertaking Ann has created is the Young Women of Excellence Program. With this program, GLCCDC works with young ladies from grades 9 through 12 who are selected by school personnel and concerned parents. Several mentor educators and professionals meet at Columbia High School to shepherd these ladies in building and enhancing their self-esteem and leadership skills and help route their career paths. Mentors take turns teaching a book course, The Young Woman’s Guide for Personal Success, during the school year to prepare these students for college and future life successes. In 2016, “I pleaded with then superintendent Terry Huddleston, who gave me the green light to start the needed program. With the mentors’ guidance, three young ladies have graduated and enrolled in college,” Ann explains.
The nonprofit organization is encouraged and supported by Ann’s family. Ann’s mother, Mrs. Gladys Middleton, 94, has been a strong pillar of support with Lester’s and Ann’s blended families. Together they have 9 children, 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. All play enormous roles along with community partners in ensuring their Annual Fundraiser Banquet held at Columbia County Fairgrounds each Saturday of the last week of February is a success. The thirteenth banquet will take place February 24, 2018. Tickets may be purchased through GLCCD during this time, and monetary donations are always welcome throughout the year.

Gail says, “My sister has motivated me to do my best and has always been communityoriented.” Gail explains that she was a homemaker who received compliments for making beautiful cakes. After Ann’s heartening support, she gained the confidence to make cakes professionally at Publix Food Store in Jacksonville and became one of their best cakemakers in town. Now Gail, too, is a business owner, decorating cakes (theecakeshoppee.com). As the McKellums continue to spread their vision in the community, the benefits of serving their community come one client at a time, and they are grateful to serve.

HEALTHY SKIN
ALL WINTER LONG By Hayli Zuccola
A
s the temperature lowers, so does that Florida humidity that keeps our skin looking soft and moisturized throughout the rest of the year. So, how can you protect your skin from the winter dryness? Dr. Kelly Tepedino from North Florida Dermatology shares some tips and tricks to keep your skin looking healthy all year long. “One of the biggest things that people don’t realize when they think about skin care during winter is that you need to protect your skin from the sun,” Dr. Tepedino says. “It is still very important to continue to wear your sunscreen during the winter.” Dr. Tepedino also recommends paying attention to which sunscreen you buy, making sure it protects from both UVB and UVA rays. “UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburns, and the SPF number indicates the amount of protection against UVB radiation. That’s why if you wear sunscreen that has a high SPF, you don’t burn. Most people aren’t aware that SPF is not related to the amount of protection from UVA rays, which cause signs of photoaging like fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Tepedino explains. “A good sunscreen should protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a sunscreen that either says it protects against UVA and UVB or it will say ‘broad spectrum,’ which means the same thing.” Although protection from the sun is the most important part of your skincare routine, the steps to healthy skin start before you even head out into the sunshine.
“Bathing is an integral part of the skincare process. A lot of people think that moisturizing their skin just involves applying lotion every day, but it really starts with the bathing routine. When you bathe, you should avoid really hot water that can dry your skin out more, so you want to stick to lukewarm water, and then you want to find a gentle soap, something like Dove, Cetaphil, or CeraVe, and you don’t want to spend too much time bathing. About 10 or 15 minutes should be it, and then you’re done. Then you want to pat your skin dry and, lastly, moisturize,” she says. While it may be difficult when choosing a moisturizer, Dr. Tepedino suggests steering clear from fun scents like creamy pumpkin spice, apple blossom field, or any other delicious-sounding lotions. “When you’re shopping for a moisturizer, you want to look for something that’s going to improve the skin barrier and add hydration. Often, creams and lotions have additives that can be irritating to the skin, so in general it’s best to avoid things with pretty colors, glitter, and fragrances,” she says. Taking precautions like wearing sunscreen and using the right moisturizer are small, simple steps that can lead to big results like keeping your skin healthy and glowing well after summer ends.
Top 5 Winter Skincare Tips: Hydrate. Just because the warm weather is gone does not mean that we can stop hydrating our bodies. Drinking plenty of water is essential to your health and can help keep your skin clear and hydrated.
Install a humidifier. The air is much drier in the winter, so utilizing a humidifier in the evenings is a great way to give your skin a little extra moisture. Plug it in each night before bed and allow it to disperse moisture into the air to aid in dryness prevention.
Switch up your skincare routine. While we all have our skincare favorites, consider switching up your routine in the wintertime. Opt for thicker creams and lightweight oils to add a little extra moisture and nourishment to your skin. Try to steer clear of drying cleansers and treatments, as they could dry out your skin more.
Exfoliate. Using an exfoliating product can assist in getting the dry skin off so that you can moisturize effectively. Get rid of the dead skin with an exfoliating body wash, facial cleanser or lip scrub to properly prep your skin for your moisturizer.
Treat your skin to masks. Take the time to treat yourself. Grab a hydrating sheet mask or mix a few hydrating ingredients together for a DIY mask. Some great ingredients to include are honey, avocado, banana or olive oil. Mix a few of the ingredients together and let it sit on your face for 15 to 30 minutes to allow your skin to soak up the moisture.

