Special Appeal Brings Hope - Healing - Determination to Win Neighborhood To Christ What Satan tried to stop - God Blessed!! Last Wednesday LCC sent out a special appeal to help Pastor Kalonji who was robbed and beaten while taking some items to a member in Chicago. By the overwhelming Christian support of so many - Pastor Kalonji is even more determined to serve his church community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ! THANK YOU for MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Dear Tim, I write to thank Lutheran Church Charities for sharing with the brothers and sisters in the Lord

about my misfortune of Monday, September 28 and the support you have raised. God has truly worked through this tragedy to show me and my family His unfailing love for us. I have received a lot of phone calls, email and text messages, cards and personal visits as a result of the special appeal letter you sent out. And the financial donation to me and my congregation, personally delivered today by LCC's new Director of Missions and Outreach, Pete Imlah, could not speak louder about the love of the brothers and sisters in the Lord for me and their support of the ministry at Zion. I truly thank everyone for the many ways through which you have expressed your love and support to me. My family and I still need your prayers as we recover from both injuries and the shock from me being robbed at gun-point. As for my recovery, I am doing fine. I had the staples removed from the cut on my head yesterday (Monday, October 5) and also was in court for the preliminary hearing by the judge. The seventeen years old boy who robbed me was brought to court from jail; it was truly sad to see him smile during the hearing as though he truly did not care about what he did to me and about his being incarcerated. I would like to end by thanking LCC, Dianna Bonfield and volunteers for transporting the computer tables and office furniture from Lisle, Illinois, and delivering them to Zion's Community Center when I could not do it last Wednesday. THANK YOU and GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU! Pastor StĂŠphane Kalonji Zion Lutheran Church (9901 S. Winston Avenue, Chicago)

Original Appeal: Late Monday (Sept. 28) night, Rev. Stephane Kalonji at Zion Lutheran Church in Chicago was beaten and robbed at gunpoint while he was delivering food and other needed items to one of his members. He suffered head injuries that required hospitalization and 9 staples in his head. I talked with Pastor Kalonji a few minutes ago and he is at home recovering. He lost money, his credit cards, drivers license and other items. His estimated loss, with hospital bills and all, is around $1000. Pastor Kalonji was scheduled to pick up furniture from a corporate donor yesterday through Lutheran Church Charities but because of his injuries was not able to make it. LCC has arranged volunteers and rented a truck to take care of that today. The donated items are being used for the outreach center that Zion has started. Pastor Kalonji is as determined as ever for the need for outreach with the Gospel to his neighborhood and is more motivated now than ever to proceed forward. Click here to donate to the Rev. Homeless Mother and Daughter in Need of $1,200 for Housing Request from Pastor David Barber and Thomas Amato, Chairman Board of Elders, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenview, Illinois We are working with a family, Tina (about 40 years old) and her mother Carla (names changed, about 70 years old), who are living in their car at a north suburban Chicago shopping center and nearby office park parking lot. Their dog Lucky, a miniature American Eskimo, lives in the car with them.

How To Support LCC

Prayer Wall Post a prayer, or pray for others!

They have been living in their car since September 2008. Right now they are living off of Carla's social security check to buy food (in rationed amounts), gas for their car and to pay for doing laundry and take daily showers and buying other necessities. Both Tina and her mom appear undernourished. They returned to their hometown of Chicago about a year ago after having lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area for eight years. They lost their home in foreclosure in 2008. Tina and her mom have been resourceful when it comes to trying to get out of their present situation. However, without a home address she is having a hard time getting a job. Prospective employers are put off when she tells them that she lives in her car. Initially, members of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glenview, put some gas in their car and gave them a food gift card. Immanuel's objective in helping Tina has been to get them into housing before the weather turns much colder. Tina has found a home to share in an outlying community to the Chicago suburbs. However, Tina and Carla do not yet have the funds for a security deposit and first month's rent. They also need money for a brake job on their car.

