Prayer Wall Post a prayer, or pray for others!
Bag Mats for the Homeless Delivered to St. Matthew, Chicago On Thursday, November 5th, Ed Strunk, LCC volunteer and member of Immanuel Lutheran, Palatine, delivered Bag Mats for the Homeless that were made by members of Immanuel's 50's Plus. The mats were delivered to St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Chicago. The mats will be handed out to the homeless that they serve through their soup kitchen and other community outreaches.
LCC Bag Mat Project - Sleeping Mats for Homeless Immanuel Lutheran, Palatine ABC-7 Chicago (Channel 7) recently visited Immanuel Palatine to do a story on their involvement with the Bag Mat Project for their special segment "Live Green with ABC-7". LCC's Prayer Wall
The new sleeping mat ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palatine, Illinois, provides another option to dispose of all those unwanted plastic bags and at the same time reach into the community with a loving act in Christ's name. Each Friday, women from Immanuel's 50s Plus group gather to transform plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Again this year the Evangelism Committee at Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile is attempting to serve the needs within our own congregation and the local community, especially at this time of the year and at this critical time in our economy. We are so thankful for your past support for this project and give all the Glory and Praise to God. We are in the process of soliciting funding for our annual Thanksgiving Baskets for the needy and are seeking your help. We are planning to construct 6 baskets and anticipate the cost of each basket to be about $40.00. To God be the Glory that this project will be a success again this year and will bless each recipient of these baskets with a meal for Thanksgiving that they otherwise may not have had. We do all of this in the name of Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Church Professional Retreat 40 DCEs (Director of Christian Education) and Youth Workers joined together in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for the yearly Church Professional Retreat. Pete Imlah, Director of Mission and Outreach for Lutheran Church Charities was the Bible Study Leader and Dr. Craig Oldenburg from California was the Larger Group Leader. LCC's K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs Tilly and Darlin also attended the conference providing comfort to those church workers who attended the retreat. This retreat was attended by church workers from the Northern Illinois District, Central Illinois District, South Wisconsin District and Iowa East District.
LCC Attends Mission Fair at St. Matthew Hawthorn Woods In an effort to expose their congregation to various Mission Ministries, St Matthew in Hawthorn Woods held a Mission Fair this past weekend. Pete Leaves for Kenya Pete Imlah, Director of Mission and Outreach for LCC leaves on Thursday, November 12th for a 10 day mission trip to provide a prescription eyeglass clinic to people in need in Kenya, Africa. Watch our website www.LutheranChurchCharities.org for Pete's updates from Kenya.
Careers for Christ Conference, CUC Pete Imlah spoke at Concordia University, Chicago last Friday night, November 6th. He was invited to be the Keynote speaker at Concordia's Careers for Christ Conference. Pete shared with the Junior and Senior High School students about what it means to answer the call to ministry as well as sharing his own journey since graduating from Concordia. LCC Comfort Dog Tilly attended the conference with Pete and was on hand to meet the students.
Comfort Dog Ministry Update
Comfort Dogs Visit Milestone, Rockford On Tuesday, November 3rd LCC volunteer and Comfort Dog handler Tranetta McComb and LCC Comfort Dog Star joined Deaconess Jana Peters with Voice of Care on Jana's weekly devotion at Milestone. Milestone is a residence for adults with disabilities in Rockford. 20 residents and staff joined Jana for the devotional time and then spent time visiting with Star.
Trinity Lutheran Church and School, Lombard On Wednesday, November 4th, LCC Comfort Dogs Howe, Zina, Olympia and Tilly attended the chapel service at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Lombard. Tim Hetzner spoke on the LCC K-9 Parish Comfort Dog Ministry. After the service the dogs (and handlers) visited with the students and faculty.
Celebration Ministries
LCC Comfort Dog Darlin has been busy working with Christine Rechsteiner, Campus Ministry Coordinator at Celebration Ministries in Park Forest. They were at the Victory Center with the PreSchoolers as they got ready for trick-ortreating. They also attended Park Forest's Safe Halloween. Then they visited Just a Day Away in Steger (a work training sight for people with disabilities, pictured left) Christine talked about Darlin's job and responsibilities.

