With a BSc Honours in Civil Engineering from Nottingham University, and a Post Graduate Certificate of Education, Simon became department deputy with responsibility for curriculum development in Secondary School Education.
Michael qualified as an architect in 1997 joining RIBA a year later and going on to work as Lead Architect on a number of multi-million pound PFI projects. From initial concept through to project completion Michael was responsible for the design development, project running and management of the design team. In fact, Michael’s architectural experience covers many diverse sectors from schools, offices and retail to day nurseries and community centres.
Kam brings a wide spectrum of technical skills to Leeds College of Building ranging from Civil Engineering to Structural Engineering. Throughout his career he has worked on high profile major UK projects as a design engineer and consultant. Prior to that his work included projects in Dubai as well as MoD projects in the UK and educational sector and health sector builds.
Before joining LCB, Joanna carved out an 18 year career working and studying in higher education. For almost 10 years she worked as a technician and visiting lecturer in the Geography and Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Hertfordshire.
Chris was awarded an honours degree in Architecture in 1982, getting his Master’s degree in Architecture in 1985 and becoming a member of RIBA two years later. He began his career as an architect before spending 25 years as a Consultant Property Developer in both large and small practices.
Vicky has over 20 years experience in the Civil Engineering industry. During that time she has worked as a Technician at Haiste & Partners, a Graduate Engineer for Babtie Group and a Project Manager for the Environment Agency.
Simon then moved into strategic roles within the education sector, working with employers and training providers to develop training programmes and bespoke learning initiatives. At LCB he has returned to the role of lecturer. His research interests include Transition to Management, Management Development and his subject specialisms are Civil Engineering Hydraulics, Science and Materials and Mathematics. Simon believes there is nothing more rewarding than the opportunity to inspire and motivate students, whatever their age or stage of learning. He commented, “Every student has different aspirations and goals, to play a part in them reaching their true potential is the most satisfying job you can have.”

Michael enjoyed his own student days and wanted to experience the learning environment from a lecturer’s perspective, so he moved into teaching. Since then he has been able to pass on the wealth of knowledge and expertise he gained as an architect.
Specifically interested in researching the analytical and experimental methods for understanding post-tensioned slab mechanics, Kam’s love of teaching comes from a desire to share his wide technical knowledge and guide a new generation of students whilst helping them capitalise on career opportunities.
Although Michael’s key area of expertise is Sustainable Architecture his interests mean he can impart wider industry knowledge of Environmentally Responsive Design and Modern Methods of Construction.
Kam’s specialist subject is technical content for structural engineering with further teaching in engineering mathematics having lectured on Hydraulics, Geology and Geotechnics as part of his professional teaching career.

In that time she taught across a range of subjects and specialised in transport geography, advancing her studies with an MSc in Transport Planning and a 3 year ESRC funded PhD studentship, both at the University of Leeds. Joanna’s research interests lay in the field of transport equity and ensuring that transport is accessible and inclusive. She is passionate about teaching young people and helping them achieve their full potential. Becoming a lecturer in transport planning at LCB has turned out to be her dream job.
In 2009 Chris started teaching part-time, tutoring the CIOB night time courses before making the decision to focus more of his time on teaching. Chris has now obtained his Certificate in Education and has been teaching full-time for 3 years, specialising in design as a crucial part of the building process. His passion for art and architecture has taken him around the world, inspiring many of his large abstract canvases and lecture topics.
Now a lecturer at Leeds College of Building, Vicky teaches both further and higher education students. Vicky is also a qualified NVQ Assessor and heavily involved with Advanced Technical Apprenticeships and Higher Apprenticeships. As a Chartered Civil Engineer, she is dedicated to raising awareness of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and encourages her students to apply for Quest Scholarships and become student Members of the ICE. She is also passionate about students achieving their EngTech professional qualifications. Vicky is also an ICE Reviewer and a member of the Quest Committee.

British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) BIFM is the professional body for facilities management. They promote excellence in facilities management for the benefit of practitioners, the economy and society.
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) CIOB is at the heart of a management career in construction. They are the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership.
Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) CIHT is a learned society concerned specifically with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of land-based transport systems and infrastructure.
Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) IHE is the UK’s only national professional institute which puts specialist highway and traffic practitioners first. They help engineers achieve and maintain the highest levels of professional competence. IHE is run by, and for, engineers, technicians and allied professionals.

