takes Life of Pastor's Wife
Rev. Jeff Geske and his family were in a tragic car accident Saturday afternoon just west of Topeka, Kansas. Rev. Geske's wife, Laura, and two of their three children, Joshua (age 8) and Joy (age 3), were killed. Their son Jacob was not in the car. Kansas District President Keith Kohlmeier shares these words: "The answer to the question of WHY is not found in words that we can say, but at the foot of the cross of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Laura and Joshua and Joy know the answer to WHY. God help us all learn what that means. We believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the Life everlasting." Rev. Geske is the pastor of Christ the King in Salina, Kansas LCC is collecting funds to assist Rev. Geske and Jacob. All contributions are tax deductible. Luther Memorial Mission Team Returns from Haiti A team of 11 from Luther Memorial University Student Center, Shorewood, Wisconsin traveled to Jacmel, Haiti this month. The team leader, Rachel Ploetz, has been working with LCC and the students from Concordia, Wisconsin for eight months to make this trip happen. This team was able to experience some firsts for Jacmel. They were the first team to stay at the Church Guest House in Jacmel, and to also attend the dedication of the house. They were able to witness the baptism of 30 new members of the church at Beaudrouin, which took place in the ocean. The team raised money, with a match from LCC, to distribute shoes in the tent village. It was a spirit-filled week showing the Mercy and Compassion of Christ to the people of Haiti. Thank You! from the Family of Rev. Matthew Peterson
LCC received a beautiful email from the family of Rev. Matthew Peterson: Dear Congregation of St. Peter, family and friends, I am at a loss for words to express my appreciation at the outpouring of support and love after Matthew's death. It was so apparent how many lives Matthew touched during his short time here on this Earth. The outpouring of financial gifts was overwhelming, through cards, through the Outback Steakhouse Fundraiser and through the Lutheran Church Charities Family Fund. Click here to read the entire email

Teacher, 100, has no plans to quit Ashburn Lutheran School
Olivia Neubauer, 99, teaches at Ashburn Lutheran School on West 83rd Street. Olivia, who will turn 100 on March 11, is a reading teacher. She helped found Ashburn Lutheran in 1964 and has been a force there ever since. She is also the aunt of Ken Gross, member of Christ Lutheran Church in Orland Park. Ken and his wife Sue have been actively involved in mission work in Haiti for years. In an email from Ken he writes: "What a blessing Aunt Olivia is to our children and grandchildren. She is an example to so many of Christian Giving. She is the reason our Christmas Eve always has a Christ centered play, complete with costumes! My daughter has taken over writing a NEW play every year (Olivia has retired from hand writing plays). This year she had 18 reading roles with costumes. The balance of the guests sang along. This is just one of the Olivia's legacies that we feel blessed to have been in her family. Think of the countless students who have been touched by her." Comfort Dog Update LCC Comfort Dogs Attend Memorial Service at St. John, Island Lake A memorial service was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Island Lake for 10 year old Griffin Shirey who died in an automobile accident on December 12th. Griffin was a student at Cotton Creek School in Island Lake. After being told that the school was unavailable for the memorial service, a friend of the family recommended St. John. Pastor Rod Krueger welcomed the family and friends and led the memorial service for hundreds of family, friends, students, and teachers. The church was filled and overflowed into the gym and hallway. What an amazing outreach and witness. K-9 Comfort Dogs Tara, Star, Butter, Ladel, Shami, and Olympia were present with their handlers along with LCC staff members Marie Payes and Rich Martin. At one point Nicholas Shirey, Griffin's twin brother, said "these dogs really do give you comfort". Nicholas was also seriously injured in the crash. Nicholas asked if K-9 Olympia could sit with him during the service. He never took his hand off of her. Click here to schedule a K-9 Comfort Dog visit Donate to the K-9 Parish Comfort Dog Ministry

Families in Need Help Make A Difference District President Dan Gilbert Appeals for Support for Pastor and His Family
LCC has received an appeal from District President Dan Gilbert. A pastor and his family are in need of financial assistance as they make the transition into ministry in the LCMS. They have been Spirit led to pursue the course even though it has meant sacrificing regular income during this time. They ask for your prayerful support and, if the Spirit so leads you, temporary help with living expenses. LCC has already provided some assistance for immediate bills and will continue to support the family in this transition as the Lord provides through your contributions. Ministry Needs Help Make A Difference Voice of Care Requests Help With Special Needs Camp Scholarship
Voice of Care is a ministry to developmentally challenged people and those who care for them within our Northern Illinois District. Caring for those with special needs is a 24/7 responsibility that comes with financial challenges, many doctor and therapy appointments and more. Families rarely get breaks as few people are equipped to care for their special needs children and so provide time off. Voice of Care addresses many of these concerns by providing scholarships for the Special Needs Camp program held at Walcamp in Kingston, Illinois each summer. In order to make this camp accessible to everyone, Voice of Care scholarships cover some or all of the cost for families in need. LCC is cooperating with Voice of Care to help provide this year's scholarship fund. Your gift will make it possible for families to send their developmentally challenged child or adult child to camp. This is a memorable event for the child and provides a much needed respite for the family. English New Testaments Needed for Salam Outreach to Students Request from Pastor Hicham Chehab, Salam Arabic Fellowship, Missionary, POBLO- Chicago
Salam Arabic Fellowship needs paperback English copies of the New Testament for the student ministry at College of DuPage and Morraine Valley Community College. NIV, or other modern translations are preferable. Our student ministry has given out more than 300 copies of the Bible to college students over the past four years, not to mention tracts and Christian books. God's Word sows seeds of faith in the hearts of people and would never return empty! At this time we are looking to give away copies of the New Testament only. We have found that to be the most effective outreach to the students. If you have copies of the New Testament to donate contact LCC at 866-455-6466 or email LCC@LutheranChurchCharities.org Click here to donate for the purchase of New Testaments

LCC Emergency Assistance Fund LCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it is increasing because of the current economic times we are living in. LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making the need known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to help the family or individual. However, we receive some requests that are emergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can't always get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first. Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so that when these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? This is an important way for the Body of Christ to share the Mercy and Compassion and Proclamation of Christ. To contribute please click here Thank you for continuing to Make A Difference!
