Nurses Desperately Needed In Haiti to Train Haitians on Basic Medical Skills

End of February - beginning of March

Lutheran Church Charities is partnering with Linda Arnold of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, Illinois and the Haitian Lutheran Mission Project to put together a special medical mission team of RNs. This team will be teaching local Haitians who are interested in becoming nurses but do not have the opportunity to get the proper training. There is a great need for medical assistants in the Jeremie hospital and the village medical clinics. Participants need to be RNs who are grounded in their Christian faith, comfortable teaching basic first aid, hygiene, and disease prevention to large and small groups. Participants should be in good health and able to handle the rugged conditions of the journey. This trip will involve traveling to remote mountain villages in the back of a pickup truck and teaching through an interpreter, outdoors in extreme heat and less than sanitary conditions. Our dates are not firm but the last week of February or the first week of March are being considered. The trip will last about 10 days and the cost will be $2,000.00 per person. If you are interested in being part of this unique team and want to Make A Difference in the lives of people and in the Kingdom of God click here to register. For more information please contact Tim Hetzner at 866-455-6466 or LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org

Thank you to Tom Lewis member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Roselle, who delivered some tools and home remodeling supplies for our LERT teams to use when doing Disaster Response. Among the supplies was a dry wall sander which will aid our volunteers when putting up new drywall in the homes we are helping to repair.

On Wednesday, October 6th Joy Mathew and his two sons Ashish Joy and Tomy Mathew (pictured on the right) stopped by the LCC offices to pick up a donated motorized wheelchair. Joy is a recent Immigrant from India living in Addison. He has post Polio paralysis in both of his legs and was in need of a motorized wheelchair. Because of the wheelchair he is now able to actively seek employment.

Pastor Gene Bingue is the pastor of a congregation of refugees from French speaking countries. Recently the congregation is ministering to refugees from Haiti . In the aftermath of the earthquake, large numbers of Haitian refugees came to Chicago because of the existing Haitian community. Bethesda Lutheran Church, who shares the resource of its building with the French speaking ministry, is located in the heart of one of the areas in Chicago which has a high percentage of refugees from around the world. On Monday, Pastor Bingue stopped by the LCC offices to pick up a number of donations to use in the ministry's outreach to these Haitian families and others in need. Most of these families come with nothing but the clothes on their backs. The French Speaking ministry assists them with clothing, furniture and food. Among the donations were several men's suits, women and men's clothing, clothing for children and infants, fleece blankets from Zone 22 of the LWML, and a donation of plastic bag mats from Marie Bunte of St Paul Lutheran Church in Chicago Heights for ministry to the homeless in the community.

Technology - A Tool for Ministry and God's Kingdom

Lutheran Church Charities Announces Our First Technology Conference/Roundtable - FREE Thursday, October 21 11:00am - 1:00pm Seegers Center, Addison, Illinois Ever wonder what would have happened if the Apostle Paul had available to him the technology we have today? The Letters to the churches would have been broadcast emailed - and just imagine the "reply all" responses! The Apostle could have had a blog where doctrinal concerns and questions were debated. Who knows, the Apostle Paul may even have written a daily "Paul's Theological Lesson for the Day". Well, maybe it's better that he didn't have the option, but the use of technology is here to stay - the good, the bad, and sad to say, the ugly.

Comfort Dog Update LCC's Newest Comfort Dogs in Training! There are two new members of the LCC K-9 Parish Comfort Dog team. Pictured here with Pete Imlah are our new puppies, Jackson and Louie. Both are ½ European Cream Golden Retrievers and ½ American Golden Retrievers. Both puppies were donated to LCC for the Comfort Dog Ministry by Debbie Szwandrok. Debbie owns Eclipse Dog Grooming (Click here for more info.) and provides free grooming services for several of our Comfort Dogs. She also breeds Golden Retrievers (Click here for more info.) Debbie has graciously donated these two puppies to help in the purchase of a trained K-9 Parish Comfort Dog for Walther Lutheran High School and St. Paul Lutheran Church and School. Jackson was named in memory of Doug Grebasch, former principal of St. Paul Lutheran School who passed away this past Labor Day. Doug and Gail Grebasch were instrumental in getting a K-9 Parish Comfort Dog placed at Walther and St. Paul. Doug was a Civil War buff and his favorite military leader was General Stonewall Jackson.

Immanuel Dundee Big Serve LCC's K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs were invited to participate in the "Big Serve" at Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Dundee. Over 475 individuals participated in this event for the purpose of having a positive impact on their community and experience the joy of drawing people closer to Christ through service. Individuals of all ages participated in general building and home maintenance in local senior homes, Habitat for Humanity, Well Children Center in Elgin, FISH Food Pantry in Carpentersville, and community yard work; crafty servant projects like assembling fleece blankets, caner hats, and encouragement cards; and food service type things like collecting non-perishable food donations, preparing lunches for crisis centers and homeless shelters. They also had teams visit four local nursing/assisted living homes with LCC's K-9 Parish Comfort dogs and made care packages for soldiers. LCC appreciates being asked to participate in the wonderful event and commends Immanuel Lutheran Church for making such an impact in their community.