The city that’s going places Fact: There are more listed buildings in Leeds than in any other English city outside London. Growth: £4.4 billion has been invested in commercial property development in Leeds over the last 10 years and a further £7.3 billion of projects are under construction or in the pipeline. Pioneering: Leeds is the UK’s fastest growing city and the main driver of a city region with a £64.6 billion economy, a combined population of 3 million and a workforce of 1.37 million. Leeds is extremely student-focused and has one of the biggest student populations in Europe. Over 65,000 students flow into the city each year bringing an inspiring diverse mix of individuals. As a commercially well-connected city, Leeds is also the perfect place to progress from student to professional.
Leeds is well known for its culture, famous in the fields of art, architecture, music, sport, film and television, with Yorkshire’s base for BBC, ITV and regional newspapers right in the heart of town. Leeds also plays host to the Leeds West Indian Carnival, the longest running West Indian Carnival in Europe. The food and drink city Leeds is packed with fabulous bars, restaurants, cafés and street food spots, which means you’re never far from lunch! Many have special deals for students or early-bird menus, ideal for a student budget. Street food is big news in Leeds, with the launch of Trinity Kitchen and the World Feast, which takes over the city once a month. Regular ‘Street Feast’ events take place at bars around the city. With so much on offer, you’ll never have to eat the same thing twice.

5 hot spots to check out 1. Hyde Park Picture House - Built 1914, survived two world wars and decades of urban development. 2. Call Lane – all you need slap bang in the centre of town, restaurants, cocktail bars, vintage clothes shops and clubs. 3. Tribe Records - One of the last independent record shops in the city, offering clothing and art supplies alongside records. 4. The Otley Run - At 2 miles and 18 pubs the Otley Run was historically a stretch of Tetley pubs. It now starts in Headingley and runs the length of the A660 into the centre of Leeds a real student rite of passage. Don’t forget your fancy dress. 5. Get stuck into a quiz – test your knowledge whilst sinking a beer at one of the many bars and pubs, come up trumps at The Hops and win a gallon of beer.
For the UK’s fourth largest city, Leeds is compact and perfectly formed. You can walk from one side of the city centre to the other within half an hour, past places to eat, shop and get your culture fix. BEING AN LCB STUDENT
CUTTING EDGE LEARNING FACILITIES
I have really enjoyed my experience at Leeds College of Building, 7 years in total. From 2004 to 2008 I completed a Level 3 Heating and Ventilation Apprenticeship before returning in 2014 to complete a Higher Apprenticeship in Facilities Management.
At LCB we have state-of-the-art learning equipment and facilities including; CAD and Revit software, Conquest for estimating and quantity surveying and Topcon total stations for surveying. We also have a well-stocked library and fully fitted science lab equipped for concrete testing and crushing. Plus, a brand new STEM Centre is currently being built as part of phase 2 of our College expansion project.
The Facilities Management Higher Apprenticeship programme enabled me to combine a HNC and a HND in Building Services Engineering with level 4 and 5 diplomas in Facilities Management. In doing so I built on my trade background and experience and enhanced my career development giving me the knowledge and skills to progress to my current role as a Technical Services Manager. LCB has given me fantastic on the job experience alongside the qualifications that have helped my career progression. I enjoy the challenges that Facilities Management provides. There’s a wide variety of work and no two days are the same.
The support that I have received from College lecturers is brilliant and the teaching is second to none. With hard work, I was awarded Facilities Management Apprentice of the Year in 2016 and achieved distinction grades in all HNC and HND modules. The College facilities are great too and coupled with the quality of teaching on offer this is the reason why Leeds College of Building is such a well respected teaching facility and one that I would recommend to everyone.
Equipment on site is the same equipment used by professionals in the building and construction industry. LCB students regularly work with thermal imaging equipment, heat exchanger supply units, Tubular Heat Exchangers, Plate Heat Exchangers and Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers. It’s all part of our aim to produce students who are ready for industry leading roles.
I fully appreciate being given the chance to develop my career and look forward to moving onto Leeds Beckett University to start the Building Services Topup Degree. Over the next decade UK industry growth means millions of new technical and professional skilled workers will be called upon to fill a wealth of new construction and building roles. The government has identified apprenticeships as being the key to producing these individuals. In response, a crucial government initiative, the Apprenticeship Levy, will help fund 3 million new apprenticeships by 2020.
The unique regeneration of the Kirkstall Forge site, just 2.5 miles from Leeds City Centre, has seen the launch of a brand new skills initiative called Forging Futures Campus. This is a pioneering new skills campus with the aim of getting people into construction. Delivered by CEG through an on-site co-ordinator in collaboration with Leeds College of Building, Wates, Leeds City Council and BARCA there is no other learning based project like it. The apprenticeship programme offers unique
In May 2017 the Apprenticeship Levy was launched. It is a new Government training levy to fund apprenticeships and it will affect employers with a wage bill over £3million. The levy is available to spend on apprenticeship training and not on wages and it is equal to 0.5% of the employer’s total wage bill.

