their family out of poverty. The National Lutheran Church of Myanmar is trying to change this and needs your help to sponsor children in the 11th grade (the final step prior to University). Because of your generous donations two children have already received scholarships. LCC received the following email from Rev. Charles Edwards: Greetings from Myanmar. In our church there are many students but in grade 11 (entrance control by the government directly) there are 10 students. They are very clever but they are from the very poorest families. Their parents can not support them due to their poverty. Our church is trying to give scholarships but we are also facing and struggling for finical difficulties. Two months ago Lutheran Church Charities(LCC) gave scholarship to 2 students and they are now studying hard. Our church decided to send a prayer request to all our connections. Please pray for them. Our church believes that through your faithful prayers God will certainly help them in wonderful ways. Again, please pray for them. Blessings. Rev. Requested by Pastor Bob Weinhold, The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John, Sycamore, Illinois

Our congregation is working with a group of 11 refugees from Liberia, Africa in assisting them to settle in the Sycamore area. Nine of them have been here for three weeks. As part of this group there are three adults that are seeking training and employment. Soon they will need vehicles for transportation. If anyone has a vehicle to donate it would be such a blessing and witness to these families as they start their new life in Sycamore. Pastor Aubey's Mother Called Home to Glory

LCC connects needs with resources, working with more than 400 congregations to help Christians "Make a Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom" To meet our staff, click here

On Monday, September 19th Pastor Dennis Aubey's mother, Alma, was called home to glory. She had been struggling with late stage cancer. Pastor Aubey would like to thank everyone for their prayers and for the financial support that allowed him to be with his mother when she passed. Pastor Aubey writes: "The service was a wonderful witness to Mom's love for the Lord - their pastor had a wonderful sermon on John 14 - Mom was a regular at their Thursday Bible class - he always knew she would be there and he always knew the place she would sit ... wonderful segue for him to talk about her place now in heaven's Thursday class ...! I hope and pray that the Lord might allow us to 'settle down a bit' so that we can be care-givers again and not the care-receivers. If that happens then we take one more opportunity to gratefully say "Thanks" - nothing could ever change how appreciative our family is! God bless."

Comfort Dog Update

Comfort Dogs Star and Gracie Visit Rockford Lutheran High School On Friday, September 23rd, LCC Comfort Dogs Star and Gracie, along with handlers Tranetta McComb and Lynn Buhrke, visited Rockford Lutheran High School where they participated in a missions awareness event. Mr. Darren Sombke and Principal Don Gillingham invited LCC along with twentythree other missions and service organizations to come and share with students the work we do and how they can get involved in service. Over 300 students were there and many of them came to meet the dogs and find out more about the ministry of LCC. An important part of the LCC ministry is permanently placing K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs in churches, schools and universities. If you would like to consider adding a dog as a resource for ministry, please contact us at 866-455-6466. If you'd like one of our dogs to visit for chapel or some other school or church event, please click here and complete a request.

LCC Staff and Comfort Dogs Share in St. John LaGrange Anniversary Event

Four LCC staff and two K-9 Comfort Dogs were honored to participate this past Sunday in St John, La Grange's 125th Anniversary Celebration and Mission Fair. The Celebration started August 21 with 40 days of Reaching Farther and runs through Oct 2nd. The fair highlighted the different missions and ministries of the church with LCC being only one of a couple outside agencies represented among the 24 on display. The church debuted a video they've produced celebrating 125 years of ministry. The October wrap-up of the celebration includes sending a mission team to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to help with ongoing flood clean-up there. If you would like LCC to participate in a special event at your church please call us at 866-455-6466 to make arrangements. We are available to talk about missions, train disaster response volunteers, provide school chapel talks with our Comfort Dogs, and more. Click here to schedule a K-9 Comfort Dog visit

Consider Joining Tim Hetzner on a Superb Advent Germany Tour! Several Spots Open as of Today! CHRISTKINDL MARKETS trip to the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, November 27 to December 5, 2011

December is the time for the Christkindl Markets (Advent Markets) in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. Literally translated, the street fairs are Christ-child markets. They happen in nearly every city and village, large and small. They are always cause for celebration and for shopping, for some roasted sausage, music on the streets and the insides of centuries-old churches, and, of course, some hot, spiced wine. Let this be an invitation to focus on Advent and the Coming of Christ in bringing in the Christmas Season. Your Donations Make A Difference Thank you to LCC volunteer Bob Waterman for his time and service in making a trip to St John Lutheran Church in Peru to pickup linens for Haiti and a number of other ministries. The 15 passenger van was nearly filled to the ceiling. The women and men of the St John quilting group in Peru have been making donations of handmade quilts and corporate donations of linens since the fall of 2005. Carol Wetze, our contact person with the St. John Quilters said that for this year they have made and given away over 700 handmade quilts. This year's corporate donations of linens will benefit an orphanage in Haiti, several of our ethnic ministries in the Chicago area, and Jesendys Hygiene Ministry that provides hygiene kits to the homeless.

