LCC Staff Member Pete Imlah Arrives in Kenya Pete Imlah, Director of Mission and Outreach for LCC arrived safely in Kenya on Friday, November 13th for a 10 day mission trip. We received the following update from Pete: Things are going well. We saw about 215 people today. God was moving in a mighty way. I was blessed with the chance to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the area top police officer. He committed his life to the Lord today. He knows Jesus but had never totally surrendered his life completely to him. We prayed together and then he had me share with his three subordinates.

LCC Announces "Send a Spoken Prayer"

Single Mother of Two Facing Eviction Request from Pastor Brian Davies, Lord of Glory Lutheran Church, Grayslake, Illinois

LCC's "Send a Spoken Prayer" e-Card site is available. To learn more, Click Here

Jana is a mother of two children, a 3 year old and an infant. Although her family is Muslim, her three year old attends our Gloryland Christian Preschool. Recently, Jana's husband left her, and Jana is left without a job, money, and soon a place to live, as she is scheduled to be evicted on November 25th. Her husband is also about to take her vehicle away. Her child is now on scholarship with our preschool, and our food pantry is helping, but we are looking for help in providing a vehicle, living expenses, and a place to live. We are looking for about $1500 to help Jana's immediate needs and help her avoid eviction. Any help of either a car or monetary donations will be a blessing to this family. Life Saving Education for Orphans in Kenya$6,000 Needed Update from Jacob Fraher, concerning the work of Pastor Dennis Meeker in the slums of Kenya A few years ago, LCMS Pastor Dennis Meeker and his wife, Deaconess Lorna (serving Springs of Life Lutheran Church Kibera, Kenya), started taking in orphans who had no one to provide for them. The conditions some of these children were living in were absolutely horrifying. They were relocated to the Meeker's home and given the love and care every child deserves. Below is the latest update from Pastor Meeker. Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya! My wife, Deaconess Lorna, and I are serving in an area known as Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. It is estimated that over 1,000,000 people are packed in a 1.5 square mile area, most of them living on less than $1 per day. Scattered throughout this impoverished area are thousands of orphans. We have started a ministry named Compassionate Social Care Ministries. CSCM is our way of getting support to the children we find in desperate need. If a child's parents die and there is no one to take the child in, he or she is left to the streets or alone in what they once knew to be their home. Children drop out of school because no one is willing or able to pay their school fees and struggle to feed themselves or their siblings. CSCM pays the school fees of over 100 children who otherwise wouldn't be in school. The economic recession has hit everyone hard and we are certainly feeling it over here in Kenya. In January 2010, school fees are due, and, by the looks of the situation, my wife and I will have a crisis on our hands. I cannot bear the thought of withdrawing these children who have no one else to provide for them from school enrollment because we are not able to pay their school fees. We are sending out this emergency appeal in an effort to allow all our children to remain in school. If a handful of churches took up an offering, we would get that much closer to meeting our $6,000 goal by January. Also, individuals have the opportunity to pay the school fees of specific children ($35 a month). We cannot do this alone! Please read more about our ministry at our website www.cscmkenya.org. We continue to serve and love by the cross of Christ. Rev. Dennis Meeker Click here to donate

Thanksgiving Baskets for Mobile Alabama Request from Pastor Tillahun Menedo, Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama Again this year the Evangelism Committee at Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile is attempting to serve the needs within our own congregation and the local community, especially at this time of the year and at this critical time in our economy. We are so thankful for your past support for this project and give all the Glory and Praise to God. We are in the process of soliciting funding for our annual Thanksgiving Baskets for the needy and are seeking your help. We are planning to construct 6 baskets and anticipate the cost of each basket to be about $40.00. Car Needed for Arabic Outreach Ministry Request from POBLO Missionary, Hicham Chehab Dear Friends, Could you please spread the word that we need a small car for the ministry that would save gas? Beautiful Feet Conference, Concordia University Chicago Last Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday (November 12-14) Lutheran Church Charities staff members Tim Hetzner, Maria Payes and Dianna Bonfield along with K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs, Howie, Zina and Tara hosted a display at the Beautiful Feet Conference at Concordia University Chicago. The conference drew students from all of the Concordia Universities throughout the United States to look at and reflect on the various opportunities for missions that God puts before the church under the theme "Beautiful Feet"