Keep learning, start earning A higher apprenticeship or degree apprenticeship combine a work based learning programme with a nationally recognised qualification, from level 4 to level 6. They offer different routes into professions that are traditionally filled by graduates. At LCB we offer higher apprenticeships leading to careers in a number of disciplines, including building services engineering, civil engineering, construction management, facilities management, maintenance, planning & surveying.

The projects give our students unique opportunities to explore new technologies, construction techniques and materials in order to make more informed career choices. These diverse experiences have been fundamental in helping our students develop the confidence to offer valuable contributions to projects in other countries, sharing their experiences of studying and working in construction in different cultures, languages and climates. For 25 years Leeds College of Building have been working in partnership with Berufskolleg Ost der Stadt Essen in Germany. Our students regularly take part in international exchange programmes, learning about the supply chain, manufacturing process and modern methods of construction on an international scale. These exchanges have given our students an educated view of the career opportunities throughout Europe, helping them forge links with potential employers and demonstrate their skills and aptitude via rewarding work placements. The College has also worked with partners in Portugal, Holland, France and Russia.

QUEST Scholarships for 5 Engineering Apprentices
Award winning Female Apprentice
A group of LCB Civil Engineering apprentices have been awarded coveted scholarships from The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and The Queen’s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST) Committee.
Becky Munro, an award winning Engineering Apprentice from Scarborough became the 50th student at Leeds College of Building to pass the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Technician Professional Review, earning herself a globally recognised accreditation.
The £1,500 QUEST scholarships are a benchmark of excellence. They recognise talented engineers of the future who demonstrate their current abilities and future potential.
Becky, a Junior Technician Permanent Way Engineer at Mott MacDonald York, achieved the highest grade possible for her BTEC Level 3 Diploma and completed her NVQ a year early before progressing onto the Higher Apprenticeship. She also won the ‘Best Apprentice under 25’, at the Women in Construction Awards before claiming further award success by winning BTEC Apprentice of the Year.
Simon Ashburn working for SJG Temporary Works Ltd, Samuel Hirst from Highways England and Stuart Seaton, Hana Sulaiman and Emma Worthington all from Tata Steel Projects, were judged on their technical engineering capabilities, leadership skills, ambition and ability to use their initiative to deliver sustainable engineering solutions.

Advanced Learner Loans
Disabled Students Allowance
Anyone aged 19 or over and living in the UK* will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for a qualification between level 3 and level 6 (excluding HNCs/HNDs and Higher Apprenticeships). It’s easy to apply and the loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks. What’s more, the loan goes straight to the College to pay for your fees and you don’t pay anything back until your income is over £21,000 per year.
If you have a disability, learning difficulty or mental health condition that impacts on your learning you could be eligible for additional help. This could be help with the cost of special equipment, help with your wellbeing or a basic allowance for learning support. Typically those enrolling on the programme will have worked in a management role for 5 years. However, the programme is also suitable for a wide range of technical and specialist professionals working in the construction industry. The programme is made up of 4 modules designed to give students the specialist knowledge and skills required to manage construction projects effectively. The modules are delivered through approved providers. Assessment is made via an ‘open book’ exam which is set online by the CIOB and carried out at the end of the programme.
