Nurses Desperately Needed In Haiti to Train Haitians on Basic Medical Skills March 3-12, 2011
Lutheran Church Charities is partnering with Linda Arnold of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, Illinois and the Haitian Lutheran Mission Project to put together a special medical mission team of RNs.
LCC's "Send a Spoken Prayer" e-Card site is available. To learn more, Click Here
This team will be teaching local Haitians who are interested in becoming nurses but do not have the opportunity to get the proper training. There is a great need for medical assistants in the Jeremie hospital and the village medical clinics. Participants need to be RNs who are grounded in their Christian faith, comfortable teaching basic first aid, hygiene, and disease prevention to large and small groups. Participants should be in good health and able to handle the rugged conditions of the journey. This trip will involve traveling to remote mountain villages in the back of a pickup truck and teaching through an interpreter, outdoors in extreme heat and less than sanitary conditions. Our dates are not firm but the last week of February or the first week of March are being considered. The trip will last about 10 days and the cost will be $2,000.00 per person. If you are interested in being part of this unique team and want to Make A Difference in the lives of people and in the Kingdom of God click here to register. For more information please contact Tim Hetzner at 866-455-6466 or LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org

LCC now has over 250 volunteers trained and LERT ready - qualifying them to serve as Lutheran Early Responders to a disaster. In addition to the training, Tim painted the big picture of the opportunity that disasters offer for Christians to demonstrate the Mercy and Compassion of Jesus through service to those in need. If you are interested in being trained please watch the newsletter and website www.LutheranChurchCharities.org - for upcoming LERT classes or contact Dianna Bonfield at Dianna@LutheranChurchCharities.org to schedule a training at your church

Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama
One of the Katrina Churches the NID was assigned to help when Katrina hit five years ago. Help them reach those in need in their community this Thanksgiving. Again this year the Evangelism Committee at Faith Lutheran Church, Mobile is attempting to serve the needs within our own congregation and the local community, especially at this time of the year and at this critical time in our economy. We are so thankful for your past support for this project and give all the Glory and Praise to God. We are in the process of soliciting funding for our annual Thanksgiving Baskets for the needy and are seeking your help. We are planning to construct six baskets and anticipate the cost of each basket to be about $50.00. To God be the Glory that this project will be a success again this year and will bless each recipient of these baskets with a meal for Thanksgiving that they otherwise may not have had. We do all of this in the name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We thank God for any considerations that you may give to this request and may God continue to bless you and your effort to provide assistance to all of the needed. $1,000 Needed for Medical Costs for Special Needs Woman
Request from Pastor Matthew Gunia, Zion Lutheran Church, Lyons, Illinois and Faith Lutheran Church, Westchester, Illinois I would like to request help for a community member that I am working with who has some medical issues. She is 27 years old and is a special needs person. She does not have health insurance and developed a yeast infection two months ago. The infection wasn't treated properly and ended up turning into a kidney and bladder infection. She's been scraping up money and visiting the doctor and getting prescriptions here and there, but because of the cost she hasn't been consistent enough so the infection has not cleared. She's lost quite a bit of weight. She is in need of money to pay for her doctor visits and prescriptions to get the infection knocked out or possibly a doctor who would be willing to treat her pro-bono. She has had many challenges in her life and is very skeptical. She has a lot of trouble believing that someone would actually help her without expecting something in return. She knows and trusts me, but is positive that any help she may get will have strings attached. Any help would be such a blessing and such a witness to her about the Body of Christ. Your Donations Make A Difference From Pastor Stephane Kalonji, African Immigrant Ministry, Chicago: Thank you for the support given to Josephine; I delivered the check to her on Sunday, November 7th. Josephine and the children are very thankful for this gift. I pray and hope that there will be more donations toward the goal of raising $1,650 to help this widow and her children for the next three months. Thanks again to LCC for publicizing this need and those who contributed to help.