She services clients in a 20 mile radius of Elgin. First time clients receive $5.00 off with another $5.00 off for each additional animal groomed. Widow Needs Assistance with Medical Insurance Request from Pastor Steve Lockman, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Flint, Michigan Partial Need Met - Thank you to those who have donated to this ongoing need. Pastor Lockman pictured (right) receiving check from LCC I have a member who is need of assistance. Her husband was called Home last month. She was just informed by his former employer that in order to maintain her health insurance she will need to pay a $442 per month premium. Before her husband died the insurance premium was $119 per month. She is not able to pay both her mortgage payment and her health insurance. Her doctor has told her that due to her own health she will need to apply for Social Security and disability. Our congregation does not have the resources to help her with ongoing expenses. Homeless Mother and Daughter in Need of $1,000 for Housing Request from Pastor David Barber and Thomas Amato, Chairman Board of Elders, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenview, Illinois UPDATED AS OF 11/1/2009: Tina and Carla (names intentionally changed) want to thank each of the donors for contributions received so far by Immanuel Lutheran Church, on their behalf. (pictured Thomas Amato receiving check from LCC) These funds combined with the major portion of Carla's November social security check, will be used to get the long needed brake job done on their car this week. Once the brakes have been repaired, they will need approximately $800 to replace the tires on their car. Though Tina and Carla were in housing for the last three weeks, thanks to a gift from Immanuel Lutheran Church, they will again be in their car tonight. About three weeks ago, with the funds provided by Immanuel Lutheran Church, we were able to get Tina and her mom into a house-sharing arrangement in a northern suburb after having lived in their car for about a year. This arrangement appeared to be working out fine, until last week, when the owner notified Tina that he had decided to move back into his parents' home and rent out his entire house. So Tina and Carla will be back living in their car again unless we find them another home. If anyone in the north or northwest suburbs of Chicago has housing available that they wish to share with Tina, her mom and her small dog, he/she can contact Tom Amato at Immanuel Lutheran Church (847.724-1034). Woman Facing Eviction- Immediate Need for $1,169 Request from Pastor Dave Hudak, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Schaumburg, Illinois Yolanda lives in the Schaumburg area in a rented apartment. She was working two jobs in order to make ends meet, but recently lost her part time job. As a result of this uncertainty, her son is now living with his father in Florida. She recently received information that she would be evicted from her apartment if she could not come up with $1,169 in back rent. While Yolanda is not a member of St. Peter, she does have roots in the Lutheran Church back in Puerto Rico. We are also assisting her with food from our food pantry at this time. Thanksgiving Greetings from the Haitian Lutheran Mission Project, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park LCC received the following update from Sue Gross, Haitian Lutheran Mission Project, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park Although in this economy we may feel we are having to do without some of the things we consider necessities, Thanksgiving might be a good time for us to re-evaluate what is really important and what we might be able to give up permanently to give glory to GOD. I am not asking any of you to starve your families so that you can support Pastor Isaac's Ministry but there might be a little luxury in your life you can do without so that someone else can feed his child more than 5 kernels of corn a day. Does your family go out for dinner occasionally? Instead of taking them out for pizza once a month have pizza at home and sponsor an orphan for $25.00 a month with the money you save by eating at home. Nine Year Old Girl with Cerebral Palsy Needs Stem Cell Treatment Request from Pastor Dan Dierks, Peace Lutheran Church Schererville, Indiana Kara is a nine year old girl with Cerebral Palsy. She lives in Dyer, Indiana and is a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She suffers from Cerebral Palsy because of a stroke that occurred prior to her birth. She is unable to walk on her own and has limited use of her left arm. She also suffers from seizure disorder, for which she takes medication daily.
Kara participates in therapies in school and at a pediatric clinic, and though much progress has been made, it is slow. Surgery was offered as the only option to help Kara with her physical and orthopedic impairments, and continued therapy the best option to help her become more independent. Because of the unavailability of other treatment programs in the United States, Kara's family has decided to take her to China for stem cell treatment. In this five-week program, Kara would receive stem cell injections, paired with a rigorous therapy program. The treatment will be given at The Wu Stem Cells Medical Center in Beijing, China (www.unistemcells.com) beginning December 14, 2009 and continuing into January 2010. Our anticipated hope is to see global improvement in Kara's abilities, physically and mentally, and the treating doctor feels very confident we will see these results. Kara is covered under insurance; however, her insurance will not cover any portion of the treatment in China (or anywhere out of the country, for that matter). Because of this, Kara's family will have to pay out-of-pocket for the treatment and all associated costs, equaling approximately $30,000. Fourth Group Completes LERT Training Twenty four new individuals completed the LERT training course hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Illinois on Tuesday November 3rd. These 24 participants, along with the 105 who completed the three earlier training sessions, will be certified by LCMS World Relief and Human Care Services and will be allowed to respond in the event of a state or federally declared emergency. This workshop was the last one scheduled for this year. If you are interested in taking the training, watch for future training dates after the first of the year.