Disaster Response Martin Luther School Principal Jeremy Schamber Reports Latest from Joplin

Two people I've met recently are emblematic of the ongoing recovery in Joplin. Kevin was at the edge of the storm and his house was heavily damaged but not destroyed. He has neighbors still living with him who lost everything. Emily lost her home completely and what's left must be torn down. Her husband took the insurance check and left for California without her. She's now left to rebuild her life on her own. Although these are very tragic situations for both Kevin and Emily, it has given Pastor Mech and me the awesome opportunity to minister to His children. Special Appeal - Texas Wildfires!

I just received the word from a friend of mine, whom I have known for years. She and her husband are both LCMS Church Workers Gwen and Phil Hohle. They are currently at Concordia University - Austin Texas. Let's see what we can do to help the churches with families who have lost their homes by fire! Thank you for your compassion and mercy in bringing the Presence of Jesus Christ to them in their time of need. LCC will work with the Texas District and individual congregations that have families that have suffered loss.

Help Fund Eagle Scout Project to Benefit St. Matthew Chicago

Request from Pastor Doug Swanson, St. John Lutheran Church, Darien, Illinois

A member of our congregation, Dan Greg (pictured), is a Life Rank Boy Scout with Troop 101 out of Darien. Dan's father, Mark, has been involved with repair work at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago for the past several years. Dan would like to do his Eagle Scout project at St. Matthew. He wants to "enhance the appearance of the community center to help enrich the community and those who wish to walk through those doors." Pastor Julio Loza has approved the work subject to Dan obtaining funding for the project. The cost for the materials will be about 1,250.00. This is a great Eagle Scout project that will benefit a sister congregation in Chicago that serves the poor and homeless in their community. Any assistance will be a blessing for St. Matthew. Pastor in Need of Van for Outreach Ministry in Chicago

Request from Pastor Samuel Shin, Tabor Lutheran Church, Chicago

I am a Lutheran pastor in Chicago serving at Tabor Lutheran Church, focusing on the ethnic outreach ministry. I need a van to be able to pick up and drop off people as part of our outreach to the community. I do not have a personal car that I can use. If you have a van that you can donate to this ministry it would be a real blessing to this community. Thank you and God's blessing to you! Cargo Van or Pick-up Truck Needed for Food Pantry at Zion Lutheran Church, Chicago Request from Pastor Stephane Kalonji, Zion Lutheran Church, Chicago

Since its opening in June, Zion Lutheran Church's Food Pantry has been serving individuals and families with food bags every Thursday, from 4:00p.m to 6:00p.m. and any day and time in case of emergency. Each week the number of those coming to receive food has been growing. Zion's members have contributed their vehicles for the food pick up from the Greater Chicago Food Depository, but we are no longer able to pick up all the food boxes due to the limited transportation available. We therefore need help with a Cargo Van or Pick-up truck for the food pantry. And since more and more food items are being sold (at a discounted price) by the Greater Chicago Food Depository, we're asking for financial assistance so we can purchase the food items that our clients greatly need. Thank you for your help! If you have a vehicle to donate please contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org Click here to donate to support Zion's food pantry

Reed Organ Available Ten stop antique reed organ available to a congregation. The instrument, of solid oak construction, and lovingly waxed and polished, has been in the same family since it was built in the late 1800's. operated by mechanical bellows using pedals, has been played until recently. A bench is included. 2892 Gulbrandsen organ (Dark Brown Wood) with bench. Excitement for a Latrine in Haiti - Puts things here in the US in perspective LCMS World Relief and Human Care, along with Lutheran Church Charities, are trying to put a latrine and water filter system in each of our 82 Lutheran Schools in Haiti. Our first latrine has been completed and dedicated! It is touching to see such excitement in having a latrine! To dedicate it! It puts our situation in the US with our economic worries in perspective. Imagine not having any washroom facilities, which is the case for each of our Lutheran Schools in Haiti! To see their excitement to have a latrine! We will continue to build these for each of the schools as money comes in! Consider Making a Difference to a Lutheran School by providing a latrine! Only $500 to build. A water filter is only $185. Thank you to those who have donated so far to make this exciting event happen.