LCC's Prayer Wall

Immanuel Lutheran Church leadership has committed to fund the first month's rent ($500) for the house they want share. Tina is seeking an additional $500 for the security deposit and $450 to get the brakes on their car repaired. (They will also need tires for the car to make it through the winter.) Any assistance for Tina and Carla would be a tremendous blessing to them as they put their lives back together. To donate

Reaching Out to Your Community with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ in Ways that Don't Cost Money! We are in hard economic times. "Times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us! The door is wide open for the Church to be the Church. Jesus showed us by his life that we are to be the church that "Does Feet" (John 13). People say that they would "do" evangelism, they would reach out to people in need, but their church simply does not have the money right now to do it, things are tight! Dear Christian brothers and sisters, it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example. If you would like a staff member of LCC to come out and share ways for you and your church to reach your members and community - without money - contact us at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org We would be more than happy to come and work with you! By the way, we can even bring our K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs with us. This also will NOT cost you!

"When I was in prison..." Mathew 25:36 Request from Karen Hardecopf, Parish Nurse, Lay Minister, Cross Lutheran, Yorkville As I serve as a Parish Nurse I am always in awe of how God allows me to be a part of people's lives. Cross Lutheran's Parish Nursing / Care Ministries' purpose statement is "Putting Jesus' love for us and for Him into action caring for His people through connecting hearts because we value His people. 'Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth'. I John 3:18" God has loved us so much and it is with His Love that I serve as a Parish Nurse. Life's journey for me and people I serve can be challenging. We each have decisions to make every day. There is often no quick fix. A young family I've known for a number of years had been on their own journey. Elizabeth and her husband had 'ups and downs', tragedies and struggles. Elizabeth is now in prison as a result of crimes that she committed. We've been communicating through letters and I was privileged to be able to travel to a state prison to visit with her. To be able to look into her eyes and share God's unconditional love was an overwhelming blessing for me. I have tears in my eyes today as I recall her words: "Karen, the bible verse that says 'when I was in prison, you came to visit me' is so alive right now. You have no idea what your personal visit means to me." Elizabeth has known me a long time and knew that it was out of my 'comfort zone' to walk into a prison. But, I was led to go as God's servant. I knew in my heart that He wanted me there. I knew God would protect me. Before I set foot in the door I stopped and prayed - for the Holy Spirit to guide my words and actions and that God would be glorified. Just today I received a call from Elizabeth's husband who said that she might be released early as part of the state's budgeting situation. Their two little children have been "visiting" monthly with their Mom via a video communication program. Because of other factors Elizabeth's husband and family have not seen her in person throughout her incarceration. Elizabeth is coming home to her family who, because of finances, had to move recently from their rented house to a two bedroom apartment which they also share with an extended family member. The space will be crowded along with each having their own expectation of their reunited family dynamics. Elizabeth has told me in her letters that she has spent many hours in the Word while in prison. She wants to diligently continue on this spiritual journey but is concerned about her faithfulness. Her husband told me that he is excited and nervous at the same time of the prospect of being reunited. Now I am asking God to be with this family - to give them time, patience and His unconditional love as they reunite. If God leads you to share some encouraging words to Elizabeth and her husband I would be honored to pass them along. You may email them to me at khardecopf@hiscross.org In His service, Karen Hardecopf, RN Parish Nurse, Lay Minister Cross Lutheran Church, Yorkville

