Tuning in across the world It’s breakfast time in England. Phyllis is listening to her transistor radio, the same radio she’s had for 30 years. The sound is bad, so Phyllis turns up the volume. She looks at the display but she can’t read it because her eyes aren’t good. Phyllis’ son wants to get her a DAB radio, but she thinks it’s too modern for her. He says the display is clearer and there are hundreds of channels. But all Phyllis wants is the news. She extends the radio’s aerial. The sound improves slightly. In Denmark, Jens is looking at internet radio websites on his computer. There’s an interesting podcast about music. Jens can’t listen to it now because he’s late for school. He plugs his mp3 player into the computer’s USB port and downloads the podcast – he’ll listen to it later. On the bus Jens tunes into a music station on his mp3 player. He’s listening to the latest music. Jens likes to know what’s new. Amina is proud of her new radio. A lot of women in her community in Somalia have received free wind-up radios. They don’t need batteries so they’re free to use. Like many women in her region, Amina hasn’t had an education, but now she can listen to programmes that teach her about health and women’s rights. At home Amina isn’t allowed to use her husband’s radio. But now, he isn’t allowed to use hers!