LCC received the following email from Laurent Lophane in Haiti along with pictures of the new latrine: "Peace and Grace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I went this morning at Colminy where I inaugurated the latrine. The committee of the church and the school were happy for this big gift, you know this latrine is the first one in this area. I want to thank each of you in their name, those people were really in need, may God bless you and your ministry and your activities also." Sewing Machines Needed to Train Pastor Isaac's Orphans in Haiti so they can Work and Support Themselves! Request From Sue Gross, Haiti Lutheran Mission Project

On our last visit to Haiti we became aware that some of the Orphans we still remember as small children are growing quickly. Some of them will soon be out on their own trying to make a living and supporting their own families. We are concerned that even though they have an education, jobs are in very short supply and it will be difficult for them to survive. Next summer we hope to restart sewing classes so that those ready to leave the orphanage will be able to support themselves by making items that we will bring back to the States to sell. For this project to start we are asking for donations of portable sewing machines. We can send these machines on the bus when we ship it and it will not cost any extra freight. Please consider dusting off that machine you no longer use and donating it to those who will put it to good use. If you have a machine to donate please contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org Click here to donate for the purchase of a sewing machine

Help the Haitian Orphans NOW-Donations Needed for Bunk Beds Request from Sue Gross, Lutheran Mission Project

Friends of Haiti, I am often asked how a small congregation can be part of the Haiti Ministry without making a monthly commitment of support. Well here it is..................... Immanuel Lutheran Church in Richton Park, along with the Richton Park Community, bought a used school bus which we will use as a shipping container to send large items to Pastor Isaac in Haiti. This is a rare opportunity for us to have such a large space to ship needed items to Haiti so we decided to take advantage of it by shipping the much needed BUNKBEDS that the children will use when the addition on Pastor's house is finished next year.

We found white pine bunk beds at IKEA for $159.00 each. The mattresses are extra and they have 20 available right now if we want them. We do not have to pay tax and we will pick them up ourselves. So if we can get 20 congregations to donate $300.00 we will have enough beds for the 30 orphans and the guest room where mission teams will stay in the future. We would like to thank Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Richton Park Community for the FEST they sponsored last Saturday. All proceeds went to pay for the cost of shipping the bus to Haiti. Please consider a donation for this cause. These children sleep on a concrete floor in Pastor's home right now. These children have never had a bed to sleep in! Can you imagine the excitement when they get to sleep in their very own bed for the first time? Please help make this happen NOW. If the bus leaves before we can raise the money for the beds it will be too costly for us to ship them. Click here to donate

LCC to Furnish Guest House in Haiti Last October work began on the Guest House in Jacmel, Haiti. Part of the Building Homes and Hope in Haiti project, which partners LCMS World Relief and Human Care and Lutheran Church Charities, the Guest House will be used to house mission groups working in the area. The walls are up and the interior work has begun. Many items are still needed before the Guest House opens this fall so we are having a "Guest House Shower". If you or your group would like to be a part of the "shower" and help furnish the Guest House you can make a donation for any item(s) on the list. LCC will arrange for all donations, Dollar per Dollar, to be sent to Haiti to purchase the items. This is a great opportunity for individuals, congregations, mission teams or organizations to be part of a project that will have a lasting impact in Haiti. Thank you to Jackie Rychel and the Ohio District for all their work overseeing the construction and furnishing of the guest house. If you have any questions regarding items on the list, please email Jackie Rychel at jrychel@gmail.com. Click here to read the list of items Click here to donate to furnish the guest house in Haiti

LCC Ministry Resources Tim's Pick of the Week

Should Christians Embrace Evolution by: Norman C. Nevin, ed. There is perhaps no more complex question facing the church today than whether or not to embrace evolutionary science and depart from a strict literalist view of Genesis 1-3. But does Genesis 13 even intend to speak to historical events? That is just one of the many sub-questions this topic forces on us as we attempt to be faithful to the biblical text--whatever form that faithfulness may come in. As in many polarized debates, the answers are never as clear as teh proponents of each side represent them to be. Book are published representing either view but rarely, if ever, adequatley engage the views and points of another. Thankfully, this new volume Should Christians Embrace Evolution: Biblical and Scientific Responses engages the issues thoughtfully and with compelling argument in a true spirit on Christian respect for others. 13 scholars lay out the issues discuss the questions they raise and provide thoughtful analysis.

LCC Emergency Assistance Fund LCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it is increasing because of the current economic times we are living in. LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so that when these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? This is an important way for the Body of Christ to share the Mercy and Compassion and Proclamation of Christ. To contribute please click here Thank you for continuing to Make A Difference!
