Disaster Response Trainings Scheduled For Fall 2011 LCC connects needs with resources, working with more than 400 congregations to help Christians "Make a Difference in People's Lives and in God's Kingdom" To meet our staff, click here
Zion Lutheran Church in Hinsdale will host LERT Training on Wednesday, October 5th. Registration and a light supper will begin at 5:30 pm with class from 6 pm to 9 pm. Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia will host LERT Training on Tuesday, October 25th. Registration and a light supper will begin at 5:30 pm with class from 6 pm to 9 pm. The Central DuPage Chapter of Thrivent will host LERT Training on Thursday, October 27th at St. John Wheaton. Registration and a light supper will begin at 5:30 pm with class from 6 pm to 9 pm. Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carol Stream will host LERT training on Saturday, November 12th. Registration and a light breakfast will begin at 8:30 am with class from 9 am - 12 noon. Click here to register for LERT Training Registration is $20 and helps cover the cost of the training materials, meal, and the LERT vest, which is required to be worn in a disaster response situation. Registration can be paid by credit card online at time of registration or by cash or check at the door. LCC hosted the fireside chat on Monday evening, September 26. Presenters at the conference included LCMS Fifth Vice President Reverend Dr. Scott Murray and Concordia Theological Seminary Professor Dr. Carl Fickenscher II speaking on Law and Gospel.

Your Donations Make A Difference On Friday morning, a van full of linens collected by St John Lutheran Church in Peru were delivered to the Boerman's garage in Downers Grove where the Monday Morning Women's Bible Class will sort and repack the linens to be distributed to various ministries where they will be given away to people in need. Twin size bed linens will go on the Bus for Haiti at Richton Park and will be used to cover beds for the orphans at the orphanage in Jeremie. Soaps & shampoos will go to the Jesendys Hygiene Ministry; Compassionately Providing Essentials at Immanuel Downers Grove, which supplies hygiene kits for the homeless. The other linens and household items will be given to the ethnic churches to give out to those in need.

Filling Up the Bus to Haiti!
Sue Gross (pictured) picked up a check of your donations to purchase bunk beds for Pastor Isaac's orphanage in Haiti. Sue and her husband Ken are in Haiti this week meeting with Pastor Isaac and others to discuss ways to create jobs and help Haitians become self-supporting. Thank you to Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights who purchased, and Joan Henning, who delivered to LCC, two portable sewing machines for the Haiti mission project. The sewing machines will be delivered to the bus that is being packed and later this month will be heading to Haiti. Thank you to the 50's Plus group of Immanuel Palatine who made eight more bag mats and to Ed Strunk of Immanuel who delivered the bag mats to LCC. The bag mats will also be added to the bus going to Haiti.

Comfort Dog Update
Olympia and Gracie Visit Mt. Olive Rockford's Fall Festival On Saturday, October 1, K-9 Parish Comfort Dogs Olympia and Gracie, along with LCC staff Rich Martin and Tim Kurth, spent the afternoon on the campus of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Rockford for their third annual fall festival. This community outreach event included a German dancing group and a magician on stage and wrapped up with an outdoor worship service. New Song Community Church (LCMS Congregation Rev Dan Hawkins), a new Mission start that was meeting in various locations over the last several years, moved into their new location in June. This past Saturday they had their annual Community Event open to everyone - food, games, chili cook off contest, and of course the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs. What a wonderful event and successful in reaching their community. This is a growing, serving, congregation located at 1234 Douglas Rd Oswego, Illinois. K-9 Comfort Dogs Gather at Walcamp Fall Festival K-9 Comfort Dogs Olympia, Gracie, Chewie, Star, Butter, Shami, and JoJo all went to camp on Sunday, October 2. Walcamp, that is! They attended the annual Fall Festival where they walked the grounds and spent time with the hundreds of people who were there enjoying a picture perfect day. Worship, music, food, a recreated Civil War encampment, and President and Mrs. Lincoln were part of the festivities.
Comfort Dog Adeena at St. John Burlington Makes the News! On September 28, Comfort Dog Adeena was the subject of a news article in the Courier- News : "St. John Lutheran Church, at 13N535 French Road, has a four-footed, furry parishioner that is always willing to listen to others. "Adeena, a golden retriever, was born in January 2010. She came to our church in December of that same year," Pastor Howard Gleason said. "She is a certified and trained service dog. Tim Hetzner Teaches Live Class - The New Testament - Started September 12 - It's Not Too Late to Register Join Tim Hetzner as he teaches live on Mondays - Word Among Us - The New Testament study of the Bible. Starting with an overview of the history and culture of First Century Palestine he will then journey through the entire New Testament. Classes will look at the Bible in the context of history, culture and customs of the people at the time, as well as the archeological evidence.
Classes are non-denominational and are open to anyone regardless of church (or lack of) affiliation. This is a safe environment to study the Bible - no church membership solicitation will be allowed! The course is also available to be taken by Internet. This 30 session class started Monday, September 12th at Harris Bank in Palatine at 6AM, St Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods at 9:30AM and 7:30PM but you can still join. Cars Needed for Liberian Refugee Families