UPDATE - $3,000 raised, $1,000 still needed! Support for Mission Trip to Kenya Request from Peter Imlah, Director of Mission and Outreach, Lutheran Church Charities Dear Friends in Christ, I have been given an opportunity to join with Salem Lutheran Church, Tomball, Texas (salem4u.com) on a mission trip to provide a prescription eyeglass clinic to people in need in Kenya, Africa, November 12-22 2009. I am really excited about this opportunity to minister in Kenya. During Salem's last trip to Kenya in May they were able to serve and share the Gospel Message with more than 15,000 people at 5 different locations! The November trip will cost me just over $3,500 (not including passport and shots), with the biggest portion coming from airfare. This is a big number, but I believe our God is bigger than that hurdle. Any support would be appreciated. I would love the opportunity to partner with you in this endeavor. If I have 50-100 people partner with me I would get where I need to be quite easily (many hands make for light work). If you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to email me at pete@lutheranchurchcharities.org I believe that the Lord speaks to us through our brothers and sisters in Christ and I would appreciate your input. Your Donations Make A Difference Corporate Donation Benefits Many Ministries On Wednesday, September 30 LCC coordinated the pick-up of a corporate donation of household and office furniture from Telcordia in Lisle. Our LCC volunteers helped to stage and load donations from Telcordia on Tuesday September 29th. The donation touched the lives of people at Zion Lutheran Church, Chicago; POBLO Ministries; Immanuel Lutheran Church and School Palatine; Lutheran Child and Family Services and Lutheran Church Charities. LCC volunteers (left to right) Joe Linck, Tom Bizjack, Jeremiah Baechler & Helmut Mueller picked up a corporate donation of household furniture and office furniture for POBLO and delivered it to St John Lutheran Church, Lombard where Jeremiah Baechler, a full time volunteer missionary at large, is the newest part of the volunteer staff assisting Hicham Chehab with ministry to Muslims. St. John, Lombard provides office space for Jeremiah. After making the drop off for POBLO the volunteers made a stop at the Seegers Center where they dropped off new conference tables for the conference room and a smaller conference table and 6 arm chairs for LCFS-Adoptions. LCC Volunteers Tom Bizjack and Joe Linick drove to Zion Lutheran Church on 99th & Winston to meet up with Pastor Stephane Kalonji and his wife Michelle,(Standing Al Kennedy President of the congregation in front of Pastor Kalonji) and Zion member Sedrick to unload computer desks, 8 ft tables and chairs. Feeding Children in Haiti LCC received the following e-mail from John

Hall, President of Trinity/Hope in

Lebanon, Tennessee. Trinity/Hope has been working for the last 10 years to provide a noon meal for the children in 53 Christian Schools in 7 geographic districts. Thank you to all who have supported the ministries in Haiti. Your generous donations continue to bring the Hope and Compassion of Christ to the children and their families. Dear friends, Sometimes you get an email that you just have to share. Here is one such email. It is to Keith Logan (the feeding program administrator for Jeremie) and me. It is from Lophane Laurent, our feeding program manager for all of Haiti. It is a summary of his trip to the area around Jeremie (a particularly distant and poor section of Haiti where we have just started the first feeding programs in the area for four schools.) Pastor Isaac is the ordained Lutheran Pastor who leads the district as its president and Popo is our feeding program director for the area. Below is the section pertaining to the start of this program as written by Lophane.

Dear Brothers, Peace and Grace to you from our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. How are you doing? How are your families? Hope you are well with God and that the same for my family. Brothers, this district is very far, but, when I saw the children, for me it not far because there is many children there who suffer hungry. In all schools I visited all the children where happy to see and they sung for me like welcome Trinity/Hope. Brothers I was surprised to saw how poor the people are who live there. In each school I went I was sad to see the children, most of them came to school because they know in this school they can find something to eat. I have a child who came to me and aid: Mr. the manager, when Pastor Isaac and Popo told us in September we are going to eat we think this is a dream, but in Jeremie this is the first we go to school at the beginning of the school year just to see if yes there is a program in our school, when we came to school we saw there is something in the kitchen we said this is a dream, because there is many organization when they came here in Jeremie they said they will send food for us, it was not true, this is the reason why when they told us we are going to eat to this year, we said this is a joke, but now Trinity/HOPE changes everything, we see it's not a dream, it's true, since September 7th, we started feeding by one of the best and good organization in Haiti. Brothers, I can tell you [even] I was surprised to see how the program make a big impact in children's life. You couldn't imagine this, the teachers too told me, Mr. the Manager, know we are going to teach well because THERE IS FOOD at school.

Some of you support these four schools specifically but most give so the children in other areas are fed as well, but wherever your gift is directed, the message of what you are providing for all of these children is the same. Your gifts give them hope like they have never dared to have and witness in a mighty way of the HOPE eternal!