wedding That perfect weekend in March, we decided we wanted to do an engagement party that turned into a SURPRISE wedding that summer. We told our parents and NO ONE else! They were leery of how we would pull it off. And just like that… We did it! We planned what all our closest family and friends thought was an elaborate engagement party. As our guests arrived, we greeted them, had cocktails and hor d’ oeuvres! Ryan and I slipped off and changed into our wedding attire, and our event planner escorted the crowd around to the pond for what they thought was a group picture. Suddenly, our guests were serenaded by song, and Ryan and his son walked down an aisle formed by the crowd. Next, I was ushered down by my two boys as my daughter tossed petals just ahead of me. My Dad met her half
way and escorted us in to join our new family! My aunt was the officiant. Our one goal for this special day was for it to be intimate, meaningful and about our two families becoming one! And it was just that… the sweetest, most touching day for every single person there! Every jaw was drooping with surprise and not a dry eye! Not only did Ryan and I exchange vows, but we also had promises to our children that we made to them, before our family and friends. The best words of the night were being announced as the new Brittain–Griffis family. We eagerly moved to our beautifully decorated reception to share our excitement and love with the people we cherish most. Eating, dancing, cake, toasting, more dancing, more eating and loving on our newly formed family was what the night called for. We ooh
and aah often over our perfect, flawless wedding! I often tell Ryan I cant remember what it was like before him ( ok, maybe a little), and I don’t know how we got here, but maybe this is exactly what we needed in God’s perfect time. He is someone who makes me forget where I came from and someone who can make me love without knowing how to fall. Just like the song… Not sure why [your] path crossed mine— accident or grand design?” We meet these people throughout life, out of nowhere, under the strangest circumstances, and they help us feel alive! This love and life is my new favorite feeling!
Event Planner:
Imperial Productions It’s funny how seeing a love story never gets boring, because it’s the dream, isn’t it? It’s the dream to have a true connection with another human being. Life is one big love story with hundreds of little love stories within it… Well, the minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along.
Picture this: On a cool March Friday, out of the blue my baby girl was admitted to Shands Hospital due to a rare auto-immune disease. (Side note: She recovered beautifully! No worries!)
Ryan & Karen
We had planned a photoshoot at the beach for the very next day. Due to the unexpected Brittain hospital stay and exhaustion, I contacted the photographer and my stylist to cancel. What I didn’t know was Ryan had planned this special shoot as a surprise engagement session. He was quietly texting all the people I was cancelling with and reinstating the appointments without my knowledge. We made it home, he ushered me to appointments and made sure that I had all the girly requirements that I had originally planned for our photo shoot. Impressive for a guy… I know! It was a beautiful evening! It was pouring rain; I was complaining that we should reschedule, but he insisted we keep on as planned. Gorgeous dress + hair and makeup session + RAIN = BEST DAY EVER! We were soaking wet and engaged!
Love Story: Surprise!
Sometimes this life throws us curve balls. Many times we miss, but many times we knock it out of the ballpark! Our love story basically comes down to we were just meant to be! And we knew it from the beginning of our relationship.