Our congregation is working with a group of 11 refugees from Liberia, Africa in assisting them to settle in the Sycamore area. Nine of them have been here for three weeks. As part of this group there are three adults that are seeking training and employment. Soon they will need vehicles for transportation. If anyone has a vehicle to donate it would be such a blessing and witness to these families as they start their new life in Sycamore. Disaster Response Martin Luther School Principal Jeremy Schamber Reports Latest from Joplin
Two people I've met recently are emblematic of the ongoing recovery in Joplin. Kevin was at the edge of the storm and his house was heavily damaged but not destroyed. He has neighbors still living with him who lost everything. Emily lost her home completely and what's left must be torn down. Her husband took the insurance check and left for California without her. She's now left to rebuild her life on her own. Although these are very tragic situations for both Kevin and Emily, it has given Pastor Mech and me the awesome opportunity to minister to His children. Special Appeal - Texas Wildfires!
I just received the word from a friend of mine, whom I have known for years. She and her husband are both LCMS Church Workers Gwen and Phil Hohle. They are currently at Concordia University - Austin Texas. Let's see what we can do to help the churches with families who have lost their homes by fire! Thank you for your compassion and mercy in bringing the Presence of Jesus Christ to them in their time of need. LCC will work with the Texas District and individual congregations that have families that have suffered loss.