K-9 Chapel Talk St. Paul Skokie On Wednesday, October 6th, LCC's K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs visited with students at St. Paul Lutheran Academy in Skokie. Star and Tillie, along with Comfort Dogs in training Faith, Hope and Jo Jo, visited classrooms and spent time being petted. Pete Imlah shared in Chapel on the importance of knowing who we are and whose we are: A called child of God with a purpose - to love God and love others.

Looking for Ways to Share the Mercy and Compassion of Christ to Those in Your Church and Community? We are in hard economic times. "Times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us to share the Mercy and Compassion of Christ! The door is wide open for the Church to be the Church. Jesus showed us by his life that we are to be the church that "Does Feet" (John 13). People say that they would "do" evangelism, they would reach out to people in need, but their church simply does not have the money right now to do it, things are tight! Dear

Christian brothers and sisters, it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example. If you would like a staff member of LCC to come out and share ways for you and your church to reach your members and community with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ - without money - contact us at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org We would be more than happy to come and work with you! By the way, we can even bring our K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs with us. This also will NOT cost you!

The Peace of Dog ... I mean, God This article was written by Rev. Tim Engel, pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Portage, Indiana. K-9 Parish Comfort Dog Fuerst works with Pastor Engel at Holy Cross.

Saturday, October 2, 2010 In case you missed it, last Saturday two tornadoes hit the Schererville area. Actually, they were mock tornadoes which were part of a mock disaster drill. I had the privilege of joining in this drill as part of the Indiana K-9 Assisted Crisis Response Team (the "Dog Team" for short). This is a team of dogs and handlers who have received special training that enables them to help people in the aftermath of a critical incident or disaster. The team is part of the Indiana Department of Mental Health and Addictions. The team leader is Dr. Jean Marie Thompson. Click here to read the rest of the article (nwitimes.com)...

Motorcycles Needed to Help Pastors in Haiti Spread the Gospel When Tim Hetzner traveled to Haiti in March 2010 he purchased several motorcycles for the pastors to use for transportation. Because of the terrible condition of the roads, motorcycles are the most efficient means of transportation for many of the pastors who must travel many miles between the different churches that they serve and to get to their members. More motorcycles are desperately needed. A new motorcycle costs $1,000 and is an important tool that helps the pastors to minister to their members and Laypastor Gabriel Jules spread the Gospel throughout Haiti. Pictured are two pastors that have been helped because of your support. Click here to donate Pastor Reliere Augustn

North and West NID Pastors' Conference On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, Tim Hetzner and Pete Imlah attended the Combined North and West Region Pastors' Conference in Lake Lawn Lodge, WI. LCC Comfort Dogs Howe and Tillie were also present to bring love and comfort to our Northern Illinois pastors. Tim and Pete had time to visit with the pastors to share about what God is doing in and through the Mercy and Compassion outreach of Lutheran Church Charities and to talk about ways LCC could walk alongside them to help ministry within their parishes and out to their communities. Pictured is Pastor Warren Schilf from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palatine, petting LCC Comfort Dog Tillie.

September 24-Severe Storm Hit Port-Au-Prince, Haiti Tent Cities Affected- Shoes Needed for the Children A short but severe storm with high winds and heavy rains hit Haiti's earthquake-devastated capital, Port-Au-Prince. No warnings were issued because the storm that Friday afternoon was not predicted. The high winds destroyed tents and the rain has turned hillsides into mudslides. Because of your generous donations LCC has been able to provide thousands of children with shoes to protect them from mud-related parasites and diseases. This new storm means that additional shoes are needed for the children in the affected Tent Cities. Click here for story on CNN.com

Please contribute now if you are moved to help! Thank you for your compassion for these children.

Last month more shoes were distributed in tent cities in Jacmel and Leogane (below). Thank you for your continual support to help all these children and for showing them Mercy and Compassion. Click here to view more photos Click here to read the original appeal

Malaria Initiative `Malaria Initiative' is a non-profit corporation formed by Susan Busse M.D., Thomas Hesselink M.D., and John Peterson, to bring spiritual and medical treatment to those suffering from Malaria, working with Lutheran Church Charities. A treatment of acidified sodium chlorite at a cost of less than $00.01 USD. per dose has proven to be very promising in preliminary laboratory and field trials. We have been working in Uganda, Sierria Leone, Ethiopia, and Ghana to improve our working relationship in these countries to further the treatment of Malaria using this particular treatment. Our goal is to spread the Message of Christ and bring a useful and inexpensive treatment for Malaria; Malaria being the number one infectious killer world wide. We are currently working at gathering more scientific data from sites that have Malaria patients, to track them along with their progress, and to document the results of the treatments so we can publish in medical journals. We are supporting a PhD. student doing thesis work at Western Michigan University on this promising treatment. Malaria Initiative is looking to get help financing the above stated goals so they may travel to train personnel and fulfill all our commitments. The three principals have taken no payment for their services, all have volunteered their services and funded much of the costs out of pocket along with donations from generous donors. LCC Emergency Assistance Fund LCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it is increasing because of the current economic times we are living in. LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so that when these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? This is an important way for the Body of Christ to share the Mercy and Compassion and Proclamation of Christ. To contribute please click here Thank you for continuing to Make A Difference!
