Important Notice: If You Forward Devotions or the Making a Difference Newsletter to Friends Through Your E-mail One of the most common problems we encounter with our devotions and newsletters is when people who want to receive the mailings get "mysteriously" removed from the list when they did not hit the SafeUnsubscribe link in their email. After investigating why this was happening we discovered the following: a) When someone uses the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link embedded in every newsletter and devotion, the recipient gets their very own copy of the email and is given the opportunity to sign up to receive them directly. - on the other hand b) When someone uses their personal e-mail program or service (Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, etc.) to forward the email to an individual or list of recipients they are actually sending along the SafeUnsubscribe link to their OWN profile, so if the recipient of an email sent via personal email gets the message and clicks to Unsubscribe, it is the FIRST party that actually gets unsubscribed, not the person clicking. And the only way to get BACK onto the email list is for them to sign up again through the form on our web site: www.LutheranChurchCharities.org Why do people forward devotions and newsletters directly instead of using the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link? Usually it is for convenience - especially if they are forwarding to a group. However when they do that they run the risk of someone on their distribution list deciding to unsubscribe and therefore unsubscribing them by mistake. The solution? Forward devotions and newsletters by using the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link at the top of the e-mail. If you forward the e-mail from your personal account, be aware that someone on your recipient list might unsubscribe you by mistake and you will need to re-subscribe. Any questions? Contact us and we'll be sure to help!

Homeless Mother and Daughter in Need of $1,200 for Housing Request from Pastor David Barber and Thomas Amato, Chairman Board of Elders, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenview, Illinois
LCC's Prayer Wall
We are working with a family, Tina (about 40 years old) and her mother Carla (names changed, about 70 years old), who are living in their car at a north suburban Chicago shopping center and nearby office park parking lot. Their dog Lucky, a miniature American Eskimo, lives in the car with them. They have been living in their car since September 2008. Right now they are living off of Carla's social security check to buy food (in rationed amounts), gas for their car and to pay for doing laundry and take daily showers and buying other necessities. Both Tina and her mom appear undernourished. They returned to their hometown of Chicago about a year ago after having lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area for eight years. They lost their home in foreclosure in 2008.

Tina and her mom have been resourceful when it comes to trying to get out of their present situation. However, without a home address she is having a hard time getting a job. Prospective employers are put off when she tells them that she lives in her car. Initially, members of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glenview, put some gas in their car and gave them a food gift card. Immanuel's objective in helping Tina has been to get them into housing before the weather turns much colder. Tina has found a home to share in an outlying community to the Chicago suburbs. However, Tina and Carla do not yet have the funds for a security deposit and first month's rent. They also need money for a brake job on their car. Immanuel Lutheran Church leadership has committed to fund the first month's rent ($500) for the house they want share. Tina is seeking an additional $500 for the security deposit and $450 to get the brakes on their car repaired. (They will also need tires for the car to make it through the winter.) Any assistance for Tina and Carla would be a tremendous blessing to them as they put their lives back together. Click to donate to this fund...

LCC Announces "Send a Spoken Prayer"
Special Appeal Brings Hope - Healing - Determination to Win Neighborhood To Christ What Satan tried to stop - God Blessed!!
LCC's "Send a Spoken Prayer" e-Card site is available.
Last Wednesday LCC sent out a special appeal to help Pastor Kalonji who was robbed and beaten while taking some items to a member in Chicago. By the overwhelming Christian support of so many - Pastor Kalonji is even more determined to serve his church community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ! THANK YOU for MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
To learn more, Click Here Dear Tim, I write to thank Lutheran Church Charities for sharing with the brothers and sisters in the Lord about my misfortune of Monday, September 28 and the support you have raised. God has truly worked through this tragedy to show me and my family His unfailing love for us. I have received a lot of phone calls, email and text messages, cards and personal visits as a result of the special appeal letter you sent out. And the financial donation to me and my congregation, personally delivered today by LCC's new Director of Missions and Outreach, Pete Imlah, could not speak louder about the love of the brothers and sisters in the Lord for me and their support of the ministry at Zion. I truly thank everyone for the many ways through which you have expressed your love and support to me. My family and I still need your prayers as we recover from both injuries and the shock from me being robbed at gun-point. As for my recovery, I am doing fine. I had the staples removed from the cut on my head yesterday (Monday, October 5) and also was in
court for the preliminary hearing by the judge. The seventeen years old boy who robbed me was brought to court from jail; it was truly sad to see him smile during the hearing as though he truly did not care about what he did to me and about his being incarcerated. I would like to end by thanking LCC, Dianna Bonfield and volunteers for transporting the computer tables and office furniture from Lisle, Illinois, and delivering them to Zion's Community Center when I could not do it last Wednesday. THANK YOU and GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU! Pastor StĂŠphane Kalonji Zion Lutheran Church (9901 S. Winston Avenue, Chicago)
Original Appeal: Late Monday (Sept. 28) night, Rev. Stephane Kalonji at Zion Lutheran Church in Chicago was beaten and robbed at gunpoint while he was delivering food and other needed items to one of his members. He suffered head injuries that required hospitalization and 9 staples in his head. I talked with Pastor Kalonji a few minutes ago and he is at home recovering. He lost money, his credit cards, drivers license and other items. His estimated loss, with hospital bills and all, is around $1000. Pastor Kalonji was scheduled to pick up furniture from a corporate donor yesterday through Lutheran Church Charities but because of his injuries was not able to make it. LCC has arranged volunteers and rented a truck to take care of that today. The donated items are being used for the outreach center that Zion has started. Pastor Kalonji is as determined as ever for the need for outreach with the Gospel to his neighborhood and is more motivated now than ever to proceed forward. Click here to donate to the Rev. LCC Takes Care of the Bayou Kids The following article appeared in the Bayou Grace Community Services Newsletter After a short talk with John LeBlanc, Ms. Dianna Bonfield, Deaconess and Volunteer Coordinator for Lutheran Church Charities, had a great idea. Why not send the kids of the 5 Bayous a little care package from Lutheran Church Charities? She got the ball rolling with the help of former teacher and LCC volunteer Ruth Beierwaltes. Due to their efforts, Bayou Grace received a package of love from LCC. Aside from books to read at the daycare centers that Bayou Grace's Project Learn/Family Literacy program have adopted, the package contained coloring books and even colors to distribute to the kids. Thanks to Dianna and Ruth for all their hard work and such a special gift. Click here to read the rest of the newsletter http://bayougrace.wordpress.com/