Help Fund Eagle Scout Project to Benefit St. Matthew Chicago

A member of our congregation, Dan Greg (pictured), is a Life Rank Boy Scout with Troop 101 out of Darien. Dan's father, Mark, has been involved with repair work at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago for the past several years. Dan would like to do his Eagle Scout project at St. Matthew. He wants to "enhance the appearance of the community center to help enrich the community and those who wish to walk through those doors." Pastor Julio Loza has approved the work subject to Dan obtaining funding for the project. The cost for the materials will be about 1,250.00. This is a great Eagle Scout project that will benefit a sister congregation in Chicago that serves the poor and homeless in their community. Any assistance will be a blessing for St. Matthew. Cargo Van or Pick-up Truck Needed for Food Pantry at Zion Lutheran Church, Chicago Request from Pastor Stephane Kalonji, Zion Lutheran Church, Chicago
Since its opening in June, Zion Lutheran Church's Food Pantry has been serving individuals and families with food bags every Thursday, from 4:00p.m to 6:00p.m. and any day and time in case of emergency. Each week the number of those coming to receive food has been growing. Zion's members have contributed their vehicles for the food pick up from the Greater Chicago Food Depository, but we are no longer able to pick up all the food boxes due to the limited transportation available. We therefore need help with a Cargo Van or Pick-up truck for the food pantry. And since more and more food items are being sold (at a discounted price) by the Greater Chicago Food Depository, we're asking for financial assistance so we can purchase the food items that our clients greatly need. Reed Organ Available Ten stop antique reed organ available to a congregation. The instrument, of solid oak construction, and lovingly waxed and polished, has been in the same family since it was built in the late 1800's. Although modest in volume by today's standards, it might well serve a smaller congregation in providing support for its liturgy and hymnody. Currently in storage for the last several weeks, this organ, operated by mechanical bellows using pedals, has been played until recently. International Ministry Scholarship a Child in Myanmar
Because of your Donations Two of 10 Students have Received Scholarships
Strict regulations in Myanmar (formerly Burma) make it difficult for children to advance to a University education. Without specialized schooling outside of the inadequate public school system most poor children never get the chance for higher education which can lift their family out of poverty. The National Lutheran Church of Myanmar is trying to change this and needs your help to sponsor children in the 11th grade (the final step prior to University). Because of your generous donations two children have already received scholarships. LCC received the following email from Rev. Charles Edwards: Greetings from Myanmar. In our church there are many students but in grade 11 (entrance control by the government directly) there are 10 students. They are very clever but they are from the very poorest families. Their parents can not support them due to their poverty. Our church is trying to give scholarships but we are also facing and struggling for finical difficulties. Two months ago Lutheran Church Charities(LCC) gave scholarship to 2 students and they are now studying hard. Our church decided to send a prayer request to all our connections. Please pray for them. Excitement for a Latrine in Haiti - Puts things here in the US in perspective LCMS World Relief and Human Care, along with Lutheran Church Charities, are trying to put a latrine and water filter system in each of our 82 Lutheran Schools in Haiti. Our first latrine has been completed and dedicated! It is touching to see such excitement in having a latrine! To dedicate it! It puts our situation in the US with our economic worries in perspective. Imagine not having any washroom facilities, which is the case for each of our Lutheran Schools in Haiti! To see their excitement to have a latrine! We will continue to build these for each of the schools as money comes in! Consider Making a Difference to a Lutheran School by providing a latrine! Only $500 to build. A water filter is only $185. Thank you to those who have donated so far to make this exciting event happen LCC received the following email from Laurent Lophane in Haiti along with pictures of the new latrine: "Peace and Grace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I went this morning at Colminy where I inaugurated the latrine. The committee of the church and the school were happy for this big gift, you know this latrine is the first one in this area. Sewing Machines Needed to Train Pastor Isaac's Orphans in Haiti so they can Work and Support Themselves! Request From Sue Gross, Haiti Lutheran Mission Project
On our last visit to Haiti we became aware that some of the Orphans we still remember as small children are growing quickly. Some of them will soon be out on their own trying to make a living and supporting their own families. We are concerned that even though they have an education, jobs are in very short supply and it will be difficult for them to survive. Next summer we hope to restart sewing classes so that those ready to leave the orphanage will be able to support themselves by making items that we will bring back to the States to sell. For this project to start we are asking for donations of portable sewing machines. We can send these machines on the bus when we ship it and it will not cost any extra freight. Please consider dusting off that machine you no longer use and donating it to those who will put it to good use. LCC to Furnish Guest House in Haiti Last October work began on the Guest House in Jacmel, Haiti. Part of the Building Homes and Hope in Haiti project, which partners LCMS World Relief and Human Care and Lutheran Church Charities, the Guest House will be used to house mission groups working in the area. The walls are up and the interior work has begun. Many items are still needed before the Guest House opens this fall so we are having a "Guest House Shower". If you or your group would like to be a part of the "shower" and help furnish the Guest House you can make a donation for any item(s) on the list. LCC will arrange for all donations, Dollar per Dollar, to be sent to Haiti to purchase the items. This is a great opportunity for individuals, congregations, mission teams or organizations to be part of a project that will have a lasting impact in Haiti. Hot Dog Cart and Grill Available for Ministry Events Thanks to Thrivent and Generous Donors
Thanks to the generous contributions of LCC donors and a grant from The Northwest Cook County Thrivent Branch, LCC has acquired a commercial grade food service cart and a large gas grill. Both of these are mounted on trailers and can be picked up to be used by your church for picnics, festivals, and other events where food is served. LCC plans to use this food prep equipment as part of our disaster response in order to feed volunteers and victims of disaster. When there is no disaster related activity the cart and grill are available for churches and schools in the Northern Illinois District. If you would like to use one or both of these for an upcoming event, please contact LCC or click below to complete a request form. Thrivent Choice - Help Support Making A Difference Through Lutheran Church Charities Thrivent Choice is the new charitable grant program through which Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members are able to direct Thrivent charitable funds. Eligible members are designated Choice Dollars, based on insurance premiums, contract values, and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership which are directed by the member to Lutheran organizations.
LCC Emergency Assistance Fund LCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it is increasing because of the current economic times we are living in. LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so that when these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? St. John's Algonquin Ministry Fair
Saturday and Sunday, October 15 & 16, 2011 St. John's Lutheran Church 300 Jefferson Street Algonquin, Illinois St. John's Lutheran Church & School in Algonquin is holding their first Ministry Fair on Saturday, October 15th and Sunday, October 16th. The Ministry Fair is open to the community and offers an opportunity for visitors to learn about the different programs and services St. John's offers.
St. John's will also offer a taste of "Angel Food Ministries" and "Marketday" during the fair. The Ministry Fair will follow the Saturday 5:30 pm service and the Sunday 8:00 am and 10:30 am services. Music to Move Our Next Generation Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palatine Begins Monthly Concert Series on October 2nd

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palatine began a series of monthly benefit concerts on Sunday, October 2nd, at 4 p.m. The inaugural Music to Move Our Next Generation concert includes more than 15 vocal and instrumental performances from members and friends of Immanuel Lutheran Church. A reception will follow the concert, providing guest with an opportunity to meet the performers. The Music to Mover Our Next Generation concerts are free and open to the public. All proceeds from a free-will offering will be used for the restoration and renewal of the church's impressive 2,000-pipe Wicks organ. A second concert, featuring The Bruce Blanck trio and professional vibraphonist Bob Wessberg, a member of Immanuel, is planned for Sunday, November 6th at 4 p.m. The concert will open with student musicians from Immanuel Lutheran School. Immanuel Lutheran Church & School is located at 200 North Plum Grove Road (at Wood Street) in downtown Palatine, just two blocks east of the Palatine Metra Train Station.