Your Donations Make A Difference Last week LCC volunteers were out picking up and delivering donations. Thank you to Bob Waterman and Gary Kessler who loaded and delivered the 12 ft trailer full of donations. Also a special thank you to the crew of Ray Bogaert, Mike Kinyon, Don & Andrew Leschman and Helmut Mueller who picked up a dining room set from Dr.Susan Busse and delivered it to the North Campus. ---------------------------------------Bethesda Lutheran Church in Chicago received a donation of clothing for their Haitian ministry that was picked up by Rev Jean Bingue and one of members of the Haitian ministry. ----------------------------------------

Last week two members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Harrison, Arkansas drove in to pick up an organ donated by Mark and Dori Chianakas, members of St. John, Algonquin and a Carrier furnace donated by Bob and Sandy VanHam, members of Peace, Lombard. Pastor Eric Stefanski of Holy Trinity saw the items available in the newsletter. The furnace in their church is over 30 years old and needs replacing and the church organ was also showing signs of wear. It was a blessing that we were able to connect a need for a church in Arkansas with items here in Chicago.

Widow Needs Assistance with Medical Insurance Request from Pastor Steve Lockman, Emanuel Lutheran Church, Flint, Michigan Partial Need Met - Thank you to those who have donated to this ongoing need. Pastor Lockman pictured (right) receiving check from LCC I have a member who is need of assistance. Her husband was called Home last month. She was just informed by his former employer that in order to maintain her health insurance she will need to pay a $442 per month premium. Before her husband died the insurance premium was $119 per month. She is not able to pay both her mortgage payment and her health insurance. Her doctor has told her that due to her own health she will need to apply for Social Security and disability.

Our congregation does not have the resources to help her with ongoing expenses. Any assistance would be a blessing to her. In His service, Pastor Steve Lockman

Homeless Mother and Daughter in Need of $1,000 for Housing Request from Pastor David Barber and Thomas Amato, Chairman Board of Elders, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenview, Illinois UPDATED AS OF 11/1/2009: Tina and Carla (names intentionally changed) want to thank each of the donors for contributions received so far by Immanuel Lutheran Church, on their behalf. (pictured Thomas Amato receiving check from LCC) These funds combined with the major portion of Carla's November social security check, will be used to get the long needed brake job done on their car this week. Once the brakes have been repaired, they will need approximately $800 to replace the tires on their car. Though Tina and Carla were in housing for the last three weeks, thanks to a gift from Immanuel Lutheran Church, they will again be in their car tonight. About three weeks ago, with the funds provided by Immanuel Lutheran Church, we were able to get Tina and her mom into a house-sharing arrangement in a northern suburb after having lived in their car for about a year. This arrangement appeared to be working out fine, until last week, when the owner notified Tina that he had decided to move back into his parents' home and rent out his entire house. So Tina and Carla will be back living in their car again unless we find them another home. If anyone in the north or northwest suburbs of Chicago has housing available that they wish to share with Tina, her mom and her small dog, he/she can contact Tom Amato at Immanuel Lutheran Church (847.724-1034). Again, any assistance for Tina and Carla would be a tremendous blessing to them as they put their lives back together, especially as the colder weather is upon us. Click to donate to this fund...