Blessings, John [Click to contribute to the Food For Haiti Fund]

Can You Help LCC Find Free Warehouse Storage For Our Ongoing Ministry? In order to be able to respond to disasters swiftly, it is imperative that we operate in a state of preparedness. To be able to do that, it is important that we have our vehicles and equipment stored in a location and environment that will enable us to move quickly. For the other parts of our ministry, we need: ●

● ●

Work space for our volunteers that is a climate controlled environment Has short term storage space for donations till they can be picked up in a few days. A space large enough where we can drive in and store our Disaster response RV and trailers for immediate DEPLOYMENT. A cargo bay allowing us the ability to load semi-trailers would also be nice and useful feature.

If you know of someone who owns or has available warehouse space that isn't being currently used, please contact Tim Hetzner at Lutheran Church Charities. We understand that use of the warehouse would not be permanent and that the owner would have the full rights to regain their facility if it was to be rented or sold. LCC would carry the insurance on the space we are using. Please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at (866) 455-6466 if you know of someone. This would be a tremendous Help in meeting the increased demands LCC faces. Help us to continue to - by the Grace of God - Make A Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom!

Ethnic Ministry in Need of Clothing and Washing Machine Request from Rev. Jean Bingue, Bethesda Lutheran Church, Chicago Dear LCC, I am writing you today to ask for your help. I am looking for some men's, women's and children's clothing for those members of our congregation who are in need. As you know, we have several members who have recently arrived here in the Chicago area with just the clothes on their backs. They are in desperate need. In particular, we are looking for men's suits size 46 x 32, 44 x 32, men's shirts size 2X and 1X. Women's sizes 12, 14, and 16. Children's sizes from 6X to 14. The cold air of the winter months is rapidly approaching and they will also be in need of coats, hats and gloves. Men's sizes 46 and 44. Women's sizes 12, 14 and 16. Children's sizes from 6X to 14. Because money is at a premium for these people, they cannot afford to go to a Laundromat to wash the items they do have. It is for that reason that we are looking for a washing machine to set up for use by the members of the congregation. I truly appreciate your help in getting these items. I hope we will be able to provide something to these people. You always come through for us. If you have items to donate contact Dianna Bonfield at 866-455-6466 or e-mail LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org

UPDATE - A Laborer in the Kingdom Request from POBLO Missionary Hicham Chehab

Read Jeremiah's Story! Read about the Salam Arabic Lutheran Mission! Dear LCC, God has provided a brother who wants to help me, as much as he can, with our ministry. He is from California, and is currently staying at my house. His name is Jeremiah Baechler (pictured), age 35. I first met him at Concordia, Indiana. Jeremiah is looking for a room with a bathroom, ideally at a parsonage or something like this with a family, but with a separate door that gives him the ability to move in and out without disturbing anyone. He is looking in the communities of Roselle, Lombard, Wheaton, Addison, Glen Ellyn, Villa Park, Carol Stream, Hanover Park, Schaumburg, or within a ten mile radius of Lombard. If anyone has a room for Jeremiah they can contact me at hicham.chehab@gmail.com Please consider a monetary gift to assist in supporting Jermemiah and his ministry through Salam Arabic Missions in Lombard - Click Here to Donate In God's Peace, Hicham

Popcorn Maker Needed Request from Bethel Family Programs, Humboldt Park Neighborhood, Chicago Bethel Family Programs has been growing exponentially-fall programs have overflowed to waitlists!-and we're so grateful for all God is doing. There's one particular story that I want to write to LCC about in particular: Taste 4 Change. Taste 4 Change is a concession stand in our gym launched by our teens on Chicago's west side. This summer, Taste 4 Change made a huge impact in these teens' lives and skills. They hadn't realized how important basic addition was until it was their profits they were adding! Budgeting, communication, recordkeeping, and basic job readiness were all taught in practical, real-life lessons. One of their biggest lessons was that pre-packaged snacks don't earn much profit and are easily lost to shoplifters. So we renovated our menu for fall: popcorn and mixable Gatorade. We're on a search now for a movie-style popcorn maker to make this wise business decision (and health decision!) possible. We'd sincerely appreciate it if anyone with a popcorn maker could donate it to us! The donors would receive the undying gratitude of Taste 4 Change youth, who would make them popcorn any time! If you have a popcorn maker to donate, please contact LCC at (866) 455-6466 or LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org

If you can donate towards the purchase of a new popcorn maker ($140 needed) for this ministry, please donate here.