Silent Auction Items Needed for Fundraiser The Bakery House, a ministry for homeless men in Gary, Indiana is in need of items for a Silent Auction. The Auction and Fund Raiser Dinner will be held on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crown Point, Indiana. Rebuilding the Breach Ministries, which owns and operates the Bakery House, is an ad hoc ministry of Lutheran Churches in the Northwest Indiana area. Immediate Response Needed to take advantage of this Matching Program Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has a GIVING PLUS program that LCC has benefited from in the past where they will match your gift to LCC $1 for every $2 donation, up to $300. Thrivent is phasing out the program and their pot of money will be gone before the end of the year. For those Thrivent Members who have used GIVING PLUS for Lutheran Church Charities 12/31 "Remember Us Last" year end appeal, in order to get Thrivent funds, those gifts will have to be made soon while there is still matching dollars available. You can do this by downloading a Thrivent Giving Plus Form and sending it in to LCC, 333 W Lake Street, Addison IL 60101 or by calling our office at 866-455-6466
Can You Help LCC Find Free Warehouse Storage For Our Ongoing Ministry? In order to be able to respond to disasters swiftly, it is imperative that we operate in a state of preparedness. To be able to do that, it is important that we have our vehicles and equipment stored in a location and environment that will enable us to move quickly. For the other parts of our ministry, we need: Work space for our volunteers that is a climate controlled environment Has short term storage space for donations till they can be picked up in a few days. A space large enough where we can drive in and store our Disaster response RV and trailers for immediate DEPLOYMENT. A cargo bay allowing us the ability to load semi-trailers would also be nice and useful feature. If you know of someone who owns or has available warehouse space that isn't being currently used, please contact Tim Hetzner at Lutheran Church Charities. We understand that use of the warehouse would not be permanent and that the owner would have the full rights to regain their facility if it was to be rented or sold. One is a family of four, also a family of six and a single mother. They have arrived here with very little and need transportation in order to work. LCMS Pastor starts Orphanage in Ethiopia Rev. Tilahun Mendedo and his family have started a Lutheran orphanage in Ethiopia - where he was born. Pastor Mendedo is currently serving at Faith Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Mobile, Alabama.
To find out how you can help the orphanage grow in helping many of the street children in Ethiopia, please watch the video here. Spirit of Life Chorus Performance Schedule The Spirit of Life Chorus is a 100+ member ecumenical Christian concert chorus performing in church sanctories and auditoriums throughout the northern Illinois area. Our concert series this fall is entitled "A Baby Changes Everything". Imagine Mary and Joseph as their baby was born. Do you think their son changed their lives? Parent and Child Hand in Hand Thursday, November 12, 2009 9:30 am - 11:00 am Faith Lutheran Church 431 S. Arlington Heights Rd. Arlington Heights, IL Celebrating Thanksgiving is the theme for the Parent and Child Hand in Hand class that will be held at Faith Lutheran Church,
431 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL on Thursday, November 12, 2009, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Parent and Child Hand in Hand classes are designed for parents (or grandparents or other caregivers) and two and "young" three year old children as an introduction to the pre-school experience in a Christian environment. There will be Learning Centers for both the child and parent to explore as well as planned activities that promote growth and meet the child's developmental needs. Parents have an opportunity to connect with other parents while children are at play and during informal discussions based on child development topics. Pre-registration is appreciated but drop-ins are welcome. There will be a $5.00 charge per child to cover costs of materials. Arise! Cry Out! Saturday, November 14, 2009 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Faith Lutheran Church 431 S. Arlington Heights Rd. Arlington Heights, IL Arise! Cry Out!, a nationwide day of prayer sponsored by Moms in Touch International will be hosted by Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights on Saturday, November 14, 2009, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This event which will take place at over 600 sites internationally. Women of all walks of life and faith traditions are invited to join together with the sole focus of praying for children. It is not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. This will be a concentrated time of reflection and interaction with like-minded women. Women who participate will take away a lingering awareness of God's involvement in their own lives, as well as the lives of children. There is also a powerful experience of joining with others who share the same desire that children are under God's constant supervision and care. It is possible to pre-register by going to the web-site www.momsintouch.org, but walkins are welcome for all or part of the program. 120th Anniversary Concert Sunday, November 15, 2009 3:00 PM First Bethlehem Lutheran Church
1649 W. LeMoyne, Chicago In celebration of the 120th anniversary of its building and the 138th anniversary of the congregation, First Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Chicago will hold a special concert and hymn sing on Sunday, November 15, 2009, at 3 p.m. Michael Waal, organist at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, will be the organist and Laura Schmuldt, director of music at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Cary, will be the vocalist. The theme will be "Through the Church Year," and will feature works from every season of the church year, including works by Bach, Buxtehude, Bender, and Bunjes. A free will offering will be collected. Proceeds from the concert will go towards capital improvements. First Bethlehem Lutheran Church is located at 1649 W. Le Moyne, the corner of Le Moyne and Paulina Streets, in the East Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. It is located approximately five blocks from the North Avenue exit of the Kennedy Expressway. Please note that the posters sent out to many of the Chicagoland congregations incorrectly give the date as November 13; it should read November 15.

St John is conveniently located on the northside, in the heart of Chicago, three blocks west of highway 90/94 and has good parking facilities. "These are the Days..." is the theme of the annual Christmas Concert presented by St. John's Lutheran Church and School, 505 S. Park Rd. La Grange, IL 60525 on Sunday, December 13th at 6:30 pm. Under the direction of Mr. David Christian, this evening of music will feature St. John's adult and children's choirs and ensembles, orchestra and two handbell choirs. St. John's is delighted this year to also feature guest organist, Michael Wolniakowski, master organist and teacher at Lyons Township High School in the choral music department. The music performed at this year's concert will expand various time periods and styles, reiterating the timeless yet prevailing significance of the birth of Jesus. Familiar music and carols which have been a part of our Christmas tradition for generations will be heard. Yet, as the theme suggests, embodied in the evening's repertoire will be the compelling message that the hope of Christmas is for "these days," leaving the audience with forward thrusting joy and peace to last beyond the holiday season.