Woman Facing Eviction- Immediate Need for $1,169 Request from Pastor Dave Hudak, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Schaumburg, Illinois Yolanda lives in the Schaumburg area in a rented apartment. She was working two jobs in order to make ends meet, but recently lost her part time job. As a result of this uncertainty, her son is now living with his father in Florida. She recently received information that she would be evicted from her apartment if she could not come up with $1,169 in back rent. While Yolanda is not a member of St. Peter, she does have roots in the Lutheran Church back in Puerto Rico. We are also assisting her with food from our food pantry at this time. I would appreciate any help that could be offered to Yolanda at this time. Click here to donate

Thanksgiving Greetings from the Haitian Lutheran Mission Project, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park LCC received the following update from Sue Gross, Haitian Lutheran Mission Project, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland Park Although in this economy we may feel we are having to do without some of the things we consider necessities, Thanksgiving might be a good time for us to re-evaluate what is really important and what we might be able to give up permanently to give glory to GOD. I am not asking any of you to starve your families so that you can support Pastor Isaac's Ministry but there might be a little luxury in your life you can do without so that someone else can feed his child more than 5 kernels of corn a day. Does your family go out for dinner occasionally? Instead of taking them out for pizza once a month have pizza at home and sponsor an orphan for $25.00 a month with the money you save by eating at home. Let the children know that they are feeding a child that has nothing by giving up their night out. To read the entire article, click here. Can You Help LCC Find Free Warehouse Storage For Our Ongoing Ministry? In order to be able to respond to disasters swiftly, it is imperative that we operate in a state of preparedness. To be able to do that, it is important that we have our vehicles and equipment stored in a location and environment that will enable us to move quickly. For the other parts of our ministry, we need:

Work space for our volunteers that is a climate controlled environment Has short term storage space for donations till they can be picked up in a few days. A space large enough where we can drive in and store our Disaster response RV and trailers for immediate DEPLOYMENT. A cargo bay allowing us the ability to load semi-trailers would also be nice and useful feature. If you know of someone who owns or has available warehouse space that isn't being currently used, please contact Tim Hetzner at Lutheran Church Charities. We understand that use of the warehouse would not be permanent and that the owner would have the full rights to regain their facility if it was to be rented or sold. LCC would carry the insurance on the space we are using. Please contact Tim Hetzner, President of LCC at (866) 455-6466 if you know of someone. This would be a tremendous Help in meeting the increased demands LCC faces. Help us to continue to - by the Grace of God - Make A Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom!

Tim's Pick of the Week Purpose and Power in Retirement: New Opportunities for Meaning and Significance Hardcover By: Dr. Harold G. Koenig

Dr. Harold G. Koenig, with expertise in the fields of geriatrics, mental health, and religion, explains that the notion of retirement was in fact a marketing tool developed in the post-World War II period. Continuing today, society's image of retirement is based largely on myths, such as: things will get better when you retire-you'll be able to do everything you wanted to but couldn't when you worked. In fact, these beliefs can be harmful, leading to emotional issues, identity crises, and problems with physical health. Koenig illustrates how having a purpose motivates and energizes people in their retirement years. And he shows how striving for goals in itself brings meaning, satisfaction, and a sense of reward to retirement years.

Christmas Concert at St. John's La Grange Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 6:30 PM St. John Lutheran Church 47th Street & Brainard Ave. La Grange, Illinois 60525

"These are the Days..." is the theme of the annual Christmas Concert presented by St. John's Lutheran Church and School, 505 S. Park Rd. La Grange, IL 60525 on Sunday, December 13th at 6:30 pm. Under the direction of Mr. David Christian, this evening of music will feature St. John's adult and children's choirs and ensembles, orchestra and two handbell choirs. St. John's is delighted this year to also feature guest organist, Michael Wolniakowski, master organist and teacher at Lyons Township High School in the choral music department. The music performed at this year's concert will expand various time periods and styles, reiterating the timeless yet prevailing significance of the birth of Jesus. Familiar music and carols which have been a part of our Christmas tradition for generations will be heard. Yet, as the theme suggests, embodied in the evening's repertoire will be the compelling message that the hope of Christmas is for "these days," leaving the audience with forward thrusting joy and peace to last beyond the holiday season.
