Nine Year Old Girl with Cerebral Palsy Needs Stem Cell Treatment Request from Pastor Dan Dierks, Peace Lutheran Church Schererville, Indiana Kara is a nine year old girl with Cerebral Palsy. She lives in Dyer, Indiana and is a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She suffers from Cerebral Palsy because of a stroke that occurred prior to her birth. She is unable to walk on her own and has limited use of her left arm. She also suffers from seizure disorder, for which she takes medication daily. Kara participates in therapies in school and at a pediatric clinic, and though much progress has been made, it is slow. Surgery was offered as the only option to help Kara with her physical and orthopedic impairments, and continued therapy the best option to help her become more independent. Because of the unavailability of other treatment programs in the United States, Kara's family has decided to take her to China for stem cell treatment. In this five-week program, Kara would receive stem cell injections, paired with a rigorous therapy program. The treatment will be given at The Wu Stem Cells Medical Center in Beijing, China (www.unistemcells.com) beginning December 14, 2009 and continuing into January 2010. Our anticipated hope is to see global improvement in Kara's abilities, physically and mentally, and the treating doctor feels very confident we will see these results. Kara is covered under insurance; however, her insurance will not cover any portion of the treatment in China (or anywhere out of the country, for that matter). Because of this, Kara's family will have to pay out-of-pocket for the treatment and all associated costs, equaling approximately $30,000. Any help financially or, even more, with prayer, would be most appreciated. Click here to donate

Your Donations Make A Difference To all the churches and individuals who donated coats. Thank You for Making a Difference and showing the Mercy and Compassion of Christ. Dear LCC, Thanks be to God for the work of Lutheran Church Charities and the congregations who helped support our annual coat and blanket Drive. On Saturday, October 24th, Ebenezer opened its doors to the North Lawndale community on the west side of Chicago, offering to residents the chance for a free coat and blanket. In all we were able to serve over 200 men, women and children. It should be noted that due to the participation of several Lutheran schools, we were able to give most of the children two coats. Our prayers with and for these people was that even as we were blessed to help warm their bodies this winter that our Savior, Jesus Christ, might bring the warmth of His love into their hearts throughout their lives unto eternity. In His Service, Rev. Richard Gizynski

Second Group Completes LCC Announces LERT Training "Send a Spoken Prayer"
LCC's "Send a Spoken Prayer" e-Card site is available.
Thirty new individuals completed the LERT training course hosted by Friends in Christ Lutheran Church in Morris Illinois on Saturday October 24th. These 30 participants, along with the 52 who completed the August training session, will be certified by LCMS World Relief and Human Care Services and will be allowed to respond in the event of a state or federally declared emergency. In order to better manage volunteers and resources, FEMA is currently finalizing a guideline on credentialing volunteers for large-scale disasters. The federal guidelines are expected to indicate that volunteers responding to a disaster should be trained and certified. Over a year ago LCC began plans to establish and provide training for Lutheran Early Response Teams (LERT) through out our district. Should a disaster strike these teams would be put on call and may be asked to deploy in 72 hours or less to the disaster site.
To learn more, Click Here This training will prepare team member for credentialing and will focus on the safety, work, and ministry of Lutherans as Early Responders. Widow Needs Assistance with Medical Insurance Request from Pastor Steve Lockman, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Flint, Michigan I have a member who is need of assistance. Her husband was called Home last month. She was just informed by his former employer that in order to maintain her health insurance she will need to pay a $442 per month premium. Before her husband died the insurance premium was $119 per month. She is not able to pay both her mortgage payment and her health insurance. NEED MET for Bed, Still in Need of Chairs Chicago Family in Need of Bed and Living Room Chairs Request from Rev. Kenety Gee, Urban Mission Strategist - Chicago LCMS North America Missions I am working with a family on the south side of Chicago who is in need of living room chairs and a bed for one of their teenage sons. They have just redone their floors and widows not realizing it would cost more than they can afford. They had to take out the carpets and put in laminate floors because the house they bought three years ago had carpets everywhere except the kitchen and they have three young children in the house who would dirty the carpets and then get sick from them. They are now financially strapped and struggling even to keep up with this early wave of cold temperatures. Bills are pilling up, so if they can save on living room chairs which need to be replaced and get a bed for their teen age son, they would be greatly helped. As always, thank you and may the blessings of the Lord always be upon your ministry. If you have furniture to donate please contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org