Wedding season is blooming, and so are stunning floral creations. From bridal hairstyles to flower walls, the floral craze has officially taken over wedding season. If you are looking for some flower power wedding inspiration, check out some of these floral trends for 2018.
Stylish Succulents Perfect for the modern and trendy bride, this bouquet puts a unique twist on the traditional flower arrangement. The variety of green shades shown in the bouquet contrasts nicely against the white lace of a bridal gown, creating a trendy vibe in photos. Succulents are all the rage right now, so why not incorporate them into your big day? Greenery Galore Step aside small flower bouquets, cascading greenery is here to stay. If you are looking for a way to add some magical greenery to your day, consider opting for large leaves and long-stemmed hanging flowers. Greenery like eucalyptus and sword ferns are perfect for bouquets and can add a great natural element to your table décor
and reception area. It will give off a beautiful, rustic vibe— perfect for an outdoor event.
Pretty Paper Creations This trend is perfect for the bride on the budget. These “flowers” are made completely out of paper, so not only are they wallet-friendly, but they will not wilt or ruin. The DIY bride can find tutorials on how to make paper flower centerpieces, as well as many other wedding décor items on YouTube or Pinterest that are perfect for wedding arches, photo backdrops or even the bridal bouquet. Charming Chairs Floral chair elements are just right for a Boho-chic wedding. Add a whimsical touch to ceremony and reception chairs with a floral arrangement of cascading greenery and your favorite flowers in your coordinating colors.
Amazing Arches Who wouldn’t want to say “I do” under a beautiful flower arch? This trend has been done in hundreds of different ways by using different flowers, incorporating tapestries or sheer curtains, or by adding lights to the wooden posts. Whichever way you decide to style it, this arch is sure to make a statement and prove to be the perfect backdrop for ceremony photos. Bold Backdrops Your guests will absolutely love snapping selfies in front of a beautiful flower wall! Go simple and pin a few flowers to a pair of curtains or go all out and fill an entire sheet of wood with flowers. Consider adding in a quote about love or your names and your special date to the photo op, then provide some stylish photo props for your guests. Incorporating a DIY flower wall may be a bit time consuming, but the end result is worth the effort. Flirty Flowers In Her Hair While flowers are normally reserved for the bouquets, floral hair elements are quite popular right now. Whether you are rocking an up-do or letting your hair down, you can find a way to incorporate some floral accents into your wedding day style. The flowers will add a whimsical touch to your fabulous hairstyle and perfect dress, making the day even more magical than you’d hoped.

Wedding In The Falls Eric & Lynnette Ebelink By Jewelanna Register
102
Eric and Lynnette met in July 2010, when the two of them were set up by their coworkers at McAlister’s Deli. Lynnette jokingly says that the couple resisted the set-up at first because she had a strict rule about never dating her coworkers. Flash forward a few months to October, and their coworkers had put together a large group to visit a haunted corn maze, which Eric and Lynnette agreed to. At the last minute, everyone else in the group canceled, leaving just Eric and Lynnette to go out on their first date. After that initial set-up, the rest is history.

wedding WEDDING Six years later, after months of wedding discussion, the couple found themselves celebrating Lynnette’s sister Kriston’s elopement in Saint Augustine. After a carriage ride to downtown Saint Augustine for dinner, their wedding photographer Holly Frazier suggested that they all go down by the water for additional photos. Once the bride and groom and family pictures were taken, Lynnette was told that she and Eric should get some solo photos
wedding as well. When she turned around for the photos, Eric was down on one knee proposing. Soon after, the wedding planning began. Lynnette says that when she was younger, she always imagined that she would have a big, traditional wedding, but as she grew up she decided that was not what she truly wanted. “At the end of the day, it was just me and Eric. I didn’t want to deal with any stress or have to appease everyone, so we knew we wanted to
elope and have it just be us,” Lynnette explains. “The date was the hardest part to pick because nothing really stood out to us at first. We ended up deciding on our anniversary date of November 2, which just happened to fall on a Thursday, in the middle of the week. We went up to the mountains a year ago for the first time and we loved it, so we just kind of stuck with that area and did research until we came across the Georgia waterfalls.”