Thanksgiving Baskets for Mobile Alabama Request from Pastor Tillahun Menedo, Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama Again this year the Evangelism Committee at Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile is attempting to serve the needs within our own congregation and the local community, especially at this time of the year and at this critical time in our economy. We are planning to construct 6 baskets and anticipate the cost of each basket to be about $40.00. Visitor from Haiti Available for Temporary Work Request from Tim Kaufman, Director of Student Ministry, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Palatine Lionel Legoute has served as our translator on our mission trips to Les Cayes, Haiti the past couple of years. He is in his mid-30's and will be staying in the Palatine-area for a few weeks between Sept. 19-October 29. He has a real love for the Lord and is very liked by our teams. He will spend some time with me learning about the work of the church here in the states and how we do "church" at Prince of Peace. However, it would also be good for him to earn some money that he can use for his family back in Haiti. Due to the nature of his visa and his short time here, he would only be able to pick up odd jobs. He is very open to doing anything, so the type of job isn't in question. He'll be staying in Palatine with members of Prince of Peace and we could get him to places to work as necessary. If you have any work for Lionel please contact me at the church office 847-359-3451 ext.116 or email tim@reachgrowserve.org

LCC Offers Lutheran Early Response Team Training Tim Hetzner to Lead Training Session In order to better manage these volunteers and resources, FEMA is currently finalizing a guideline on credentialing volunteers for largescale disasters. Ethiopian Child Needs Specialized Medical Operation Request from Rev. Tilahun Mendedo, Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama Tamirat Berhanu is a wonderful child of Christ and one of the children in Master Builders Center project. He is 10 years old but already in 7th grade. He lost his dad to HIV and his mom has no income at all except the $25 she receives from MBC every month. She uses this fund to help Tamirat and other siblings in the house. Tamirat needs to have a pediatric cystoscopy, but there are not any doctors in Ethiopia that can perform this procedure. We are looking for help in obtaining funds so that he can be treated in South Africa or Israel. Another option is for an urologist in the US to be able to perform this operation. Please donate here to the Ethiopian Child Medical Fund

Working Together with God Connecting the Dots The Lutheran Church in Ghana - Pastor Paul Fynn Deaconess Hannah Bart-Plange LWML Lutheran Church Charities

The Malaria Initiative Can deadly malaria fever be treated for one third of one penny? Can a pastor fit treatment for 500 suffering people in his shirt pocket? WARNING #1: You may not believe this story. That's a normal reaction, don't worry. WARNING #2: If you do not believe this story, you will be... wrong. (Thank the Lord!) Welcome to an African adventure - right here in Northern Illinois! Hannah's temperature skyrocketed to 104 degrees last Thursday evening. After 4 days of wrangling a 'flu' with Tylenol and chicken soup, we rushed our special guest from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana to the ER Pictured: Deac. Hannah Bart-Plange (center) being interviewed by Dr. Susan Busse (right) at Central DuPage Hospital. She was so weak and Rebekah Lifkin (left) that she could barely open her mouth to have her temperature taken. We were very, very scared.

Click here to read how she was healed! Please Help Deaconess Hannah! YOU can participate in showing Christ's Mercy in this amazing story too!

$2000 = Dcs. Hannah's personal bank loan to come to America. With her teacher's salary of $4000/yr, this loan will take over a year to pay back. Let's give her a hand with that! $500 = Food and travel expenses while she's in the US for one more month.

$3600 = OUCH. Medical Bills = 1 ER Visit + 2 Blood Tests. We are filing lots of paperwork with CDH and hope to have this bill reduced. Any remaining funds will go directly to ELCG outreach efforts in the rural villages of Ghana.

Click here to donate to Hannah's medical expenses $0 - There was no charge for the new treatment LCC doctors gave Hannah to end her malaria fever. It is our fervent prayer that members of the Body of Christ across the globe may soon join us in using this new treatment as The Great Physician opens doors, bringing the gospel to new places and new faces we have not been allowed to reach before.