Reaching Out to Your Community with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ in Ways that Don't Cost Money! We are in hard economic times. "Times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us! The door is wide open for the Church to be the Church. Jesus showed us by his life that we are to be the church that "Does Feet" (John 13). People say that they would "do" evangelism, they would reach out to people in need, but their church simply does not have the money right now to do it, things are tight! Dear Christian brothers and sisters, it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example. If you would like a staff member of LCC to come out and share ways for you and your church to reach your members and community - without money - contact us at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org We would be more than happy to come and work with you! By the way, we can even bring our K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs with us. This also will NOT cost you!
UPDATE - $3,000 raised, $1,000 still needed! Support for Mission Trip to Kenya Request from Peter Imlah, Director of Mission and Outreach, Lutheran Church Charities Dear Friends in Christ, I have been given an opportunity to join with Salem Lutheran Church, Tomball, Texas (salem4u.com) on a mission trip to provide a prescription eyeglass clinic to people in need in Kenya, Africa, November 12-22 2009. I am really excited about this opportunity to minister in Kenya. During Salem's last trip to Kenya in May they were able to serve and share the Gospel Message with more than 15,000 people at 5 different locations! The November trip will cost me just over $3,500 (not including passport and shots), with the biggest portion coming from airfare. This is a big number, but I believe our God is bigger than that hurdle. Any support would be appreciated. I would love the opportunity to partner with you in this endeavor. If I have 50-100 people partner with me I would get where I need to be quite easily (many hands make for light work). If you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to email me at pete@lutheranchurchcharities.org I believe that the Lord speaks to us through our brothers and sisters in Christ and I would appreciate your input. Feeding Children in Haiti LCC received the following e-mail from John
Hall, President of Trinity/Hope in
Lebanon, Tennessee. Trinity/Hope has been working for the last 10 years to provide a noon meal for the children in 53 Christian Schools in 7 geographic districts. Thank you to all who have supported the ministries in Haiti. Your generous donations continue to bring the Hope and Compassion of Christ to the children and their families. Dear friends, Sometimes you get an email that you just have to share. Here is one such email. It is to Keith Logan (the feeding program administrator for Jeremie) and me. It is from Lophane Laurent, our feeding program manager for all of Haiti. It is a summary of his trip to the area around Jeremie (a particularly distant and poor section of Haiti where we have just started the first feeding programs in the area for four schools.) Pastor Isaac is the ordained Lutheran Pastor who leads the district as its president and Popo is our feeding program director for the area. Below is the section pertaining to the start of this program as written by Lophane.
Dear Brothers, Peace and Grace to you from our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. How are you doing? How are your families? Hope you are well with God and that the same for my family. Brothers, this district is very far, but, when I saw the children, for me it not far because there is many children there who suffer hungry. In all schools I visited all the children where
happy to see and they sung for me like welcome Trinity/Hope. Brothers I was surprised to saw how poor the people are who live there. In each school I went I was sad to see the children, most of them came to school because they know in this school they can find something to eat. I have a child who came to me and aid: Mr. the manager, when Pastor Isaac and Popo told us in September we are going to eat we think this is a dream, but in Jeremie this is the first we go to school at the beginning of the school year just to see if yes there is a program in our school, when we came to school we saw there is something in the kitchen we said this is a dream, because there is many organization when they came here in Jeremie they said they will send food for us, it was not true, this is the reason why when they told us we are going to eat to this year, we said this is a joke, but now Trinity/HOPE changes everything, we see it's not a dream, it's true, since September 7th, we started feeding by one of the best and good organization in Haiti. Brothers, I can tell you [even] I was surprised to see how the program make a big impact in children's life. You couldn't imagine this, the teachers too told me, Mr. the Manager, know we are going to teach well because THERE IS FOOD at school.
Some of you support these four schools specifically but most give so the children in other areas are fed as well, but wherever your gift is directed, the message of what you are providing for all of these children is the same. Your gifts give them hope like they have never dared to have and witness in a mighty way of the HOPE eternal! Blessings, John [Click to contribute to the Food For Haiti Fund]
Can You Help LCC Find Free Warehouse Storage For Our Ongoing Ministry? In order to be able to respond to disasters swiftly, it is imperative that we operate in a state of preparedness. To be able to do that, it is important that we have our vehicles and equipment stored in a location and environment that will enable us to move quickly. For the other parts of our ministry, we need: ●
● ●
●
Work space for our volunteers that is a climate controlled environment Has short term storage space for donations till they can be picked up in a few days. A space large enough where we can drive in and store our Disaster response RV and trailers for immediate DEPLOYMENT. A cargo bay allowing us the ability to load semi-trailers would also be nice and useful feature.
If you know of someone who owns or has available warehouse space that isn't being currently used, please contact Tim Hetzner at Lutheran Church Charities. We understand that use of the warehouse would not be permanent and that the owner would have the full rights to regain their facility if it was to be rented or sold. LCC would carry the insurance on the space we are using. Please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at (866) 455-6466 if you know of someone. This would be a tremendous Help in meeting the increased demands LCC faces. Help us to continue to - by the Grace of God - Make A Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom!