wedding The couple explain that they wanted to be married at a huge waterfall, so when they stumbled across Minnehaha Falls, they knew it was the perfect location to elope. With its breathtaking view, their ceremony was everything the couple hoped for. The adventures of their wedding day will not be forgotten anytime soon either. Lynnette explains that the couple—along with their photographer Holly Frazier; Eric’s sister, Nicole; Nicole’s boyfriend, Brent; and the reverend—had to hike up to the ceremony location using steep mountain stairs. The day was filled with hangry moments and lots of hiking, but the end result was nothing short of what they imagined it would be. “It was perfect. The weather was great; the ceremony was quick and simple,” Lynnette says. “It was our dream wedding.” After their dream ceremony in front of the breathtaking waterfall, the couple celebrated their wedding with family and friends on Saturday, November 4, at Halpatter Brewing Company in Lake City. The reception location was anything but random, as the couple has a special tradition when they are traveling together. “We do this thing anytime we go somewhere new together. Eric loves craft beer, so we like to try all the new breweries we can and then we mark them off our list. It’s kind of our thing,” Lynnette explains. “So, as soon as Halpatter got approved for the building, we asked if we could have our party there. It worked out so great.” The couple had many wonderful surprises on their wedding weekend, like Eric giving Lynnette a beautiful diamond earring and necklace set for the ceremony day, Lynnette’s love letter to Eric, and their family being able to join them for the reception. Lynnette’s mother surprised the couple by flying from Greenland to the States for the first time in five years, and Lynnette’s sister was able to come from California to celebrate as well. The couple enjoyed being able to celebrate their love with all of their loved ones, from their relatives to their friends who feel like family. From the adventurous waterfall elopement to the opportunity to celebrate their marriage with their favorite people, the Ebelink couple are so happy to finally be husband and wife. And so the adventure of the rest of their lives together begins.

Once they write their name on their glass, let them fill it with what they like and use it all night. Cheers! 5 HIS AND HER FAVORITES If you both have a signature favorite snack or candy, consider packaging small bags full of your favorites for your guests to enjoy. Not only is it a fun way to personalize your favors for your guest, but it is also a great way to keep guests happy until dinner is served. 6 COFFEE BEANS Are you a coffee loving cople? Share your love for the caffeinated beverage with your wedding guests by giving them coffee beans or coffee ground to take home. They’ll be thinking and reminiscing on your perfect day while they sip their morning coffee.
7 MINT TO BE Whether you are giving out tic tacs or sticks of gum, this simple party favor could not be more adorable! Simply order your mints in bulk and tie a note around them that reads “we are MINT to be.” The cute saying is perfect for your big day, and your guests will appreciate the breath freshener after dinner. 8 LET LOVE GROW What’s better than giving your guests a permanent reminder of your wedding? Provide your guests with a package of flower seeds that they can grow in their backyard. If plants seed are not really your speed, consider getting tiny succulents for your guests to take home. 9 COOL KOOZIES Everyone loves a drink koozie, so consider designing one for your wedding guests. Include your names, the date, a fun graphic and any other information that you’d like. The guests will remember your special day for years to come when they use their koozie

getting engaged for guys:
How To Pop The Question By Joy Coleman
1
Make sure you’re both ready. A proposal will change your life forever. Decide if you’re doing it for the right reasons. If you can’t imagine your life without her in it, and if she makes everything in your life better and more meaningful, then propose. Don’t propose because you’re feeling pressured or you feel obligated. Don’t bypass asking her parents for permission to propose. Being a modern woman doesn’t change this.
2
Pick the right ring: Find out what she wants. If she’s open about telling you what she wants, casually ask her opinion. If she’s vocal about her engagement hopes, chances are she’s told her closest friend exactly what she wants. Ask that friend. If she’s picky, ask to see the type of ring she wants. Go online or walk in a neighborhood with a ring store. Ask if she wants to check out some rings for fun. Proposing with a family

heirloom is a beautiful gesture. Make sure she likes the setting. Don’t create an awkward situation where she can’t stand it but won’t hurt your feelings or offend your family.
3
Choose a time to ask. Strike a balance between being surprised and not completely throwing her off guard. Then again, timing isn’t everything. If you really want to ask her to be your wife, then go for it. Don’t lose time waiting
for the perfect time to propose. We’re always busy; things will always come up.
4
Pick a romantic, private, or special place. Don’t embarrass her by proposing somewhere public like a sporting event or a big party. If you want to do it at your favorite restaurant, get a seat in the back. It’s okay if a few people are around, but she should feel truly special and not under pressure to say yes.
5
Ask in a way she won’t forget: Tell her how absolutely lucky you are to have found her and how you want to spend the rest of your life with her. Always say, “Will you marry me?” on bended knee. Lindsay Lee and Jerry Koon’s first date was walking and talking along Alligator Lake. Fast forward: they’ve purchased a home on the same lake. “I wanted her under a stunning old oak near the water. Lindsay’s so beautiful. It was so romantic and private. Walking to the lake, we stopped under that oak. I went down on one knee and asked her to marry me, or have me as her husband. I mumbled, but I was on my knee. She was tickled to death, laughed, cried and said ‘Yes!’”