Comfort Dog Update Top Gun Comes To Walther Lutheran High School During this past summer Doug and Gail Grebasch approached Pete Imlah about the K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs. Doug was the principal at St Paul Lutheran School in Melrose Park and Gail is the school counselor at Walther Lutheran High School. Both Doug and Gail saw the value, benefit and the impact that a comfort dog could have on their students, faculty, staff, families, and those outside their schools. Mission plans where written, boards were consulted, and much prayer went into how funds would be raised and how the schools and church would utilize this tool. This past Labor Day, Doug was called home to be with his Heavenly Father. This was a heavy blow to both St. Paul Lutheran Church and School and to Walther Lutheran High School. The K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs were called in the following day to bring comfort to the students and staff members. Gail Grebasch wanted to honor her husband and continue down the path to place a K-9 Parish Comfort Dog to be used as a bridge to bring the Mercy and Compassion of Jesus Christ to students, staff members and their families. On Wednesday, November 10th, Top Gun "Gunnar" will be placed at Walther Lutheran High School. Top Gun is a 7-month-old European Cream Retriever. He is a fully-trained service dog who can be found in the guidance office at Walther. Top Gun will also be used at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School and at Walther Academy. The purpose of placing a K-9 Comfort Dog at Walther is to assist in sharing with students the comfort found only in the cross of Jesus Christ, the acceptance Jesus has for all His children, the forgiveness Jesus has earned for all His children, the confidence Jesus has for all His children, and the love that Jesus has for all His children. Gunnar's true AKC name is Honors Top Gun Matthew 28:19 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations"
Hope, Tillie, and Prince at St. Paul Menard On Wednesday, November 3rd, the LCC K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs were at St Paul Lutheran Church and School in Chicago. During the chapel Pete Imlah shared with the students that God has called them to love and serve Him and others. After the chapel, classroom visits were made so the students could ask questions about the K-9s and pet them. Pastor Tim Engel from Holy Cross in Portage Indiana brought Prince with him and he also shared with the students how he uses Prince to reach his community with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.
Tillie Heads to Concordia University Texas November 11-13 Pete Imlah and Dianna Bonfield will be accompanying LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Tillie to the Beautiful Feet Student Mission Conference in Austin Texas. The theme of this year's conference is Love in Action. This conference has a strong focus on getting students from all of our Concordia Universities, Colleges, and Seminaries excited and involved in becoming missionaries to the people in their community, the people at their schools, and throughout the world. We are called to go and tell people about that gift that we have received though Christ Jesus and move into mission action every day. Lutheran Church Charities will have a booth at the conference to share about the many different mission opportunities of Lutheran Church Charities. Click here to schedule a K-9 Comfort Dog visit

Family In Need of $3,900 for Funeral Expenses
Request from Pastor Timothy Speckman, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Flint, Michigan I recently conducted a funeral for a lifelong Lutheran; her family is devastated both emotionally and financially. Patricia was taken home following a two-year battle with cancer and her family is unable to pay the remainder of the funeral expenses. Initially, the family was turned down by a funeral home and another facility accepted the responsibility even though they were uncertain of receiving payment. The outstanding balance is $3900. The Flint Area's unemployment rate is one of the worst in the nation and the members of her family are struggling with job loss and are unable to contribute. Any assistance that you could offer the least of these would be a tremendous blessing to this family and a well deserved thanks to the funeral home. Click here to donate