LCC Offers Lutheran Early Response Team Training Tim Hetzner to Lead Training Session In order to better manage these volunteers and resources, FEMA is currently finalizing a guideline on credentialing volunteers for largescale disasters. The federal guidelines are expected to indicate that volunteers responding to a disaster should be trained and certified. Ethiopian Child Needs Specialized Medical Operation Request from Rev. Tilahun Mendedo, Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama Tamirat Berhanu is a wonderful child of Christ and one of the children in Master Builders Center project. He is 10 years old but already in 7th grade. He lost his dad to HIV and his mom has no income at all except the $25 she receives from MBC every month. She uses this fund to help Tamirat and other siblings in the house. Tamirat needs to have a pediatric cystoscopy, but there are not any doctors in Ethiopia that can perform this procedure. We are looking for help in obtaining funds so that he can be treated in South Africa or Israel. Another option is for an urologist in the US to be able to perform this operation. Working Together with God Connecting the Dots The Lutheran Church in Ghana - Pastor Paul Fynn Deaconess Hannah Bart-Plange LWML Lutheran Church Charities
The Malaria Initiative Can deadly malaria fever be treated for one third of one penny? Can a pastor fit treatment for 500 suffering people in his shirt pocket? WARNING #1: You may not believe this story. That's a normal reaction, don't worry. WARNING #2: If you do not believe this story, you will be... wrong. (Thank the Lord!) Welcome to an African adventure - right here in Northern Illinois! Hannah's temperature skyrocketed to 104 degrees last Thursday evening. After 4 days of wrangling a 'flu' with Tylenol and chicken soup, we rushed our special guest from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ghana to the ER Pictured: Deac. Hannah Bart-Plange (center) being interviewed by Dr. Susan Busse (right) at Central DuPage Hospital. She was so weak and Rebekah Lifkin (left) that she could barely open her mouth to have her temperature taken. We were very, very scared.
Click here to read how she was healed! Please Help Deaconess Hannah! YOU can participate in showing Christ's Mercy in this amazing story too! ●

$2000 = Dcs. Hannah's personal bank loan to come to America. With her teacher's salary of $4000/yr, this loan will take over a year to pay back. Let's give her a hand with that! $500 = Food and travel expenses while she's in the US for one more month.

●
$3600 = OUCH. Medical Bills = 1 ER Visit + 2 Blood Tests. We are filing lots of paperwork with CDH and hope to have this bill reduced. Any remaining funds will go directly to ELCG outreach efforts in the rural villages of Ghana.
Click here to donate to Hannah's medical expenses $0 - There was no charge for the new treatment LCC doctors gave Hannah to end her malaria fever.
It is our fervent prayer that members of the Body of Christ across the globe may soon join us in using this new treatment as The Great Physician opens doors, bringing the gospel to new places and new faces we have not been allowed to reach before.