Now he is returning to his home country of Ghana to teach at the University of Ghana. He will also be ministering in the area of Bible education. Trinity is giving him some support in that effort but he has an additional personal need. Homeless Mother and Daughter in Need of $1,200 for Housing Request from Pastor David Barber and Thomas Amato, Chairman Board of Elders, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenview,
Illinois We are working with a family, Tina (about 40 years old) and her mother Carla (names changed, about 70 years old), who are living in their car at a north suburban Chicago shopping center and nearby office park parking lot. Their dog Lucky, a miniature American Eskimo, lives in the car with them. They have been living in their car since September 2008. Right now they are living off of Carla's social security check to buy food (in rationed amounts), gas for their car and to pay for doing laundry and take daily showers and buying other necessities. Both Tina and her mom appear undernourished. They returned to their hometown of Chicago about a year ago after having lived in the Boston, Massachusetts area for eight years. They lost their home in foreclosure in 2008.
Tina and her mom have been resourceful when it comes to trying to get out of their present situation. However, without a home address she is having a hard time getting a job. Prospective employers are put off when she tells them that she lives in her car. Initially, members of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glenview, put some gas in their car and gave them a food gift card. Immanuel's objective in helping Tina has been to get them into housing before the weather turns much colder. Tina has found a home to share in an outlying community to the Chicago suburbs. However, Tina and Carla do not yet have the funds for a security deposit and first month's rent. They also need money for a brake job on their car. Immanuel Lutheran Church leadership has committed to fund the first month's rent ($500) for the house they want share. Tina is seeking an additional $500 for the security deposit and $450 to get the brakes on their car repaired. (They will also need tires for the car to make it through the winter.) Any assistance for Tina and Carla would be a tremendous blessing to them as they put their lives back together. Click to donate to this fund...

Haiti Missions Update LCC received the following update from Sue Gross, Haitian Lutheran Mission Project, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park Pastor Isaac Update 2009 - There are now 24 children in Pastor's care. The last little girl to join them was found in a wooded area in one of the villages where the people dump their garbage. Pastor went there to visit one of his congregations. He was on foot with the lay pastor from that congregation when he heard a strange sound coming from the dump area. The Lay Pastor encouraged him to ignore the sound so they could get to their destination quickly but Pastor Isaac heard it again and followed the strange whimper. He then came across a little girl lying in the dump and a wild pig was eating her leg. Important Notice: If You Forward Devotions or the Making a Difference Newsletter to Friends Through Your E-mail One of the most common problems we encounter with our devotions and newsletters is when people who want to receive the mailings get "mysteriously" removed from the list when they did not hit the SafeUnsubscribe link in their
email. After investigating why this was happening we discovered the following: a) When someone uses the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link embedded in every newsletter and devotion, the recipient gets their very own copy of the email and is given the opportunity to sign up to receive them directly. - on the other hand b) When someone uses their personal e-mail program or service (Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, etc.) to forward the email to an individual or list of recipients they are actually sending along the SafeUnsubscribe link to their OWN profile, so if the recipient of an email sent via personal e-mail gets the message and clicks to Unsubscribe, it is the FIRST party that actually gets unsubscribed, not the person clicking. And the only way to get BACK onto the email list is for them to sign up again through the form on our web site: www.LutheranChurchCharities.org Why do people forward devotions and newsletters directly instead of using the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link? Usually it is for convenience - especially if they are forwarding to a group. However when they do that they run the risk of someone on their distribution list deciding to unsubscribe and therefore unsubscribing them by mistake. The solution? Forward devotions and newsletters by using the FORWARD TO A FRIEND link at the top of the e-mail. If you forward the e-mail from your personal account, be aware that someone on your recipient list might unsubscribe you by mistake and you will need to re-subscribe. Any questions? Contact us and we'll be sure to help!