New Boiler Needed at St. Paul Lutheran School Dorchester Request from Sara Boedecker-Johnston, Principal, St Paul Lutheran School, Chicago
St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran School at 7621 South Dorchester in Chicago is facing an unexpected and significant expense. During a routine maintenance inspection this week, we were told that the boiler has cracked and must be replaced. The cost for a new boiler is $20,000, an amount that cannot be squeezed out of our already lean budget. With inclement Chicago weather just around the corner, we must act quickly to ensure that our students can continue to learn in a warm, safe building. We are seeking prayers and monetary assistance from individuals and congregations. St. Paul serves 90 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade on the south side of Chicago in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Over 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch and receive financial assistance to attend school. Your support at this crucial time will help us fulfill our mission: bringing children to know Jesus Christ while providing a quality, academic education in a safe, disciplined environment promoting social, mental, physical and spiritual growth. The project is well under way in Jacmel and Leogane, Haiti, building homes in a village that will center around a Lutheran Church, school, medical clinic and guesthouse to house American missionaries. The Ohio District is committed to guesthouses to be built in villages devastated by the January 12, 2010, earthquake. Representatives from the district will partner with LCMS World Relief and Human Care to provide a guest house where missionaries can stay as they work with Haitian laborers to build homes. The Gospel is Still the Best Way to Counter Terrorism!
Help Support our Lutheran Outreach Efforts in Lebanon Lebanon is one of the few countries in the Middle East that still has a Christian population. It is a strategic country to reach Muslims in the Middle East. The Lutheran Church has been actively involved in Gospel outreach in Lebanon since the 1950's. Because of Mission cutbacks, support is desperately needed to continue bringing the Gospel to those of the Islamic faith. Tim Hetzner, President of Lutheran Church Charities, will be traveling to Lebanon to meet with our Lutheran Missionaries there to help share the story of the work that is going and can be done! They are desperately in need of our support and prayers during this time of unrest in the Middle East. If we want to effectively fight terrorism, we need to use the only weapon that will make a difference - the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please help our fellow Christians in Lebanon continue to proclaim the Gospel and serve those in need with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ. Looking for Ways to Share the Mercy and Compassion of Christ to Those in Your Church and Community? We are in hard economic times. "Times are terrible" many say. But just think what a blessing God has given us to share the Mercy and Compassion of Christ! The door is wide open for the Church to be the Church. Jesus showed us by his life that we are to be the church that "Does Feet" (John 13). People say that they would "do" evangelism, they would reach out to people in need, but their church simply does not have the money right now to do it, things are tight! Dear Christian brothers and sisters, it doesn't take money to touch those in need and pain - it takes you and your willingness to follow Jesus' example. If you would like a staff member of LCC to come out and share ways for you and your church to reach your members and community with the Mercy and Compassion of Christ - without money - contact us at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org. We would be more than happy to come and work with you! By the way, we can even bring our K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs with us. This also will NOT cost you!
Motorcycles Needed to Help Pastors in Haiti Spread the Gospel When Tim Hetzner traveled to Haiti in March 2010 he purchased several motorcycles for the pastors to use for transportation. Because of the terrible condition of the roads, motorcycles are the most efficient means of transportation for many of the pastors who must travel many miles between the different churches that they serve and to get to their members.
More motorcycles are desperately needed. A new motorcycle costs $1,000 and is an important tool that helps the Laypastor Gabriel Jules pastors to minister to their members and spread the Gospel throughout Haiti. Pictured are two pastors that have been helped because of your support. Click here to donate Pastor Reliere Augustn

Malaria Initiative `Malaria Initiative' is a non-profit corporation formed by Susan Busse M.D., Thomas Hesselink M.D., and John Peterson, to bring spiritual and medical treatment to those suffering from Malaria, working with Lutheran Church Charities. A treatment of acidified sodium chlorite at a cost of less than $00.01 USD. per dose has proven to be very promising in preliminary laboratory and field trials. We have been working in Uganda, Sierria Leone, Ethiopia, and Ghana to improve our working relationship in these countries to further the treatment of Malaria using this particular treatment. Our goal is to spread the Message of Christ and bring a useful and inexpensive treatment for Malaria; Malaria being the number one infectious killer world wide. We are currently working at gathering more scientific data from sites that have Malaria patients, to track them along with their progress, and to document the results of the treatments so we can publish in medical journals. We are supporting a PhD. student doing thesis work at Western Michigan University on this promising treatment. Malaria Initiative is looking to get help financing the above stated goals so they may travel to train personnel and fulfill all our commitments. Thrivent Choice - Watch Your Mailbox - and Help Support Making A Difference Through Lutheran Church Charities Thrivent Choice is the new charitable grant program through which Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members are able to direct Thrivent charitable funds. Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars, based on insurance premiums, contract values, and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership which are directed by the member to Lutheran organizations. If you are an eligible member, watch your mailbox in August for program details from Thrivent to know how to designate your Choice Dollars either online or by using a toll-free phone service. A direct gift from Thrivent Choice is the replacement for Thrivent's past matching gift programs. Over the years Lutheran Church Charities has benefited from Thrivent's matching gifts and relied on them for our Disaster Response work, our Parish K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry and operational expenses to continue to offer our Dollar In-Dollar Out Giving. So, when choosing a recipient for your Choice Dollars, please remember Lutheran Church Charities as a beneficiary.

LCC Emergency Assistance Fund LCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it is increasing because of the current economic times we are living in. LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so that when these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? This is an important way for the Body of Christ to share the Mercy and Compassion and Proclamation of Christ. To contribute please click here Thank you for continuing to Make A Difference!