Color Palettes
With the stunning contrast between the dusty rose and the deep navy blue, this palette is perfect for a fall wedding. For the reception tables, consider navy blue tablecloths with dusty rose runners and rose gold accent pieces. Add in fairy lights and dusty rose-colored flowers for a magical look. Between the beautiful dusty rose bridesmaids’ dress options and the rose gold pops, this scheme is sure to impress your guests.

Natural & Neutral Greenery
Dusty Blue, Cool Grey & Muted Pink
This color palette is perfect for the simple couple. If you are looking for a way to bring in lots of lush greenery and natural, neutral tones, look no further. This color scheme pairs perfectly with beautiful calligraphy signs and lovely quotes. For flowers, considering going simple and whimsical with a large bouquet of greenery with white accent flowers. Utilizing a neutral color scheme also gives you the perfect excuse to give your bridesmaids the ability to customize their dress styles for a mismatched, yet cohesive, bridal party vibe.
Perfect for a winter wedding, this color palette is all the rage for simplistic elegance. Ditch the traditional black tux look and opt for a cool grey suit and dusty blue tie combo for the groomsmen. For the bridal party, consider dusty blue dresses in a lightweight material. As for centerpieces and reception dĂŠcor, pair your dusty blue tablecloths with muted pink flowers and greenery.

Justin & Kailee
Two Are Better Than One
The beginning of Justin and Kailee Markham’s love story takes us back to 2008 when the couple was paired up in a wedding party where they met for the first time. Flash forward to 2014, and the couple meets again and catches up on the past six years of their lives. After that first date, the rest is history. After a year of dating, the couple decided they wanted some professional images to celebrate their first year together. Kailee explained that during the shoot, their photographer instructed her to pose with her back to Justin, and when she turned around for the next shot, Justin was down on one knee proposing, and she said yes! After a busy year of wedding planning, their big day finally arrived. Combining his country style and love of the outdoors and her whimsical and romantic style, their wedding was nothing short of perfect. With lanterns and flowers mixed in with antlers, the vibe was very whimsical and rustic, and exactly what the couple dreamed about. Their wedding day was completely focused in faith, with the couple’s pastor Rick Wake sharing the story of the unity cord with the guests. Justin and Kailee braided the cord together during the ceremony, signifying that a marriage takes three: a husband, a wife and God at the center. In addition to the unity cord, the couple expressed the importance of prayer on their wedding day. When it comes to the best part of the day, both Justin and Kailee spoke about the moment that Kailee walked down the aisle for the first time. They opted for a more traditional moment rather than a first look, so as Kailee came from the barn and hit the double doors set up for the ceremony, Justin turned around to see her for the first time all day. While the entire day was like a dream, this very special moment was at the top of both of their lists. Their wedding day was about more than just celebrating their love with each other, it was also about sharing that love with their friends and family. The Markham expressed how blessed they felt to have 118 had so many loved ones by their side on their day. “We appreciate the love and support we’ve gotten

from our friends and family so much,” Kailee expressed. “Thank you to all of those who helped make our day so special.” Justin and Kailee Markham officially became husband and wife on Oct. 14, 2017, and thus their journey into the rest of their lives together began.

HOW TO GET
ORGANIZED IN
2018
By Sandy Thompson Professional organizer Organize Me Happy
O
rganizing allows you to maximize your productivity. It saves you time and money, and helps to reduce stress. Save time by quickly being able to locate and take action on your daily tasks or project. Save money by maximizing your dollar with one purchase, instead of spending more money to purchase replacements for lost or misplaced goods. Reduce stress, agitation and frustration by having the ability to quickly find items needed for your daily activities.
The best way to leap into an organized life, is to create a goal list. This list will help you to stay on task and work as a reminder to why you needed to take the first step in organizing. Additionally, it will provide a sense of accomplishment and encouragement in your future organizing projects. List out what areas of your life are causing you the most stress, what areas just bother you or seem harder than necessary. Then, create a set of rules to follow. Some examples are:
1 One in, one out only clothes you have worn in the last two 2 Keep years
3 Keep only books you know you will read again Keep only kitchen utensils you have used in the
4 past year
only three months of monthly magazines and 5 Keep three weeks of weekly magazines
6
Only keep a maximum of three current projects on your desk at one time