Reaching Out to Your Community with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ in Ways that Don't Cost Money! We are in hard economic times. "Times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us! The door is wide
open for the Church to be the Church. Jesus showed us by his life that we are to be the church that "Does Feet" (John 13). People say that they would "do" evangelism, they would reach out to people in need, but their church simply does not have the money right now to do it, things are tight! Dear Christian brothers and sisters, it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example. If you would like a staff member of LCC to come out and share ways for you and your church to reach your members and community - without money - contact us at 866-4556466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org We would be more than happy to come and work with you! By the way, we can even bring our K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs with us. This also will NOT cost you!

Can You Help LCC Find Free Warehouse Storage For Our Ongoing Ministry? In order to be able to respond to disasters swiftly, it is imperative that we operate in a state of preparedness. To be able to do that, it is important that we have our vehicles and equipment stored in a location and environment that will enable us to move quickly. For the other parts of our ministry, we need: Work space for our volunteers that is a climate controlled environment Has short term storage space for donations till they can be picked up in a few days. A space large enough where we can drive in and store our Disaster response RV and trailers for immediate DEPLOYMENT. A cargo bay allowing us the ability to load semi-trailers would also be nice and useful feature.
If you know of someone who owns or has available warehouse space that isn't being currently used, please contact Tim Hetzner at Lutheran Church Charities. We understand that use of the warehouse would not be permanent and that the owner would have the full rights to regain their facility if it was to be rented or sold. LCC would carry the insurance on the space we are using. Please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at (866) 455-6466 if you know of someone. This would be a tremendous Help in meeting the increased demands LCC faces. Help us to continue to - by the Grace of God - Make A Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom!

Ethiopian Child Needs Specialized Medical Operation
Request from Rev. Tilahun Mendedo, Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama Tamirat Berhanu is a wonderful child of Christ and one of the children in Master Builders Center project. He is 10 years old but already in 7th grade. He lost his dad to HIV and his mom has no income at all except the $25 she receives from MBC every month. She uses this fund to help Tamirat and other siblings in the house.
Tamirat needs to have a pediatric cystoscopy, but there are not any doctors in Ethiopia that can perform this procedure. We are looking for help in obtaining funds so that he can be treated in South Africa or Israel. Another option is for an urologist in the US to be able to perform this operation. Please donate here to the Ethiopian Child Medical Fund

Tim's Pick of the Week The Qur'an and The Bible - A Comparison Islam is a rising tsunami wave in the world of which we need to be informed. In 1973, the followers of Islam numbered 460 million in the world. By 2009 they tripled to 1.6 billion. For a culture to maintain itself it must have a fertility rate of 2.1 1%. The European Union of 31 nations has a fertility rate of 1.38%. Since 1990.90% of immigrants to Europe have been 1slamic.Within four decades Europe may become a predominately Muslim continent. In America estimations run as high as 9 million Muslims. It is known that there are more than 400,000 Muslims in the Chicago area alone. Muslims are people whom I may meet in my school, shopping mall, place of work, and neighborhood. Do I understand them? What do they believe? How can I share Christ with them? The First Section in "The Qur'an and the Bible - A Comparison" examines the primary sources of the Qur'an and the Bible on the subjects of: God/Allah, Jesus, Abraham, Angels/Jinn, Jihad, God's Will, Rebirth, Godly Life, Women, Marriage, Divorce, Suicide, Homosexuality, Judgment, Paradise, etc. Passages from the Qur'an and the Bible appear in parallel columns. A clear, concise summary concludes each topic. The Second Section in "A Personal Word" explores the basic questions of life. Rev. Richter compares Biblical and Islamic beliefs on: How can I have the certainty of eternal life? What meaning does my life have with God? Who is the God of Abraham? etc. The Third Section motivates us to "have a heart" for the Muslim! By research and his own personal experience, Rev.Richter presents "How to Share the Good News with Muslims." The Final Section gives the life of Muhammad, an understanding of Shi'ites and Sunnis, and background to the present radical fundamentalist movement to help you understand the present conflicts.