Remember, keep your goals achievable. You will find encouragement and the drive to continue to make progress by the achievement of realistic goals. Little steps forward are still moving you forward! Next, overcome procrastination by just getting started. Take one step at a time, create deadlines for your goals, and remember: it does not need to be perfect, just functional for you. Now, time to get started! Define your areas based on the way you utilize your space. Decide what you will use the area for, how do you function in the area? Then remove items that do not belong based on your definition of space usage. Remove any broken items and duplicates of items that serve the same purpose. There are always others that can benefit from your generosity of donations. Instead of thinking you are trashing or disposing of an item, think of it as giving it a new home and to someone who will get KEEP YOUR GOALS ACHIEVABLE. YOU WILL FIND more use out ENCOURAGEMENT AND THE DRIVE TO CONTINUE of it. TO MAKE PROGRESS BY THE ACHIEVEMENT OF You are now ready to redesign REALISTIC GOALS. your new, fresh space for how you plan to function. This is your space and your rules. You can use post-it notes to temporarily define the usage of drawers, cabinets and containers. This will help the flow of your movement as you adapt to the new organized area and help keep you on track in the usage of the space. Understand and accept there will be times of “backsliding” or reverting to an unorganized environment. Allow yourself to acknowledge things may have “fallen apart,” then encourage and take pride in your abilities to again gain control. “You did it once, you can do it again!” As a professional organizer, my goal is to simplify your life and to enable you to thrive. The goal is not to be “perfect,” but to teach, encourage and provide guidance to a happier you!
New Year
Resolve to
Change
- JUST ONE THING Article by Joy Coleman
H
ere’s something you might be interested in: Consider resolving to spend more time in the New Year taking care of yourself. Choose one of your character features—one feature only—and focus on improving that for the next twelve months. That’s all. Jill Adams, CFO, COO, Lake City Medical Center, recently encouraged listeners at a leadership presentation to focus on one thing you want to change in your life to be a more authentic individual. “If you’re not happy with your life, then make the opportunity, embrace the responsibility, to change. Focus on only one thing during the next year and find free resources to help you change.” She challenged to “find your genuine self and stop faking who you are. When we free ourselves from a ‘faked’ behavior, we find a remarkable freedom to be who we truly are. Those whom we live and work with would rather follow a real person than a perfect person. A real leader leads herself well, then leads others.
“THE NEW YEAR IS AN EXCELLENT TIME TO REFLECT AND FOCUS ON THE YEAR AHEAD. CRAIG GROESCHEL SUGGESTS SELECTING ONE NEW HABIT FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR. STAY FOCUSED ON THIS ONE NEW HABIT. THIS IS KEY TO KEEPING A NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION!” -JILL ADAMS
FIRST THINGS FIRST: ASSESS YOURSELF
New Year,
NewYou
Choose what kind of employee, spouse, parent, grandparent, mentor, or person you would like to be. This is always a choice: so, choose! This applies to lifestyle, finances, health, stress, or any major area in your life. What do you want to change? If you’re not very good at self-assessment, ask someone you trust what one thing they would change about you. When asking the question, there are a few guidelines to consider: Please don’t excuse your behavior, don’t rationalize, and don’t try to explain. Just listen. And be kind when your conversation is finished by thanking that person for their thoughts, opinion, and guidance. After all, you asked, and they took a risk in answering. Our path in life always boils down to our choices. Identify and write one thing YOU will do differently starting the date you choose. Start on that date practicing that change for one year. Focus on it. Realize and name how the change will help. With a personal change, it’s about understanding why we do something and learning the emotions surrounding it. The stronger I feel the problem, the more I’ll work to change it. Set goals that require a personal stretch—get out of your comfort zone. But set goals that can be reached. Don’t go overboard and set impossible goals. Instead, make small, sustainable changes in your daily routine and build on each day’s success. Setting and tracking small, achievable, weekly goals is the best way to change a long-term habit. Belief is a key part of the successful change. To modify a habit, decide to change it. Realize you have control and become self-aware and focused to use it. Habits are easier to create or change if you have support. Enlist friends to help you stick to your goals.
